There is no guaranteed one-for-one replacement for every Reddit Data API feature. For a Reddit-native extension, evaluate Devvit first, then map each user-visible behavior to a supported capability, identify gaps, and confirm that your access and use—including any commercial use—are authorized. Reddit’s migration guide is the practical starting point; keep Data API functionality only where Reddit currently permits it.
Start with the behavior your app must preserve
Do not begin by translating endpoint calls one at a time. Inventory what people actually use, then record the data and permissions each behavior needs. A feed reader, a scheduled posting tool, and a moderation bot may all use Reddit data, but they have different read, write, event, and community-scope requirements.
- Reads and display: Which posts, comments, or other data do users need to see, and in what context?
- Writes and moderation: Does the app submit posts or comments, or perform moderation actions? Record the exact action and the communities where it runs.
- Automation: Note event-driven behavior, periodic jobs, streams, and any latency or scheduling expectations.
- Architecture: List external services, existing backends, incoming webhooks, storage needs, and data retention.
- Approval and business use: Record who operates the app, how it is funded or monetized, and the use case you will declare to Reddit.
This inventory gives you a feature-by-feature migration plan and makes regressions visible before you port code.
Evaluate Devvit as the default Reddit-native path
Reddit describes its Developer Platform as the primary way to build Reddit extensions. Devvit offers building blocks including a UI toolkit, custom buttons, event triggers, realtime support, Redis storage, app hosting, and community-specific settings. The migration guide maps common PRAW patterns to Devvit, including project setup, API calls, streams and triggers, scheduled jobs, Redis, HTTP fetches, posts, comments, and moderation actions. Consult the current migration documentation for the capabilities and configuration details that apply to your app; the platform and docs can change.

That mapping is a starting point, not proof that every Data API behavior has an equivalent. Reddit identifies possible gaps including cross-subreddit communication, existing backends, incoming webhooks, and structured databases. For each one, decide whether to redesign the feature around Devvit, request an available migration exemption or allowlist, or retain a separate component only if its access and use are independently authorized.
Choose a route for each feature
| Feature need | Route to evaluate | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Reddit-native interface, community interactions, triggers, scheduled jobs, or supported moderation actions | Devvit | Confirm the exact capability and configuration in current Developer Platform documentation; feature parity is not guaranteed. |
| Existing Data API reads or writes not yet ported | Continue only with authorized Data API access | Use Reddit-authorized Access Info, including OAuth where required, and comply with the applicable terms and limits. |
| A page needs to show a selected Reddit post | Reddit Embeds | Embeds address post presentation; they do not authorize broader ingestion, browsing, posting, or moderation. |
| Backend, webhook, cross-community, or structured-storage dependency | Redesign, ask about available migration access, or retain an authorized external component | Reddit’s migration guidance recognizes these as potential gaps; it does not promise an exception or an equivalent platform feature. |
Reddit says reasonable use of its Embeds is not charged, but that is a narrow presentation option—not a general API replacement. Likewise, a migration exemption or allowlist is something to request where available, not an entitlement.

Check registration, access, and commercial permission
Before building around continued Data API access, check the app’s registration and the access details Reddit has authorized. Use credentials truthfully and follow the current documentation. Reddit says hosted-service IP addresses may trigger OAuth or login requirements. Its Developer Terms and Data API Terms reserve Reddit’s ability to set limits and require compliance with its terms; API access is not a promise of permanent availability.
Commercial use deserves a separate approval check. Reddit Help Center guidance says products or services using Reddit data for commercial purposes need Reddit’s permission and a contract. The Developer Terms restrict business or monetized use absent express permission or a separate agreement, and app review and the use case you describe determine eligibility. If your app supports a business, earns revenue, or feeds a commercial product, obtain the required permission before launch rather than assuming a non-commercial registration covers it. See Reddit’s Developer Platform & Accessing Reddit Data guidance.

Port incrementally and test the result
- Register or review the existing app: Use Reddit’s existing-app registration page and ensure the declared use case matches what the app actually does.
- Map one behavior at a time: Use the migration guide to identify the relevant Devvit pattern, required configuration, and any requested access.
- Resolve gaps before removing the old path: Decide whether to redesign, request available migration access, or keep an independently authorized external component.
- Test expected behavior: Verify reads, writes, permissions, event handling, scheduling, storage, and community scope against the app’s requirements. Test failures and user-visible regressions as well as the happy path.
- Recheck policy and program terms: Revisit the current Developer Platform, API, review, and migration-program documentation before committing to a release plan.
Reddit’s migration guide describes a Developer Platform App Migration Program with a total announced amount of $1,000,000 for 2026. That figure describes the program, not a guaranteed payment to an app; eligibility and terms must be checked on the live program page. The registration page’s displayed incentive date has been inconsistent with other surfaced Reddit program materials, so do not plan around a deadline or payout without confirming the active terms.

Scraping, disguising credentials, or relying on undocumented endpoints does not solve a feature gap legitimately. Reddit’s terms require authorized access and prohibit circumventing limits; they also restrict uses such as unauthorized model training. If neither Devvit nor an authorized Data API path supports a behavior, treat it as an unresolved product requirement and redesign or seek approval rather than attempting to bypass the restriction.
