For the most predictable replacement, remove the sold listing from the local file list FFmpeg uses, verify the remaining files and paths, then restart the FFmpeg input or process with the revised list. Do not assume that editing a list file makes an already-running concat input reread it. FFmpeg’s documentation describes concat inputs and list-file options but does not promise live updates to an open input.
First identify which playlist you mean
“Playlist” can refer to separate parts of a YouTube Live workflow. The right replacement procedure depends on which one is active:

For the common arrangement in which FFmpeg reads a local concat list and sends media to YouTube, change the local source list—not a YouTube HLS playlist. See the YouTube Live Streaming API, including its documentation for LiveStreams and LiveBroadcasts, if you need to identify the broadcast and stream resources in an API-managed workflow.

Replace a sold listing in a local FFmpeg concat list
- Identify the active clip. Check encoder logs or your operator dashboard to determine whether the sold property’s video is currently playing. Consider whether restarting the encoder will interrupt viewers.
- Make a backup and edit the source list. Save a copy of the current list, remove the sold property’s entry, and preserve the intended order of the remaining files. Keep the list syntax consistent with the concat demuxer format used by your FFmpeg command. The FFmpeg FAQ describes concat approaches; the concat demuxer documentation covers its list format and options.
- Check paths and file access. Confirm that every remaining entry points to a file that exists and can be opened. The concat demuxer’s default is
safe=1, which rejects unsafe paths and directives. Prefer relative, portable paths in a trusted working directory where they fit your setup; do not disable the safety check casually. - Apply the revised list deterministically. If the application running FFmpeg has no reload mechanism documented and verified for your setup, restart the FFmpeg input or process so it opens the revised list. Preserve the existing YouTube broadcast configuration where your ingest method allows it. A list-file edit alone is not evidence that the open concat input will reread the file.
- Verify playback and ingest. Watch the encoder logs or dashboard to confirm FFmpeg opens the intended next clip. Then check that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. Keep the removed file available for rollback until the replacement is confirmed.
- Test before using the procedure on a live rotation. Try the same update with a non-sale clip first. Check the documentation for your installed FFmpeg version as well: online FFmpeg documentation tracks the newest revision, which may differ from your build.
This procedure makes the source-list change predictable, but uninterrupted playback cannot be promised without knowing your FFmpeg command, ingest protocol, process manager, and whether restarting causes a viewer-visible gap.

If your workflow uses YouTube HLS ingestion
Do not apply local concat-list instructions to an HLS media playlist. For HLS, follow YouTube’s guide to delivering live YouTube content via HLS for constructing media-playlist and segment URLs. It specifies that filenames in the file= value are limited to alphanumeric characters, underscores, forward slashes, hyphens, and periods, and says not to URL-encode the filename.
HLS also has live-playlist rules that do not govern a local FFmpeg concat input list. Under RFC 8216, when media segments are removed from a live HLS playlist, the playlist must contain EXT-X-MEDIA-SEQUENCE; the sequence value must increase for each removed segment, and segments must be removed in their displayed order.

Troubleshoot a replacement that does not take effect
- The sold clip keeps playing after you edit the list: The running concat input may still be using the list it opened. Use a verified reload method for your application or restart the FFmpeg input/process with the updated list.
- FFmpeg rejects an entry or cannot open a file: Check that the path is correct, the file exists, the process can read it, and the entry follows the concat-list syntax. The default
safe=1rejects unsafe paths and directives; correct the list rather than disabling the check without a specific reason. - The wrong property plays next: Inspect the remaining entries and their order in the source list, then confirm in the FFmpeg log which file opened. Restore the backup if needed and revise the order before restarting again.
- The YouTube stream is interrupted or unhealthy after a restart: Check whether the encoder restarted with the intended input and whether the existing broadcast configuration was preserved. The impact depends on the command, ingest method, and process manager; a continuous transition is not guaranteed.
- You are unsure whether to edit a local list or HLS playlist: Inspect the actual FFmpeg command and ingest method. A local concat input is a source list; HLS uses a media playlist and segments with separate URL and sequencing rules.
