How to remove your home address from people-search sites

To remove your home address from people-search sites, find each profile that lists it, submit that site’s opt-out or “remove my information” request, complete any identity check, and repeat for every site. Then search again periodically: an opt-out hides a broker’s report, but it does not erase the government or other source records feeding that report, and a listing can return when those records change.

The process is free when you do it yourself. California residents also have a free centralized option, DROP, while people facing qualifying safety threats in California may need the separate Safe at Home program. The steps below explain what each option can and cannot accomplish.

What people-search sites can show

The Federal Trade Commission describes people-search sites as a type of data broker. A broker may combine information from other brokers, public social-media posts and government records into a searchable profile. Depending on the site, a report can include your current and former addresses, telephone numbers, relatives and associates, and addresses associated with those people.

Because several sources may be combined, removing one profile does not remove the underlying information everywhere. A county record, court filing or another public source can remain available even after a broker stops displaying it. That distinction is the reason an opt-out is a continuing privacy task rather than a one-time deletion of every record about you.

The repeatable removal process

1. Search for your profiles privately

Start with the major people-search sites. Search your full name together with an identifying detail, such as a current or former address or your telephone number. The FTC recommends using identifying information such as a phone number or address when looking for your listing.

Keep a private tracking list rather than relying on memory. Record the site’s name, the profile URL or other locator, the address or other details shown, the date you found it and the date you submitted a request. Do not publish this list or paste your identifying information into an unrelated form.

  • Search common versions of your name, including a middle initial, a former surname or a common misspelling.
  • Check former addresses and phone numbers as well as your current information; old details can lead to a profile that still contains your home address.
  • Use a private browser window or a device that other people do not share if your searches could expose sensitive information in browser history.

2. Locate the site’s opt-out instructions

Look for links labelled “opt out,” “remove my information,” “privacy,” “privacy choices” or “do not sell or share.” The location and wording differ by company. If the control is difficult to find, search the site’s name together with “opt out” or “remove my information,” as the FTC suggests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read the instructions on the actual site before submitting anything. One site may require the exact profile URL, another may ask you to select the records that belong to you, and another may send a confirmation link by email. Do not assume that a form or procedure used on one site works on another.

3. Submit the request and complete verification

Enter only the information the site’s process requires to match the record. Verification can involve an email address, a phone number, a profile link or additional identifying details. Confirm that the request concerns the profile containing your home address, not a different person with a similar name.

Save the confirmation page, email or request number. If the site offers a choice between suppressing a listing and deleting an account, the people-search profile is usually the item you need to address; do not create an account merely to submit an opt-out unless the site’s instructions require it.

4. Repeat for every site

DIY removal is free and is normally completed one site at a time. Work through the private list until each profile has a submitted request. A successful request on one broker does not notify other brokers, even when they display similar information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mark the date you sent each request and any stated response window. If a site rejects a request because it cannot match your identity, check the profile details and follow the site’s appeal or correction instructions rather than submitting random information.

5. Recheck and resubmit when necessary

Search the sites again periodically. The FTC’s consumer guidance says: “Periodically check the people search sites. If you find any new information about yourself, submit a new opt-out request.” A listing can reappear when a broker receives an updated address from an underlying record, when a new profile is created or when a relative’s or associate’s report exposes the same address.

Use a recurring reminder that fits your circumstances—for example, a calendar review several times a year—and repeat the search after a move, a name change or another major change in your public records. There is no single permanent opt-out that covers every future listing.

What an opt-out cannot do

  • It does not delete source records. Government databases, court records, property records and other public sources remain governed by the agency or custodian that maintains them. A broker opt-out alone cannot remove those records.
  • It may not remove an address from someone else’s report. Your address can appear in a profile for a relative, household member or associate. You may need to locate and submit separate requests for those reports where the site’s policy permits it.
  • It is not necessarily permanent. New or changed source data can cause a broker to recreate a listing, so periodic checking is part of the process.
  • It does not guarantee that every copy disappears immediately. Search indexes, cached pages or a different broker can continue to display information after one site processes your request.

These limits do not make opt-outs useless: they reduce the number of easily searchable profiles. They do mean that “removed” should be understood as suppression from a particular broker’s report, not the destruction of every public or privately held record.

DIY opt-outs versus a paid removal service

A paid personal-information removal service can save repetitive work, but it cannot promise permanent deletion or control every data source. Compare the service against the same tasks you would perform yourself.

Comparison point DIY opt-outs Paid service
Out-of-pocket cost Free according to the FTC’s consumer guidance. A provider charges according to its own program; the amount and billing schedule must be checked before enrollment.
Sites handled You submit requests to each site you find. Coverage depends on the provider’s stated list of people-search and data-broker sites.
Reporting You keep your own list of profiles, dates and confirmations. Check whether the service identifies the sites it contacted and shows the status of each request.
Monitoring You search again on your own schedule and submit new requests. Check how often it rescans for reappearing or newly discovered information.
Identity verification You provide the information each site requires to match your profile. You still may need to provide identifying information so the service can submit and verify requests on your behalf.

Before paying, ask which sites are covered in your country, whether relatives’ or associate reports are included, how the service handles a failed match, what evidence of completion you receive and how cancellation works. Treat monitoring frequency and transparent reporting as decision factors, not as proof that a listing can never return.

California’s centralized DROP option

Eligible California residents can use the California Privacy Protection Agency’s DROP service to send one deletion request to more than 600 registered data brokers. The service is free, but it is limited to California residents and includes identity and residency verification.

How DROP works

  1. Verify that you are a California resident through the service’s identity and residency checks.
  2. Create a DROP profile with the basic information you choose to provide.
  3. Submit the single deletion request to the registered brokers participating through DROP.
  4. Monitor the status in the service; individual brokers may update at different times.

The agency’s current implementation timeline says the platform launched January 1, 2026. Beginning August 1, 2026, registered brokers must access DROP at least once every 45 days to begin processing deletion requests. A status update can take up to 90 days, and the timing varies by broker. The agency says all brokers should have completed their initial download/upload cycle by November 2026. These are live implementation details, so check the agency’s current DROP page when you submit a request.

DROP changes the submission step, not the basic boundary of a broker deletion. It does not erase the public records that brokers may use, and it does not make a California resident’s information invisible to every organization that is outside the registered-broker process. Continue to check for listings that return or appear on sites outside the program.

When a safety threat requires more than an opt-out

If publishing your home address creates a specific safety risk, California residents should investigate Safe at Home, a separate program operated by the California Secretary of State. It is not a general replacement for people-search opt-outs and does not apply to every reader.

California describes eligibility for people affected by domestic violence, stalking, sexual assault, child abduction, elder or dependent adult abuse or human trafficking. The state also identifies certain people facing threats connected with reproductive or gender-affirming health-care facilities or public-entity work. The program provides statutory protections against public display of a participant’s home address and telephone number in specified circumstances.

Eligibility, documentation and confidentiality rules are specific to the program. Review the current Safe at Home information from the Secretary of State and the California Department of Justice, and follow its application instructions. If you are in immediate danger, contact emergency services or a qualified local advocate rather than relying on an online opt-out form.

State privacy laws are not uniform

Your legal rights depend on where you live, the type of data involved and whether a statute covers the business handling it. Do not assume that a deadline, deletion right or opt-out method described for California applies across the United States.

For example, the Texas attorney general’s current consumer-privacy summary describes rights to delete personal data and opt out of sale in specified circumstances, while also listing exceptions and limits. That example shows why you should consult your own state regulator’s current consumer-privacy guidance. A state-law request may reach a business’s personal-data systems, while a people-search opt-out addresses the display of a particular broker profile; the two processes can overlap but are not identical.

Protect the information you submit during removal

Opt-out forms require enough information to identify the correct record, so the removal process itself carries privacy risk. Use the site’s official privacy or opt-out page, verify the domain before entering data and avoid uploading documents unless the instructions clearly require them. Keep confirmations in a secure location and delete unnecessary copies of identity documents after the site’s stated verification period.

  • Do not pay a fee merely to use a form that the site identifies as a free privacy request.
  • Do not send your full identity details to an unsolicited email claiming to represent a broker.
  • Check the site’s privacy policy for how submitted information is stored and used.
  • Use a dedicated email address if you want removal-related messages separated from your primary account, while still being able to receive verification links.
  • Record the exact profile and request date so you can distinguish a completed removal from a different listing with a similar name.

Troubleshooting common failures

The opt-out link is hard to find

Search the site’s name with “opt out” or “remove my information,” then verify that the result leads to the site’s own domain and privacy instructions. Avoid third-party forms that do not clearly identify the broker handling the profile.

The site says it cannot find your record

Recheck the profile’s spelling, former address, phone number and URL. Submit the identifiers that actually appear on the listing, and follow any appeal or correction path the site provides. Keep a screenshot or private note showing what you searched, without sharing it publicly.

The profile disappeared and later returned

Submit a new request and note the new date. A changed source record or a new broker feed may have recreated the listing. Continue periodic checks; the FTC specifically recommends a new opt-out request when new information appears.

Your address appears in a relative’s profile

Search for that report and use the site’s process for the person whose profile is displaying the address, if the site permits a request from you. An opt-out on your own profile does not automatically change another person’s report.

A government record is the source

Contact the agency or records custodian only if you have a lawful basis and the agency offers a correction, confidentiality or address-substitution process. A people-search request can suppress the broker’s copy but cannot alter the source record.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical maintenance checklist

  1. Search your name with current and former addresses and phone numbers.
  2. Privately list every profile that displays your home address or related identifying information.
  3. Open each site’s official opt-out or “remove my information” instructions.
  4. Submit the required request and complete the site’s verification.
  5. Save the confirmation and record the submission date.
  6. Repeat for every broker where a listing appears.
  7. If you are a California resident, submit a DROP request in addition to checking sites outside its registered-broker scope.
  8. If you face a qualifying California safety threat, review Safe at Home separately.
  9. Schedule periodic searches and resubmit requests when information returns.
  10. Review your state’s current privacy guidance for rights that may apply beyond broker-profile suppression.

What success looks like

Success is fewer accessible broker profiles and a documented process for handling new ones. It is not the disappearance of every government record, a guarantee that relatives’ reports contain no reference to your address or a promise that a listing can never return. Combining careful site-by-site requests, California’s centralized option when eligible, safety-specific protections when applicable and regular rechecks gives you the most practical control over how easily your home address can be found.
