You can improve how the hair feels and handles, reduce the friction and heat that cause further breakage, and trim damaged ends if needed. The most useful first steps are to use hot tools less often, keep hair fully dry before straightening or curling, and handle it according to its texture.
Can heat-damaged hair be repaired?
Heat can damage the hair shaft, particularly its outer cuticle. Repeated damage may leave lengths dry, rough, brittle, split, or more likely to break. This is damage to hair that has already grown out of the scalp; it is different from hair loss at the follicle.

Care may improve the feel and manageability of damaged lengths, but the cited evidence does not establish that a consumer product can biologically restore them. A 2025 laboratory study created a heat-damaged hair model and measured changes in hair fibers and products; it was not a clinical trial showing that a product restores damaged hair (Establishment of Heat-Damaged Model for Hair). Treat “repair” claims cautiously unless they are backed by product-specific evidence. Trimming is the direct way to remove damaged length when split or brittle ends keep catching and breaking.
How to stop breakage after using a straightener
- Pause or reduce hot-tool use. Give hair time away from straighteners and curling irons, and avoid repeating passes over the same section. The American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD) advises using flat irons on dry hair at a low or medium setting, no more often than every other day. It recommends leaving curling irons in place for only a second or two (AAD: Hair styling without damage).
- Make sure hair is fully dry before ironing. Do not use a flat iron or curling iron on wet or damp hair. A clinical case report links high heat applied to wet hair with bubble-like defects inside the hair shaft and brittle breakage. Case literature supports caution but does not establish how often this happens in the general population (Bubble Hair and Other Acquired Hair Shaft Anomalies due to Hot Ironing on Wet Hair).
- Reduce friction while detangling. Avoid forceful brushing or repeated combing through knots. AAD guidance is texture-specific: most people should handle wet hair as little as possible because it breaks more easily when brushed or combed; people with tightly curled or textured hair should brush wet hair to reduce breakage. A 2026 narrative review also describes variation in how Afro-textured hair responds to thermal styling, so avoid assuming one handling routine suits everyone (Afro-textured hair care: a narrative review and recommendations for dermatologists).
- Trim ends if the damaged length continues to split or catch. Trimming removes that portion of the shaft; it does not reverse damage elsewhere or change how new hair grows.
Should you air-dry or blow-dry damaged hair?
Neither method is universally safest. AAD advises letting hair partially air-dry before styling or combing and decreasing blow-drying frequency. However, one laboratory experiment found trade-offs under its specific conditions, not a rule that applies to every head of hair or dryer.

In a 2011 experiment, Yoonhee Lee and colleagues shampooed and dried hair tresses repeatedly for 30 cycles. Visible surface damage increased as dryer temperature rose. In that protocol, drying at 15 cm for 60 seconds, with measured hair temperature of 47°C and continuous dryer motion, caused less damage than natural drying; closer, hotter conditions produced greater cuticle lifting and cracking. The researchers also observed cell-membrane-complex damage only in the naturally dried group. These are experimental conditions, not consumer safety thresholds or proof that blow-drying is always safer than air-drying (Lee et al., Hair Shaft Damage from Heat and Drying Time of Hair Dryer).
How to prevent heat damage when blow-drying
- Use a dryer with adjustable heat settings so you can choose less heat; the cited evidence does not compare commercial dryer models or establish that a particular product prevents damage.
- Blow-dry less often and allow hair to partially air-dry before styling, as the AAD advises.
- Keep the dryer moving rather than holding it close to one section. The laboratory study’s results varied with distance, temperature, and exposure time, but its figures should not be treated as universal settings for home use.
- Limit extra combing and brushing, especially when hair is wet, while following the texture-specific handling guidance above.
- Do not treat heat protectants, oils, masks, conditioners, or bond-building products as proven cures for existing heat damage on the basis of the cited studies.
When breakage may need a dermatologist’s attention
Consider an appointment with a board-certified dermatologist if breakage persists despite gentler handling, if loss is patchy, or if you have scalp symptoms or are unsure whether the problem is damaged lengths rather than hair loss. The AAD recommends seeing a board-certified dermatologist for hair-care questions or concerns.
