Repair grub-damaged turf in two separate decisions: first prove that grubs caused the injury, then restore the grass with seed or sod. Brown turf alone is not proof of a grub infestation. Inspect the root zone, remove dead material, re-establish firm soil contact, and time watering and mowing for your local growing conditions. Use insecticide only when sampling and local guidance support it, and follow the current product label.
Confirm that grubs caused the damage
White grubs are the larvae of several beetles. They feed below the surface, severing grass roots so the sod becomes thin, brown and loose. The same appearance can result from drought, irrigation failure, disease, soil compaction, moles or other insects. Treating without checking can waste money, harm beneficial organisms and leave the real problem unresolved.

Recognize the pattern, but do not diagnose from color alone
- Damage often appears as irregular brown or thinning patches rather than a uniform change across the lawn.
- Affected sod may lift easily because roots have been eaten. Birds, skunks or other animals digging for larvae can add disturbed soil.
- Timing varies by species and climate. Illinois Extension reports that damage in its region is often visible from mid-August into early October; that calendar should not be exported to other regions.
- Drought-stressed or compacted turf can look similar, so inspect before purchasing grub control.
Inspect and count grubs
- Choose the edge of a damaged patch, where living and dead turf meet. Sampling only the worst-looking spot can overstate the infestation.
- With a spade or knife, cut and lift a small square of sod deep enough to expose the root zone. Examine the soil and roots for cream-colored, C-shaped larvae with brown heads.
- Sample more than one location when the pattern is widespread or irregular. Georgia Extension guidance likewise emphasizes sampling multiple one-square-foot areas rather than relying on one observation.
- Count the larvae in each sampled area and record where you found them. Replace the sod, firm it back into place and water it so the inspection does not create a new dry spot.
Illinois Extension gives about 12 grubs per square foot as a typical damage threshold in its regional guidance. It is a rule of thumb, not a universal trigger: acceptable numbers change with turf species, lawn health, irrigation, grub species and local recommendations. A healthy, well-watered lawn can tolerate more feeding than stressed turf. If you find no grubs, do not apply grub insecticide solely because the lawn is brown; investigate water, soil, disease and other pest causes instead.

When existing turf can be saved
If living grass remains throughout a thin area and roots are still attached, overseeding can fill gaps without removing the entire surface. Rake out loose debris, expose soil between surviving plants and sow a compatible grass blend. Expect the result to be gradual because the established plants and new seedlings will mature at different rates.

When a complete repair is more practical
Use full reseeding or sod when a patch is dead, lifts with little resistance, or has been torn up by animals searching for larvae. If damage covers a substantial portion of the lawn, treat the project as renovation: prepare the surface consistently, choose one region-appropriate grass mixture, and plan irrigation for the entire area. University of Maryland Extension uses about 50% weeds as a point at which to consider overhauling a poor-quality lawn generally; that figure is not a grub-specific threshold.
There is no research-supported acreage cutoff that universally determines when sod is better than seed. Base the choice on the percentage of surviving turf, local establishment season, water access, grass-type compatibility, budget and how quickly you need a finished surface.
Reseeding versus resodding
| Choice | Best fit | What you must plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Reseed or overseed | Sparse areas, bare patches and larger renovations when weather supports germination | Region-appropriate seed blend, clean seed-to-soil contact, correct season, reliable watering and several weeks or more for establishment |
| Replace with sod | Dead or badly disturbed areas where immediate cover is valuable | Sod availability and cost, compatibility with existing grass, level soil, tight sod-to-soil contact and frequent watering while roots knit |
Seed is usually more flexible for irregular shapes and large areas, while sod gives erosion protection and a usable-looking surface sooner. Sod is not maintenance-free: roots still need to grow into the prepared soil, and hot, dry weather increases watering demands and slows establishment. Whichever route you choose, match the species and cultivar to your region, sun exposure, drainage and the grass already in the lawn. A mismatched patch can remain visibly different even after it fills in.

Repair the damaged area step by step
1. Mark the repair and remove dead material
Outline the damaged section and include a small margin of weak turf so the new grass does not stop at a sharp boundary. Rake away dead, matted blades and thatch until you can see reasonably firm soil. Maryland Extension recommends clearing debris, leveling uneven ground and preparing damaged areas as you would for a new lawn. Do not bury a thick layer of dead grass under seed or sod; it prevents roots from contacting soil and can hold excess moisture against the crown.

2. Level and prepare the soil
Fill shallow depressions and shave down raised spots so water will not pool or run off. Use screened topsoil or compost only where needed to level or improve contact; neither is automatically required after grub damage. A soil test can identify pH or nutrient issues before you add amendments. Avoid making a heavy fertilizer application by default, because excess nutrients can encourage weak, fast growth and runoff.
Break up compacted surface soil lightly, then rake it smooth. The finished surface should be firm enough that a footprint is shallow but loose enough in the upper layer for roots or seed to enter. Remove stones, roots and clods that would leave air gaps beneath sod or prevent seed from touching soil.
3. Sow grass seed for bare patches
- Select a region-appropriate lawn seed or blend that matches the existing turf and the site’s sun, shade and moisture. Do not assume a single national mixture suits every climate.
- Spread seed evenly in two directions at the rate on the seed label. Applying more than the label rate can produce crowded seedlings that compete for water and nutrients.
- Rake very lightly or use another method recommended for the species to place seed in contact with the surface. Covering seed too deeply reduces emergence.
- Firm the area with a roller or gentle hand pressure if needed. The objective is contact, not compaction.
- Water according to the seed instructions, keeping the upper soil consistently moist during germination. As seedlings develop roots, lengthen the interval and increase the depth of watering rather than leaving the surface constantly saturated.
Keep foot traffic and pets off newly seeded soil when possible. Mow only after seedlings have reached the height recommended for that grass, and remove no more than the permitted fraction of leaf height at one mowing.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems4. Lay and establish sod
- Have the soil prepared before the sod arrives. Freshly cut sod dries quickly, so avoid leaving rolls in sun or wind.
- Lay pieces with edges tightly joined and stagger the seams. Do not stretch strips or overlap them.
- Press or roll the sod so roots contact the soil across the entire piece. Air pockets cause dry patches and delay rooting.
- Water immediately and thoroughly enough to wet the soil beneath the sod. Check beneath a corner to confirm that moisture has reached the root zone rather than merely wetting leaves.
- Continue frequent watering while roots establish, adjusting for temperature, wind, rainfall and drainage. Reduce frequency gradually as the sod resists a gentle lift.
Avoid concentrated traffic until the sod is rooted. Mow with a sharp blade at the height appropriate for the grass once the surface is anchored; scalping newly laid sod can expose crowns and increase water stress.

Choose the right season for your location
| Situation | Guidance | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Seeding a new lawn or major repair | Late summer to early fall is generally the most favorable period in Penn State Extension guidance. | Exact dates depend on local temperatures, rainfall, grass species and first-frost timing. |
| Significant damage in northern Illinois | University of Illinois Extension targets August 15–September 15 for renovation. | This window is regional, not a universal calendar for every state or climate. |
| Laying sod outside the prime seed season | Sod can be installed at more times of year when irrigation water is available. | Hot, dry weather requires more frequent watering and generally lengthens establishment. |
Nancy Kreith, a University of Illinois Extension horticulture educator, states: “Sparse areas can be re-seeded; however, the target date for lawn renovation tasks in northern Illinois is between Aug. 15 and Sept. 15 to ensure fall establishment before winter.” The northern Illinois qualification is essential. In warm-season regions, the best window may be tied to warm soil and active summer growth rather than a northern cool-season calendar.
Separate turf repair from grub-control timing
Repairing dead grass and deciding whether to kill grubs are related but different tasks. New seed or sod cannot restore roots that larvae are still eating, yet an insecticide is not justified on every brown lawn. First use the inspection results, turf condition and local Cooperative Extension advice to determine whether control is warranted.
Preventive and curative products are not interchangeable
Wisconsin Extension notes that preventive and curative products have different uses and that timing varies by grub species. Preventive products generally perform best when larvae are small, while curative treatments target an existing population and may have narrower timing or watering requirements. New Hampshire Extension likewise notes that active ingredients differ in when they work during the grub life cycle.
Before applying any product, read the current label for your state or country. Confirm the permitted turf sites, application rate, personal-protection requirements, restrictions near water, required watering-in and re-entry interval. A label instruction to water a product into the soil is not optional; surface applications may fail and can increase runoff risk. Product registrations and directions can change, so an old calendar or an online recommendation may be obsolete.

Protect pollinators and avoid blanket treatment
Some grub-control ingredients and application methods raise pollinator or environmental concerns. Wisconsin Extension includes pollinator considerations in its management guidance. Do not spray flowering weeds or blooming plants, and follow label language about bees, beneficial insects and drainage. Treat only the area and rate supported by sampling and the label rather than applying a lawn-wide product “just in case.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Water, mow and monitor the repaired lawn
Water for roots, not just appearance
Seedlings need a consistently moist germination layer; sod needs moisture through the piece and into the underlying soil. Weather, soil texture, slope and irrigation-system output determine the actual schedule. Check moisture by hand below the surface instead of relying on a fixed number of minutes. Reduce irrigation as roots deepen, but do not allow newly established grass to wilt repeatedly.
Mow conservatively
Wait until seeded grass or sod is anchored and tall enough for the species-specific mowing height. Use a sharp blade and remove only the recommended fraction of leaf tissue. Mowing too early pulls up sod and disturbs seedlings; mowing too short increases heat and drought stress and can make the repaired area vulnerable to another decline.

Inspect the repaired and surrounding turf periodically. If fresh patches loosen, sample again before applying anything. A second infestation, drought, disease or compaction may be responsible. Also look for conditions that weakened the lawn before the grub injury, such as poor irrigation coverage, chronic traffic, shade or drainage problems. Correcting those conditions improves the odds that replacement grass will persist.

Troubleshoot common repair failures
The new seed did not emerge
- Check whether seed was buried too deeply or washed into piles by rain.
- Confirm that the surface stayed moist during germination without becoming waterlogged.
- Look for crusted or compacted soil that prevented contact and root penetration.
- Verify that the seed mixture suits the season and local temperature.
Reseed thin spots only after correcting the cause; repeatedly adding seed to a dry or compacted surface will not solve the problem.
Sod has brown seams or lifts easily
- Inspect beneath a piece for air gaps or dry soil.
- Improve contact by pressing the sod firmly and watering the root zone.
- Check sprinkler coverage, especially along edges and slopes.
- Limit traffic until roots have grown into the soil.
Brown patches continue to expand
Sample the advancing edge again. If grubs are absent, investigate irrigation, disease, compaction and other pests instead of escalating insecticide use. If grubs are present at a locally meaningful level, obtain location-specific control advice and follow the current label, including any watering-in requirement.
Supplies that match the repair
The basic materials depend on your chosen method:
- Grass seed for bare patches: use a blend suited to your region and the existing lawn.
- Sod for damaged turf: choose compatible grass and arrange delivery for immediate installation.
- Garden rake: rake away dead grass and loosen matted debris without stripping stable soil.
- Topsoil or compost: use only where needed to level or improve the planting surface, preferably guided by a soil test.
- Measuring and watering equipment: a spade for sampling, a way to measure square-foot areas and irrigation that can wet the repair evenly.
None of these items replaces diagnosis. Buy seed, sod or amendments after deciding what the inspection and site conditions require.
When to call for local help
Contact your county or regional Cooperative Extension when you cannot identify the larvae, the lawn contains several grass species, damage spans most of the property, or pesticide rules are unclear. Extension thresholds and timing are written for particular climates and turf systems, so local advice is more reliable than a generic national calendar. A licensed lawn professional can also help interpret a soil test, map irrigation coverage and select a legal treatment when sampling demonstrates a need.
