Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If the Xbox app opens but will not sign in, repair it in stages rather than immediately deleting Gaming Services. Sign in to the same Microsoft account in Microsoft Store and Xbox, install Windows and Store updates, clear the Store cache with wsreset.exe, then use Xbox’s Repair and Reset options. If that fails, run Microsoft’s Gaming Services Repair Tool. Only then use the elevated PowerShell workaround that removes Gaming Services and its service keys, restart Windows, and reinstall the component from the Xbox prompt.
What this repair sequence fixes
The Xbox app depends on Microsoft Store components and Gaming Services. A damaged Store cache, an out-of-date app, a broken package registration, or stopped Xbox services can leave the app stuck at sign-in, repeatedly ask you to sign in, show that Gaming Services is missing, or display an installation error.

The procedure below applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Settings labels can differ slightly by build, but the order is the same: start with actions that preserve your installed apps and data, then move to the more invasive Gaming Services reinstall only when the earlier steps do not restore sign-in.
Before you start
Have the Microsoft account password or verification method you normally use for Xbox available. The account used in Microsoft Store should be the account that owns your Xbox purchases or PC Game Pass access. If you use a work or school Windows account, Store licensing can still depend on a separate personal Microsoft account.

Save any visible error code and note whether the failure affects only sign-in, the Xbox app launch, or a particular game. These details determine whether you should remain with app-level repairs or move to Gaming Services. Close Xbox and any Game Pass game before running a package-removal command, and connect the PC to the internet before attempting the final reinstall.
Choose the least disruptive option first
| Action | What it changes | Administrator rights | Restart required | Relative risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Windows and Microsoft Store updates | Updates the operating system and Store-delivered components | No, unless Windows requests it | Only if Windows Update requests one | Lowest |
wsreset.exe |
Clears the Microsoft Store cache | No | No | Low |
| Xbox app Repair | Attempts to fix the app without removing its data | No | No | Low |
| Xbox app Reset | Resets the app to its default state | No | No | Moderate |
| Gaming Services Repair Tool for PC | Uses Microsoft’s first-party recovery workflow when available in your Xbox app/build | Follow the tool’s prompts | Follow the tool’s prompts | Lower than manual removal |
| Manual PowerShell workaround | Removes the all-user Gaming Services package and two Gaming Services registry service keys | Yes; run PowerShell elevated | Yes | Highest in this sequence |
| Xbox app reinstall | Removes and downloads the Xbox app again from Microsoft Store | No, unless Windows requests it | Not normally | Moderate |
Repair is more reversible than Reset, and Reset is more reversible than removing the package and service keys. Windows and Store updates can change software versions, while wsreset.exe only clears Store cache data. The manual workaround is the only step here that deliberately changes all-user package registration and service registry entries. No step guarantees success; Microsoft documents these procedures as recovery methods, not as a success-rate promise.
1. Check the account, updates, and service status
Use the same Microsoft account in both apps
- Open Microsoft Store and select the account icon.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account you intend to use for Xbox.
- Open the Xbox app and sign in with that same account.
Using different accounts can make Store licensing and Xbox sign-in appear inconsistent. Complete this check before removing any package. If Store shows a different account, sign out there and sign back in with the account associated with your games or subscription.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallInstall pending Windows updates
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install every offered update.
- Restart if Windows requests it, then return to the Xbox app.
Microsoft’s Store-app guidance puts Windows updating before app repair or reinstall. Do not skip a required restart: an update that is waiting for reboot can leave Store components in a partially updated state. Check Windows Update again after restarting in case a second update appears.
Update Microsoft Store apps
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library.
- Select Get updates and allow the Xbox app and related components to update.
If the Store cannot download updates, note the displayed error code. That code is useful if you later need to distinguish a Store problem from a Gaming Services problem. Leave the Store open until downloads finish; closing it during an update can postpone installation.
Rule out an Xbox service outage
Check Xbox’s current service-status page before making system changes. If Microsoft is reporting an outage affecting account, authentication, or gaming services, local repairs will not restore sign-in until the service recovers. A service outage can also make a correctly repaired installation appear broken, so retry after the status page returns to normal.

2. Clear the Microsoft Store cache with wsreset.exe
- Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog.
- Type
wsreset.exeand press Enter. - Wait while the command runs. Microsoft Store should reopen automatically when the cache reset finishes.
- Launch Xbox and try to sign in again.
The window may appear blank while the reset runs. Do not close it simply because there is no progress indicator. This is a reversible cache operation; it does not remove the Xbox app or Gaming Services. If Store does not reopen, wait a few minutes, open it manually, and check whether Library updates now work.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3. Repair, then reset the Xbox app
Try Repair first
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Xbox, select its three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- When Windows finishes, open Xbox and test sign-in.
Repair is the least disruptive app-level fix because it attempts recovery without the full reset action. If the sign-in screen still loops or the app will not open, continue to Reset. Wait for the Repair control to finish before launching Xbox; running both actions at once can obscure which step changed the behavior.
Use Reset only if Repair fails
- Return to Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Xbox > Advanced options.
- Select Reset and confirm.
- Reopen Xbox and sign in again.
Reset returns the app to its default state. You may need to sign in again and reapply app preferences. It does not by itself perform the more invasive all-user Gaming Services package removal described later. Resetting Xbox also does not replace Windows updates, Store updates, or the Gaming Services package.
4. Run Microsoft’s Gaming Services Repair Tool for PC
Microsoft provides an official Gaming Services Repair Tool for PC through Xbox Support. Use that first-party tool before editing the registry manually if it is available in your current Xbox app or Windows build.
- Open the Xbox Support page for Gaming Services Repair Tool for PC.
- Follow the tool’s on-screen instructions exactly as displayed for your build.
- Allow any requested administrator approval and restart Windows if the tool asks you to.
- Open Xbox and test sign-in after the tool completes.
The available buttons and sequence can change with the Xbox app version, so use the labels the tool presents rather than assuming a particular repair action. If the tool is unavailable or does not resolve the problem, proceed to the documented manual workaround. Do not substitute a third-party registry cleaner for Microsoft’s tool.

5. Reinstall Gaming Services from elevated PowerShell
Use this section only after the reversible steps and the official repair tool have failed. The commands remove the Gaming Services package for all users and delete the GamingServices and GamingServicesNet service registry keys. They require administrator rights and a Windows restart.

Record the symptom before removal
Write down any displayed error code, especially 0x80073D26 or 0x8007139F. Keeping the code lets you identify whether the issue matches Microsoft’s historical Windows 10 case and gives support staff a precise starting point. Also note the Windows edition and whether the Xbox app can open, because package removal is unnecessary for a simple account mismatch.
Create the script
- Open Notepad.
- Paste the following commands exactly:
Get-AppxPackage *gamingservices* -allusers | remove-appxpackage -allusers
Remove-Item -Path "HKLM:SystemCurrentControlSetServicesGamingServices" -recurse
Remove-Item -Path "HKLM:SystemCurrentControlSetServicesGamingServicesNet" -recurse
- Save the file as
RepairGamingServices.ps1. Ensure Notepad does not append.txtto the filename.
Save it somewhere easy to identify, such as the desktop, and verify that File Explorer shows the .ps1 extension. Do not add extra commands, change the registry paths, or copy a script from an unrelated troubleshooting page.
Run it with administrator approval
- Open PowerShell with Run as administrator.
- Run the saved script from that elevated PowerShell session.
- Wait for the commands to finish. Do not close PowerShell while the package and service entries are being removed.
This is not a harmless cache reset: it changes package registration and service configuration for all users. If you are uncomfortable with an elevated script or cannot identify the correct script path, stop here and use Microsoft support rather than guessing at registry commands. The commands are a Microsoft-documented workaround, not a reason to delete other Xbox, Store, or Windows service keys.
Restart and reinstall from the Xbox prompt
- Restart Windows after the script completes.
- Open the Xbox app.
- Look for the blue banner saying:
This app needs an extra component. Gaming Services is needed for playing some games. Administrator approval required. Install
- Select Install, approve the prompt, and wait for Gaming Services to finish installing.
- Close and reopen Xbox, then test sign-in.
Microsoft’s documented workaround specifically requires the restart before reinstalling. Do not expect the component to be restored merely by running the removal commands. If the banner does not appear, do not repeatedly rerun the removal script; move to the checks in the symptom section below.
6. Check the Xbox services in Windows
If Gaming Services has been restored but sign-in still fails, verify the Xbox services that Microsoft identifies for this troubleshooting path. A Microsoft External Staff moderator’s June 21, 2026 guidance places this check alongside Store-cache clearing, Xbox Repair and Reset, and elevated Gaming Services reinstall.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
services.mscand press Enter. - For each service below, open its properties, confirm that Startup type is Automatic, and check that the service is running:
- Xbox Live Auth Manager
- Xbox Live Game Save
- Xbox Live Networking Service
If a service is stopped, select Start, apply the setting, and then retry Xbox sign-in. If Windows refuses to start a service, record the exact message rather than repeatedly changing unrelated services. This checklist does not replace Gaming Services installation; it verifies the supporting Xbox services after the package is present.
7. Reinstall the Xbox app
When Gaming Services is present and the required services are running but Xbox still will not launch or authenticate, reinstall the Xbox app itself.

- Open Microsoft Store and select Library.
- Find Xbox in the installed or available-app list.
- Choose the uninstall option if it is offered, then restart Windows if prompted.
- Return to Library and select Install for Xbox.
- Launch the newly installed app and sign in with the Microsoft account used in Microsoft Store.
Reinstalling the app is separate from reinstalling Gaming Services. If the Store cannot download Xbox, return to the Windows Update, Store update, and wsreset.exe checks instead of repeatedly clicking Install. A Store reinstall cannot correct an Xbox service outage.
What the historical error codes mean
0x80073D26 and 0x8007139F
Microsoft’s KB5004327 describes a Windows 10 situation in which users are redirected to the Gaming Services Store page and encounter 0x80073D26 or 0x8007139F while installing or starting an Xbox Game Pass game. For the affected Windows 10 builds, Microsoft listed the June 11, 2021 update KB5004476 as the resolution.
The package-removal PowerShell commands are described there as a workaround, not as the primary fix. On a current Windows installation, install all offered Windows updates first. Do not treat the 2021 update number as a universal requirement for every Windows 10 or Windows 11 build. If one of these codes persists after updates, retain the code when contacting Microsoft support.
Use the symptom to choose the next step
Xbox opens but returns to the sign-in screen
Confirm that Store and Xbox use the same account, install pending updates, run wsreset.exe, and use Xbox Repair followed by Reset. If the loop continues, run the Gaming Services Repair Tool before the manual PowerShell removal.
Recommended Free Tools
Xbox says Gaming Services is missing
Run the official Gaming Services Repair Tool if available. If it cannot restore the component, use the elevated removal script, restart Windows, and select Install on the blue Gaming Services banner when Xbox displays it.
The Store or Xbox will not update
Finish Windows Update first, then use Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates. A Store cache reset with wsreset.exe is the next reversible action. Capture any Store error code before moving to package removal.
The manual script ran but no install banner appears
Confirm that Windows was restarted after the script. Then open Xbox again. If the banner still does not appear, verify that the Xbox app itself is current through Microsoft Store and use the first-party Gaming Services Repair Tool when available. Do not delete additional registry entries beyond the two keys in Microsoft’s documented workaround.
Sign-in works but games still report a Gaming Services problem
Open services.msc and check Xbox Live Auth Manager, Xbox Live Game Save, and Xbox Live Networking Service. Each should be running with Startup type set to Automatic. If the services are configured correctly and the game still reports an error, retain the exact code for Microsoft support rather than repeating the removal procedure.

Common pitfalls to avoid
- Skipping updates: Do not jump straight to PowerShell when Windows Update or Store has pending updates. Microsoft’s Store guidance puts those updates first.
- Using different accounts: Store licensing and Xbox authentication can look broken when the two apps are signed in with different Microsoft accounts.
- Closing
wsreset.exeearly: The blank window is normal while the cache reset runs. - Resetting before Repair: Repair is the less disruptive app action and should be tried first.
- Editing unrelated registry keys: The documented workaround names only the Gaming Services package and the two service keys shown above.
- Forgetting the restart: The manual workaround is not complete until Windows has restarted and Xbox offers Gaming Services installation.
- Expecting a universal 2021 fix: KB5004476 applies to the affected Windows 10 builds described by Microsoft, not automatically to every current Windows installation.
- Repeating destructive steps: If the first removal and reinstall do not help, collect the exact error and use Microsoft support instead of repeatedly deleting packages.
After sign-in is restored
- Keep Windows and Microsoft Store updates current so Gaming Services and the Xbox app remain on compatible versions.
- Use the Xbox app’s normal sign-out and sign-in controls rather than removing Gaming Services for ordinary account changes.
- Keep the recorded error code and the date of the repair if the problem returns; that information distinguishes a recurring local package issue from a service-side incident.
- Leave the three Xbox services set to Automatic unless Microsoft support gives you a specific reason to change them.
- Keep the official Gaming Services Repair Tool in mind for a future package problem before resorting to manual registry changes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need administrator rights to repair the Xbox app?
No. Windows Update, Microsoft Store updates, wsreset.exe, and Xbox Repair or Reset normally do not require elevation. The manual Gaming Services PowerShell workaround does require PowerShell opened with Run as administrator.
Should I reinstall Gaming Services immediately when Xbox will not sign in?
No. First confirm the account, install Windows and Store updates, clear the Store cache, repair and reset Xbox, and try Microsoft’s Gaming Services Repair Tool. Package removal is the most invasive step in this sequence.
Why is the Gaming Services install banner missing after running the script?
The workaround requires a Windows restart before Xbox can offer installation. Restart, update Xbox through Microsoft Store, and try Microsoft’s official Repair Tool. Do not remove additional registry keys.
What is the difference between Xbox app Reset and reinstalling Gaming Services?
Xbox Reset returns the app to its default state and may require you to sign in again. Gaming Services reinstall removes the all-user Gaming Services package and two service registry keys, requires elevation and a restart, and is substantially more invasive.
Are 0x80073D26 and 0x8007139F still fixed by KB5004476?
Microsoft listed the June 11, 2021 KB5004476 update as the resolution for the affected Windows 10 builds in KB5004327. Install all current Windows updates first; do not assume that 2021 package is required for every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation.
What should I do if Xbox services will not start?
Open services.msc and check Xbox Live Auth Manager, Xbox Live Game Save, and Xbox Live Networking Service. Each should be running with Startup type set to Automatic. Record any Windows error message if a service refuses to start.
The Bottom Line
Use the escalation order: same account, Windows and Store updates, wsreset.exe, Xbox Repair, Xbox Reset, Microsoft’s Gaming Services Repair Tool, then the elevated PowerShell workaround with its required restart. Check the three Xbox services and reinstall the Xbox app only when the component itself is healthy but the app still fails.
