Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf Windows stopped starting immediately after an update, driver, app, or settings change, work through Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE): run Startup Repair, undo the specific change, try Safe Mode, repair system files, and only then use Reset this PC or installation media. This order gives the least disruptive fix priority while protecting personal files.
Start with the recovery workspace, not a reinstall
When the desktop will not load, Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) is the central workspace for repair. It is a set of built-in Windows tools designed to troubleshoot and fix common system problems. The recovery sequence matters: a targeted rollback can reverse the recent software change without touching your documents, while a reset or clean installation can remove applications, settings, or personal data.

The tools below apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11. They are most useful when the boot failure began soon after a clearly identifiable change, but they also provide a sensible escalation path when the cause is uncertain.

How to enter Windows Recovery Environment
Windows may open WinRE automatically after several failed starts. If it does not, use one of these routes:

- From a working sign-in or desktop: hold Shift while selecting Restart. Windows should restart into the recovery menus.
- From repeated failed starts: allow the machine to fail to boot several times. Windows can detect the repeated failures and display the recovery screen automatically.
- With installation media: on another working PC, create bootable Windows installation media on a USB flash drive. Start the failed computer from that drive, choose the appropriate language and keyboard options, then select Repair my PC rather than starting an installation. This returns you to WinRE.
If the system asks for a BitLocker recovery key, the drive is encrypted and WinRE needs that key before it can access the Windows installation. Find the key before attempting a reset or other operation that needs the encrypted volume.
Run Startup Repair first
Startup Repair is the first targeted action for a normal boot failure. It automatically checks and repairs common problems such as damaged system files and boot-configuration errors. It is designed specifically for issues that prevent the operating system from starting.
- In WinRE, select Troubleshoot.
- Open Advanced options.
- Select Startup Repair.
- Choose the Windows installation when prompted and let the diagnostic finish without powering off the computer.
Restart when Startup Repair reports that it has finished. If Windows still returns to WinRE or Automatic Repair, do not repeatedly rerun the same scan; move to the rollback that matches the change you made.

The most effective recovery option depends on whether the trigger was a Windows update, a third-party program, a driver, or a broader configuration change.
| What happened immediately before the failure | Use this WinRE option | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| A Windows Update installed or completed | Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates | Removes a recent Windows update, making it the narrowest response to an update-triggered boot failure. |
| A driver, application, or system setting was changed | Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore | Returns system files and settings to an earlier restore point while leaving personal files in place. |
| The change is unknown, or the rollback must be performed manually | Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings, then Safe Mode | Starts Windows with a limited set of drivers so you can remove the new program or driver and undo the configuration change. |
Remove a recent Windows update
Use Uninstall Updates when the boot problem began after Windows Update rather than after a separately installed application or driver.

- Open Troubleshoot in WinRE.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Uninstall Updates.
- Choose the available option for removing the most recent quality or feature update, follow the confirmation prompts, and restart.
This choice is deliberately narrower than resetting Windows: it targets the update that may have introduced the incompatibility instead of removing all applications and settings.
Use System Restore for a driver, program, or settings change
System Restore is the broader rollback for a recent system-level change. It uses a restore point to revert Windows system files and settings, but it does not erase your personal documents, photos, or other personal files. Applications and drivers installed after the selected restore point can be removed, so read the list of affected programs if Windows displays one.

- Select an administrator account if requested and enter its password.
- Choose a restore point dated before the failed installation or configuration change.
- Review the affected programs, confirm the restore, and allow Windows to restart.
If no restore point exists, System Restore cannot create one retroactively. Return to WinRE and use Safe Mode or the system-file repair step instead.
Start Safe Mode and remove the offending software
Safe Mode loads Windows with a limited driver and service set. If the computer starts there, the basic Windows installation can run well enough for you to remove the newly installed application, roll back a driver, or undo a setting that prevents a normal start.
- Open Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings in WinRE.
- Select Restart.
- Choose the Safe Mode option from the Startup Settings screen.
- After Windows loads, uninstall the program that was installed immediately before the failure, or remove the driver and return to the previous driver version if that option is available.
- Undo the configuration change that coincided with the failure, then restart normally.
If Safe Mode works but a normal restart fails, the problem is likely tied to a driver, service, startup program, or setting that Safe Mode omits. Remove the most recent change first rather than uninstalling unrelated software.

Repair corrupted Windows components with DISM and SFC
If Startup Repair and the appropriate rollback do not restore startup, use the built-in system-file repair tools. Microsoft’s troubleshooting order is important: run Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) first, then System File Checker (SFC). DISM repairs the component store and supplies the files that SFC may need; SFC then scans protected Windows files and replaces damaged copies.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- In WinRE, open Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt. If Windows can start in Safe Mode, you can also open an elevated Command Prompt there.
- Run this command and wait for it to complete:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth - After DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannow - Wait for SFC to reach 100 percent, close Command Prompt, and restart.
Do not reverse the order. Running SFC before DISM can leave SFC without the repaired component files it needs. Both operations can take time, and an apparently paused percentage does not by itself mean the process has failed.
What to do when Automatic Repair keeps looping
An Automatic Repair loop means Windows can reach its recovery logic but still cannot complete a normal start. Treat the loop as a menu for the next targeted action:
- If the failure followed Windows Update, use Uninstall Updates.
- If it followed a driver, application, or settings change and a restore point is available, use System Restore.
- If you can reach Startup Settings, test Safe Mode and remove the recent program or driver.
- If those options do not resolve the problem, run DISM followed by SFC from Command Prompt.
Startup Repair is not a general undo function for every recent installation. When it reports that it could not repair the PC, move to the option that directly reverses the suspected change instead of treating the message as proof that personal files are lost.
Use Reset this PC only after targeted repairs fail
Reset this PC reinstalls Windows and is more disruptive than Startup Repair, Uninstall Updates, System Restore, or Safe Mode removal. Before choosing it, back up files that are accessible from another operating system or recovery environment, and make sure you have the BitLocker recovery key if the drive is encrypted.

- In WinRE, select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.
- Choose between Keep my files and Remove everything.
- Read the on-screen list of what will be removed, confirm the choice, and let the reinstallation complete without interrupting power.
| Reset choice | Personal files | Applications and settings | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep my files | Preserved | Installed applications and settings are removed | Windows is too damaged to repair, but you need to retain documents and other personal data. |
| Remove everything | Deleted | Applications and settings are removed | A last-resort rebuild when you have a verified backup or intentionally want to erase the installation. |
“Keep my files” is not an application-preserving repair. You will need to reinstall programs and reapply settings afterward. “Remove everything” has the additional consequence of deleting personal data, so do not select it until your backup is confirmed.
Create and use Windows installation media
Installation media is the fallback when the computer cannot reach WinRE reliably or the installed recovery tools are damaged. Use another working PC to create a bootable Windows USB flash drive with Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool instructions.
- Create the bootable USB on the working computer.
- Connect it to the failed computer and start the computer from the USB drive using its boot-device selection method.
- At Windows Setup, select the language, time, and keyboard options.
- Choose Repair my PC to return to WinRE and use Startup Repair, Uninstall Updates, System Restore, Startup Settings, or Command Prompt.
- If recovery tools cannot restore startup, follow the installation path appropriate to your backup and data requirements.
Depending on the setup path and the choices shown for that installation, Windows installation media can preserve personal files and applications. A clean installation is different: it removes personal data, applications, and settings. Confirm which path you are taking before accepting the final installation prompt.

| Option | Preserves personal files? | Removes apps, drivers, or settings? | Needs external media? | How directly it reverses the suspected change |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Startup Repair | Yes, it targets startup components | Does not intentionally remove installed apps | No, when WinRE is available | Repairs common boot files and system-startup errors; it does not specifically uninstall a program. |
| Uninstall Updates | Yes | Removes the selected recent Windows update | No, when WinRE is available | Most direct response to an update-triggered failure. |
| System Restore | Yes | Reverts system files and settings; later apps or drivers may be removed | No, when a restore point exists | Directly reverses a broader recent system change. |
| Safe Mode removal | Yes | You choose which new program, driver, or setting to undo | No, when Startup Settings works | Direct manual control over the suspected software change. |
| DISM followed by SFC | Yes | Repairs Windows components and protected files rather than rolling back an app | No, when Command Prompt is available | Addresses corruption that may have resulted from the change or failed update. |
| Reset this PC — Keep my files | Yes | Removes applications and settings and reinstalls Windows | No, if the local reset files are usable | Broad rebuild rather than a specific rollback. |
| Reset this PC — Remove everything | No | Removes personal files, applications, and settings | No, if the local reset files are usable | Complete local reset; use only with a verified backup or deliberate data erasure. |
| Clean installation from media | No | Removes data, apps, and settings | Yes | Replaces the installation instead of undoing one software change. |
Common obstacles and the safest response
WinRE never appears
Use Shift+Restart if you can reach a sign-in screen or desktop. If the machine cannot reach either, create installation media on another PC and select Repair my PC after booting from the USB drive.
There is no System Restore point
System Restore can only use restore points that already exist. Choose Safe Mode to remove the new software manually, or continue with DISM and SFC.

The update rollback is unavailable
If WinRE does not offer the relevant update-removal choice, use Startup Repair, then try System Restore or Safe Mode according to the change that preceded the failure.
Startup Repair completes but Windows still will not start
That result means the common automated startup fixes were insufficient; it does not identify the cause or imply that your personal files are gone. Proceed to Uninstall Updates, System Restore, Safe Mode, or system-file repair rather than repeating Startup Repair indefinitely.
Reset asks for a recovery key
Pause and locate the BitLocker recovery key before continuing. Without it, the encrypted Windows volume may remain inaccessible to recovery operations.
After Windows starts again
- Remove or update the program or driver that immediately preceded the failure before reinstalling anything else.
- Restart once more normally to confirm that the repair survives a full boot.
- Reinstall removed applications one at a time so a repeat failure identifies the trigger.
- Keep a current backup before attempting another major update or reset.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. WinRE, Startup Repair, System Restore, DISM, SFC, Reset this PC, and installation media can still function on an existing Windows 10 installation, but an unsupported system no longer receives free Windows Update support or security fixes. If recovery succeeds on Windows 10, treat the restored boot as an opportunity to plan a supported operating-system upgrade or replacement rather than assuming future security updates will continue.
