Do not pull out a feather that is sticking through a pinprick. A large tear, worn shell, or damaged down chamber needs a manufacturer or specialist assessment. Instructions from jacket and sleeping-bag makers are useful, but they are not validated for every blanket fabric.
First, decide whether the blanket needs a patch
A feather tip or pinprick
If a feather is poking through but there is no clear slit or hole, do not pull it out. Patagonia advises working emerging feathers back inside, and Rab likewise recommends guiding exposed down inward rather than enlarging the opening. Rab notes that small holes leaking individual feathers may not need a repair. Avoid forcing the feather through the fabric; if it will not go back easily or the opening grows, stop and reassess. A visible tear or hole
If down is escaping through a distinct tear, contain it inside the chamber and patch the shell only if the surrounding fabric is sound. A long tear, brittle or thinning fabric, damage at a seam, or a compromised baffle can call for professional repair rather than a surface patch alone.

How to patch a small tear
- Return loose down to the chamber. Gently guide it inward without tugging or stretching the hole. For a larger opening, keep the blanket contained while you work so down does not escape further.
- Prepare the shell. Clean the area around the tear and let it dry completely. Cleaning methods differ by product: Patagonia’s jacket method recommends isopropyl alcohol, while Decathlon and Norrøna describe water or a damp cloth. Use the instructions for the chosen patch and the blanket’s care guidance; do not assume a cleaner recommended for one shell is suitable for another.
- Choose a compatible patch and size it to overlap. Use a patch intended for the blanket’s shell textile. Patagonia’s jacket guide specifies at least 1/4 inch of overlap on each side; Decathlon advises 1 cm around the tear for its listed patches. These are instructions for particular products and methods, not a universal standard. If cutting a patch, rounded edges can help avoid corners lifting. Avoid crossing a seam where practical.
- Apply and smooth the patch. Center it over the damage and press from the middle outward to smooth bubbles and secure the edges. Follow the patch maker’s pressure, heat, and setting directions. Patagonia and Norrøna describe optional gentle heat for their specified patch methods; that does not mean heat is safe for every blanket shell or adhesive.
- Inspect before using the blanket. Check that patch edges are attached and down is no longer escaping. If the patch lifts, the tear spreads, or a chamber appears damaged, ask the manufacturer or a qualified repair service about next steps.
When a professional repair is the better choice
A patch covers shell fabric; it does not by itself repair a damaged baffle or restore the blanket’s original construction. Seek the blanket maker or a specialist if the tear is large, the surrounding shell is worn or thin, or the damage reaches a seam or down chamber. Rab describes service-center repair after temporary field patching, Norrøna recommends sending larger or worn damage to its repair team, and Nordisk lists textile-hole repairs and down-chamber exchange among its services. These examples do not establish that any particular service will accept an unspecified blanket.

Check the blanket manufacturer’s repair and warranty options before making a permanent repair, especially if the blanket is still covered. Therm-a-Rest’s Ramble Down Blanket page provides product care information, but it does not supply a tear-repair method that applies to all down blankets.

Follow both the blanket’s care label and the patch maker’s setting and washing instructions. Patagonia says to wait at least 24 hours before washing its specified repair-tape patch; that wait is not a general rule for every patch or blanket. Do not wash or apply heat until you have checked the directions for the materials in your repair.
