The Galaxy SmartTag2 uses a replaceable CR2032 coin-cell battery. To change it, eject the rear tray with the supplied pin or a small clip, remove the old cell, install the new battery with its positive terminal aligned to the tag’s + mark, and slide the tray fully home. If the tag still will not respond or connect, work through battery seating, a restart, SmartThings setup, proximity, and—when necessary—the SmartTag2 force-restart procedure.
Samsung Japan estimates about 500 days of typical use or about 700 days in power-saving mode. Those are Samsung’s 2024 estimates, not a guaranteed interval: usage, radio activity, and environmental conditions can change actual life.

What battery the SmartTag2 takes
Use a CR2032 lithium coin-cell battery. The SmartTag2 is not recharged through a cable; its coin cell is removed from the tag’s tray and replaced. Match the replacement by the CR2032 designation rather than by a brand, price, capacity claim, or package appearance. Samsung’s instructions establish the battery type but do not rank manufacturers or listings.
Samsung Japan’s 2024 guide gives two approximate figures:
#1 Best Overall
- COMPATIBLE WITH AIRTAG & KEY FOBS: Works with Apple AirTag, all major car key fobs (Toyota, Honda, BMW, Ford, Chevrolet, Lexus), fitness trackers, glucose monitors, tire pressure sensors, and any CR2032 / 3V lithium coin battery device.
- CHILD SAFETY: BITTER TASTE ON BOTH SIDES TO HELP KEEP CHILDREN SAFE—Duracell CR2032 features a bitter taste coating applied to BOTH SIDES of the battery to help deter accidental ingestion by young children.
- SUPERIOR LONGEVITY: Duracell Lasts Longer Than Energizer 3-In-1* | *Duracell 2032 size only. Based on ANSI Digital Household test vs. Energizer 2032 3-in-1.
- QUALITY ASSURANCE: Every Duracell lithium coin battery is manufactured to precise specifications and guaranteed against defects in material and workmanship. Trusted in medical devices and safety applications.
- FAMILY-SAFE PACKAGING: Duracell CR2032 batteries are sold in child-safe packaging—an additional layer of safety for households with young children.
- About 500 days in typical use.
- About 700 days when power-saving mode is used.
These estimates describe expected use under Samsung’s stated conditions. They should not be treated as a calendar promise for every tag, phone, location, or usage pattern. A tag used frequently, detected often, or operating in difficult radio conditions may not match either figure. Conversely, a lightly used tag can last longer. The useful check is the tag’s actual response and battery status in SmartThings, not a fixed replacement date.
If you are shopping for a replacement, search for a CR2032 battery or replacement CR2032 coin-cell battery. The supported selection criterion is the CR2032 designation. Samsung’s cited material does not establish a best brand, a preferred retailer, a particular price, or a performance advantage for one listing.
Before opening the tag
Have the replacement CR2032 ready and use the supplied battery-tray ejection pin if you still have it. Samsung also documents a small clip as an alternative, so a separate specialty tool is not required by the instructions. Work over a clean, well-lit surface so the tray and coin cell do not fall away. The tray is a fitted part; use gentle, straight pressure instead of twisting or forcing it.

- Confirm that the cell is marked CR2032.
- Locate the small tray-ejection hole on the back of the SmartTag2.
- Note the + marking inside the tag before removing the old battery.
- Keep the tray oriented as it came out; Samsung warns that incorrect tray or battery orientation can prevent operation.
- Keep the phone nearby if you plan to test SmartThings immediately after the replacement.
Do not start app troubleshooting while the tag is physically open. First complete the battery installation and establish that the tag is assembled correctly. This separates a contact or polarity problem from a phone-side connection problem.
How to replace the Galaxy SmartTag2 battery
- Find the tray hole. Turn the SmartTag2 over and locate the battery-tray opening on the back.
- Release the tray. Insert the supplied ejection pin, or a small clip, into the hole. Apply controlled pressure until the tray releases.
- Pull the tray out gently. Remove it far enough to access the spent cell without bending or scraping the tray.
- Take out the old CR2032. Lift the depleted coin cell from its holder and dispose of it through a battery-recycling or household hazardous-waste route available in your area.
- Install the replacement cell. Place the new CR2032 in the holder with its positive terminal aligned with the + marking in the tag. Do not assume that the visible side is correct without checking the mark.
- Return the tray. Slide the tray completely back into its slot, keeping it in the same orientation in which it was removed. It should sit securely rather than stopping partway.
- Check the tag. If it responds, continue with SmartThings or your normal tracking use. If it is silent or unresponsive, follow the checks below rather than repeatedly forcing the tray.
Samsung Gulf support states that the SmartTag2 will emit a sound immediately after insertion. That is useful as an audible indication during the documented insertion procedure, but the statement should not be treated as a requirement that every ordinary battery change must produce a sound under every condition. If you hear nothing, check the cell, polarity, and tray seating before assuming the tag has failed.
What a correct installation looks like
The replacement cell should be the specified CR2032, the positive terminal should match the tag’s + mark, and the tray should lie flush and fully inserted. A tray that is visibly raised, angled, or stopped short is not ready for reliable testing. Remove it and realign it rather than pressing harder. Once the tray is home, test the tag near the phone so distance does not obscure the result.
If the SmartTag2 will not power on after the change
Start with the physical installation. A new cell cannot help if it is the wrong type, upside down, making poor contact, or held in a tray that is not fully seated.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck the cell and tray
- Remove the tray again and verify that the battery is a CR2032.
- Confirm that the positive terminal is aligned with the tag’s + mark.
- Inspect the tray orientation and slide it fully into the slot.
- Remove and reinsert the battery once to restart the tag, then test its response again.
Do not substitute a different coin-cell designation merely because it looks similar. The documented fit for the SmartTag2 is CR2032. Also avoid repeatedly forcing the ejector pin or tray; if the assembly does not move normally, pause and check that the pin is in the tray hole and that the tray is aligned.
Use the SmartTag2 force-restart sequence
If the tag remains frozen or does not respond after the orientation and seating checks, use Samsung’s SmartTag2-specific force-restart procedure:

- Remove the battery tray.
- Press and release the SmartTag2 button once.
- Reinsert the tray while pressing the button again.
- Keep holding the button for more than seven seconds, until the tag produces the reset sound.
This is a device-specific sequence, not the same as simply pressing the tag button during normal use. Keep the tray and battery aligned while performing it. The button press and the tray reinsertion must occur in the order described; pressing the button without removing the tray is not the documented force restart. If the tag still does not respond, repeat the physical checks before attempting setup again.
If your phone does not find the tag during setup
SmartThings is Samsung’s documented route for adding a SmartTag2. Keep the tag close to the phone while onboarding. A device-found pop-up may appear automatically, but Samsung’s guidance also provides a manual path when it does not.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open SmartThings on the phone and make sure the app is current for your device.
- Place the powered SmartTag2 near the phone.
- If SmartThings displays a device-found prompt, follow the on-screen instructions.
- If no prompt appears, use the app’s Add device controls, choose the tag or tracker category, and continue through the displayed setup steps.
- Verify that the tag responds before retrying. If it is silent or frozen, perform the battery, restart, or force-restart checks first.
Samsung Japan notes that first pairing may not proceed smoothly in some surrounding environments and recommends trying pairing again. Treat that as a retry suggestion, not a guarantee that a second attempt will resolve every phone, account, permission, Bluetooth, or software condition.
What to do when a retry still fails
- Move the tag and phone closer together during the entire add-device process.
- Confirm that the battery is installed in the correct direction and that the tray is fully seated.
- Restart the tag by removing and reinserting the battery.
- Use the SmartTag2 force-restart sequence if the tag remains unresponsive.
- Return to SmartThings’ add-device controls after the tag has produced a response.
Try the manual Add device route even if the automatic pop-up was absent. The absence of a pop-up means only that automatic discovery did not present itself; it does not by itself prove that the tag or phone is defective. Conversely, a visible tag in the app does not prove that later location reporting will be precise.
The cited Samsung material does not establish one universal fix for every phone model, software version, account state, or permission configuration. If the documented checks do not restore onboarding, Samsung support for your device and region is the appropriate next escalation.
When the tag is paired but its location is missing or inaccurate
Registration and location estimation are separate problems. A SmartTag2 can remain listed in SmartThings while its displayed position is delayed, imprecise, or unavailable because the conditions used for detection and location estimation are poor.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Samsung’s SmartTag2 troubleshooting guidance identifies these checks as relevant:
- Proximity: bring the tag closer when testing whether the phone can detect it.
- Bluetooth detection: check whether the phone can communicate with the tag at all.
- GPS conditions: location estimates can be affected when satellite positioning is limited.
- Wi-Fi conditions: available network signals also influence location estimation.
- Resetting: if the tag is not behaving normally, use the documented restart or reset procedure and test again.
Use a nearby test to separate the symptoms. If the phone detects the tag when it is close, the battery and basic Bluetooth path are more plausible than a total power failure. If it remains undetectable nearby, return to the CR2032, polarity, tray, restart, and force-restart steps. If it is detectable but the map is delayed or imprecise, examine GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and surrounding conditions rather than changing the battery again.
Do not interpret an imprecise map position as proof that the battery change failed. First establish whether the tag is powered and detectable nearby; then assess the environmental conditions affecting the location report.

Checking battery status in SmartThings
Samsung’s general SmartTag support documentation describes viewing battery status in SmartThings. That page addresses the original SmartTag and SmartTag+, so treat it as supporting context rather than a SmartTag2-only menu guarantee. SmartThings labels and available controls can vary by app version and region. If a battery indicator is available for your tag, use it as an additional clue; do not let a missing menu label replace the physical CR2032 and response checks.
Choose the fix by the symptom
| What you see | First focus | Documented next action |
|---|---|---|
| No sound, no response, or no power after installing a cell | CR2032 type, battery orientation, and tray seating | Remove and reinstall the cell; restart the tag; use the force-restart sequence if it remains frozen. |
| SmartThings does not show the tag during onboarding | Powered tag, close range, and SmartThings add-device flow | Keep the tag nearby, use Add device manually if no pop-up appears, and retry pairing. |
| The tag is registered but detection is intermittent | Bluetooth communication and proximity | Test nearby, then restart or reset if the tag remains unresponsive. |
| The tag is paired but the map position is delayed or inaccurate | GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and surrounding conditions | Distinguish the location-estimation issue from pairing; test under better detection conditions. |
This order prevents wasted steps. A no-power symptom is handled at the tag first. A setup symptom is handled in SmartThings after the tag responds. A map symptom is handled as a detection and environmental problem after registration is confirmed.
Common battery-replacement mistakes
Installing a similar-looking cell
Coin cells can look alike, but Samsung specifies CR2032 for the SmartTag2. Check the marking on the replacement before opening the tray and again if the tag will not respond.
Reversing the positive side
The positive terminal must align with the tag’s + mark. Reversing it is one of the first conditions to correct when a newly changed battery appears dead.
Leaving the tray partly inserted
A tray that stops short or is inserted in the wrong orientation can prevent reliable contact. Remove it, check its alignment, and slide it fully home without forcing it.

SmartThings onboarding confirms that the phone can add the tag; it does not guarantee an immediate, precise location in every environment. Bluetooth range, GPS reception, Wi-Fi signals, and surrounding conditions affect detection and location reporting.
Repeating setup before restoring power
If the tag is silent or frozen, return to the battery and restart steps before repeatedly opening SmartThings. The app cannot complete onboarding with a tag that is not powered and responsive.
Treating an estimate as a warranty
The approximately 500-day normal-use and 700-day power-saving figures come from Samsung Japan’s 2024 guide. They are estimates, not a promise that every CR2032 will last exactly that long. Replace the cell when the tag’s behavior or SmartThings status indicates depletion, rather than waiting for a specific calendar day.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I change the Galaxy SmartTag2 battery?
Use a CR2032 coin cell. Eject the rear tray with the supplied pin or a small clip, remove the old cell, align the new cell’s positive terminal with the tag’s + mark, and slide the tray fully back in.
Is the SmartTag2 battery rechargeable?
No. The SmartTag2 uses a replaceable CR2032 coin-cell battery rather than a cable-rechargeable battery.
How long should a SmartTag2 CR2032 battery last?
Samsung Japan’s 2024 estimate is about 500 days in typical use and about 700 days in power-saving mode. Actual life varies, so these figures are not guarantees.
Why does my SmartTag2 not turn on after I changed the battery?
Check that the cell is a CR2032, the positive terminal matches the + mark, and the tray is fully seated in the correct orientation. Remove and reinsert the battery once. If it remains unresponsive, use Samsung’s force-restart sequence and hold the button for more than seven seconds until the reset sound.
What if SmartThings cannot find my SmartTag2?
Keep the powered tag close to the phone, open SmartThings, and follow the device-found prompt if it appears. If it does not, use Add device, select the tag or tracker category, and retry after confirming that the tag responds.
Why is my SmartTag2 paired but showing an inaccurate location?
Pairing and location estimation are different. Check nearby Bluetooth detection and proximity, then consider GPS, Wi-Fi, and surrounding conditions. A delayed or imprecise map position does not automatically mean the battery replacement failed.
Can I use any coin cell that looks like a CR2032?
Use the specified CR2032 designation. Samsung’s SmartTag2 instructions do not establish another coin-cell type as an alternative.
When should I contact Samsung?
Contact current Samsung support when correct battery type, polarity, tray seating, reinsertion, the more-than-seven-second force restart, nearby SmartThings retries, and the manual Add device route do not restore operation.
The Bottom Line
Install a correctly oriented CR2032, seat the SmartTag2 tray fully, and test the tag nearby. If it remains silent, remove and reinsert the battery, then use the SmartTag2 force-restart sequence while holding the button for more than seven seconds. For setup failures, use SmartThings’ Add device flow and retry with the tag close to the phone. For map problems after pairing, check Bluetooth, proximity, GPS, and Wi-Fi separately. If those documented steps fail, contact Samsung support for your device and region.
