Use a different remedy for each kind of damage: remove surface pills, leave an intact pulled loop uncut, and cover a small hole or tear with clothing- or gear-rated repair tape. First inspect the jacket under good light, because a pill is a loose-fiber ball, a snag is a pulled loop or strand, and a tear is an actual break in the fabric. Matching the repair to the damage prevents a cosmetic problem from becoming a hole.
The steps below focus on appearance, preventing further damage, and deciding when a professional or manufacturer repair is safer than home work. Results depend on the fleece face, backing, fabric weight, and location of the damage; no home method guarantees an invisible or permanent repair.

Identify the damage before touching it
Fleece problems that look similar require different handling. Check both sides of the garment and gently smooth the surrounding fabric without pulling the damaged area.

| What you see | What it means | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| Small fuzzy balls or clusters on an otherwise intact surface | Pilling: loosened fibers have tangled together. | Remove the pills by hand or with a pill shaver, then reduce the rubbing that caused them. |
| One loop or strand pulled above the surface, with no open gap | Snag: a yarn or fleece loop has been drawn out of position. | Stop pulling, do not cut the loop, and seek maker or clothing-repair advice if it is prominent. |
| An opening, split, or missing section of fabric | Tear or hole: the fabric itself is broken. | Use clothing- or outdoor-gear repair tape for a small, stable opening, or ask about professional repair. |
If a snag has already created an opening, treat it as a tear. If the fabric around a “pill” is thin, threadbare, or separating, do not shave it until you have considered a patch or professional assessment.

Prepare the jacket and work area
- Read the care label. Washing and drying instructions vary by fleece blend, finish, lining, and trim. The label is the controlling instruction for cleaning before and after repair.
- Clean and dry the area. Dirt and moisture can make pills harder to see and can interfere with tape adhesion. Do not apply tape over a damp, oily, or visibly dirty surface.
- Use a flat, well-lit workspace. Lay the jacket on a table and support the panel so it does not stretch while you inspect it.
- Map the damage. Note whether it is on a high-friction zone such as a shoulder under a backpack strap, a waistbelt path, a cuff, or near a hook-and-loop closure. The cause helps you prevent recurrence.
- Gather only the appropriate tool. A pill shaver is for pills, not loops or holes. Repair tape is for a small tear or hole, not for making a pulled loop disappear.
How do I get pills off a fleece jacket?
Pills are small balls of entangled fibers. REI Expert Advice identifies abrasion as the main cause—its guidance says, “Abrasion is almost always the cause of pilling.” Fleece can pill even when it is soft and well cared for, so removal improves appearance but does not return the fabric to its original condition.
Option 1: Pick or brush pills away by hand
For a few isolated pills, use your fingers to lift the ball away or a soft brush to move it off the surface. Work slowly and only on the raised fiber ball. Do not tug on fibers that remain attached to the fleece face; pulling can enlarge the affected area.
Option 2: Use a pill shaver
A pill shaver is suitable when a broad panel has many visible pills. Use it only on a clean, flat, taut section and follow the device maker’s instructions for guard height, blade condition, and emptying the lint compartment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Place the jacket flat and smooth the panel without stretching it excessively.
- Test the shaver on a concealed area or an inside edge if the device instructions permit.
- Move the shaver lightly over the pilled surface; do not press down or make repeated passes over one spot.
- Stop immediately if the fleece catches, thins, snags, or begins to form a hole. A catching surface is a sign that shaving is no longer a cosmetic operation.
- Remove loose lint and inspect the panel from several angles before treating another section.
Hand removal and a pill shaver are appearance fixes. They do not rebuild fibers that have worn away, and aggressive shaving can leave a visibly thinner patch.

Preventing new pills
Because abrasion is the principal cause, prevention means reducing rubbing rather than promising a pill-free jacket. Check the contact points that repeatedly touch backpack shoulder straps or waistbelts, seat backs, rough outer layers, and hook-and-loop closures. Close hook-and-loop tabs before washing or storing the jacket, and adjust or reposition equipment when practical so the same fleece panel is not continuously rubbed.
Follow the jacket’s own wash and dry instructions. Avoid treating a generic laundry setting as universally safe: heat, agitation, and contact with abrasive items can affect different fleece constructions differently. Inspect the garment after laundering so a small developing snag or thin spot is noticed before it becomes a hole.
How do I fix a snag in a fleece jacket?
A snag is a pulled loop or strand, not a pill. Cutting an intact loop may convert a manageable cosmetic defect into a hole, so do not trim it with scissors or pull it through the fabric. The primary guidance reviewed for this subject explains pilling and small tears but does not establish a universal, fleece-specific technique for repairing pulled loops.
Safe first response
- Stop wearing or handling the jacket in a way that could catch the loop again.
- Keep the loop in its current position. Do not tug, stretch, or cut it.
- Inspect the surrounding fabric on both sides. Look for a broken yarn, an opening, or thinning that would make this a tear rather than an isolated snag.
- If the loop is prominent, located at a seam, or attached to damaged fabric, contact the garment maker or a clothing-repair professional and describe the fleece type and damage.
This cautious approach is general garment-care advice, not a manufacturer-published fleece repair procedure. A professional can decide whether the loop can be secured from the inside, whether the panel has lost structural yarns, and whether a patch is needed.

When a snag needs urgent attention
- The loop is still catching on bags, jewelry, vehicle hardware, or hook-and-loop fasteners.
- You can see daylight through the fabric or the opening is enlarging.
- The snag is at a cuff, pocket opening, zipper edge, shoulder seam, or another load-bearing area.
- The fleece is threadbare around the loop.
In these cases, isolate the garment from further abrasion and obtain repair advice rather than trying a pill shaver or improvised trimming.
Can I fix a small hole in fleece?
For a small, stable hole or tear, Patagonia’s repair FAQ states: “If you have a small hole or tear, a patch of Tenacious Tape is usually all you need.” The practical category is clothing- or outdoor-gear repair tape: choose a product intended for fabric, then follow that tape maker’s application directions and the jacket’s care label.
Applying a repair-tape patch
- Confirm the damage is suitable. Tape is intended for a small opening, not a large missing section, a long split under tension, or fabric that is already threadbare over a broad area.
- Clean and dry the surrounding fabric. Remove lint, dust, and oils without violating the garment’s care instructions. Let the area dry fully.
- Support the panel. Place it flat so the tear is in its normal shape. Do not stretch the fleece to close an opening artificially.
- Prepare the patch. Use the tape maker’s recommended size and shape. A patch that extends beyond the damaged area gives the adhesive sound fabric to grip; do not assume one shape works for every tape.
- Apply according to the tape instructions. Press the patch onto the specified side of the garment with the required pressure and dwell time. Some tapes have handling or cure requirements; those details belong to the product instructions.
- Allow the stated set time. Keep the area free of rubbing, washing, and stretching until the tape maker says it can be handled or laundered.
- Inspect the edges. If an edge lifts, the fabric was unsuitable, contaminated, or insufficiently prepared. Do not keep wearing the jacket while the patch is peeling; recheck the instructions or seek repair advice.
A tape patch may remain visible, especially on a high-contrast fleece or a curved panel. Tape is a practical way to stop a small tear from spreading, not a promise of an invisible finish or permanent compatibility with every fleece face and backing.
When tape is not the right answer
- The hole is large, irregular, or surrounded by weak, threadbare fabric.
- The tear crosses a seam, zipper, pocket opening, or elastic edge that carries repeated stress.
- The garment has a coating, laminated backing, insulation, or finish that the tape instructions do not list as compatible.
- The tape cannot lie flat because the panel is under constant tension.
- The jacket is valuable, technical, or still covered by a maker’s repair program that you want to use.
Do not substitute a pill shaver for a patch, and do not use a sewing kit as though a fleece-specific sewing method had been established here. A sewing kit may be a conditional option for a genuinely loose seam when a competent repairer can match the thread, stitch, and backing, but unsupported stitching can pucker fleece or enlarge a damaged hole.

Should you use a manufacturer repair service?
Manufacturer repair can be preferable when the damage affects a seam, closure, technical finish, or large area. Eligibility is not automatic. For example, Patagonia’s Canada FAQ lists pilled fleece, threadbare items, and numerous holes as examples it may not repair. That is a location- and company-specific policy, not a rule for every fleece brand.
Patagonia’s current US repair page, accessed in 2026, says mail-in repair takes up to 10 weeks on average and lists $15 round-trip shipping. Those terms can change, and the page’s current eligibility rules apply only to the US service. Check the appropriate regional repair page before sending anything.
| Situation | Home approach | Professional or maker route |
|---|---|---|
| A few surface pills, fabric intact | Hand removal or careful pill shaver. | Usually unnecessary unless the fabric is thinning. |
| One pulled loop, no opening | Do not cut or pull; isolate from further catching. | Recommended for a prominent loop or uncertain damage. |
| Small hole or short tear on sound fabric | Clothing- or gear-rated repair tape, applied to instructions. | Useful if the location is stressed or appearance matters. |
| Threadbare area, many holes, seam failure, or large tear | Do not shave or tape blindly. | Ask the maker or a clothing-repair professional about eligibility and construction. |
Choose the repair by damage, location, and finish
Use this decision sequence rather than choosing a tool first:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Is the fabric intact? If yes and the issue is a fuzzy ball, treat pilling. If a loop is raised, treat it as a snag. If there is an opening, treat it as a tear.
- Will the area rub? Shoulder straps, waistbelts, cuffs, and hook-and-loop contact points are likely to recur as abrasion zones. A cosmetic fix without changing the rubbing may not last.
- How important is appearance? Pill removal can make a jacket look neater but may reveal worn fibers. Tape can remain visible. Professional work may be worth considering for a visible front panel.
- How large or structurally important is the damage? Small, stable openings on sound fabric are the best candidates for tape. Seams, edges, and threadbare areas deserve specialist assessment.
- Would the manufacturer accept it? Check the current regional policy before altering the garment. A home patch or aggressive shaving may affect how a service evaluates the item.
Troubleshooting common outcomes
The pills return after shaving
Recurring abrasion is the likely reason. Recheck backpack straps, waistbelts, rough layers, and hook-and-loop closures, then follow the care label. Remove only new surface pills; repeated deep shaving can thin the fleece.

The shaver catches the fabric
Stop. Do not force the device through a snagging area. Inspect for a pulled loop or thin spot and switch to snag or tear guidance as appropriate.
The tape patch lifts at an edge
Stop wearing the jacket in conditions that flex or rub the patch. Review surface preparation, patch placement, pressure, and set time against the tape maker’s instructions. If the fabric is weak or the location is under tension, seek professional advice instead of adding random layers.
The “snag” becomes a hole
Stop pulling and treat the opening as a tear. Keep the area from catching, then assess whether a small tape patch can sit on sound fabric. If the surrounding fleece is thin or the hole is enlarging, ask the maker or a repair professional.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The repaired area looks different
That is a normal possibility. Pill removal changes the surface height, while tape adds a patch with its own color, sheen, and edge. The goal is to stabilize damage and improve useful wear, not to guarantee a factory-new appearance.
Care after the repair
- Follow the jacket’s care label and the repair-tape maker’s washing instructions; the more restrictive instruction should control.
- Close hook-and-loop fasteners before laundering or storing the jacket.
- Keep repaired panels away from avoidable rubbing and inspect them after washing.
- Store the jacket where zippers, rough hardware, and open fasteners cannot catch the fleece.
- Address new pills early and isolate a new loop before it is pulled farther.
The practical rule is simple: remove pills gently, never cut an intact snag, and patch a genuinely small tear only with a product made for clothing or outdoor gear. Escalate threadbare, structural, or extensive damage before a cosmetic repair makes the problem harder to solve.
