Because the gadget is unspecified, there is no universal battery, opening sequence, adhesive method, or screw layout that can be given safely. Use the general workflow below to plan the job, then switch to the exact instructions for your device before opening its case.

Start with the exact gadget, not a generic battery
Find the model designation before buying a part or lifting a cover. Look on the rear label, inside the battery compartment, in the operating system’s device-information screen, or on the original paperwork. Record the complete model number and revision, not just a product family name. Older gadgets may have several visually similar versions with different connectors, dimensions, voltage requirements, or cable locations.

Use that identification to locate a repair guide written for the exact device. A general safety page cannot tell you which screws to remove, where the battery connector sits, whether the cell is glued down, or whether opening the case damages a seal. Model-specific instructions are essential for both compatibility and the order of disassembly.

Questions to answer before ordering a part

If you cannot find a guide that matches the complete model number, pause rather than treating a guide for a similar-looking gadget as interchangeable. The same caution applies to replacement kits: a kit described only as “for this series” is not proof of compatibility.
Recognize when the repair must stop
Lithium-ion cells store substantial energy in a small package. A puncture or severe deformation can cause rapid heating and fire. Read the safety guidance from iFixit’s Device Safety page before working on a device that uses this chemistry.
Swelling
A raised screen, separating case, warped back, or a battery that no longer lies flat can indicate swelling. Do not operate or charge a gadget with a swollen battery. Power it down, isolate it from combustible materials, and arrange qualified help; removing a swollen cell can itself be hazardous. Heat, odor, smoke, or fire
Do not continue a normal battery replacement if the gadget or cell is unusually hot, emits a strong smell, is smoking, or is on fire. Move away and seek a qualified repair professional or appropriate emergency assistance rather than trying to finish the removal. Do not puncture, squeeze, or probe the cell to “make it safe.”
Uncertainty about your ability
Opening a device can expose fragile display cables, antennas, capacitors, or a battery that is tightly bonded to the case. If you cannot clearly identify the battery connector or the next step in the exact guide, stop and ask a professional. A repair is not successful if the replacement works but the case, display, or original cell is damaged in the process.

Prepare a controlled workspace and the right tools
Prepare the exact tools listed by the device guide before opening anything. A plastic electronics pry tool is useful around a lithium-ion battery because it reduces the chance of creating a conductive or sharp contact with the cell. The tool category is a safety aid, not a guarantee that every repair is safe or that one shape fits every case.
Tool checklist
- Model-specific drivers: Use the sizes and security types named by the guide. An almost-fitting driver can strip a small screw and make later removal harder.
- Plastic pry tools: Use them where the guide permits, especially near the battery. Keep even a plastic tool away from the cell’s foil pouch and leads.
- Parts containers: Keep screws separated by location and note their original positions. Screws of different lengths can damage internal components if swapped.
- Replacement adhesive specified for the model: Do not substitute an unknown adhesive merely because it is available.
- Lighting and a clear surface: You need to see cable routing, labels, and any deformation before applying force.
Keep sharp metal tools away from the battery. If the guide requires a metal tool for a particular fastener, use it only for that fastener and never as a lever against the cell. Do not use force to compensate for a missed screw or an unseen clip.

A safe, model-aware replacement workflow
The sequence below is a planning framework, not a universal disassembly recipe. At every stage, follow the exact guide for your gadget’s construction.
- Confirm the model and guide. Match the complete model number on the gadget to the guide and the replacement part. Read the entire procedure, including warnings and reassembly notes, before ordering or opening the case.
- Shut down and disconnect power. Use the device’s normal shutdown command, then unplug the charger, dock, USB cable, or any other external source. “Off” is not a substitute for disconnecting external power. If the gadget has a removable power source or accessory battery, remove it as the guide directs.
- Inspect before opening. Look for a lifted panel, unusual heat, odor, leakage, smoke, or a case that is being pushed apart. If swelling or another danger sign is present, do not proceed with ordinary removal; isolate the device and obtain professional help.
- Open the case exactly as documented. Remove only the fasteners and covers named in the guide. Note screw locations and cable routing. Work slowly at clips and seams; if a panel will not release with the specified method, stop and check for a hidden screw or cable instead of increasing force.
- Locate and disconnect the battery. Follow the guide’s order for disconnecting the battery from the main board. Keep tools and fingers away from exposed contacts and the cell itself. Never pull on a cable when the instructions identify a connector or locking tab.
- Release the battery using the approved method. Some models use screws, while others use adhesive or a removable pull strip. Use only the method and materials stated for your device. Do not puncture the cell or bend it sharply while lifting it.
- Manage adhesive carefully. If the guide calls for a solvent, use it sparingly and follow its handling instructions. Solvents can be flammable, and acetone can damage plastic components. Do not pour an unapproved solvent into the case or near displays, seals, or connectors.
- Compare the old and new parts before installation. Check connector shape, cable position, physical dimensions, labels, and any protective film against the guide and the removed battery. If anything differs, stop and resolve compatibility before connecting it.
- Install without trapping cables. Place the replacement in the orientation shown by the guide, apply only the specified adhesive or fasteners, and route cables through their original channels. A pinched cable or unsupported cell can fail when the case is closed.
- Reconnect and reassemble in the documented order. Make sure connectors are fully seated and shields, brackets, clips, and screws return to their original locations. Do not force a cover closed; resistance usually means a misplaced cable, screw, or battery.
- Perform a cautious function check. Start the gadget only after the guide says it is safe to reconnect power. Confirm that it boots, recognizes the battery, and accepts a normal charge. Stop using it if it becomes unusually hot, smells strongly, swells, smokes, or behaves erratically.
- Dispose of the removed battery correctly. Once removed, take it to a collection point or recycler that accepts its battery type. Do not put it in household trash or ordinary mixed recycling.
Removing adhesive without damaging the case
Adhesive is one of the largest differences between gadget models. A guide may specify a pull strip, a mechanical release, or a solvent; those methods are not interchangeable. Read the complete model procedure before selecting a tool or chemical.
Never pry directly against a cell because it is merely “stuck.” Keep the pry tool shallow and in the area shown by the guide, and stop if the battery begins to crease, puncture, or deform. Excessive bending can damage a lithium-ion cell even when its outer covering appears intact.

If a solvent is permitted, treat it as flammable, use the smallest amount the guide calls for, and protect plastics and other parts from contact. Acetone may damage plastic components. Allowing a solvent to migrate under a display, into a connector, or onto a painted surface can create a second repair.

When several parts claim compatibility, compare evidence rather than selecting solely by the largest capacity number. The exact model guide and the supplier’s part identification should agree.

No option can be called universally best without the gadget model and evidence about those criteria. A part that fits physically but lacks the correct connector or electrical specification is not a safe substitute.
What to check after reassembly
Use the device’s normal battery or power screen to verify that the replacement is detected. A first boot can take longer than usual, but an absent battery indicator, repeated shutdowns, or a connector that will not stay seated is a reason to power down and revisit the model guide.
- Check that the case closes without pressure, gaps, or a raised area.
- Confirm that charging begins with the correct charger and cable for the gadget.
- Watch for abnormal heat, strong odor, smoke, swelling, or sudden shutdowns.
- Do not continue charging a part that shows any of those warning signs.
- If the gadget does not work, disconnect power before reopening it and inspect connector seating and cable routing according to the guide.
A successful boot does not prove that a battery is safe if it is physically distorted or heating abnormally. Treat physical warning signs as more important than a temporary operating test.

Recycle the old battery through the right channel
Battery acceptance varies by location and chemistry. Before dropping off the removed cell, call or check the collection point to confirm that it accepts that battery type and condition. iFixit’s electronics-recycling guidance explains why batteries and other electronics need dedicated handling.
Do not place a loose battery in household trash or ordinary recycling. A battery can be damaged by compaction and sorting equipment, creating a fire risk. Keep the removed cell isolated while you arrange a confirmed drop-off, and follow the recycler’s packaging and transport instructions.
When professional repair is the better choice
Choose a qualified repair professional when the battery is swollen, hot, smoking, or strongly scented; when the device cannot be safely isolated; when the battery is tightly bonded and the guide warns of removal hazards; or when you are unsure how to disconnect it. Professional help is also sensible when the gadget contains valuable data and a failed opening could damage the storage or display.
Bring the exact model number and describe any heat, swelling, odor, or charging event. Do not keep charging a suspect device while waiting for service. If the battery has already been removed, tell the recycler or technician its condition so they can use the appropriate handling process.

Working while the charger is connected
An apparently powered-down gadget can still receive external power. Unplug every source before opening it.
Using a metal blade as a general pry tool
A blade can puncture the cell, short contacts, or gouge the case. Use the tool type and location specified by the model guide, with plastic tools around the battery where recommended.
Forcing adhesive or a stuck cover
Force often means a screw, clip, cable, or adhesive layer has been missed. Stop, consult the guide, and change the approved method rather than increasing leverage.
Pouring on solvent
Solvents can ignite and can damage plastics. Use only an approved solvent, sparingly, and protect nearby components.
Throwing the old cell away
Household trash and ordinary recycling are not suitable disposal routes. Confirm a battery-accepting collection point before finishing the job.
