How to remove your phone number from a Google Account without losing access

Yes, you can remove a phone number from your Google Account without deleting the account. Before deleting it, verify that your password works and that you have another reliable way to prove ownership, such as a recovery email, saved backup codes, a passkey, a trusted signed-in device or a security key. Then open Personal info > Phone, select the number, choose Delete phone number and confirm Remove number.

That change removes the number from the account profile only. Google says phone settings are shared by only some services, so you must separately check 2-Step Verification and products such as Calendar, Chrome, Google Pay and Google Business before assuming the number has disappeared everywhere.

What removing the number actually changes

A Google Account can contain a phone number in more than one context. The number shown under Personal info > Phone is the account-profile number. It may be used for account communication, sign-in assistance or recovery, but deleting it from that page does not delete Gmail, Drive, Photos or the Google Account itself.

Google documents that changing a number in the main account settings affects only some Google services. A number can remain configured for 2-Step Verification or for an individual product. Treat the profile deletion as the first step, then audit every security and service setting that could still hold the number.

Prepare a replacement way to prove ownership

Removing the only working verification method while you are signed in can leave you unable to pass a future security check. Complete these checks before touching the phone setting.

Test the password on a trusted device

Open a Google sign-in page on a computer or phone you normally use, sign out if practical, and confirm that the current password is accepted. Do not rely on a password saved in a browser if you cannot type it yourself. If you have forgotten it, change or recover the password while the phone is still available.

Add a recovery email you actively monitor

Use an address that you check regularly and that is different from the address you use to sign in to the Google Account. Confirm that you can receive a message there before removing the number. A recovery email gives you a route that does not depend on the old SIM or mobile carrier.

Keep a non-SMS sign-in method ready

If 2-Step Verification is enabled, save the account’s backup codes somewhere offline and confirm that at least one code is still unused. You can also keep a passkey, another device that is already signed in, or a hardware security key available. Google lists these options as ownership checks when a phone is lost.

  • Backup codes: useful when the old SIM is unavailable, but they must be generated and stored before an emergency.
  • Passkey or trusted device: convenient when it is already configured and remains in your possession.
  • Hardware security key: a physical FIDO key that can provide a second step without a cellular signal; choose a connector compatible with your computers and phones.
  • Recovery email: a separate channel for account recovery, provided you can access that mailbox.

Use at least one replacement method successfully before deleting the number. A phone number that is still receiving codes is valuable during this setup stage.

Remove the number from a computer

The desktop path is the clearest because it exposes the complete account navigation and the final confirmation.

  1. Sign in to the Google Account you want to change.
  2. Open Personal info in the account settings.
  3. Select Phone.
  4. Select the phone number listed on that page.
  5. Choose Delete phone number. Depending on the interface, this appears beside a trash-can or delete icon.
  6. Choose Remove number and complete any identity prompt.
  7. Return to the Phone page and confirm that the number is no longer listed.

If Google asks you to sign in again, use the password and replacement verification method you tested earlier. Do not close the session until the confirmation has completed.

Remove it on Android

Android provides the same account controls through the device’s Google settings.

  1. Open Settings on the Android device.
  2. Tap Google, then tap your profile name or picture.
  3. Choose Manage your Google Account.
  4. Open Personal info, then Phone.
  5. Select the number, tap the delete or trash icon, choose Delete phone number, then confirm Remove number.

Android also exposes a recovery-phone control under Security > Recovery phone. Check that area after editing Personal info. If the number is still displayed there, remove or replace it from that security page as well, provided another recovery method is already working.

Remove it on iPhone or iPad

On an Apple device, you can use the Gmail app or a browser.

  3. Open Personal info > Phone.
  4. Select the number, choose Delete phone number, and confirm Remove number.

If Gmail is not installed, open myaccount.google.com in Safari or another browser and follow the same Personal info > Phone path. The account, rather than the device brand, determines which number is being changed.

Check 2-Step Verification separately

Deleting the profile number does not guarantee that SMS or voice verification has been removed from 2-Step Verification. Open the account’s Security section and review the 2-Step Verification settings.

When the number is a 2-Step Verification method

Look for a phone number under the methods used to complete the second step. Remove that method only after confirming a replacement, such as an authenticator-based prompt, passkey, backup codes, another signed-in device or a security key. If you delete the profile number but leave it as an active 2-Step Verification method, Google may still offer it for codes.

When you want to keep SMS temporarily

You can leave the 2-Step Verification number in place while testing another method, then remove it later from the 2-Step Verification page. This staged approach is safer than deleting every phone reference in one session, especially for an account used for work or financial services.

Audit services that can retain a phone number

Google says phone-related settings can require separate changes in individual products. After the account-level deletion, inspect the products you use:

  • Chrome: check profile or autofill information if the number appears as saved personal data.
  • Google Pay: review payment-profile contact details and any verification number separately.
  • Google Business: check the business profile’s public or administrator contact number; it is not automatically the same as the account-profile field.
  • Other Google products: open each product’s account, security or contact settings and remove the number where it remains.

Service-specific removal can change how that product contacts you. Deleting a number from the account profile is not a promise that every historical, billing or public contact record has been erased.

Timing and security cautions

Allow for verification delays

Google says a new or changed recovery number may take up to seven days to become usable for sensitive actions such as password changes. During that window, do not assume that a newly added number will immediately rescue an account. Keep your old, working ownership methods available until the change is effective.

Do not use Google Voice as the sole recovery phone

Google’s account guidance states: Tip: Do not use a Google Voice number as a recovery phone number. If you do, you could lock yourself out of your account. Use a recovery method that you can independently access if the Google Account itself is unavailable.

Understand what deletion cannot undo

Removing a number stops its use in the setting you changed, but it does not revoke access to a phone that is already signed in, erase messages previously sent to that number, or remove the number from third-party websites where you used it. Those changes must be made with each outside service.

Choosing a replacement method

No single option is best for every account. Consider whether you can reach it without the old SIM, whether it is already configured, and how well it resists phishing.

Method Works without the old SIM? What you must have Important limitation
Recovery email Yes Access to a separate mailbox The mailbox itself must remain secure and available.
Backup codes Yes Codes generated and stored before removal Each code is single-use; losing the list removes this fallback.
Passkey Usually, if the passkey device is available A configured phone, computer or password manager that supports the passkey A lost or reset passkey device can remove the convenience.
Signed-in device Often An existing trusted session that Google accepts It may be unavailable after a device reset, sign-out or theft.
Hardware security key Yes The physical key and a compatible port or wireless connection You need the key whenever Google requests it; keep a spare if the account is critical.
SMS or voice number No, unless the same number remains active Access to the carrier account and handset It depends on cellular service and is vulnerable to loss of the SIM or number.

Passkeys and hardware security keys are designed to resist phishing more strongly than SMS, but Google’s cited guidance does not assign them a numerical security rating. Choose based on the devices you can reliably keep available.

Troubleshooting common problems

The delete option is missing

Make sure you selected the number itself rather than only opening the Phone overview. Try the account page in a desktop browser or the direct account settings site instead of an embedded app view. If the number is controlled by a service-specific security page, remove it there rather than from Personal info.

Google requests a code sent to the number

Use a backup code, passkey, trusted signed-in device or security key if Google offers one. If no alternative appears, keep the number active and add a recovery email or another method first. Repeatedly entering failed codes can trigger additional verification challenges.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The number still appears after deletion

Check both Security > Recovery phone and the 2-Step Verification methods. Then inspect products such as Calendar, Chrome, Google Pay and Google Business. A remaining entry usually means a separate service setting was not changed, not that the account deletion failed.

You removed the number and now cannot sign in

Use the recovery email, backup code, passkey, trusted device or security key you prepared. If a newly changed recovery method is involved, remember that Google may take up to seven days before allowing it for sensitive actions. Avoid removing additional methods while an account-recovery request is pending.

You no longer control the old phone number

Do not wait for the carrier to recycle or reassign it. Sign in from a trusted device, replace the number with a recovery email and a non-SMS method, remove the old number from Personal info and 2-Step Verification, and audit product-specific settings. Change the Google password if you suspect another person could receive messages sent to the old number.

Final removal checklist

  • The current password was tested on a trusted device.
  • A separate recovery email was added and confirmed.
  • Backup codes were generated and stored safely, if 2-Step Verification is enabled.
  • A passkey, trusted signed-in device or hardware security key is available.
  • The number was deleted through Personal info > Phone.
  • Security > Recovery phone no longer lists the unwanted number.
  • 2-Step Verification no longer uses the number, or you intentionally kept it temporarily.
  • Calendar, Chrome, Google Pay, Google Business and other used products were checked separately.
  • You understand that changed recovery information may take up to seven days to work for sensitive actions.

What to do if you only want fewer calls or messages

Deleting a number is not always necessary. If your goal is to stop promotional messages, account alerts or contact suggestions, first identify which Google service is generating them and change that service’s notification or visibility setting. Keep a recovery number only when you are comfortable with its security and still have an independent fallback. If the number belongs to someone else, is recycled, or is no longer under your control, full removal is the safer choice after replacement methods are confirmed.
