To remove an unwanted Windows 11 right-click command, first identify the exact wording, the object you right-clicked, and the app that supplied it. Check that app’s integration or context-menu setting before changing Windows. If your Windows build includes Microsoft’s newer Customize menu page, use it for supported built-in commands and app extensions. Registry changes are an advanced, item-specific option only after you have verified the owning app, the affected context, and the correct Windows version.
There is no single registry location or universal switch that safely removes every entry. A command can be built into Windows, supplied by a packaged app, registered for one file type, or attached to a Shell object such as every file, a folder, or a folder background. The source and scope determine the correct fix.

Decide what “remove” should mean
Windows 11 presents two related context menus. The compact menu appears when you right-click in File Explorer or on the desktop. Its Show more options command opens the older, expanded menu. You can also open that older menu with Shift+F10 or the keyboard menu key. Those actions change which menu you see; they do not uninstall, disable, or delete a command from Windows.

- Disable the command in every menu where it appears: you must change the app integration or the registration that supplies it.
- Open the legacy menu more quickly: use Show more options, Shift+F10, or the menu key instead of removing anything.
Windows’ newer controls can distinguish commands shown in the main menu from those placed in its submenu, but their availability depends on your Windows build and Insider channel. Do not assume that an instruction describing a new Settings page applies to every stable Windows 11 installation.
Identify the command, context, and owner
Write down the command exactly as it appears, including punctuation or an ellipsis. Then repeat the right-click in each relevant location and record where it appears. The same-looking label can be registered separately for different Shell objects, so context is essential.
Record the object you right-clicked
- A particular file: note the extension, such as
.pdf,.zip, or.jpg. - Any file: test two unrelated file types. If the command appears for both, it may be registered for all files.
- A folder or drive: check whether the item appears on folders, drives, or both.
- Blank space inside a folder: right-click the folder background. This is a different Shell object from a selected folder.
- The desktop background: determine whether the command is Explorer-wide or limited to a desktop context.
Microsoft documents separate registration scopes including * for all files, Folder, Directory, and DirectoryBackground. That is why a command can appear when you right-click a file but not when you right-click empty space, or vice versa. See Microsoft’s Shell extension handler documentation for the scope model.
Look for the app name
Some entries include the product name, while others use a generic verb such as “Share,” “Scan,” “Open with,” or “Send to.” Think about software installed or updated shortly before the item appeared. File managers, archive tools, media programs, cloud-storage clients, security software, developer tools, and graphics applications commonly add integration commands, but the label alone is not proof of ownership.
If the command appears only for one file type, open that file type’s normal application settings first. If it appears for every file or for folders, look for a broader Explorer, Shell, or context-menu integration option in the suspected app.

Try the app’s supported setting first
The safest first change is inside the application that added the command. Open the app and inspect Settings, Preferences, Options, or an installer Modify screen. Search for wording such as context menu, Explorer integration, Shell extension, right-click menu, file integration, or overlay.
- Close any files or windows that the app is actively using.
- Open the suspected app’s settings or maintenance/modify dialog.
- Turn off only the Explorer or context-menu integration, not the file association or core feature, unless you intend to change both.
- Apply the change and test the same object and file type you recorded earlier.
Not every application provides a switch. Microsoft’s Windows guidance confirms that apps can add context-menu extensions, but it does not promise that every extension exposes a consumer-facing removal control. If no supported option exists, do not delete a random registry entry simply because its name resembles the app.

Microsoft announced a redesigned context menu with built-in customization controls on 17 August 2026. The announcement described an Insider rollout, not a feature guaranteed on all stable Windows 11 PCs. First check Settings and your Windows version and channel. If your installation does not show the page, do not try to manufacture it with an undocumented registry tweak.
Find the page
On a build that exposes the feature, open the context-menu customization entry from Windows Settings. The exact navigation label can change while the feature is being tested; Microsoft’s announcement refers to the Customize menu entry and its Settings destination. Use the wording displayed on your own PC rather than following a path that is absent.
What the page can control
According to Microsoft’s announcement, the page is intended to manage built-in commands such as Send to and Create shortcut, app extensions shown in the main menu or a submenu, and the placement of common commands and Properties. Select the specific command or extension and turn it off or change its placement, then test both the compact menu and Show more options.

The controls may not affect every legacy extension. Microsoft’s developer guidance says older IContextMenu extensions appear in the legacy menu, while a modern menu extension must use IExplorerCommand and be packaged with package identity. Therefore, an item can remain under Show more options even after a modern-menu setting hides it.
Check the rollout status
Microsoft associated the first Experimental-channel rollout with Windows 11 version 26H2, build 26340.9212, in its 17 August 2026 announcement. A 11 September 2026 Experimental-channel note listed build 26340.9482 and described a further option to turn off the Customize context menu entry itself. These are rollout identifiers, not a promise that every PC with a similar version number has the same controls. Read the release channel and build shown in Settings > System > About and Windows Update before relying on an Insider-only instruction.
Microsoft’s announcement describes the goal this way: “Today, we’re excited to announce an updated context menu that delivers a faster, simpler, and more customizable experience.” The full announcement and feature conditions are at Windows Insider Blog. The later Experimental-channel change is documented in Microsoft’s 11 September 2026 release note.
Understand why entries behave differently
Windows Shell extensions are not all the same kind of registration. A simple file-type verb can add a command for a particular ProgID, while a shortcut-menu handler can be invoked when a menu is displayed and can apply to a broader Shell-object scope. Microsoft’s shortcut-menu documentation distinguishes registered verbs from more sophisticated handlers.
File-type verbs
A file-type verb is associated with a file class or ProgID. It may appear only for files with one extension or one application association. Changing that registration can affect the command for that type without changing folders or unrelated files. A command that appears only for .abc files should therefore be investigated as a file-type integration, not as a universal Explorer command.

Shortcut-menu handlers
A handler can be registered for a predefined Shell object or under a ProgID. Microsoft lists scopes such as all files, folders, directories, and directory backgrounds. A handler may therefore appear in several contexts, or only in the one for which it was registered. Similar wording does not mean that two visible entries share one removable key.
Modern and legacy extension paths
Windows 11 groups app extensions below Shell verbs in the modern menu. Older IContextMenu extensions are shown in the legacy menu. Modern placement requires an app to use IExplorerCommand and to be packaged with package identity, according to Microsoft’s Windows app best-practices guidance at the Windows developer documentation. This architecture explains why hiding an item in the compact menu does not necessarily remove it from Show more options.
Registry editing: an advanced, item-specific route
Use the registry only when you have identified the exact app, command, context, and supported procedure for your Windows version. Microsoft’s developer pages explain how registrations work; they are not a universal consumer cleanup recipe. Do not delete an unknown CLSID, remove an entire Shell branch, or import a blanket .reg file downloaded from an unverified site.
Prepare a reversible change
- Create a restore point through Windows’ System Protection settings, if System Protection is enabled on your PC.
- Close File Explorer windows and any app that may be using the affected extension.
- Open Registry Editor only after confirming the item-specific instructions from the app’s current documentation or support channel.
- Navigate to the exact key named by that procedure. Do not search-and-delete every result matching a product name; shared components can serve multiple features.
- Export the affected key with File > Export and save the
.regbackup somewhere you can find later. - Record the original value, the key path, the Windows build, and the context in which the command appeared.
Verify the registration scope before changing it
Check whether the verified procedure targets a file-type ProgID, all files, folders, directories, or a directory background. A change at the wrong scope can remove a command from more objects than intended or fail to affect the menu you care about. If the vendor’s instructions do not identify the scope, stop and ask the vendor for a version-specific procedure rather than guessing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePrefer disabling over deleting when supported
If the app’s documentation provides a disable value, policy setting, or uninstall/modify option, use that instead of deleting a key. A disable setting is usually easier to reverse and less likely to break an update or another feature. If the only documented method is removal of a specific registration, export that exact key first and keep the backup until you have tested every context in which the command appeared.
Best Value
Do not generalize developer examples
Microsoft’s examples show registration concepts and policy suppression for some verbs. They do not establish that a particular third-party command can be safely removed by copying an example path and substituting an app name. Registry names, ProgIDs, CLSIDs, permissions, and packaging differ between applications and releases. Treat the documentation at Creating Shell Extension Handlers and Extending Shortcut Menus as architectural reference, not as a generic deletion checklist.
Refresh and test the result
After changing an app setting or a verified registration, reopen the exact context you recorded. Close and reopen the relevant File Explorer window first; if the extension remains loaded, sign out or restart Windows only if the app’s instructions require it. Microsoft’s documentation does not establish one universal restart requirement.
- Right-click the same file, folder, drive, or background area.
- Check the compact menu and then Show more options.
- Test a second object of the same type to rule out a one-off display issue.
- Test an unrelated type if you expected a system-wide change.
- Confirm that the app’s main feature still works and that file associations, sharing, and permissions were not altered.
If the command disappeared only from the compact menu, that may be the intended result. If it remains in the legacy menu, the app may be using an older extension path or a separate registration.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely explanation | Next safe action |
|---|---|---|
| The item appears only after Show more options | It may be an older IContextMenu extension shown in the legacy menu. |
Check the app’s Explorer integration setting. Do not assume a modern-menu toggle can remove it. |
| The item appears for one extension only | It is probably associated with that file type or its ProgID. | Identify the default app and consult its file-integration settings or version-specific support instructions. |
| The item appears for every file but not folder backgrounds | The registration may target all files rather than directories or directory backgrounds. | Verify the scope before making any registry change. |
| The item appears only on folders or drives | The app may register a folder or directory handler. | Look for a folder/Explorer integration control in the app; avoid changing an all-files registration. |
| The Customize menu page is missing | Your build or release channel may not include the Insider feature. | Check Settings > System > About and Windows Update. Use the app’s control instead; do not add an undocumented key. |
| You disabled an item but it remains visible | Explorer may still have the extension loaded, or a second registration supplies a similar command. | Reopen Explorer, test the legacy menu, and re-check the exact command and context before touching anything else. |
| Several commands vanished after one change | The edited registration may have been shared by multiple verbs or contexts. | Restore the exported key and the restore point if needed, then obtain an item-specific procedure. |
Choose the least risky route
| Route | What it changes | Availability | Risk and reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Use the app’s setting | Usually disables that app’s Explorer or context-menu integration. | Depends on the app. | Lowest risk; normally reversible in the same setting. |
| Windows Customize menu | Controls supported built-in commands and app extensions in the modern menu, including placement where offered. | Build- and channel-dependent Insider rollout. | Supported Windows control; may not affect legacy extensions. |
| Use Show more options or Shift+F10 | Changes how you open the older menu, not which commands are installed. | Available in Windows 11. | No system change and fully reversible. |
| Verified registry or vendor procedure | Disables or removes a specific registration at its documented scope. | Requires a known app, entry, version, and context. | Highest risk; export the key and create a restore point first. |
Practical checklist
- Copy the exact command wording.
- Record whether it appears for a file, file type, folder, drive, desktop, or folder background.
- Identify the app named in the command or the app most likely to have added it.
- Check that app’s settings or installer modify options.
- Check whether your Windows build actually provides the Customize menu page.
- Test both the compact menu and Show more options.
- For registry work, verify the exact key and scope from current app documentation.
- Export the affected key and create a restore point before changing it.
- Reopen Explorer and test the same object plus an unrelated object.
- Restore the backup immediately if unrelated commands or app features break.
The reliable method is therefore diagnostic rather than a one-size-fits-all deletion: identify the owner and scope, use a supported control when available, and reserve registry editing for a documented, reversible change tied to that exact entry.
