The safe way to replace a rechargeable controller battery is not to follow a universal teardown video. First identify the controller’s exact model and revision, then confirm that its manufacturer permits user replacement and provides instructions for that revision. Buy the battery specified by its part number, use the tools and precautions in the official procedure, and stop if the battery is swollen, leaking, hot, deformed, or if any step is unclear.
Different controllers that look almost identical can use different batteries—or one revision can be user-serviceable while another is not. The examples below show why model identification and manufacturer guidance must come before opening the shell.

1. Identify the exact controller before buying anything
Find the model and revision printed on the controller, its battery compartment, the original packaging, or the manufacturer’s support page. Record the complete code, including suffixes such as “-01.” A product-family name such as “Joy-Con,” “Elite Series 2,” or “PS5 controller” is not precise enough to select a battery.
Where to look
- Inspect the rear label, regulatory marking, or small text near the charging port.
- Check the console’s accessory information or the controller’s registered device details.
- Compare the code with the manufacturer’s battery-replacement or service page, not just a retailer listing.
- Photograph the label before opening the controller so the model number remains available during the repair.
Write down the full model code exactly as printed. Nintendo’s instructions distinguish Joy-Con model HAC-016(-01) from HAC-016, even though both are commonly described as a Joy-Con (R). That distinction changes whether a user replacement is permitted.

2. Confirm that the battery is user-replaceable
Do not assume that a removable-looking cover, a screw, or an online replacement battery means the controller is intended for DIY service. The manufacturer’s guidance for the exact revision controls the decision.

If the manufacturer does not describe your revision as user-replaceable, the safest option is manufacturer support or a qualified repair service. A battery sold online can still be the wrong electrical, physical, or connector specification.
3. Do not start if the battery or controller is unsafe
Rechargeable lithium-ion cells can release energy rapidly when punctured, shorted, overheated, crushed, or installed incorrectly. Before opening the controller, inspect it without squeezing or flexing the housing.

- Leaking fluid, a chemical odor, smoke, unusual heat, or discoloration.
- A bent, crushed, punctured, or corroded battery or connector.
- Liquid inside the controller, burnt wiring, or evidence of a short circuit.
- A battery that becomes hot while idle or charging.
Do not charge, puncture, press flat, tape over a damaged cell, or attempt to “test” it by reconnecting it. Move away from heat and follow your local hazardous-battery guidance. Contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider.
Microsoft’s Xbox Elite Series 2 guide says to power off and disconnect the device, fully discharge its rechargeable lithium-ion battery before repair, use genuine compatible parts, and stop if damage is found. Those instructions apply to the repairs in that guide; they are not a universal command to open every controller. Microsoft states: “If at any point you are unsure or uncomfortable about performing the repairs, as detailed in this Guide, DO NOT proceed. Contact Microsoft Support for additional support options.”
4. Prepare a controlled, model-specific work area
Use the exact tools named in the manufacturer’s procedure. Avoid improvising with metal picks, oversized screwdrivers, knives, or household adhesives. A slipping tool can damage a cable, puncture a cell, or bridge contacts.

5. A safe workflow that does not replace the official procedure
The following sequence is a decision and safety framework, not a universal teardown. Screw locations, cable connectors, adhesive, antenna routing, and battery placement differ by model.
- Back up settings and pairings if the controller or console offers that option. A battery repair should not be used as an opportunity to change firmware or unrelated components.
- Confirm the code and battery part number one more time. The part number on the cell, connector, and manufacturer’s instructions must agree with the controller revision.
- Shut down and disconnect. Turn the controller off, unplug it, and remove it from a charging dock or console. Follow any model-specific discharge instruction; Microsoft’s cited guide calls for a fully discharged rechargeable lithium-ion battery before its repair.
- Read the entire official procedure before removing a screw. Note warnings about cables that must remain connected, screws that must not be removed, adhesive, connector orientation, and reassembly order.
- Open only as far as the guide directs. Apply steady, minimal force. If the shell will not separate, stop and check for a hidden screw, clip, cable, or adhesive rather than prying harder.
- Keep the battery electrically isolated as instructed. Do not use metal tools across contacts. Some procedures require the battery to stay connected until a particular step; others require early disconnection. Follow the exact guide.
- Remove the old cell without bending, crushing, puncturing, or pulling on its wires. If adhesive holds it down, use only the method and tool specified for that model.
- Install the exact replacement in the original orientation. Route cables and antennas exactly as shown, keep wires away from screw posts and moving controls, and make sure the connector is fully seated without force.
- Reassemble in the documented order. Replace every screw in its original location and do not substitute a longer screw. A wrong screw can damage a circuit board or cell.
- Perform the guide’s final inspection before charging. Check for loose parts, trapped cables, liquid, pinched insulation, and a properly closed housing. Then carry out the manufacturer’s functional checks.
6. Nintendo Joy-Con 2 (L): BEE-012(-01) and BEE-004(-01L)
Nintendo’s UK procedure applies specifically to controller BEE-012(-01) and battery BEE-004(-01L). Do not transfer it to another Joy-Con or another revision.
Important instructions from Nintendo’s procedure
- Use the supplied PH00 Phillips screwdriver, plastic tweezers, and plastic spudger.
- Work in a dry place on a non-metallic surface and avoid excessive force.
- Do not disconnect the back-housing cables during the operation.
- Do not remove unrelated screws.
- Do not reconnect the battery until assembly is complete, as directed by Nintendo.
- Record the new battery’s lot number before closing the housing.
- Before closing, inspect the inside for loose items and liquid.

7. Original Joy-Con (R): HAC-016(-01) versus HAC-016
Nintendo’s original Joy-Con (R) instructions cover HAC-016(-01), which uses user-replaceable battery HAC-006(-01). The battery is held by double-sided tape, and the procedure includes model-specific cable routing, connector orientation, and antenna checks.
Nintendo separately states that HAC-016 does not have a user-replaceable battery. A battery listing that says only “Joy-Con (R)” is therefore insufficient. Match the complete code before ordering, and do not use the HAC-016(-01) steps on HAC-016.

8. Xbox Elite Series 2: follow Microsoft’s repair boundaries
Microsoft’s Xbox Elite Series 2 Controller Safety & Repair Instructions begins with safety and preparation requirements. Read the whole guide, power off and disconnect the controller, and fully discharge the rechargeable lithium-ion battery before beginning the repairs described there.
Microsoft warns that incompatible, reused, or modified batteries and improper handling can create serious hazards. Use genuine compatible parts. Stop if the battery is damaged or if the work exceeds your comfort or ability. Do not borrow a screw sequence or connector method from a different Xbox controller, revision, or video.
9. PlayStation controllers: do not infer permission to disassemble
Sony’s PS5 Safety Guide identifies the controller as containing a lithium-ion rechargeable battery and instructs users not to disassemble or modify the product or accessories. For a PlayStation controller, start with the current model-specific service information rather than a generic battery tutorial.
If built-in battery fluid leaks, Sony says: “If the built-in battery fluid leaks, stop using the product immediately and contact the appropriate PlayStation customer service helpline which can be found within the accompanying documentation.” The guidance is in Sony’s PS5 Safety Guide. Do not continue charging or opening a controller showing leakage or other damage.
10. Choosing the replacement battery and tools
Match all of the following, not just the advertised capacity or connector shape:

Before applying power, inspect the controller in bright light. The shell should close without force, no cable should be trapped under a screw post, and no loose screw or tool should remain inside. On the Joy-Con 2 (L), Nintendo specifically says to check for loose items and liquid and to reconnect the battery only at the end of assembly.
- Confirm that every connector is fully seated and oriented as shown in the official guide.
- Check that buttons, triggers, sticks, and moving parts are not rubbing against a cable or the battery.
- Power on without immediately leaving the controller unattended on charge.
- Pair it with the console or device and test inputs, vibration or motion features supported by that model, and charging recognition.
- If the controller becomes hot, smells unusual, swells, disconnects repeatedly, or behaves erratically, power it off and disconnect it. Do not keep charging while troubleshooting a possible battery fault.
12. Battery disposal
Never put a removed lithium-ion battery in household waste, commercial garbage, or ordinary recycling bins. Collection rules vary, so contact your local battery-recycling or hazardous-waste provider and follow its packaging and transport requirements.
Nintendo instructs users not to remove the battery label or disassemble the battery, to cover the connector with tape, and not to place batteries in household waste. Microsoft likewise directs readers to local rules and handling instructions for used lithium-ion batteries. A damaged or leaking battery needs the collector’s specific instructions; do not treat it as an ordinary used cell.
13. Troubleshooting by symptom
The replacement does not fit
Stop. Recheck the complete controller code and battery part number. Do not trim the cell, bend tabs, force a connector, or compress the battery to make it fit.

The connector will not seat
Check orientation and alignment against the official diagram. If resistance remains, disconnect power and stop; forcing a small connector can tear its socket or short contacts.

The controller will not power on
Do not repeatedly reconnect the battery or leave it charging unattended. Re-read the model-specific final-assembly steps, verify that no cable was omitted or pinched, and use manufacturer support if the fault is not immediately clear.
The shell will not close
Look for a trapped cable, misplaced screw, loose component, or battery that is not seated as specified. Never tighten screws to pull a misaligned shell together.
The battery is hot, swollen, leaking, or smells abnormal
