Before removing anything
- Turn the headphones off. This is part of Sony’s updated replacement guidance. Put the headphones on the work surface with the earcup you are servicing easy to support.
- Confirm the replacement. Check that the package identifies WH-1000XM5 compatibility and that the replacement has an L or R marking. If the markings are missing, stop and confirm the part with the seller before disassembly.

Step-by-step: remove the old ear pad
- Hold the earcup housing plate. Keep the headphone shell stable with one hand. Do not squeeze the cushion to gain leverage.
- Find the inner perimeter. Look inside the opening of the earpad for the retaining claws. Sony identifies six claws on each pad.
- Insert the disassembly tool at the plate. Place it between the rigid earpad plate and the retaining claws, not through the soft cushion. Use only the amount of movement needed to release a claw.
- Work around the edge. Move from one retaining point to the next, keeping the tool controlled and close to the plate. Do not yank the pad or force the tool deep into the earcup.
- Lift the released pad away. Once the claws have disengaged, remove the pad without brushing the exposed driver.
- Inspect the cushioning material. Check the material behind the earpad. If it has lifted or shifted, return it carefully to its correct position without touching the internal driver or other headphone components.
Sony’s specific warning is: “Do not pull the earpad cushion portion of the earpad. This may cause damage to the earpad.” Treat the driver as a no-touch area immediately after removal.

Step-by-step: install the replacement pad
- Identify the correct side. Match the replacement’s L or R mark to the corresponding earcup. Use the pad’s uneven features as a second orientation check; do not rely on appearance alone.
- Align the two pegs. On the rear of the replacement pad, line up the two pegs with the two small holes in the housing block. If the pegs do not meet the holes naturally, rotate the pad rather than pressing harder.
- Seat the plate. Once the pegs and holes are aligned, position the pad so the retaining claws are over their hooks.
- Press around the pad. Apply controlled pressure to the pad plate until the claws attach and click into place. Work around the perimeter so the plate sits evenly instead of forcing one side down while another remains raised.
- Check for wrinkles. Sony instructs you to lift the inner lower side of the pad gently and work around its sides to remove wrinkles. Use the edge of the pad, not a sharp object, to smooth the material.
- Test the attachment. Gently pull the installed pad to confirm that it is secure. The pull should be light; this is a fit check, not a strength test.
Alignment details that prevent a bad fit
Use both the L/R mark and the uneven features
A pad can look close to correct while still being rotated incorrectly. Confirm the printed L or R designation, then compare the pad’s uneven contour with the matching contour of the earcup. Both checks should agree before you press the claws into place.
Do not force mismatched pegs
The rear pegs are designed to meet two small housing holes. Resistance at this stage usually means the pad is rotated, the wrong side is being installed, or the replacement is not the correct model. Remove it, reassess the orientation, and do not use extra pressure to make the parts fit.
Keep the cushioning material flat and correctly located
The cushioning layer behind the pad contributes to the seal around the earcup. Sony warns that a displaced or incorrectly positioned layer can interfere with noise cancellation and cause echo. Correct its position before seating the replacement; do not leave a fold trapped under the plate.

- Visual seating: The pad plate should sit evenly around the earcup, with no section visibly lifted.
- Retainer engagement: The claws should have clicked onto the hooks as you pressed around the perimeter.
- Orientation: The L/R mark and uneven features should correspond to the correct side.
- Cushion condition: The material behind the pad should be in its intended position, without a loose edge or fold.

When to stop and use professional service
- The specified disassembly tool is unavailable and you would need to improvise.
- A claw, hook, peg, or earpad plate appears cracked or deformed.
- The pad will not release without force on the cushion or housing.
- The exposed driver was touched, punctured, or contaminated during removal.
- The cushioning material will not stay correctly positioned.
