The durable fix starts at the source. Ask the website hosting your address, phone number, email, or profile to delete or correct it, then submit separate removal or refresh requests to Google, Bing/Copilot, and ChatGPT. Finally, contact data brokers through the privacy route available in your jurisdiction. Search and AI suppression changes what a service displays; it does not erase the originating webpage or every copy of the data.
What “removal” can and cannot do
AI answers usually assemble information from webpages, search indexes, data-broker records, and other sources. Removing a response in one product does not remove the underlying page, a cached copy, another search engine’s index, or a broker’s record. Treat the work as separate layers:

1. Inventory every place the information appears
Begin with a record of the exposure, not with a mass request. Search your full name together with your city, current and former employers, old addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses. Run the same checks in each service where an AI answer appeared. Look for alternate spellings, initials, middle names, and outdated contact details.

- Save screenshots showing the result, snippet, or AI answer and the date.
- Note which service produced it and the exact wording that exposes the data.
- Record whether the page is a people-search profile, a news or government record, a forum post, a directory, or a page you control.
- Use only the minimum identifying information needed when you submit a request; do not send all your identity documents to an unverified contact.
This inventory lets you distinguish a live source from a cached result or a newly created duplicate. Keep a simple log with the request date, case number, response, and next review date.

2. Remove or correct the originating webpage
Contact the website operator, editor, account owner, or hosting provider that controls the page. Ask for deletion of the page and any cached profile, or for specific fields to be corrected. Include the page URL, the exact personal information at issue, and a concise explanation of why it is inaccurate, unsafe, or no longer necessary. Keep a copy of your request.
This is the only step that removes the information from the originating site. If you own the site, delete the page and return an HTTP 404 or 410 response, or restrict indexing with a noindex directive after the content is gone. Removing text while leaving a publicly accessible copy can allow search services to retain or rediscover it.
A site owner can refuse when the page is a lawful public record, a legitimate journalistic publication, or otherwise protected. Do not assume a search-service decision overrides that refusal; index removal and source deletion are different actions.
3. Request removal from Google Search
Google provides a “Results about you” workflow for monitoring matching contact details and a broader personal-information removal request. The interface labels can change, but the current path starts from a Google result for your name:

- Search for your name and the identifying term that appears on the unwanted page.
- Open the result’s More or About this result controls.
- Choose the personal-information removal reason and identify the specific data, such as a home address, phone number, email address, government identifier, financial-account detail, private record, password, or qualifying doxxing content.
- Submit the requested evidence and a reachable email address, using only information needed to verify the request.
- Use Results about you to monitor matching contact details and review status updates. Add alternate names or contact details when the tool supports them.
An approved request can be global or limited to searches that contain your name. Google may deny a request when the page has substantial public value, including some government, educational, or newspaper pages. Approval hides a qualifying URL from Google results; it does not delete the page, stop another search engine from showing it, or guarantee that an AI system will immediately stop mentioning it.
4. Refresh or block Bing and Copilot results
Bing and Copilot depend heavily on Bing’s index. Microsoft says they can update what appears when a page has been deleted, replaced, or marked non-indexable, but Bing cannot remove content from the internet itself.
When the source page is already fixed
After the owner deletes the page, returns a 404, or adds a noindex directive, submit a Bing content-removal or outdated-content request for the exact URL. The page must be recrawled before the index permanently changes. A stale snippet can remain until that crawl occurs.

When the source owner is still working
Bing’s content-removal process can temporarily block a URL while the permanent source change is completed. Treat that block as an interim measure. If the owner does not delete or alter the page, the content can return when the temporary period ends or when Bing receives a fresh crawl.

After the index changes
Ask Copilot the same question that previously surfaced your details and run a direct Bing search for the old URL, your name, and distinctive text from the page. A changed answer may reflect a refreshed index rather than deletion of the source.
5. Submit a personal-data request for ChatGPT
OpenAI’s personal-data and right-to-be-forgotten process can address personal information that appears in ChatGPT responses under applicable privacy laws. Prepare the request before opening the form:
- Paste the relevant ChatGPT response or provide a clear transcript.
- Identify each personal-data field that is inaccurate, excessive, or unsafe.
- List the external URLs that appear in the answer or that contain the underlying information.
- State the legal or privacy basis for the request and identify the country or region whose law applies.
Approval affects ChatGPT responses. It does not remove the external page, a search-engine result, a data-broker profile, or information held by another AI service. If the answer combines several sources, removing one field may not stop the model from producing a similar answer from a different source; continue the source and index steps for every URL in your inventory.

6. Delete data-broker records
California residents
California residents can use the California Privacy Protection Agency’s DROP platform to send one deletion and sale/share opt-out request to registered data brokers. The system matches your identity across participating brokers, and matched inferences can be personal information subject to deletion. Expect identity verification and legal exemptions; a record may remain when an exemption applies or a broker is outside the program.

Residents elsewhere
Search each broker’s privacy, deletion, or “Do not sell or share” channel. Submit requests individually when no centralized mechanism exists, and check whether your local law grants access, correction, deletion, or opt-out rights. A broker may ask for enough information to locate the record, but provide the minimum necessary and avoid sending unrelated identity documents.
Broker deletion is not permanent if another broker or public source later supplies the same data. Record which brokers confirmed deletion and schedule a later check for reappearance.
7. Verify that the exposure is actually gone
Do not close a case when one result disappears. Recheck the original URL, the exact phrase shown in the AI answer, alternate spellings, old addresses, and phone and email variants. Test Google, Bing, Copilot, and ChatGPT separately because each maintains different indexes and response behavior.
- If the page still loads, the source owner has not completed the durable fix.
- If the page is gone but a search result remains, request a refresh and wait for recrawling.
- If the old URL is gone but a similar profile appears, identify the new source or broker and start a new source-level request.
- If ChatGPT or Copilot still repeats the information, submit the service-specific request with the current response and URLs; an earlier search removal does not automatically update an AI response.
- Retain request IDs, screenshots, and final confirmations so you can demonstrate what was requested and when.
Choosing the right route for common situations

Why requests fail or appear to do nothing
The page was never deleted
Search suppression cannot compensate for a live source. Ask the operator for a written status, verify the URL in a private browser session, and escalate through the host or applicable privacy regulator only when you have a clear legal basis.
The URL changed
A redirect, duplicate profile, printer-friendly page, or mobile URL can preserve the same information under a different address. Add every variant to your inventory and submit the new URL separately.
The result is a public-interest record
Search services may weigh privacy against public value. Explain concrete risks and inaccuracies, but do not misrepresent a public record as a private page. If the underlying record is wrong, pursue correction with the agency, court, publisher, or custodian that created it.
The AI answer cites a different source
Models can combine multiple pages. Compare the answer with each cited or discoverable URL, then correct or remove every material source. A request concerning one response does not create a universal block on your name.

No authoritative cross-platform source publishes a universal approval rate or average completion time. Verification, human review, source-owner action, and recrawling control the schedule. Keep checking rather than assuming that silence means completion.
Privacy and safety while filing requests
- Use the service’s official privacy or removal interface, not an unsolicited email link.
- Send only the fields needed to match the record; redact unrelated document numbers and account information.
- Keep a private log of URLs and case IDs, but do not publish screenshots that expose the same data you are trying to remove.
- For threats, stalking, or doxxing, preserve evidence and contact local law enforcement or a qualified privacy professional in addition to filing platform requests.
- Do not pay anyone who promises guaranteed deletion. Platform and legal decisions can be denied, and no service can erase copies it does not control.
A repeatable removal checklist
- Search your name, locations, employers, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses across the services where you were exposed.
- Log exact URLs, screenshots, answer text, dates, and the producing service.
- Request deletion or correction from every source owner and retain the correspondence.
- Submit Google’s personal-information request and configure Results about you monitoring where available.
- After source changes, request Bing content removal or a refresh and allow for recrawling; retest Copilot.
- Submit ChatGPT’s personal-data request with the response, data fields, URLs, and applicable legal basis.
- Use California DROP if eligible, or each broker’s deletion and sale/share opt-out process elsewhere.
- Recheck alternate URLs and spellings, document outcomes, and repeat the appropriate layer if data reappears.
What a realistic outcome looks like
Success is usually a combination of outcomes: the source page is deleted or corrected, qualifying search results are suppressed, and an AI service stops returning the specified data. Some pages will remain because of public-interest or legal exemptions, and new copies can appear later. Measure progress by the exact URL and response you documented, not by a single search for your name.
