You can repair Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365 on Windows without intentionally deleting documents: save open work first, run the repair command for the installed Office product, and use Document Recovery or Excel’s file-repair tools separately when the problem is an unsaved edit or a damaged file. Quick Repair is the faster Click-to-Run option; Online Repair is more comprehensive but requires an active internet connection. Neither app repair nor uninstalling Office should be treated as a way to recover changes that were never saved.
What Office repair actually fixes
Office repair rebuilds or replaces parts of the installed applications. It is intended for symptoms such as Word, Excel, or PowerPoint failing to start, repeated crashes, missing features, broken updates, or damaged program files. The repair target is the Office installation, not the contents of your documents.

Three different problems are often described as an Office problem:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Broken installation: Windows repair tools modify Office program components. This is the situation addressed by Quick Repair, Online Repair, or an MSI Repair operation.
- Unsaved work after a crash: Document Recovery may offer a saved, AutoSaved, or AutoRecovered copy when you reopen the application. This is a recovery workflow, not an installation repair.
- A damaged document: A particular Excel workbook can require File Recovery, Open and Repair, or Extract Data. Repairing Office itself does not repair every damaged file.
Microsoft’s desktop instructions apply to Windows installations. Menus differ by Windows release and by whether Office uses Click-to-Run or the older MSI installer, so use the labels that appear on your computer.

Protect your current work before changing Office
Repair is designed to preserve created files, but the safest sequence is to protect anything currently open before you start. A repair can close applications, restart Office components, or require a reboot.
- Save every open document with File > Save or File > Save As. If a file has important recent edits, create a second copy in a separate folder or on another storage device.
- For files stored in OneDrive or SharePoint, wait for the sync indicator to show that the latest changes have uploaded. If synchronization is paused or reporting an error, use Save As to make a local copy before repairing Office.
- Close Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and other Office programs. Keep the original file locations unchanged so recovery and synchronization records remain available.
- Record the exact symptom and the application affected. If only one workbook is damaged while Excel opens normally, start with workbook recovery rather than repairing the entire suite.
These precautions protect saved data and give you a fallback copy. They do not guarantee recovery of keystrokes that had never been saved or captured by AutoRecover.
Find the installed Office product in Windows
On current Windows releases, the repair entry is normally under Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on some releases). Search for Microsoft 365, Microsoft Office, or the suite name shown in your installation. Select the product’s menu button and choose Modify. Microsoft’s step-by-step directions are in Repair an Office application.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOlder Windows interfaces may use Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. Select the Office product, choose Change, and then follow the repair dialog. The wording can vary by Windows build, language, and installer technology.

If you installed a suite, selecting it can repair the whole suite even when the visible symptom is limited to one application. Expect the process to affect shared Office components used by Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and other included programs.
Choose the correct repair type
| Installation or option | How to start it | What Microsoft describes | Connection detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Click-to-Run Quick Repair | Windows Office product > Modify > Quick Repair | Faster operation that detects and replaces corrupted files | No internet requirement is specified in the cited repair instructions |
| Click-to-Run Online Repair | Windows Office product > Modify > Online Repair | More comprehensive repair of the installation | Requires an active internet connection |
| MSI-based Office | Control Panel or the Windows change-installation dialog > Change > Repair | Repairs the installation through the MSI maintenance program | The cited instructions do not state a separate connection requirement |
Start with the least disruptive option that fits the problem. For a Click-to-Run installation, Quick Repair is the practical first attempt when Office opens inconsistently or reports damaged components. Choose Online Repair when Quick Repair does not resolve the issue or when several Office programs show installation-related failures. Online Repair is the more extensive operation and needs an active connection while it runs.
Run Quick Repair or Online Repair on Click-to-Run Office
- Open Settings, select Apps, then Installed apps (or Apps & features).
- Find the Microsoft 365 or Office entry, open its three-dot menu, and select Modify. Approve the Windows permission prompt if it appears.
- Choose Quick Repair and select Repair to begin the faster file replacement process. Allow Office applications to close.
- When Windows reports completion, restart the affected Office app and reproduce the original symptom. Open a copy of an important document first, then verify that editing, saving, printing, and add-ins behave as expected.
- If the problem remains, return to the same Modify screen and select Online Repair. Confirm that the computer has an active internet connection before starting, and keep the device powered on until the operation finishes.
- Restart Windows if the repair dialog requests it. Test each affected Office application after the restart rather than assuming that a successful installer message proves every feature works.
Online Repair can refresh more of the installation than Quick Repair, so it may take longer and can reset or replace local Office components. Keep your saved copies available and be prepared to sign in again if the suite asks for account verification.

- In the Microsoft Office setup window, select Repair and continue through the prompts.
- Allow setup to finish, restart Windows if requested, and test the application that originally failed.
MSI maintenance repairs the installed product. It does not turn a damaged workbook into a healthy one and does not recreate unsaved typing that was never written to disk.
What happens to documents during repair or uninstall
Microsoft’s error-specific Office guidance says uninstalling Office removes the applications, not documents, workbooks, or other files created with them. That statement concerns files already created on storage; it is not a promise about unsaved edits, temporary files, or a file that was in the middle of a failed sync. A separate copy of important work remains the prudent safeguard. See Microsoft’s Office update error guidance for that qualification.
Repair normally leaves your document folders in place, but add-ins, sign-in state, file associations, and custom settings can behave differently after a comprehensive repair. Before choosing Online Repair or uninstalling, note any business-critical add-ins and confirm that you know the account used to activate Microsoft 365.

Recover unsaved work with Document Recovery
If Office closed unexpectedly, do not start by repairing the installation. First reopen the affected application and inspect the Document Recovery pane. Microsoft explains this process in Recover your Microsoft 365 files.

- Open the same Office application that was running when the failure occurred.
- Review the Document Recovery entries and compare their timestamps and file names. Entries can represent the last saved version, an AutoSaved version, or an AutoRecovered version.
- Open the candidate with the newest timestamp that contains the missing work. Check several candidates if the names are similar.
- Use File > Save As to write the recovered document to a new, clearly named location. Do not overwrite the only original until you have compared the contents.
- If you are not ready to choose, use the option to view the files later when it is offered. Keeping the recovery entries available gives you time to compare them.
For Microsoft 365 subscribers, Microsoft says AutoSave applies to files stored in OneDrive or SharePoint. A locally stored document may instead depend on AutoRecover settings and the recovery files available on that computer. AutoSave and AutoRecover are not guarantees: a crash, power loss, sync interruption, or application failure can occur before a recovery copy is written.
Once the needed version is saved safely, you can repair Office if the application itself remains unstable. This order prevents an installation change from becoming the first action taken against an unsaved document.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Repair a corrupted Excel workbook
If Excel opens but one workbook reports corruption, use Excel’s file-specific tools before reinstalling Office. Microsoft Support states: “When Microsoft Excel detects a corrupted workbook upon opening, it automatically starts File Recovery mode and attempts to repair the workbook.” The full procedure is in Repair a corrupted workbook.
Let File Recovery run
Open the workbook in Excel and allow File Recovery to complete. If Excel presents a repaired result, inspect worksheets, formulas, charts, links, formatting, and named ranges rather than assuming every element survived. Save the result as a new file so the original remains available for another attempt.

- Plug-and-play expandability
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
Use Open and Repair
- In Excel, choose File > Open > Browse and navigate to the workbook.
- Select the file once, open the arrow beside the Open button, and choose Open and Repair.
- Choose Repair first. Save any recovered workbook under a new name and verify its calculations.
Extract data when repair fails
If Repair cannot open the workbook, repeat the Open and Repair command and choose Extract Data. Microsoft describes this fallback as a way to recover values and formulas when the workbook structure cannot be fully repaired. Formatting, charts, macros, external links, or other features may not be preserved, so compare the extracted result with a known backup.
Keep a preventive backup
Microsoft recommends making a backup copy of a workbook. Store that copy separately from the working file so corruption, accidental overwrite, or a failing drive does not affect both versions. An external drive can be used as an optional separate destination; it is backup storage, not an Office repair tool.
What not to delete: the Office document cache
Do not routinely navigate into application-data folders and delete Office cache files to fix crashes or reclaim space. Microsoft warns that manual or programmatic cache deletion can cause crashes or unrecoverable data loss. The official warning is in Managing Office document cache size.

A decision path for common symptoms
Office will not start, or several apps crash
- Save or copy any files you can still access.
- Run Quick Repair for Click-to-Run Office, or MSI Repair when the change dialog exposes that option.
- Use Online Repair if Quick Repair does not correct the installation; maintain an active internet connection for this operation.
- If the failure continues, check whether a recently installed add-in, update, or Windows profile is involved before repeatedly repairing the same installation.
Only one document contains errors
- Leave the Office installation alone if other files open normally.
- For Excel, use File Recovery or File > Open > Open and Repair.
- Choose Extract Data if workbook repair fails, then compare the recovered values and formulas with a backup.
A crash removed your latest edits
- Reopen the same Office application and inspect Document Recovery entries by timestamp.
- Save the best candidate as a new file before replacing anything.
- Check OneDrive or SharePoint version history when the document was stored there and AutoSave was available to your Microsoft 365 subscription.
Repair appears stuck or the symptom returns
- Keep the computer connected to power and, for Online Repair, to the internet until setup reports completion.
- Restart Windows and test with a copy of a document.
- Confirm whether the issue affects the whole suite or one file; switching from installation repair to document recovery avoids repeating an operation that cannot address the actual cause.
Limits you should understand before proceeding
There is no published success percentage in Microsoft’s support instructions for Quick Repair, Online Repair, Document Recovery, or Excel’s repair commands. Results depend on the installation state, the timing of the failure, the availability of recovery copies, and the extent of file corruption.
Repairing Office is therefore a controlled attempt to restore application components, not a data-recovery guarantee. The safest workflow is to preserve saved and cloud-synced copies first, identify whether the failure is in the app or a particular file, use the narrowest supported tool, and save any recovered result under a new name.
