What the WH-1000XM6 pad replacement involves
The WH-1000XM6 earpads are designed to come off and go back on by hand. Sony’s specified method is deliberately simple: remove the pad by pulling it straight out from the earcup, perpendicular to the earcup surface, and install it by seating all five claws until they click. There is no Sony instruction in the cited care guidance to insert a pry tool, twist the pad, or lever against the earcup.

The same guidance covers cleaning around the exposed microphone mesh, dealing with sweat and moisture, and drying the headset. It does not establish a replacement interval, a hygiene schedule, a pad lifespan, or a water-resistance rating. Follow the cleaning steps when the headset is damp or dirty rather than assuming a fixed number of days between cleanings.
Prepare the headset and work area
Power and cable state
Turn the headphones off before you touch an earpad or begin cleaning. Disconnect the USB cable as well. These are Sony’s stated starting conditions for both care and pad removal; do not leave the headset powered or connected while working on it.
Keep the work surface free of magnetic debris
Choose a clean, dry work area away from iron sand and metal dust. Sony warns that the headset’s magnet can attract those particles. A clear surface also makes it easier to see whether a pad’s claws have seated correctly and prevents loose debris from being handled together with the pad.
Use only the materials Sony specifies
For moisture or sweat, have a 99% water-based wipe available. For the microphone mesh, use a cotton swab gently. Do not substitute a solvent-soaked cloth, abrasive material or a pointed implement. Sony specifically prohibits thinner, benzene and alcohol.
Do not remove a pad unless you need to
Sony advises removing the earpads only when necessary. If the pad is merely dusty on its outer surface and does not need replacement or access to the microphone mesh, clean the accessible area without taking it off. Removal creates an extra handling step, so reserve it for replacement or the cleaning access Sony describes.
Choose a compatible replacement before you pull the old pad
Sony’s care article establishes that the WH-1000XM6 pads are removable and replaceable in practice. Its separate repair guidance says replacement accessories may be purchased through Sony Parts & Accessories. The available material does not confirm a current WH-1000XM6-specific Sony part number, current official stock, or any particular marketplace listing.

When evaluating a listing, require an explicit WH-1000XM6 compatibility statement. A listing that names only an earlier or different headphone model does not establish fit for the XM6. Also check whether the offer is for a left pad, a right pad, or a matched left/right set; Sony says the sides cannot be swapped.

If a listing does not clearly identify the WH-1000XM6, do not infer compatibility from a photograph or from a claim that it fits “many Sony headphones.” If the headset or its pad has physical or cosmetic damage beyond a straightforward pad change, Sony’s repair guidance recommends evaluation by an authorized servicer.
Step-by-step: remove and install a WH-1000XM6 earpad
- Switch the headphones off. Use the normal power control and wait until the headset is off.
- Disconnect USB. Unplug the USB cable before handling either earcup.
- Move away from iron sand and metal dust. Work on a clean surface where magnetic debris cannot be drawn toward the headset.
- Identify the side. Confirm whether you are working on the left or right earcup. Keep the replacement for that side beside the corresponding earcup.
- Pull the old pad straight out. Hold the earcup securely and pull the earpad directly away from the earcup, perpendicular to its surface. Do not describe the motion as twisting, sliding around the rim or prying; Sony’s instruction is a straight pull.
- Set the removed pad aside. Keep it away from the work area if it carries sweat, moisture or debris. Avoid letting loose particles fall toward the exposed earcup.
- Clean the microphone mesh only if needed. With the pad off, gently use a cotton swab on the mesh in front of the microphones. The swab should touch lightly; do not push dirt into the headphones.
- Orient the replacement correctly. Match a left replacement to the left earcup or a right replacement to the right earcup. Sony says the two sides are not interchangeable.
- Seat the pad on the earcup. Align the pad with its corresponding mounting points and press it into place firmly and evenly.
- Confirm all five claws click. Continue pressing until every one of the five claws has clicked into position. A pad that appears attached but has not engaged all five claws is not fully installed.
- Repeat only when necessary. If both pads are being replaced, perform the same sequence on the other side, maintaining the left/right match.
Do not force a part that does not align. Stop, remove pressure, check that the replacement is for the WH-1000XM6 and confirm that you are using the correct side before trying again.
Clean the microphone area while the pad is off
Removing a pad can expose the microphone mesh in front of the microphones. Sony’s method is limited to a gentle cotton-swab pass over that mesh. The purpose is to lift surface debris, not to drive it through the mesh.
- Use a clean, dry cotton swab unless Sony’s instruction for a particular contaminant says otherwise; the cited guidance does not authorize adding liquid to the mesh.
- Touch the mesh gently and avoid pressing downward.
- Do not insert the swab through openings or scrape with a pin, pick or other hard object.
- Once the mesh is addressed, complete the pad installation so the earcup is not left exposed during ordinary handling.
Sony does not provide a numerical cleaning frequency for the microphone mesh. Clean it when you have a specific reason to do so, such as visible debris while the pad is already removed for replacement.
Remove sweat and moisture safely
Use a 99% water-based wipe
Sony directs users to wipe away sweat or moisture with 99% water-based wipes. Wipe the affected exterior surfaces rather than saturating the headset. The instruction is to wipe, not to wash, soak or flush the earcups.

Dry completely at room temperature
After wiping, let the headphones dry thoroughly at room temperature. Do not reassemble or put the headset away while moisture remains. Drying is part of Sony’s procedure, not an optional finishing step.
Why prompt drying matters
Sony warns that retained sweat or moisture can rust metal parts and can deteriorate or mold the earpads. That warning is why a damp pad should not be covered up immediately and why a headset that has become wet should be given time to dry fully.
Do not treat the headset as washable
The cited WH-1000XM6 guidance does not authorize rinsing and does not say that the headphones are waterproof. Keep water away from the assumption that a rinse is acceptable: use the specified wipe-and-dry method instead.

- Thinner: Sony lists it among the substances not to use.
- Benzene: Do not apply it to the pads, earcups, mesh or other headset surfaces.
- Alcohol: Sony’s warning includes alcohol; do not substitute an alcohol wipe for the specified 99% water-based wipe.
- Rinsing or soaking: Sony says to wipe and dry, and the guidance does not establish that the headset is waterproof.
- Improvised prying: Sony instructs a straight pull for removal. Do not insert a tool or lever against the earcup as part of the documented method.
- Pressure on the microphone mesh: A cotton swab may be used gently, but debris must not be pushed inward.
If a product label is unclear about its ingredients, do not assume it meets Sony’s 99% water-based requirement. Use a wipe whose composition is known or seek Sony service guidance.
Check the installation before wearing the headset
Inspect the replacement from all around the earcup. The pad should sit evenly against its mounting surface, with no visible section lifted because a claw missed its position. The decisive installation check is that all five claws clicked into place.
Verify the side one more time: left pad on the left earcup and right pad on the right earcup. If you cannot obtain a complete click pattern, remove the pad by the same straight-out motion and inspect alignment rather than increasing force. Do not wear the headset with a pad that is only partially engaged.

If you cleaned sweat or moisture, wait until the headset has dried thoroughly at room temperature before use. The cited guidance does not specify a shorter drying time, so do not substitute a guessed timer for the required condition of being thoroughly dry.

The pad will not come off
Recheck that the headset is off and USB is disconnected. Hold the earcup steady and pull the pad straight out, perpendicular to the earcup. Avoid rotating the pad or inserting a tool. If it still will not release without excessive force, stop and use an authorized servicer rather than risking physical damage.
The replacement will not click
First confirm that the part explicitly supports WH-1000XM6 and that it is the correct side. A left/right mismatch is not a minor orientation error: Sony says the pads are not interchangeable. Reposition the pad evenly and press firmly until all five claws engage. If the claws still do not click, do not force them; the part may not be the correct accessory.
Only some claws appear engaged
Remove the pad using the documented straight pull, realign it and try again. The installation is incomplete until all five claws click. Leaving some claws unseated can allow the pad to sit unevenly, so resolve the alignment issue before use.
There is debris near the microphones
With the pad off, use a cotton swab gently on the mesh in front of the microphones. Do not press debris through the mesh and do not use a sharp object. If contamination cannot be removed without pressure, stop and ask an authorized servicer to evaluate the headset.
The headset was exposed to sweat or moisture

The pad or earcup is physically damaged
Do not improvise a repair with adhesive, a tool or a solvent. Sony’s repair guidance recommends taking a device with physical or cosmetic damage to an authorized servicer for evaluation.
When Sony service is the better option
A normal pad change is a hand procedure, but service is appropriate when the headset itself has physical or cosmetic damage, when a pad cannot be removed without force, or when a replacement will not seat despite verified model and side compatibility. Sony’s repair-options guidance identifies authorized servicers for evaluation and says replacement accessories may be purchased through Parts & Accessories.
Because current stock and a specific WH-1000XM6 pad part number were not confirmed in the cited material, check Sony’s Parts & Accessories channel for present availability rather than assuming an older listing is valid.
