Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo export a browser mockup as an image, you can serialize a copy of its HTML into an SVG <foreignObject>, load that SVG as an image, and draw it onto a canvas. That is different from a DOM-reconstruction library such as html2canvas, which reads the DOM and styles and redraws what it supports. Neither route is a guaranteed pixel-perfect capture: fonts, images, browser behavior, CSS support, and origin restrictions all affect the result.
What “DOM-to-image” means—and why the name can mislead
There is no standard canvas operation that simply paints an arbitrary live DOM node into a 2D canvas. The browser canvas API draws images and other supported sources; HTML elements are not themselves a direct drawImage() input. MDN’s guide puts it plainly: “You can’t just draw HTML into a canvas.” Its documented route is to put well-formed HTML inside an SVG <foreignObject>, load the SVG as an image, and then draw that image into a canvas. MDN’s DOM-to-canvas guide describes that process.

The term “DOM-to-image” can also describe a library’s job, not a single browser primitive. The dom-to-image project documents a pipeline that clones the target subtree, recursively copies computed styles, recreates pseudo-elements, embeds fonts and image assets, and serializes the result as SVG. For raster output, the SVG can then be loaded and rendered to an off-screen canvas. It automates considerable preparation, but resource loading and browser security rules still apply.

Two browser-side approaches, with different fidelity questions
| Question | DOM reconstruction: html2canvas | SVG foreignObject: dom-to-image pattern |
|---|---|---|
| How are pixels produced? | Reads DOM and style information, then builds a canvas representation. | Clones and serializes HTML inside SVG <foreignObject>; the SVG is rendered as an image and can be drawn onto canvas. |
| What controls visual fidelity? | Whether html2canvas implements the CSS features used by the mockup. Its documentation says it does not take a literal screenshot and may not match the browser’s rendered page exactly. | Whether the target browser renders the embedded HTML and SVG as needed, and whether the pipeline can include the required resources. |
| What about external assets? | External images may require a proxy or same-origin access; cross-origin iframes cannot be read. | The documented library embeds fonts, images, and background images, but fetching and inlining resources can still be constrained. Tainted canvas content is also a limitation noted by the project. |
| What can the library return? | A promise that resolves to a canvas, which can be used further or encoded. | The library can produce SVG or raster output; drawing the SVG image to canvas supplies pixels for PNG-style output. |
| How should support be judged? | The current project documentation lists evergreen Firefox, Chrome/Chromium, and Safari, while noting that CSS support depends on what the library implements. | The dom-to-image README’s browser notes include historical, version-specific testing and project-specific IE/Safari restrictions. These are not universal claims about every browser or fork. |
See the html2canvas documentation and its project repository for the library’s architecture and browser notes. The practical choice is not “which one takes a real screenshot?” Neither is a browser screenshot API. Instead, ask whether you prefer a library that reconstructs supported CSS, or an SVG-based pipeline whose embedded HTML is rendered as part of an SVG image—and test the mockup’s actual features in your target browsers.

How the SVG foreignObject export works
- Choose the target subtree and its dimensions. The export needs a defined region and matching SVG dimensions so the final image has the intended bounds.
- Prepare a self-contained representation. A pipeline such as dom-to-image clones the subtree, copies computed styles recursively, and recreates pseudo-elements, which ordinary DOM cloning does not automatically preserve.
- Include fonts and image resources. The project documents finding web fonts and embedding them as data URLs, along with images and CSS background images. This is a resource-fetching step, not a guarantee that every remote URL will be accessible or embeddable.
- Serialize the HTML into SVG. The HTML must be well-formed for the SVG
<foreignObject>content. The SVG becomes an image representation of the prepared subtree. - Load the SVG and draw it to canvas. Once the SVG image is available, draw it into a canvas at the chosen dimensions. Canvas output can be encoded as a data URL or blob, subject to origin-clean restrictions.
This is a staged conversion, not a direct DOM-to-canvas call. Failure at any stage—style cloning, asset fetching, SVG rendering, or canvas export—can change the result or prevent an export.
Why assets and origin policy often decide whether export succeeds
Fonts and CSS backgrounds
A cloned element may look different if its web font has not loaded or cannot be fetched and embedded. Likewise, a background image is a resource just like an <img>. Check that the export pipeline includes the same font files, image sources, and background images the visible mockup relies on. The dom-to-image project describes embedding these resources as part of its process; it does not promise that every remote asset can be fetched.

Cross-origin images and iframes
Browser origin rules can block reading pixels from content loaded from another origin. The html2canvas proxy documentation explains its same-origin and proxy constraints for images and notes that cross-origin iframe contents cannot be read. A proxy may help with eligible external images, but it does not make arbitrary cross-origin page content readable.

Tainted canvases
If cross-origin content is drawn without the required permissions, the canvas may become tainted: it can still display pixels, but the browser restricts reading or exporting them. The dom-to-image README also warns about tainted canvas elements. Therefore, a render that appears visually successful is not necessarily exportable as a PNG or data URL.

How to choose and validate a pipeline
- Choose DOM reconstruction when html2canvas’s implemented CSS features fit the mockup and you want its canvas-oriented output. Treat the result as a rendering approximation, not a literal capture.
- Choose the foreignObject route when an SVG containing HTML fits your browser targets and resource-handling needs. It still requires browser and CSS testing; its mechanism does not guarantee universal fidelity.
- Test the real export path. Include the actual fonts, images, pseudo-elements, backgrounds, and styling used in the mockup. Confirm both that the output looks right and that the canvas can be exported.
- Verify supported browsers by library and version. The html2canvas project lists evergreen browsers but also documents CSS-property limits. The dom-to-image README’s notes are specific to that project and its stated testing history; do not treat them as current compatibility guarantees for all implementations.
If browser-only export cannot meet the fidelity, origin, or browser requirements, a different rendering architecture may be needed. The evidence here does not establish a universally best method or a performance winner.
