To replace an AirTag battery, open the stainless-steel cover, install a compatible CR2032 lithium 3V coin cell with the positive side up, and lock the cover again. An unwanted-tracking alert is different: it concerns an unknown AirTag or compatible tracker moving with you, so replacing the battery in your own AirTag will not clear it. You must locate, identify, and disable the unknown device.
What the two problems have in common—and what they do not
An AirTag uses a replaceable CR2032 lithium 3V coin-cell battery. When the battery in an AirTag you own is low, your iPhone can notify you, and the Find My app can show “Low Battery” for that item.

An unwanted-tracking alert is a safety notification. Apple says it can appear when an AirTag, AirPods, a Find My network accessory, or another compatible Bluetooth location-tracking device has been separated from its owner and is detected moving with you over time. The alert is about the unknown device, not the battery level of an AirTag registered to you.

The distinction is central: battery maintenance restores an AirTag’s power, while an unwanted-tracking response removes or disables a tracker that may be following your movements.

Choose the right replacement battery
Specification
Buy a CR2032 lithium 3V coin-cell battery. Check the package before opening it. Apple warns that some CR2032 cells with bitterant coatings might not work with AirTag or other battery-powered products. Select packaging that states the cell is compatible with Apple AirTag when that information is provided.
Do not substitute a different coin-cell designation or voltage. If an apparently new cell does not work, the battery’s coating compatibility is one of the first things to verify.
Safety around coin cells
Apple warns that an AirTag, its cover, and its battery can pose a choking or other injury hazard to small children. Keep both new and used batteries away from children. Dispose of the removed cell according to local battery-disposal rules rather than leaving it loose in household waste or within reach.

How to replace an AirTag battery
The procedure below follows Apple’s published instructions in “How to replace the battery in your AirTag”. You do not need to alter the AirTag in Find My before opening it.
- Prepare a compatible cell. Have a CR2032 lithium 3V battery ready, and keep the old battery away from children while you work.
- Orient the AirTag. Hold it with the polished stainless-steel side and battery cover facing upward.
- Press the cover down. Apply firm downward pressure to the stainless-steel cover so it stays engaged with the internal tabs.
- Rotate counterclockwise. While maintaining pressure, turn the cover counterclockwise until it releases.
- Remove the cover and old cell. Lift off the cover and take out the depleted battery. Set the used cell aside for proper local disposal.
- Insert the new battery. Place the CR2032 in the battery compartment with its positive (+) side facing up.
- Refit the cover. Align the cover’s three tabs with the three slots in the AirTag.
- Lock it. Press the cover down and rotate it clockwise until it stops.
- Listen for confirmation. A sound indicates that the replacement battery is connected. If there is no sound, troubleshoot the cell and cover alignment before assuming the AirTag is defective.
If the cover will not open
- Make sure the stainless-steel side is facing up and that you are pressing the cover down while turning it counterclockwise.
- Turn the cover only after the downward pressure is established; the tabs must disengage from the slots.
- Do not pry the cover with a sharp object. The specified method is pressure followed by counterclockwise rotation.
If the AirTag does not chime after replacement
- Open the cover again and confirm that the CR2032’s positive (+) side is facing up.
- Check that the cell is seated flat and that the cover’s three tabs are aligned with all three slots.
- Verify that the package identifies the CR2032 as compatible with AirTag; bitterant-coated cells may not work.
- Close the cover by pressing down and rotating clockwise until it stops, then listen again for the connection sound.
- On iPhone, open Find My and check the AirTag in the Items tab. A low-battery message should no longer be expected once the replacement is recognized; if the item still appears unavailable, repeat the physical checks before replacing another part.
How to respond to an unwanted-tracking alert on iPhone or iPad
Follow Apple’s safety guidance in “What to do if you receive an alert that an AirTag, set of AirPods, Find My network accessory or compatible Bluetooth location-tracking device is with you”. The alert does not identify the device as yours; it indicates that an unknown tracker has been seen moving with you over time.
1. Open the alert and continue
- Tap the unwanted-tracking notification.
- Choose Continue to open the available safety actions.
- Read the device information shown on screen before taking action. An alert may refer to an AirTag, AirPods, a Find My network accessory, or another compatible Bluetooth tracker.
2. Make the tracker play a sound
Choose Play Sound. Follow the sound through the places where you have been, including clothing, bags, a vehicle, and other belongings. A tracker can be concealed in an item you carried or in a vehicle, so check methodically rather than only searching the room where the alert first appeared.

3. Use Find Nearby when it is offered
On supported iPhones, Find Nearby can provide distance and direction for an unknown AirTag. Move slowly and follow the changing guidance. If the sound is hard to hear or the device is not immediately visible, use the distance and direction information to narrow the search.

4. Search beyond the first obvious locations
- Check every bag, pocket, coat, and item you carried.
- Inspect the interior and exterior of your vehicle.
- Look in belongings that were with you during the period covered by the alert.
- If sound and Find Nearby do not locate the device, continue a physical search of the relevant items instead of assuming the notification was caused by the AirTag whose battery you just changed.
5. Identify the device
After locating it, use the on-screen Find My instructions. Where available, hold an NFC-capable phone near the tracker to obtain identification information. Identification can help distinguish a misplaced tracker from one that you do not recognize and gives you the information needed for the next step.
6. Disable the unknown tracker
Follow the instructions displayed by Find My to disable the device. Disabling the unknown tracker is what addresses the unwanted-tracking alert. Replacing a battery in an AirTag registered to your account does not perform this action and cannot turn off an alert caused by another tracker.

What Android users can do
Automatic notifications and manual scans
Android 6.0 and later can automatically notify users about a compatible tracker detected moving with them. Android users can also run a manual scan when they want to check nearby trackers rather than waiting for an automatic notification.
Use Apple’s Tracker Detect app
Apple’s Tracker Detect app can scan for compatible Find My network trackers and play a sound when one is detected nearby. Use the scan and sound options to locate the physical device, then follow the identification and disabling instructions shown for that tracker.

A scan is a locating aid, not a battery-replacement workflow. If you are maintaining your own AirTag, use the CR2032 procedure above. If an unknown tracker is involved, keep the two tasks separate: scan and locate the unknown device, identify it, and disable it.

Will replacing the battery stop the alert?
No. Replacing the battery in your own AirTag is maintenance and does not clear an alert generated by an unknown tracker. The alert is based on the unknown device being separated from its owner and detected moving with you over time. A battery change in a different AirTag has no effect on that detection.
If you physically find the tracker that triggered the notification and remove its battery, that may stop that device from transmitting, but Apple’s supported response is to use the displayed steps to identify and disable it. Do not assume that changing a battery in any tracker is sufficient until the on-screen disabling process has been completed.
When the tracker cannot be found
Repeat the search logically
Use Play Sound again when available, retry Find Nearby on a supported iPhone, and search the clothing, bags, vehicle, and other belongings that traveled with you. Sound may be obscured by upholstery, a full bag, or other objects, so check compartments and seams rather than only exposed surfaces.

Prioritize personal safety
If you cannot find the tracker and you may be at risk, go to a safe public location and contact law enforcement. Do not confront a person you suspect may have placed the tracker. Preserve the notification and any identification information shown on your phone if authorities ask for details.
