To replace a desktop Wi‑Fi card, first identify the existing adapter and an open, compatible PCIe slot. Download the correct driver before removing the old hardware, shut the computer down and unplug it, install and secure the new card, attach its antennas and (when required) its internal USB cable, then install the manufacturer’s driver and verify the adapter in Device Manager.
Check whether the desktop already has Wi‑Fi
Do not assume a desktop lacks wireless networking just because you cannot see an antenna on the outside. Some systems include a wireless adapter, while others have no wireless hardware or have an adapter that is disabled or missing its driver.

- In Windows, right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Look for an entry whose name identifies a wireless adapter, Wi‑Fi function, or the adapter’s hardware vendor.
- Open the entry’s Properties if you need to check its status, driver provider, or driver version.
If no wireless device appears, expand Other devices and look for an unknown network controller. That often means the hardware is present but Windows lacks a suitable driver. Microsoft’s guidance summarizes the requirement plainly: “To connect your portable or desktop device to your wireless network, it must have a wireless network adapter.”
For a custom-built PC, record the motherboard model and inspect its manual for PCIe slot locations and internal USB headers. For a prebuilt computer, identify the exact model and use the manufacturer’s support page as well as the card maker’s documentation; system vendors sometimes customize drivers for their machines.

Choose a compatible replacement card
The product category you need is a desktop PCIe Wi‑Fi adapter card. Compatibility is more than matching a wireless standard. Check each item below before ordering.
| Check | What to confirm | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Motherboard slot | An open PCIe slot of the type specified by the card manual. Some documented models use PCI Express x1; other cards may specify a different compatible slot. | A card cannot be installed in a slot that the motherboard or card does not support. |
| Case opening and bracket | Whether the supplied full-height or low-profile bracket matches the chassis. A low-profile bracket may be required in a slim case, and some cards provide a replacement bracket. | The electrical slot can be suitable while the metal bracket still fails to fit the case. |
| Clearance | Space around the slot, especially beside a graphics card or another expansion card, and room for the card’s connectors. | Adjacent hardware can block insertion or restrict airflow and antenna connections. |
| Operating-system support | The exact Windows edition and version listed for the adapter, plus a current driver package. | A card may function on one supported Windows release but lack a package for another. |
| Wireless features | Wireless capability that matches your router and your needs. Use the adapter maker’s current specification and support table rather than assuming every card offers the same features. | There is no universal speed or feature level across PCIe adapters. |
| Bluetooth | Whether Bluetooth is included and whether it requires a cable to a motherboard USB header. | On combo cards, Wi‑Fi can use PCIe while Bluetooth depends on a separate internal USB connection. |
| Antenna hardware | Whether the card includes screw-on antennas, an antenna base, or another external assembly, and where that hardware can be positioned. | The card may be installed correctly yet have poor reception if its antenna hardware is omitted or obstructed. |
Match the slot and bracket to the exact model
Read both the motherboard manual and the adapter manual. A documented adapter may list PCI Express x1, while another may permit any compatible PCIe slot; those statements apply to the named models, not to every card sold under the same product category. Compare the bracket with the case opening before you remove the old card. If the supplied bracket is full height and your chassis is slim, verify that the manufacturer supplies a low-profile alternative.
Check drivers before buying
Find the exact adapter model’s support page and confirm a driver for your Windows version. On a prebuilt desktop, check the computer maker first because its package may include system-specific configuration. Intel likewise advises considering the computer maker’s driver when an Intel wireless device is installed in an OEM system. Do not download a package merely because its name contains a similar chipset number.

Decide whether you need Bluetooth
Some PCIe cards combine Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth. The Bluetooth radio may require the included cable to a motherboard USB header, often identified in the adapter instructions as an F_USB connection. If your motherboard has no suitable header, or if you do not connect the cable, the Wi‑Fi portion can work while Bluetooth remains unavailable. This is a model-specific requirement, so follow the card’s wiring diagram rather than assuming every Wi‑Fi card needs a cable.
Download the driver and prepare the computer
Download the correct driver package before removing the old card. Save the installer to the desktop or a USB drive so the computer can be configured even if it has no network connection after the swap. Use the desktop manufacturer’s support page for system-specific hardware, or the wireless-card or chipset vendor’s official download page when that is the appropriate source. Avoid driver-collection sites and packages that do not identify the exact adapter.
Have the adapter, its antennas or antenna base, the correct bracket if supplied, and any required USB-header cable ready. Read the computer and adapter manuals for the panel-release method, slot location, and connection layout.

Shut down Windows completely. Turn off the power supply if the computer has a rear switch, remove the power cord, and then open the case according to the system manual. ASUS’s installation guidance states: “Before installation, please turn off your PC, unplug the power cord, and remove side panel of the chassis.” Do not work inside a powered or merely sleeping computer.
Remove the old card and install the replacement
- Locate the existing adapter. Follow its antenna leads to the expansion card. If the desktop uses a separate external antenna assembly, identify how it is attached before disconnecting anything.
- Disconnect the antenna hardware. Unscrew external antennas or carefully detach antenna leads as the card manual shows. Do not pull a coaxial connector by its cable.
- Remove the retaining screw or latch. Expansion cards are commonly held by a case screw, but some chassis use a retention bar or tool-free latch. Use the mechanism provided by the case.
- Withdraw the old card. Hold it by its edges, release the PCIe slot latch if the motherboard has one, and lift the card straight out. If it resists, stop and check the latch or retaining hardware instead of bending the board.
- Check the replacement slot. Confirm that the slot and the case opening match the adapter instructions and that nearby graphics cards or other cards leave enough clearance.
- Seat the new adapter. Align the card’s edge connector with the slot and press evenly until it is fully inserted and the slot latch engages where applicable. The metal bracket should sit flush with the case opening.
- Secure the bracket. Replace the case screw or close the chassis retention mechanism. A card that is not secured can move out of the slot when you attach antennas or close the panel.
- Attach the antennas. Screw on each antenna or connect the supplied antenna base exactly as shown in the card manual. When practical, position external antennas with a clear path toward the router and away from large metal obstructions.
- Connect Bluetooth hardware if required. If the card’s Bluetooth function uses an internal USB cable, plug it into the specified motherboard USB header with the keyed connector oriented correctly. Do not connect an unneeded cable to a random header.
- Close and restart. Refit the side panel, reconnect the power cord, switch the power supply back on if necessary, and start the computer.
Install or update the Windows driver
Let Windows try its built-in driver first
Windows may install an inbox driver automatically after the first startup. Wait for hardware detection to finish, then check Device Manager. An inbox driver can provide basic connectivity, but the exact features and supported operating systems vary by adapter, so install the manufacturer’s current package when one is available.
Run the saved manufacturer installer
- Open the folder where you saved the driver package and run its installer.
- Accept the license terms and choose the installation option recommended for the adapter.
- Follow the prompts and restart when requested.
- If the package contains separate Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth components, install both when your model supports both functions.
For Intel adapters, the vendor documents both an automated Driver & Support Assistant route and a manual download-and-install route. Whichever method you use, verify that the package explicitly lists your adapter model and Windows version.

Install through Device Manager when the installer cannot detect the card
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters. If the card is not listed there, check Other devices for an unknown network controller.
- Right-click the relevant device and select Update driver.
- Choose Browse my computer for drivers.
- Browse to the folder containing the downloaded driver, select it, and enable Include subfolders if that option is shown.
- Continue through the installation and restart Windows if prompted.
Perform a clean reinstall only for a driver problem
A clean reinstall is useful when the replacement is visible but the driver is corrupted or repeatedly fails. Download and save the correct package first. In Device Manager, right-click the wireless adapter, choose Uninstall device, and select the option to remove the driver package only if Windows presents it and you intend to replace it. Restart, then run the saved installer. Some Windows inbox drivers reinstall automatically and cannot be removed through the same option; removing a driver package is not required for an ordinary card replacement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify that Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth work
- Open Device Manager and expand Network adapters. Confirm that the new adapter appears without a warning icon.
- Open Properties, select the Driver tab, and record the provider, date, and version. This confirms which package Windows is actually using.
- Select the Wi‑Fi network icon in the Windows taskbar, choose your network, and enter its credentials. A successful connection confirms basic wireless operation.
- If the card includes Bluetooth, open Windows Bluetooth settings and pair a known device. If Bluetooth is absent while Wi‑Fi works, check the USB-header connection and install the Bluetooth component of the driver package.
If the adapter appears in Device Manager but cannot connect, first confirm that antennas are attached and that the selected network and credentials are correct. If it does not appear at all, use the hardware checks in the next section before repeatedly reinstalling software.

When to use the computer maker’s support channel
Use the prebuilt system maker’s documentation when the desktop has a proprietary chassis, unusual retention hardware, customized BIOS settings, or a driver package that differs from the card vendor’s generic release. For a custom build, the motherboard manual is the authority for slot layout and USB-header pinout, while the adapter maker’s manual controls antenna and Bluetooth connections. If the card is still absent from Device Manager after the physical and firmware checks, provide the manufacturer with the desktop model, motherboard model, adapter model, Windows version, and any Device Manager error code.
A successful replacement ends with all three pieces working together: the card is firmly seated and connected, Windows is using a driver intended for that exact hardware and operating system, and Device Manager shows the adapter without an error. Treat Bluetooth as a separate function whenever the card’s design gives it a separate USB connection or driver.
