You can rename WordPress’s Uncategorized category from Posts → Categories. Edit the category’s name and save it. The slug is separate: leave it unchanged if you only want to change the label, or edit it when you intentionally want to change the category archive URL.
Rename “Uncategorized” from the Categories screen
- Sign in to your WordPress administration dashboard.
- Open Posts → Categories.
- Find Uncategorized in the category list.
- Choose Quick Edit for an inline change, or choose Edit to open the full category screen.
- Enter the new category name. Category names must be unique.
- Review the Slug field separately.
- Save the change with Update Category (or the equivalent update control shown on your screen).
The visible name changes immediately wherever WordPress displays that category. WordPress’s official Categories screen documentation notes that “The Category slug must be unique.”
Name, slug, and category base are different settings
Category name
The name is the human-readable label visitors and editors see, such as “News,” “General,” or “Articles.” Changing only this field does not, by itself, change the category archive path.
Category slug
The slug is the URL-friendly value used in the category archive URL. For example, a category may display as “Articles” while retaining an older slug such as uncategorized. Change the slug only if you want that URL value to change. Because slugs must be unique, WordPress may require a different value if the intended slug is already in use.

Category base
The site-wide prefix before category slugs is controlled separately under Settings → Permalinks. Changing the category base affects the structure of category archive URLs across the site; it is not part of renaming one category.
Should you change the slug?

If the category already has links in search results, menus, internal links, or external sites, treat a slug change as a URL migration. WordPress documentation explains how slugs and the category base form category URLs, but redirect behavior depends on your site’s configuration. Check your redirect and SEO setup rather than assuming an old URL will redirect automatically.

Change which category WordPress assigns by default
Renaming the category does not change its role as the default post category. WordPress assigns the selected default category when a post is saved without another category selected.
- Open Settings → Writing.
- Find the Default Post Category setting.
- Select the category you want WordPress to use for posts with no other category.
- Save the writing settings.
This is the setting to change if your goal is to stop new, uncategorized posts from receiving the renamed category. Existing posts are not automatically reorganized simply because you select a different default.

Can you delete the Uncategorized category?
WordPress will not let you delete the category while it remains the default. Select a different default under Settings → Writing first. When a category is deleted, posts assigned to it are reassigned to the default category, so review the effect before deleting it.

The name will not save
- Check that the new category name is not already in use.
- Confirm that you clicked the category update control, not only navigated away from the page.
- Refresh the category list and clear any page or caching layer if the old label still appears.
The URL did not change
You changed the name but left the slug unchanged. Edit the category again and change the slug if a different archive URL is required.

You cannot delete the category
It is still selected as the default post category. Choose another default under Settings → Writing, save, and then return to Posts → Categories.
Old category links return an error after a slug change
The archive path changed. Review your redirect or SEO configuration and add an appropriate redirect from the old path when necessary; WordPress does not guarantee the same redirect behavior on every installation.

The Bottom Line
Use Posts → Categories to rename the label. Keep the slug if you want the existing URL, change it only for an intentional URL change, and use Settings → Writing to select a different default category.
