Do not open a Joy-Con 2 until you have identified its exact model. Nintendo says its Joy-Con 2 battery should not be replaced by the owner and must be replaced by a qualified professional. Nintendo nevertheless publishes a battery procedure for one specific left-controller revision, BEE-012(-01), using battery BEE-004(-01L). That procedure does not automatically apply to every Joy-Con 2.
If your controller is damaged, swollen, leaking, the model marking is unclear, or you cannot obtain the exact side-matched battery, stop and contact Nintendo support or a qualified repair professional. Lithium-ion cells can burn, vent, or short when mishandled.

First identify the controller, revision and battery
“Nintendo Switch 2 controller” can mean either Joy-Con 2 side, and each side can have more than one hardware revision. The model number is more important than the controller’s color or the fact that it fits a Switch 2 console.

| Controller | Revision identified by Nintendo | Specified replacement battery | What the documentation establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Joy-Con 2 (L) | BEE-012(-01) | BEE-004(-01L) | Nintendo says this revision has a user-replaceable battery and publishes a detailed procedure. |
| Joy-Con 2 (L) | BEE-012 without “-01” | Not stated | Nintendo says this revision does not have a user-replaceable battery. Do not apply the BEE-012(-01) procedure. |
| Joy-Con 2 (R) | BEE-014(-01) | BEE-004(-01R) | Nintendo’s search result identifies this side and battery, but the detailed right-side page was not available here. Do not assume the left-side steps are identical. |
Read the model marking on the controller and check the current Nintendo instructions for your region before ordering anything. If the marking says BEE-012 rather than BEE-012(-01), treat it as the non-user-replaceable revision. If you have a right controller, verify BEE-014(-01) and BEE-004(-01R) against Nintendo’s current right-side instructions rather than substituting a left battery.

Use only a side-matched battery
Nintendo’s left procedure is specifically for BEE-004(-01L) in Joy-Con 2 (L) BEE-012(-01), with Nintendo Battery Replacement Kit BEE-004(-01L). The right-side search result names BEE-004(-01R) for BEE-014(-01). A battery that has the right connector shape but the wrong part number is not an acceptable substitute.
Nintendo says the left kit is planned for future availability from Nintendo Store. Availability, regional sales terms and stock can change, so verify those details before purchasing. No price or universal release date is established by the cited instructions. If the kit is unavailable in your region, do not treat an unbranded marketplace pack as equivalent; ask Nintendo which service route and part are approved for your unit.
Check the label before buying tools or parts
Take a clear photograph of the model marking and compare every character, including the “-01” suffix and the L or R designation on the battery. Keep the photograph, purchase receipt and replacement lot information together. This prevents a common mistake: ordering a BEE-004(-01L) pack for a right controller, or ordering a battery advertised for the original Switch because the listing uses the broad phrase “Joy-Con battery.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRead the safety warning before deciding to repair
Nintendo’s Joy-Con 2 leaflet gives the clearest owner-facing instruction: “The product contains a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Do not replace the batteries yourself. The batteries must be removed and replaced by a qualified professional.” Nintendo’s broader Switch 2 safety guidance likewise says: “Do not disassemble, attempt to repair, or deform the battery.” These warnings apply even though Nintendo also documents a procedure for the particular BEE-012(-01) left revision.
The practical meaning is conditional, not a blanket endorsement of do-it-yourself repair. If you are not trained to handle lithium-ion cells, use Nintendo support or a qualified professional. Do not open a controller with a swollen battery, heat damage, crushed housing, liquid intrusion, corrosion or a chemical smell. Do not continue if a screw will not turn normally or a cable, connector or battery wrapper is damaged.
If a battery is leaking
Do not touch leaked material with bare hands, do not power the controller and do not puncture or wipe the cell. Nintendo says that if battery leakage contacts skin, wash thoroughly with soap and water. If it enters the eyes, flush with water and seek help from a qualified health professional. Move away from fire and other ignition sources and arrange professional handling of the damaged device.

Never perform these actions
- Do not disassemble, bend, crush, pierce, burn or deform the battery.
- Do not short its terminals with a tool, wire, foil or loose screw.
- Do not connect a battery with the polarity, connector or part number unverified.
- Do not use a visibly swollen, dented, wet or leaking replacement cell.
- Do not leave loose metal objects or liquid inside the controller.
Tools and parts for the documented left-side procedure
For BEE-012(-01), Nintendo specifies a PH00 cross-head screwdriver for the four screws in the back housing. Use a precision driver that fits the screw head completely and keep firm downward pressure while turning. The size is Nintendo’s stated requirement, not a recommendation for a particular brand.
iFixit’s independent left Joy-Con 2 guide describes the screws as JIS and warns that a conventional Phillips driver can strip them. That is independent repair guidance, not a replacement for Nintendo’s instructions. If you follow that guide, use the driver type it specifies and stop if the head begins to cam out.
Use the exact BEE-004(-01L) battery or Nintendo’s matching replacement kit for the left BEE-012(-01). iFixit also notes that a replacement battery may need replacement adhesive or thin double-sided tape if adhesive is not supplied. Do not improvise with thick foam, ordinary liquid glue or material that can press on the cell or prevent the housing from closing.
Set up a clean, dry, well-lit work surface before opening the controller. Use a small tray with separate spaces for the four housing screws and three battery screws. Avoid working on carpet or beside loose metal objects. Have the replacement and its lot number visible before you disconnect the old cell, so the controller is not left open while you search for a part.
Nintendo’s published procedure for Joy-Con 2 (L) BEE-012(-01)
The following sequence is limited to the revision Nintendo identifies as user-replaceable. It is a transcription of the published left-side process, not a claim of hands-on testing. Work slowly, keep every screw accounted for and stop when the physical condition does not match the instructions.
- Confirm the model and part numbers. Proceed only when the controller is Joy-Con 2 (L) BEE-012(-01) and the replacement is BEE-004(-01L) or the matching Nintendo kit. Do not use these steps for BEE-012 without “-01,” for the right side or for an older Joy-Con.
- Remove the four back-housing screws. Use the PH00 cross-head screwdriver Nintendo specifies. Keep the screws separate from the three battery screws removed later; they are not interchangeable by assumption.
- Open the housing slowly. Lift the housing carefully rather than pulling it apart. Nintendo instructs you not to disconnect the cables at the bottom of the housing. Keep those cables attached and orient the opened controller with the open side facing up.
- Disconnect only the battery cable. Locate the connector closest to the battery and disconnect the battery cables from that connector. Do not unplug the other cables merely to make the interior easier to reach.
- Remove the three battery-retaining screws. Nintendo specifically says to remove the three screws securing the battery and no others. Put them in a marked container so they cannot be confused with the four housing screws.
- Lift out the old battery. Release it without bending, puncturing or prying against the cell. If it is swollen, stuck, leaking or physically damaged, stop and have the controller handled professionally instead of forcing it out.
- Install the replacement battery without connecting its cable yet. Seat the BEE-004(-01L) in the correct position and reinstall the three battery screws. The cable remains disconnected at this stage because Nintendo specifies reconnection during assembly.
- Reconnect the battery at the assembly stage. Reconnect the battery cable when the housing is ready to be assembled, following Nintendo’s sequence. Do not substitute another connector or leave the battery connected while you are still removing or installing the retaining screws.
- Record the new battery’s lot number. Nintendo’s procedure includes recording the replacement battery lot number. Keep that record with the controller’s repair information in case support later asks which cell was installed.
- Inspect before closing. Confirm that the housing cable is attached, no loose objects or liquid remain inside, and no cable is trapped between the housing sections. A pinched cable can be damaged when the screws are tightened.
- Close and secure the housing. Align the housing without forcing it, then reinstall the four back-housing screws. Tighten them evenly and only until secure; excessive force can damage the plastic or strip the heads.
- Check the finished controller. Nintendo says to check for rattling and verify normal button presses. A rattle, uneven housing seam, sticky button or unusual resistance is a reason to reopen only if you can do so safely; otherwise disconnect the controller from use and seek professional help.
Why the order matters
Leaving the lower-housing cables connected avoids unnecessary strain on delicate wiring. Disconnecting only the battery connector limits the number of parts disturbed, while keeping the replacement cable disconnected until assembly reduces the chance of pulling on it while the battery is being secured. Separating the screw groups also helps prevent a housing screw from being placed in a battery mount or vice versa.

Why the left instructions must not be copied to the right controller
Nintendo’s right-side search result identifies Joy-Con 2 (R) BEE-014(-01), battery BEE-004(-01R) and a matching kit. The detailed right-side procedure was not available in the cited material, so the left controller’s screw sequence, connector location and assembly order cannot be presented as confirmed right-side instructions.
Do not infer that the right controller is user-replaceable merely because a replacement part is named. First verify the exact BEE-014(-01) revision and read Nintendo’s current regional procedure. If that procedure is unavailable, contact Nintendo support or use a qualified professional rather than experimenting with the left-side instructions.
Independent repair guidance: useful distinctions
iFixit’s left Joy-Con 2 guide, updated August 4, 2025, is an independent alternative reference. It warns that the screws are JIS and that using a non-JIS Phillips driver risks stripping them. It also says replacement adhesive or thin double-sided tape may be required when the new battery does not include adhesive.
Recommended Free Tools
Those points help explain why a correctly sized driver and proper battery retention matter, but they do not override Nintendo’s qualified-professional warning or expand the procedure to other revisions. Treat the guide as applicable only to a matching left Joy-Con 2 and verify every part number before opening the controller.
Do not confuse Joy-Con 2 batteries with older HAC-006 cells
Older Nintendo Switch accessories use a different battery designation. iFixit’s HAC-006 listing identifies compatibility with the original Joy-Con, Switch HAC-001 and HAC-001(-01), and Switch OLED HEG-001. It does not list Joy-Con 2.
| Battery designation | Products identified in the cited compatibility information | Use in Joy-Con 2? |
|---|---|---|
| HAC-006 | Original Joy-Con, Switch HAC-001/HAC-001(-01), Switch OLED HEG-001 | Not identified as compatible; do not use it for this repair. |
| BEE-004(-01L) | Joy-Con 2 (L) BEE-012(-01) | Specified by Nintendo for the documented left-side procedure. |
| BEE-004(-01R) | Joy-Con 2 (R) BEE-014(-01) | Identified by Nintendo’s right-side search result; follow the complete right-side instructions before attempting replacement. |
Physical fit is not proof of electrical or mechanical compatibility. Do not select a cell because an online listing calls it a “Switch controller battery” or because it resembles the old HAC-006 pack.

Cost, availability and service choices
The published Nintendo instructions do not establish a battery-kit price, a universal release date or a standard professional-service fee. The left page says the BEE-004(-01L) kit is planned for future Nintendo Store availability, so check the current store and regional support pages rather than relying on an old listing. A professional quote may include inspection, labor and shipping, but the amount depends on region and service program.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Checks after reassembly
Before returning the controller to regular use, perform the checks Nintendo includes in its procedure:
- Listen and feel for any rattling when the controller is gently handled.
- Check that the housing closes evenly and that no seam is forced open by the battery.
- Press the buttons normally and confirm that none is sticky, unusually hard or recessed.
- Make sure no cable is visible in a place where the housing can pinch it.
- Confirm that no liquid, screw, adhesive fragment or other loose object remains inside.
If any check fails, do not keep charging or using the controller to “see whether it settles.” Power it down when safe and ask Nintendo support or a qualified professional to inspect it. A rattling screw, trapped cable or damaged cell can worsen during charging or play.
When professional service is the safer answer
Choose professional service instead of DIY when the controller is BEE-012 without “-01,” when the right-side procedure cannot be verified, when the battery is swollen or leaking, when the screws are stripped, or when you lack a driver that fits correctly. Professional service is also the appropriate route if you cannot identify the battery lot number, connector or model marking with confidence.
Nintendo’s own leaflet makes professional replacement the default safety instruction. The existence of a published procedure for BEE-012(-01) explains which revision can accept the specified kit; it does not remove the hazards of opening a lithium-ion device or make every Joy-Con 2 suitable for owner repair.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I replace a Joy-Con 2 battery myself?
Nintendo’s Joy-Con 2 leaflet says not to replace the battery yourself and says a qualified professional must do it. Nintendo also documents a specific procedure for left Joy-Con 2 revision BEE-012(-01). Treat that procedure as limited to the identified revision, and use Nintendo support or qualified service if you are unsure.
Which battery fits the left Joy-Con 2?
For Joy-Con 2 (L) model BEE-012(-01), Nintendo specifies BEE-004(-01L) and its matching replacement kit. Do not substitute HAC-006 or a generic pack. A left controller marked BEE-012 without “-01” is not identified as user-replaceable.
Which battery fits the right Joy-Con 2?
Nintendo’s right-side search result identifies BEE-014(-01) and battery BEE-004(-01R). Verify the complete current right-side procedure before opening it; do not copy the left-side screw and connector sequence.

Nintendo’s documented left-side procedure specifies a PH00 cross-head screwdriver for the four back-housing screws. iFixit separately describes the screws as JIS and warns that an unsuitable Phillips driver can strip them.
Can I use an older HAC-006 Joy-Con battery?
No. HAC-006 listings identify original Joy-Con, Switch HAC-001/HAC-001(-01) and Switch OLED HEG-001 compatibility, not Joy-Con 2. Use only the side- and revision-matched BEE battery identified for your controller.
What should I do if the battery is swollen or leaking?
Do not open, puncture, charge or use the controller. Avoid contact with leaked material. If it reaches skin, wash thoroughly with soap and water; if it reaches the eyes, flush with water and seek a qualified health professional. Arrange Nintendo or qualified professional service.
How much does a replacement kit cost?
The cited Nintendo instructions do not establish a price or universal release date. Nintendo says the left BEE-004(-01L) kit is planned for future Nintendo Store availability, so check current regional stock and service terms.
The Bottom Line
Identify the exact side and revision first. Only the documented left BEE-012(-01) procedure uses BEE-004(-01L); the right side requires its own verified instructions and BEE-004(-01R). Nintendo’s default advice is qualified-professional replacement, especially for damaged batteries or uncertain models. Never substitute HAC-006 or a generic cell.
