You can replace both Fairbuds 2 earbud batteries and the charging-case battery yourself. Fairphone’s design is tool-free and glue-free: the earbud cell sits in a rotating tray beneath a removable silicone ring, while the case battery is reached by removing one bottom screw and lifting out the case core. The earbud swap takes about 5–10 minutes; the case-battery swap takes about 2 minutes, according to Fairphone’s repair listings.
Use the correct Fairphone replacement part, observe the polarity marks, never open either component while it is charging, and recycle the removed lithium battery through an appropriate local service.

Which Fairbuds 2 part should you replace?
A battery problem and a charging-electronics problem can produce similar symptoms. Identify the replaceable module before ordering a part.
| Part | Where it is installed | Access method | Fairphone listed price | Typical replacement time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fairbuds 2 earbud battery replacement kit | Inside one left or right earbud | Remove the silicone ring and open the rotating battery tray | €9.95, current product-page listing | About 5–10 minutes, Fairphone repair-portal estimate |
| Fairbuds 2 charging-case battery replacement | At the bottom of the charging-case core | Remove one bottom screw, open the cover and lift out the core | €12.95, current product-page listing | About 2 minutes, Fairphone repair-portal estimate |
| Fairbuds 2 charging-case core | The case’s charging electronics | Replace the separate core module | €29.95, current product-page listing | Not stated by Fairphone |
The three options are not interchangeable. The €9.95 kit is for an individual left or right earbud, the €12.95 part is the cell in the case, and the €29.95 core is the case’s electronics module. If only one earbud has short runtime, start with that earbud rather than buying a case part. If the case stores little energy, start with its battery. If a known-good battery is present but the case does not deliver charge reliably, the core is the more relevant module.

Fairphone identifies the earbud battery as an LIR1054. Its Fairbuds family FAQ identifies the charging-case battery as 500mAh. The retrieved Fairphone material does not publish a complete Fairbuds 2 chemistry, dimensions and protection-specification set, so do not substitute a similar-looking cell based only on appearance or nominal capacity.
Before opening anything
Confirm the symptom
A worn earbud battery usually affects one earbud: it runs for much less time, shuts down quickly or refuses to hold a charge even after the contacts are clean. A worn case battery commonly causes the case to lose charge rapidly or fail to recharge the earbuds away from a cable.
Compare both earbuds under similar use. If one side behaves normally and the other dies quickly, the side-specific battery and its tray are sensible first checks. If both earbuds fail to charge at once, inspect the case, its contacts and its charging behavior before repeatedly opening both earbuds.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the case battery is known to be healthy but the earbuds still do not charge, the charging-case core may be at fault. The core is a separately replaceable module that contains the case electronics. Replacing the battery will not repair a failed charging circuit.
Get the correct part
- For an earbud, order the Fairbuds 2 earbud battery replacement kit and select the side you need if the seller presents left and right options.
- For the case, order the Fairbuds 2 charging-case battery replacement.
- If a new case battery does not cure charging problems and the battery itself is working, consider the Fairbuds 2 charging-case core instead.
- Do not infer compatibility from an unbranded LIR1054-looking cell or another battery with a similar size. The connector, protection and physical fit must match the Fairbuds 2 design.
Fairphone’s listed prices are €9.95 for the earbud replacement kit, €12.95 for the case battery and €29.95 for the case core. Those figures are useful for deciding whether to repair one module or replace a larger assembly, but prices can vary with country, taxes, shipping and date. An independent marketplace listing is not automatically Fairphone stock; verify the seller and part identity before ordering.
Prepare a safe workspace
- Disconnect the earbuds and case from every cable and stop charging before opening them.
- Work on a flat, stable, well-lit surface where a small screw cannot roll away.
- Keep the battery and contact surfaces free of grease, dust and moisture.
- Have a local battery-recycling route ready for the old cell. Do not place a lithium battery in ordinary household waste.
Fairphone describes both swaps as tool-free and glue-free. You normally need only a fingernail for the earbud ring and, for the case, a suitable driver for the single bottom screw. Fairphone says a prying tool can be used for the silicone ring if necessary, but the ring and tray should not be forced. “Tool-free” means no specialist repair equipment or adhesive is required; it does not mean the case screw can be removed without a driver.
How to replace a Fairbuds 2 earbud battery
1. Remove the silicone ring
- Make sure the earbud is disconnected from a cable and is not charging.
- Hold the earbud securely and use a fingernail to pull the silicone ring up and over the outside of the earbud.
- If your fingernail cannot start the ring, use a suitable prying tool carefully. Lift the ring gradually rather than stretching one section sharply.
The silicone ring helps protect the earbud against rain and sweat. Overstretching it can reduce how well it fits and seals afterward, so remove it slowly and keep its shape. Do not hook a sharp object into the silicone or drag a tool across the housing; a small nick can leave the ring uneven when you reinstall it.

2. Open the rotating battery tray
- With the ring removed, locate the rotating battery tray.
- Open the tray gently. It does not swing completely free, so treat it as a delicate hinge rather than a removable lid.
- Do not pry against the hinge or twist the tray beyond its designed travel.
Fairphone specifically recommends not fiddling with the mechanism unless necessary, so the silicone ring and tray remain serviceable for as long as possible. If the tray stops before its normal open position, stop and look for a misaligned ring edge or battery rather than levering it farther.
3. Remove and orient the new cell
- Take the old battery out of the tray without scraping or bending the contacts.
- Place the replacement battery in the tray with its positive and negative ends aligned to the tray’s + and − marks.
- Keep your hands and the battery clean. Grease or dust between the cell and contacts can cause intermittent operation or charging failure.
Polarity is not optional. A cell that physically fits but is reversed can prevent the earbud from working and may damage the device. Check the marks on the tray, not just the orientation of the old cell, before closing anything. If the markings are obscured, clean the area gently rather than guessing.
4. Close the tray and reinstall the ring
- Close the battery tray until it clicks shut. If it does not close normally, reopen it and check the battery’s position instead of applying more force.
- Fit the silicone ring back over the earbud.
- Align the ring’s raised outer lip correctly around the housing.
- Check the marking on the inside of the ring: L identifies the left earbud and R identifies the right.
The ring should sit evenly without a twisted edge or a section pulled excessively tight. A distorted ring can compromise the protection it provides against rain and sweat. Run a finger around the whole perimeter and reseat any rolled or folded section before testing the earbud.
5. Power the earbud and test it
- Place the earbud in the charging case and close and reopen the lid, or hold the earbud’s touch control for three seconds to power it on.
- Check that the earbud is detected and begins charging when seated in the case.
- Play audio and observe whether runtime and connection behavior are normal.
Testing immediately catches a reversed cell, a tray that did not click shut or a ring that prevents proper seating in the case. If the earbud powers on but is not detected, reseat it and inspect the charging contacts before reopening the tray. Recycle the old battery through your local battery-recycling service. Do not puncture, crush, short-circuit or dismantle it.

How to replace the Fairbuds 2 charging-case battery
1. Isolate the case
- Remove the earbuds from the case if convenient.
- Disconnect the case from its charging cable and make sure it is not charging.
- Put the closed case upside down on a flat, stable surface.
Keeping the earbuds out of the shell gives you a clear view when the cover is opened and prevents them from being dropped while the core is lifted out. The case should be stable before you start so the screw and core cannot slide away.
2. Remove the bottom screw and core
- Remove the single screw on the bottom of the charging case.
- Open the cover.
- Lift the charging-case core out of the outer shell. Work around the housing gently; the core is the functional module and should not be dropped.
Fairphone’s instructions identify the battery at the bottom of this core. You do not need to separate glued layers or use a heat source. Keep the screw in a small container while the core is out, and do not force the shell if the core does not lift easily; recheck that the cover is fully open and that the screw is completely removed.
3. Exchange the battery
- Remove the old battery from the bottom of the core.
- Install the replacement battery in the same position and orientation.
- Ensure it is seated flat and that no wire, contact or edge is trapped under the cell.
The 500mAh figure is the capacity Fairphone gives for the Fairbuds family case battery. It is not a substitute for confirming the Fairbuds 2 part number, physical fit and protection arrangement. Do not tape in a loose substitute or modify the cell to make it fit.

4. Reassemble and check charging
- Lower the core back into the outer shell.
- Close the case cover.
- Reinstall and tighten the bottom screw until secure. Do not overtighten it.
- Connect the case to its charger and confirm that its charging indicator behaves normally.
- Place the earbuds inside and verify that both begin charging.
Reassemble in the reverse order: the core belongs inside the shell before the cover is closed and the screw is tightened. If the cover does not sit flush, stop and check that the core and battery are seated correctly instead of tightening the screw harder. Recycle the removed case battery through an appropriate local lithium-battery route.

| Symptom after replacement | Checks to make | Likely next step |
|---|---|---|
| Earbud remains dead | Confirm the tray clicked shut, polarity matches the +/− marks, the ring is seated and the earbud was powered by closing and reopening the case or holding the touch control for three seconds. | Reopen the tray carefully and inspect the cell-to-contact fit. If the cell is correct and clean but the earbud still does not respond, the fault may not be the battery. |
| Earbud works but does not charge | Check that the battery is fully seated, the contacts are clean and the earbud sits correctly in the case. | Clean and reseat the battery and earbud. Avoid bending contacts or forcing the tray. |
| Case still loses power quickly | Confirm the replacement is the Fairbuds 2 case battery, is seated correctly and the screw and core are fully reassembled. | If the battery itself is functioning but charging behavior remains abnormal, investigate the separately replaceable charging-case core. |
| Neither earbud charges in a known-good case | Check both earbud trays, polarity, ring fit and contact cleanliness. | Two simultaneous earbud failures are less likely to be solved by repeatedly forcing the trays; seek support or examine the case and charging contacts. |
Distinguishing a battery fault from a charging-core fault
The charging-case core is the module that contains the case electronics. Fairphone notes that if the Fairbuds have charging issues while the battery is working fine, the charging core may be the problem and can also be replaced. This distinction matters because installing another battery cannot repair failed charging electronics.
- A case that cannot retain energy at all, even when its charging behavior is otherwise normal, points first toward the case battery.
- A case with a healthy battery but unreliable or absent charging output to the earbuds points toward the charging core or contacts.
- If only one earbud fails while the case and the other earbud behave normally, start with that earbud’s battery and tray inspection.
Use the least invasive check first: confirm the cable is disconnected during the repair, inspect seating and cleanliness, then test with the replacement cell. Opening the case again and again can wear the screw, shell or contacts without addressing a core fault. The core is a separate €29.95 option, so it is worth identifying the symptom before ordering it.
Time, tools and cost comparison
Fairphone’s repair portal estimates 5–10 minutes for an earbud-battery replacement and about 2 minutes for a charging-case-battery replacement. The shorter case estimate reflects access through one bottom screw and the removable core; the earbud takes longer because the silicone ring must be removed and the rotating tray must be handled carefully. Allow extra time for inspection and testing, especially on a first repair.
No adhesive, heat gun or specialist opening kit is called for. The earbud normally needs a fingernail; a non-sharp prying tool is optional if the ring is difficult to start. The case needs a suitable driver for its single screw. If a task requires force, improvised blades or heat, stop: that is outside Fairphone’s intended tool-free, glue-free procedure.
At the listed prices, replacing one earbud cell costs less than replacing the €29.95 case core, while a case battery is €12.95. Buying the core for a case whose battery is simply worn adds cost without fixing the underlying diagnosis. Conversely, replacing the battery repeatedly will not restore a defective charging core.
Care after the repair
Preserve the silicone seal
Seat the ring evenly and avoid repeatedly removing it unless needed. The ring contributes to protection from rain and sweat; stretching, twisting or nicking it can reduce that protection.

Keep contacts clean
Dust, skin oil and debris can interrupt electrical contact. Handle replacement cells by their edges where possible, and inspect the tray and charging contacts before closing the device.
Do not force the mechanism
The rotating earbud tray is intentionally compact and does not open completely. Resistance is a reason to stop and check alignment, not to increase leverage. Forcing the tray or prying against the hinge can turn a low-cost battery swap into a larger repair.
Recycle correctly
Store the old cell so its terminals cannot contact metal objects, and take it to a local battery-recycling service that accepts lithium batteries. If a battery is swollen, hot, leaking or damaged, stop handling it, move people away from the area and follow local hazardous-battery guidance.

When to stop and seek help
Stop the repair if a cell is swollen, hot, punctured or leaking; if the tray hinge or case shell cracks; if a screw will not release without excessive force; or if the replacement battery does not match the Fairbuds 2 part. Do not continue operating a damaged lithium battery. A repair service or Fairphone support can help determine whether the remaining fault is the earbud electronics, charging contacts or case core.
For normal wear, however, Fairbuds 2 is designed so owners can renew the earbud and case batteries without glue or specialized repair equipment. Following the polarity marks, protecting the silicone ring and treating the tray as a fragile hinge are the three precautions that prevent most avoidable damage.

Which battery does the Fairbuds 2 earbud use?
Fairphone’s Fairbuds FAQ identifies the earbud cell as LIR1054. Order the Fairbuds 2 replacement kit rather than relying on a cell that merely has the same appearance, because fit, contacts and protection must also match.
What is the Fairbuds 2 charging-case battery capacity?
Fairphone Support lists 500mAh for the Fairbuds family charging-case battery. Fairphone does not publish a complete Fairbuds 2 chemistry, dimensions and protection specification set in the cited material, so capacity alone is not enough to confirm compatibility.
How long does each replacement take?
Fairphone’s repair portal estimates about 5–10 minutes for an earbud battery and about 2 minutes for the charging-case battery. Allow additional time for checking polarity, cleaning contacts, reseating the silicone ring and testing the result.

If the battery is correctly installed and working but the case still does not charge the earbuds reliably, the separately replaceable charging-case core may be the failed module. The core contains the case electronics and is listed separately from the €12.95 battery.
Do I need to replace both earbud batteries at once?
No. The earbud kit is for an individual left or right earbud. If one side has clearly shorter runtime while the other works normally, replace and test that side first. Inspect both trays and contacts if both earbuds show the same charging problem.
How do I know the earbud battery is installed correctly?
The cell must sit flat in the rotating tray with its positive and negative ends aligned to the tray’s + and − marks. Close the tray until it clicks, reinstall the ring with its raised lip aligned, then place the earbud in the case or hold its touch control for three seconds to power it on.
What should I do with the old battery?
Keep it away from metal objects and take it to a local service that accepts lithium batteries. Never put it in ordinary household waste, puncture it, crush it, short-circuit it or dismantle it. If it is swollen, hot or leaking, stop handling it and follow local hazardous-battery guidance.
The Bottom Line
Replace the Fairbuds 2 earbud cell through the silicone ring and rotating tray, matching the +/− marks; replace the case cell by removing one bottom screw and lifting out the core. Fairphone lists the parts at €9.95 and €12.95, with estimated times of 5–10 minutes and about 2 minutes. If a known-good case battery still will not charge the earbuds, investigate the separately replaceable €29.95 charging-case core instead.
