You can patch a small tear in many Patagonia down or synthetic-fabric jackets with fabric repair tape. Start with a clean, dry jacket, use tape compatible with the garment’s fabric, and extend the patch at least 1/4 inch beyond the tear on every side. Adhesive tape is not suitable for every Patagonia garment, so check the fabric and care instructions first.
Check the tear and fabric before you start
This DIY method is for a small surface tear or hole that a simple patch can cover. Patagonia recommends repair tape for small holes in down and synthetic-insulated jackets; its guidance also describes tape for synthetic fabrics such as waterproof shells. It warns that gear repair tape will not stick to natural or stretchy fabrics. If you are unsure what the shell is made of, check the garment label and care instructions before using adhesive.

Consider professional help if the tear is large, lies near a seam or closure, or needs a less visible or more durable finish. Patagonia does not set a universal tear-length cutoff for deciding when a home patch is appropriate.

- Fabric repair tape, such as Gear Aid Tenacious Tape, or a compatible ready-made patch. Patagonia’s Worn Wear Repair Patch kit is another option; its U.S. product page describes four Tenacious Tape patches for jacket and gear tears. Availability and price can change.
- Isopropyl alcohol to clean the area.
- Scissors to trim loose threads and shape the patch.
- A hard plastic card for smoothing the patch, if useful.
- A warm—not hot—iron, only if you choose to use gentle warmth to help the adhesive adhere.
How to patch the tear
- Make sure the jacket is dry. Inspect the damage and trim dangling threads. If feathers are coming through a down jacket, do not pull them out. Patagonia’s May 5, 2026 repair guide says, “Don’t pull out any of the feathers that emerge.” Work them back into the garment instead.
- Clean the fabric. Wipe around the tear with isopropyl alcohol to remove dirt, grit, or oil. Let the alcohol evaporate fully before applying the patch.
- Cut the patch to size. Choose compatible repair tape and cut a piece that extends at least 1/4 inch beyond the damaged area on every side. Round the corners to help reduce snagging and peeling.
- Apply the patch. Peel off the backing without touching the adhesive. Center the patch over the tear, then press from the middle outward to push out air bubbles. Smooth it with your fingers or a hard plastic card.
- Use gentle warmth only if needed. Patagonia says hand warmth or a warm, not hot, iron may help the adhesive adhere. Avoid excessive heat, especially on synthetic fabric.
- Let the adhesive set before washing. The jacket can be worn after application, but wait at least 24 hours before washing it.
When to use Patagonia’s repair service
If tape is incompatible with the fabric or the damage is beyond a simple patch, ask Patagonia or a repair professional to assess it. Patagonia’s U.S. Product Repair Form says repair work is covered in most cases and lists $15 round-trip shipping for U.S. mail-in repairs. Check the current intake process and cost for your region before sending anything; these details may change. Patagonia Europe also provides repair information and DIY tutorials.
