How to Repair (Rebuild) the WMI Repository in Windows 10 and 11

If a WMI error makes you suspect repository corruption, check before rebuilding. Run winmgmt /verifyrepository from an elevated Command Prompt; if Windows reports the repository as inconsistent, try winmgmt /salvagerepository before considering the more disruptive winmgmt /resetrepository. A WMI error alone does not prove the repository is corrupt, and Microsoft warns that deleting it as a first step can damage Windows or installed applications.

What the WMI repair commands do

Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) provides management data and functions used by Windows and applications. The built-in winmgmt commands offer three distinct actions: check the live repository, attempt a rebuild that preserves readable content, or return the repository to its initial operating-system installation state. Microsoft documents these commands for Windows client versions beginning with Windows Vista, including Windows 10 and 11.

Command Purpose Effect and caution
winmgmt /verifyrepository Checks whether the live WMI repository is consistent. Diagnostic only; it does not repair the repository. With no path argument, it checks the repository currently used by WMI. Microsoft documents the command and behavior.
winmgmt /salvagerepository Checks consistency and rebuilds the repository if it finds inconsistency. Merges readable content from the inconsistent repository into the rebuilt one and restores MOF files marked with #pragma autorecover. Microsoft command reference.
winmgmt /resetrepository Resets the repository to its initial operating-system installation state. More disruptive than salvage. It restores MOF files marked for autorecovery, but that does not establish that every third-party provider or product registration will be restored. Microsoft command reference.

Before rebuilding, confirm the problem points to WMI

A WMI error can be the visible symptom of a failure elsewhere in Windows, rather than evidence that the repository is corrupt. Consider which application or function is failing, whether a particular provider or namespace is involved, and what related event messages say. Microsoft also identifies factors such as folder security settings, available disk space, memory, provider or application faults as possible contributors to repository startup or recovery errors. See Microsoft’s WMI event message reference for context on reported errors.

Check and repair the repository

  1. Open an elevated Command Prompt. Use an account with administrative rights so the WMI service-management command can run with the required privileges.
  2. Check consistency. Run winmgmt /verifyrepository. Without a path argument, this checks the live repository WMI is using. If Windows reports it as consistent, do not run a rebuild solely because an application showed a WMI error; investigate that application, its provider, and relevant event details instead.
  3. Attempt salvage if Windows reports inconsistency. Run winmgmt /salvagerepository. This checks the repository and rebuilds it if needed, merging content that remains readable and restoring MOF files marked for autorecovery.
  4. Verify the result and retest the original failure. Run winmgmt /verifyrepository again, then check the affected WMI function or application. A consistent repository does not guarantee resolution if the underlying cause is elsewhere.
  5. Reserve reset for a justified case. If salvage has not resolved a confirmed repository problem, assess the impact before running winmgmt /resetrepository. It returns the repository to its initial operating-system installation state, not a guaranteed restoration of every installed product’s WMI registrations.

Why reset is not routine cleanup

Microsoft explicitly warns: “Under any circumstances, do not delete the WMI repository as a first action because deleting the repository can cause damage to the system or to installed applications.” Do not manually delete the Repository folder as a substitute for the documented sequence.

Repository size alone is not a reason to reset. Microsoft says size varies with machine resources, services, applications, and environment; its performance guidance advises against resetting a bloated repository without prior guidance from Microsoft support professionals. The guidance also describes RSoP logging and monitoring applications such as Configuration Manager as common causes in its server troubleshooting context, not as a universal diagnosis for Windows 10 or 11 PCs. When to investigate further or contact support

If the repository verifies as consistent, salvage does not resolve the issue, or the reason for failure is unclear, avoid repeatedly resetting it. Review the specific event details and investigate the affected provider or application, system resources, disk space, and relevant folder security settings. For a persistent failure, gather diagnostic information and contact Microsoft Support or the support team for the affected product.

Microsoft’s Azure Windows VM Agent procedure is a workload-specific example: it checks and backs up the repository, attempts salvage, and may proceed to reset if that agent’s prescribed validation fails. That sequence addresses the Azure VM Agent scenario; it is not a blanket instruction to reset every Windows PC after salvage. See Microsoft’s Azure Windows VM Agent troubleshooting steps.
