Use the removal method that matches what is actually installed. For a normal Windows app, uninstall it from Start, Settings, or Control Panel. Microsoft 365 and Office use installation-specific procedures, and an individual app such as Word or Access usually cannot be removed while the rest of the suite remains installed. A Microsoft Store package has a different fallback from a Click-to-Run installation. Removing Office applications does not delete the documents, workbooks, or other files you created with them.
First identify what you are trying to remove
“Office app” can mean several different things. You might be looking at a full Microsoft 365 suite, a separately purchased Office application, Microsoft Teams, a Start-menu shortcut, or an optional Windows component. These have different removal rules.

| What you see | What removal means | Correct first step |
|---|---|---|
| A normal app listed under Installed apps | Removes that application | Try Start, Settings, then Control Panel |
| Microsoft 365 or Office suite | Usually removes the whole Office installation | Identify Click-to-Run or Microsoft Store installation |
| A separately purchased Office application | May be removable by itself | Use the app’s own uninstall entry or the Office instructions for its installation type |
| Microsoft Teams | May have two separate entries | Remove both Microsoft Teams and Teams Machine-Wide Installer for a full manual removal |
| A Start-menu icon or desktop shortcut | Removes only the shortcut | Delete or unpin the shortcut; this does not uninstall the program |
| An optional Windows feature or built-in component | May be managed by Windows rather than ordinary app uninstall | Use Windows Features or Optional features when available; some built-in components cannot be removed |
Deleting a shortcut is safe when your goal is a cleaner menu, but it does not free the application itself. Conversely, a remaining shortcut after an uninstall does not necessarily mean the program is still installed.

For a standalone utility or any ordinary app, start with the least complicated method. Windows 10 and Windows 11 can expose different controls for the same program, so move to the next route if the first one does not offer Uninstall.

Method 1: Start menu
- Select Start, then All apps.
- Find the application you no longer need.
- Right-click it and choose Uninstall.
- Complete the program’s removal wizard if one appears.
This route is convenient for ordinary desktop and Store apps. It may show only a shortcut for some programs, and some built-in Windows apps do not provide an uninstall command.
Method 2: Settings
- Open Settings.
- Choose Apps, then Installed apps.
- Locate the program. Use the search box or sort by name if necessary.
- Select the More menu beside it and choose Uninstall.
- Confirm the removal and follow any separate uninstaller prompts.
If the More menu has no Uninstall option, do not delete random program folders. Try Control Panel instead, or use the instructions for the app’s installation type.
Method 3: Control Panel
- Open Control Panel.
- Choose Programs, then Programs and Features.
- Select the application in the list.
- Choose Uninstall or Uninstall/Change and complete the wizard.
Control Panel can expose a traditional desktop application’s uninstaller when Settings does not. It will not make every built-in Windows component removable.

Repair instead of uninstalling a broken app
If the application is needed but is malfunctioning, look for Repair in Settings. Control Panel may show Repair or Change after you select the program. The available options vary by application. Repair can preserve the installation while replacing damaged files; uninstalling is more disruptive and should be reserved for removal or a failed repair.
Determine how Microsoft 365 or Office was installed
Office removal depends on the installation technology, not merely on the product name. Open any installed Office application, such as Word or Excel, and use this path:

- Choose File.
- Select Account or Office Account.
- Choose About.
- Read the version and build information. Microsoft identifies a Click-to-Run installation with the words Click-to-Run; a Store installation identifies Microsoft Store.
Record the result before closing the app. Using a Store-package command against a Click-to-Run installation, or vice versa, can leave the Office installation untouched.
| Installation type | How it is identified | Removal approach |
|---|---|---|
| Click-to-Run | About screen includes version/build information and “Click-to-Run” | Use the Office entry in Control Panel or Microsoft’s current Click-to-Run removal instructions |
| Microsoft Store | About screen identifies Microsoft Store | Use Settings first; use the Store-specific administrator PowerShell fallback only when needed |
| Standalone Office application | Product was purchased and installed separately | May support individual removal, subject to its installation method |
Remove a Click-to-Run Office installation
For a Click-to-Run installation, use the Office entry rather than trying to delete individual folders.
- Open Control Panel.
- Go to Programs, then Programs and Features.
- Select the Microsoft 365 or Office entry.
- Choose Uninstall or Uninstall/Change.
- Confirm the prompts and restart Windows if the uninstaller requests it.
The exact product label can include the subscription or year edition. Select the entry that matches the Office installation you identified in the About screen. If the entry is missing, damaged, or the wizard fails, use Microsoft’s Office uninstall troubleshooter described below rather than manually removing files.
Remove a Microsoft Store Office package
For an Office installation identified as Microsoft Store, try Settings first:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the Microsoft 365 or Office package.
- Open its More menu and select Uninstall.
- Confirm the removal.
If Settings cannot remove the Store package, Microsoft provides an administrator PowerShell fallback. This applies specifically to the Microsoft Store package; it is not a general Office-uninstall command.

If the verification command returns no package, the Store package is no longer registered for the current user. If it still returns a package or PowerShell reports an error, stop there and use Microsoft’s current Store-removal guidance; do not apply the command to a Click-to-Run installation.
Can you uninstall only Word, Excel, Access, or Publisher?
Usually, no. Microsoft states that an individual application included in a Microsoft 365 suite generally cannot be uninstalled while leaving the rest of that suite in place. Word, Excel, Access, Publisher, and similar components are installed and serviced as part of the suite.
The important exception is a standalone application purchased and installed separately. A standalone product can have its own uninstall entry, although the available controls still depend on how it was installed.
If your goal is only to simplify Start, remove or unpin the shortcut instead. That changes the menu without changing the Office installation. If your goal is to reduce the installed Office footprint, the supported choice is normally to remove the suite and install only the applications or edition you actually need, subject to your license and available installer.

Office removal does not delete your files
Uninstalling Microsoft 365 or Office removes the applications from the computer. It does not remove files, documents, or workbooks you created with those applications. Your files may be stored locally, on a network location, or in a cloud service, depending on how you saved them. Removing the software does not create a backup, however, so copy any important local files before making other changes to Windows.
Remove Teams completely when it is still present
Teams can appear to survive an Office cleanup because it has more than one installation entry. For a full manual Teams removal, uninstall both:
- Microsoft Teams
- Teams Machine-Wide Installer
Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features, depending on which entries your Windows installation exposes. Removing only the user-facing Teams app can leave the machine-wide installer behind, allowing Teams to return for another user.
Microsoft also notes that uninstalling Office removes Teams, but reinstalling Office or performing an Office online repair can include Teams again. If Teams returns after an otherwise successful Office repair or reinstall, check the Office installation choice rather than treating the recurrence as an uninstall failure.

Check whether it is built into Windows
Some Windows components are built in and cannot be removed through the normal Installed apps page. An optional component may instead be listed under Windows Features or Optional features. The available menus and labels vary between Windows releases, so confirm the current path on the affected PC before changing a feature.

Try the other supported route
Start, Settings, and Control Panel do not always show the same controls. If Settings has no Uninstall command, check Control Panel. If neither route lists the program, identify whether it is an Office suite, a Store package, a machine-wide installer, or a built-in component before attempting anything more advanced.
Use the official Office troubleshooter for supported editions
Microsoft’s Get Help uninstall troubleshooter supports Microsoft 365 and Office 2021, 2019, and 2016. It must run on the same affected Windows computer and requires Windows 10 or later. It currently cannot uninstall Office 2024.
- Open Microsoft’s Get Help uninstall troubleshooter on the affected PC.
- Follow its prompts to detect the Office installation.
- Allow it to remove the supported Office edition when it offers that action.
- Restart if requested, then check Installed apps and Programs and Features again.
Do not assume that the troubleshooter’s support for older editions applies to Office 2024. If you have Office 2024, use the current Microsoft removal instructions for that edition instead.
Deal with shortcuts left behind
After an uninstall, Start-menu or desktop shortcuts can remain, particularly in the preinstalled Windows 10 situation described by Microsoft. Remove those shortcuts separately. Their presence alone is not proof that Office is still installed: verify by checking Installed apps, Programs and Features, and—when relevant—the Store package query.
A decision guide for the right removal path
| Your situation | Recommended sequence | What not to do |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary app listed in Settings | Settings > Apps > Installed apps > More > Uninstall | Do not delete its installation folder first |
| Ordinary app missing an uninstall command in Settings | Check Start, then Control Panel > Programs and Features | Do not assume a missing Settings button means the app is built in |
| Office identified as Click-to-Run | Use the Office entry in Control Panel or the current Click-to-Run instructions | Do not use the Microsoft Store PowerShell command |
| Office identified as Microsoft Store | Try Settings; use the administrator PowerShell package command only as the Store-specific fallback | Do not run it against another Office installation type |
| Only one suite app is unwanted | Keep the suite, remove its shortcut, or change the Office installation through supported Microsoft options | Do not expect Word, Excel, or Access to uninstall independently from a suite |
| Teams remains after Office removal | Check for both Teams entries and remove Microsoft Teams plus Teams Machine-Wide Installer | Do not treat a returning Teams entry after Office repair as proof the first uninstall failed |
| Office uninstall is damaged | Use the supported Get Help troubleshooter for Microsoft 365, 2021, 2019, or 2016 on Windows 10 or later | Do not use that tool as an Office 2024 solution |
Verify the result safely
Use a short verification checklist after any removal:
- Search Start for the application and confirm whether it launches.
- Check Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Check Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- For a Microsoft Store removal, run the Store package verification command only if that was the installation type.
- Remove stale Start or desktop shortcuts separately.
- Restart Windows if the uninstaller requested it or if an Office process remains open.
A shortcut, a file association, or a document icon can remain after the application itself has gone. Verify the installed-program lists before repeating an uninstall or deleting folders.
Windows version and support note
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 under its standard support policy. This does not mean Office should be uninstalled, and it does not change the removal steps above. It does mean that the Windows edition and its support status are relevant when a troubleshooter or app-removal interface behaves differently from current documentation.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Deleting only the shortcut: this cleans the menu but leaves the application installed.
- Deleting Office folders manually: this can leave services, registrations, file associations, and update components behind.
- Using the Store command on Click-to-Run Office: the package name is specific to the Store installation.
- Expecting suite components to be independent: an app bundled with Microsoft 365 usually cannot be removed alone.
- Removing only one Teams entry: the machine-wide installer can remain and reinstall Teams for users.
- Interpreting leftovers as proof of failure: stale shortcuts are separate from the installed application.
- Using an unsupported troubleshooter edition: the documented tool supports Microsoft 365, Office 2021, 2019, and 2016, not Office 2024.
Bottom line
Start with Start, Settings, or Control Panel for ordinary applications. For Office, identify Click-to-Run versus Microsoft Store in File > Account > About, then use the matching removal path. A Microsoft 365 suite normally cannot give up just one bundled app, while a standalone Office purchase may be removable independently. Keep the Store PowerShell command limited to the Store package, remove both Teams entries when a complete Teams cleanup is required, and use the supported troubleshooter only for the Office editions and Windows versions it covers.
