If your fantasy league starts individual defensive players (IDP), check for a healthy, linebacker-eligible player on your bench first. Compare that player’s role and scoring potential under your league’s rules, then put him in before his game locks. If no suitable bench option is available, compare eligible free agents or waiver options. Check the latest injury and inactive information near kickoff; use an IR slot only if your platform and league settings allow it.
First, confirm that your lineup has an IDP linebacker slot
This advice applies to leagues that start individual defensive players and require a linebacker in the injured player’s slot. Lineups vary: some leagues use an LB-only position, while others allow a broader defensive-player slot. Scoring systems also differ, so a player’s name or general reputation is not enough to identify the best replacement.

Check your league’s roster settings and scoring rules before comparing candidates. NFL.com describes a common IDP setup with a defensive lineman, linebacker and defensive back, while noting that lineup requirements and scoring vary by league. NFL Fantasy custom leagues can add individual positions such as LB, and commissioners can set the roster-lock type.
Check status and lineup lock close to kickoff
Review your fantasy platform’s latest player status and the NFL team’s official inactive announcement. NFL teams designate inactives about 90 minutes before kickoff, according to NFL Fantasy support. ESPN says its fantasy injury tags are based on the NFL’s official injury and inactive list. An injury designation alone does not guarantee whether a player will be available, so check again near game time.

Make the change before the replacement’s own game starts if your league locks players individually. NFL Fantasy’s published 2025 rules allow lineup changes before a player’s team is scheduled to start; other platforms and league settings may use a different deadline. Check the rule shown in your league rather than assuming every roster locks at the same time.
Choose a replacement using your league’s rules
- Check the bench. Look first for a healthy player who is eligible for the injured player’s slot.
- Compare the role and scoring opportunity. Use your league’s scoring settings and the player’s expected defensive role to judge whether he fits. IDP scoring and roster needs vary, so there is no universally correct replacement based on position alone.
- Check free agents or waivers if needed. If no suitable bench player is available, compare eligible players in your league’s player pool. Follow your league’s waiver rules if a claim is required.
- Confirm timing, then set the lineup. Make sure the replacement is available and that his game has not passed your league’s lock deadline.
A specific player recommendation depends on your platform, scoring and roster settings, the injured player, the current week and the players available in your league. Without those details, choosing a name would be guesswork.

Use an IR slot only when your platform allows it
An injured player may qualify for an IR slot, potentially freeing a roster spot, but eligibility and roster consequences depend on the platform and league settings. On ESPN Fantasy Football, the help guidance says a player can occupy an IR slot with an OUT or IR designation if the league has that feature. If a player in IR changes from OUT to having no injury designation, the roster becomes invalid.

If that player becomes healthy, you may need to adjust the roster, and the issue can affect new waiver claims. For another platform, check its own IR and waiver rules before moving the player.

Consider an automatic inactive swap
NFL.com Fantasy offers an Auto-Swap Inactives setting. According to its support guidance, the feature benches players projected to score zero and starts the highest-ranked player on the manager’s configured Backups list. It can help with late inactives on that platform, but check that it is available and enabled in your league. Do not assume an automatic swap is active unless you have confirmed the setting.
