For an earbud, remove the silicone ring, open the rotating battery tray, install the supported AUFBAT-1/LIR1054 lithium-ion cell with the polarity aligned, and close the tray until it clicks. The case uses a separate procedure: remove one bottom screw, lift out the case core, replace the battery at its base, and reassemble it.
Disconnect all charging cables first, work on a flat stable surface, keep the cell and your hands clean, and use only the specified battery or an official replacement kit. An incorrect lithium-ion cell can damage the earbuds or create a safety hazard.

What you need before opening a Fairbuds 2
Set up the repair before touching the battery. Fairphone’s support instructions say the earbuds must not be charging or connected by cable, and the work surface should be flat and stable so a small cell or silicone ring cannot roll away. Have the replacement cell ready, a clean dry work area, and a fingernail or suitable non-damaging prying tool for the silicone ring.
- Correct battery: AUFBAT-1 / LIR1054, or the battery supplied in the official Fairbuds 2 replacement kit.
- Clean handling: Dust and grease on the contacts can make the connection unreliable, so wash and dry your hands and keep the cell free of fingerprints and debris.
- No force: Never bend, puncture, crush or force a cell into an open tray.
- Temperature: The lithium-ion cell is specified for operation from -10 °C to +40 °C. Do not charge it below 0 °C or above +40 °C.
- Waste plan: Keep the removed cell away from metal objects and take it to a local battery or electronic-waste collection point.
The official health and safety guide warns: “CAUTION RISK OF EXPLOSION IF BATTERY IS REPLACED BY AN INCORRECT TYPE. DISPOSE OF USED BATTERIES ACCORDING TO THE INSTRUCTIONS.” Treat that warning literally; a physically similar button cell is not automatically a safe substitute.

Which Fairbuds 2 battery fits?
The supported earbud replacement is identified as AUFBAT-1 / LIR1054. The same specification applies to the left and right earbuds. Do not substitute another chemistry, voltage, size or model number simply because it appears to fit. The documentation does not validate generic third-party cells, so their safety, polarity markings, dimensions and discharge behavior are not established for this device.

The listed prices are euro prices shown in Fairphone product information on 18 October 2026; the material does not establish a regional tax, shipping charge or recurring promotion. The company’s FAQ calls the earbud spare part an LIR1054 battery and says it aims to support Fairbuds spare parts until the end of 2030.
Replace an earbud battery: exact procedure
1. Power down and stabilize the workspace
Take both earbuds out of the charging case, stop any charging session and unplug any cable. Place the earbud you are repairing on a level, stable surface. Repair one earbud at a time so the left and right parts do not get mixed up.

2. Remove the silicone ring
Use a fingernail or a suitable prying tool to lift the silicone ring. Pull it up and over the outer portion of the earbud, working gradually around the ring instead of yanking one point. Avoid overstretching it: the ring forms part of the earbud’s protection when it is refitted.

3. Locate and open the rotating tray
With the ring removed, identify the rotating battery tray and its + and – indicators. Gently rotate or open the tray. It is intended to open only partway; it does not swing completely free of the earbud. Do not try to detach it or pry under the electronics.
4. Remove the old cell
Lift the old battery out of the tray without scraping, puncturing or bending it. If it is stuck, stop and reassess the tray position rather than levering against the battery. A swollen, hot, leaking or damaged cell should not be handled further than necessary; place the earbud in a safe, cool location away from combustible material and follow local hazardous-battery guidance.
5. Match polarity before inserting the replacement
Compare the positive and negative ends of the new AUFBAT-1/LIR1054 cell with the tray’s markings. Set it into the tray so the terminals align exactly with + and –. Do not force the battery into the earbud while the tray is open. If the cell does not sit naturally in the recess, remove it and check that you have the correct model and orientation.
6. Keep contacts clean
Before closing, inspect the cell and contact area for dust, lint or fingerprints. Fairphone notes that grease and dust can reduce connection reliability. Handle the cell by its edges and use only a clean, dry method to remove visible debris; do not apply liquid or abrasive cleaner inside the tray.

7. Close the tray until it clicks
Rotate the tray back into its closed position with light, even pressure. A distinct click indicates that the tray has latched. If it will not click, reopen it and check polarity, seating and debris. Do not clamp the tray shut with excessive force, because that can deform the cell or the retaining mechanism.
8. Restore the silicone seal
Fit the silicone ring back over the outer earbud. Align its raised outer lip with the corresponding edge and work around the circumference until it sits evenly. An incorrectly positioned lip can leave the battery compartment less protected and may allow the ring to lift during normal use. The official kit’s two replacement rings are useful if an original ring has stretched, torn or lost its shape.
9. Restart and check operation
Put the repaired earbud in its charging case, close the lid, then reopen it. Alternatively, press the earbud touch control for three seconds. Confirm that it powers up and connects normally before using it. If it does not respond, do not repeatedly press or insert another battery; use the troubleshooting checks below.

The case battery is a separate repair from the earbud cells. Fairphone’s case guide describes a bottom screw and a removable internal core; do not try to reach the case battery through an earbud tray.

- Disconnect the case: Remove the earbuds, stop charging and unplug every cable. Work on a flat, stable surface.
- Remove the bottom screw: Take out the screw on the underside of the charging case and keep it in a small container so it cannot be lost.
- Open the cover: Separate the cover carefully. Avoid pulling on wires or using a metal tool where it could short contacts.
- Remove the case core: Lift the charging-case core out of the shell as described in the case guide. The battery is located at the bottom of this core.
- Exchange the cell: Remove the old case battery and insert the replacement in the same orientation and position. Use the specified replacement rather than an unverified cell.
- Reassemble: Put the core back into the shell, close the cover and reinstall the bottom screw. Tighten it securely but do not strip the fastener or deform the housing.
- Test charging: Connect the case to its charger and check that it accepts charge and recognizes the earbuds. If the case becomes unusually hot, smells abnormal or behaves erratically, disconnect it and stop using it.
The documented case procedure does not provide a different capacity option or a generic substitute. The listed case specification is 500 mAh, so a replacement advertised only by physical size is not enough evidence of compatibility.
Official kit versus an unverified third-party cell
An official kit is the least ambiguous choice because it is identified for Fairbuds 2 and the earbud kit includes two new silicone rings. A third-party listing may be cheaper or easier to find in some regions, but the available documentation does not validate generic cells. Use the following checks before considering any source:

If a listing does not clearly identify AUFBAT-1/LIR1054 for an earbud, or does not provide a confirmed specification for the case battery, do not install it. The risk is not limited to poor battery life: an incorrect lithium-ion type can create a device and health-and-safety hazard.
Troubleshooting after replacement
The earbud does not power on
- Reopen the tray and verify that the cell’s positive and negative ends match the printed indicators.
- Check that the tray is fully closed and latched; a partially open tray may not press the contacts together.
- Inspect for dust or grease and refit the cell cleanly.
- Place the earbud in the case, close and reopen the lid, or hold its touch control for three seconds to restart it.
- If it still fails, stop experimenting with other cells. The battery, tray or electronics may require service.
The tray will not close or click
- Remove the cell and confirm it is an AUFBAT-1/LIR1054 of the intended dimensions.
- Check that it is sitting flat and is not upside down.
- Look for a displaced silicone ring, lint or debris interfering with the tray.
- Never press harder to overcome resistance; forcing the latch can damage the cell or earbud.
The earbud connects but charging is unreliable
- Clean, dry contact surfaces and ensure no grease remains on the cell.
- Check that the silicone ring’s raised lip is aligned and not lifting the earbud out of its charging position.
- Confirm that the case itself has charge and that the earbud sits fully in its slot.
The case does not charge after its battery replacement
- Disconnect the cable and inspect that the core is seated correctly in the shell.
- Verify that the cover is fully closed and the bottom screw is installed without pinching the housing.
- Reconnect using a known-good charging cable and observe whether the case becomes hot or emits an unusual odor. If either occurs, disconnect immediately and do not continue testing.
Safety limits you should not ignore
Fairbuds 2 uses lithium-ion cells. Do not puncture, crush, bend, short, incinerate or expose a removed cell to excessive heat. Keep a damaged battery away from children, flammable materials and metal objects that could bridge its terminals. The specified operating range is -10 °C to +40 °C, and charging is not permitted below 0 °C or above +40 °C.

Do not perform the repair while the product is connected to a cable, and do not charge an earbud with its tray open. If a battery is swollen, leaking, hot or visibly damaged, do not reinstall it or place it in household trash. Local battery and electronic-waste collection services can provide the correct handling route.
Recycling the removed battery
Place the old lithium-ion cell in the collection stream required by your municipality. Fairphone’s instructions specifically direct owners to recycle old batteries locally, and the health and safety guide says used batteries must be disposed of according to instructions. Do not put the loose cell in a general waste bin or mail it without following the carrier’s lithium-battery rules.
Before transport, prevent the terminals from contacting keys, coins or other metal. A collection point can tell you whether the cell needs insulating tape, a protective bag or another preparation step under local regulations.
When replacement is complete
A successful earbud repair leaves the tray clicked shut, the ring evenly seated and the earbud responsive after a case-lid restart or three-second touch-control press. A successful case repair leaves the core fully inside its shell, the cover closed and the screw secure, with the case accepting charge without abnormal heat or odor. Keep the product within the stated temperature limits and monitor the first charging cycle rather than leaving a newly repaired device unattended.
