Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallStart with the least destructive supported action: open Settings > Storage, select the unofficial app, and delete it. If its icon remains or the console’s content index behaves incorrectly, use Safe Mode and choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Rebuild Database. Use Restore Default Settings only when the problem is configuration-related. For the most complete supported return to Sony software, back up anything you need and select Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) with Sony’s official reinstallation file on a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive; that final operation erases user data.
This sequence separates app removal, index repair, settings cleanup, and a complete software reset. Choosing the smallest step that solves the problem protects saved data and avoids unnecessary recovery work.

Choose the recovery level before you start
“Back to stock” normally means that the console is running Sony’s official system software and that the unofficial application is no longer installed. The documented Sony procedures address software and content on the PS5. They do not establish that a physical hardware modification has been removed, so a console with hardware changes may require professional service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat each supported action does
| Action | Apps and user content | System software | Equipment or access needed | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Delete the app in Settings > Storage | Removes the selected app; other content remains | Not replaced | Normal PS5 menus | One unofficial app is visible and the console otherwise works |
| Rebuild Database | Rebuilds the content index without intentionally erasing user data | Not replaced | Safe Mode and a USB-connected controller | An icon remains after deletion or content indexing is wrong |
| Restore Default Settings | Sony says stored games, apps, captures, video clips, and saved data remain | Not replaced | Normal PS5 menus | Settings or configuration need to be reset |
| Reset PS5 | Deletes user data | Performs a factory reset but is not the reinstall-system-software procedure | Normal PS5 menus or Safe Mode, depending on the recovery screen | A complete factory reset is required |
| Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) | Deletes user data | Removes and reinstalls the system software | Official reinstallation file, FAT32 or exFAT USB drive, Safe Mode, and a USB data cable | The strongest supported software reset or a failed system installation |
The two reset choices are not interchangeable. Restore Default Settings is a settings cleanup that preserves stored content. Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) is the destructive procedure that also replaces the system software.

Prepare without making the problem worse
Decide what must be preserved
Write down which games, applications, screenshots, video clips, and saves you still need. If you proceed to either reset operation, back up required data first. A reinstall is not a way to recover data after the fact: Sony’s support instructions state that reinstalling the system software deletes all data on the PS5.
Stop using unofficial update files
Do not mix an unofficial package, altered firmware, exploit file, or third-party recovery utility with Sony’s process. Sony warns that update data from another source, or a method other than the documented method, can prevent the console from operating correctly or installing updates. The warning also says that an altered console or non-official method can affect warranty coverage and repair service.
Have the required hardware ready
- A USB flash drive that can be formatted as FAT32 or exFAT is required for the reinstallation route.
- Sony’s current instructions call for approximately 1.2 GB of free space on the USB drive for the reinstallation file.
- A USB data cable is needed to connect the DualSense controller in Safe Mode. A cable that only supplies power may not let the console detect the controller.
- Use a PC or Mac to format the drive and create the required folders. Formatting removes existing files from that drive, so copy anything important elsewhere first.
1. Delete the unofficial app from Storage
Use this first when the app is listed normally and the PS5 still reaches the Home screen.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- From the PS5 Home screen, open Settings.
- Select Storage.
- Open the category that contains the unofficial application.
- Highlight the app, choose the delete command, and confirm.
- Return to the Home screen and check that the app tile is gone. Reopen Storage if you want to confirm that the application no longer appears in the installed list.
Sony’s application troubleshooting guidance uses deletion followed by reinstall for problematic applications. In this case, do not reinstall the unofficial package; the objective is to leave the official console software and remove the unsupported app. If the tile remains after the deletion, do not repeatedly delete it. Repair the content index with the next procedure.
2. Rebuild the content index in Safe Mode
Rebuild Database is appropriate when a deleted app icon remains, the Home screen shows stale content, or a system feature is behaving as though the deleted item still exists. It is an index repair, not a factory reset.
- Turn the PS5 completely off. Do not leave it in Rest Mode.
- Press and hold the console’s power button. Release it after the second beep; this starts Safe Mode.
- Connect the DualSense controller to the console with a USB data cable, then press the controller’s PS button.
- Choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database.
- Select Rebuild Database and allow the console to finish. Do not disconnect power while it is working.
- When the PS5 returns to the normal interface, check the Home screen and Storage again.
Sony identifies this option as useful when a game icon remains after deletion. The same index-repair logic makes it the supported next step for a stale unofficial-app icon. The procedure does not intentionally erase user data, but it can change how content is organized while the index is rebuilt.
If Safe Mode does not accept the controller
Reconnect the controller directly to the PS5 with a USB data cable and press the PS button again. If the console still cannot proceed in Safe Mode, stop experimenting with unofficial files and move to Sony’s PlayStation Repairs diagnostic route rather than downloading recovery packages from an unverified source.
3. Reset settings without deleting stored content
Use this option when the app has been removed but settings or configuration are still wrong. It is not a substitute for reinstalling system software and it is not needed merely because an icon was stale.
- Open Settings from the Home screen.
- Go to System > System Software > Reset Options.
- Select Restore Default Settings.
- Read the confirmation screen and proceed only if you want the console’s settings returned to their defaults.
- After the restart, review the settings that matter to you and confirm that the unofficial app is no longer listed under Storage.
Sony says this operation leaves stored games, apps, screenshots, video clips, and saved data intact. It changes configuration; it does not replace the operating system or provide the cleanest remedy for a modified system-software installation.
4. Reinstall official PS5 system software
Choose this route when you need the most complete supported software reset, when the installation itself is suspected to be altered, or when the normal menus and index repair have not returned the console to a usable stock state. Treat it as a data-erasing operation.

Back up before formatting anything
Complete your backup before preparing the USB drive. The reinstall deletes all user data on the PS5, so verify that the files you need are stored somewhere other than the console. If you cannot access the normal interface, use the recovery choices available to you and do not assume that a later reinstall will preserve local saves or captures.
Create the official USB installer
- On a PC or Mac, format the USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT.
- At the top level of the drive, create a folder named
PS5. - Inside
PS5, create a folder namedUPDATE. - Download Sony’s official PS5 system-software reinstallation file from Sony’s support instructions. Save it inside the
UPDATEfolder with the exact filenamePS5UPDATE.PUP. - Check the drive before ejecting it: the complete path must be
PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP, the drive must use FAT32 or exFAT, and it must have approximately 1.2 GB of free space available for the file. - Eject the drive safely from the computer.
Do not rename the file to a different extension, put it in the drive’s top level, add another folder between PS5 and UPDATE, or substitute a file obtained from another site. Sony specifically warns that an update from another source or an undocumented installation method can stop the console from operating or updating correctly.
Run the reinstall from Safe Mode
- Turn the PS5 off.
- Press and hold the power button until the second beep to enter Safe Mode.
- Connect the DualSense controller with a USB data cable and press the PS button.
- Insert the USB drive containing
PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP. - Select Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software).
- Read the warning, confirm that your backup is complete, and follow the on-screen prompts until the process finishes.
“Reinstalling the system software on your PS5 console will delete all of the data on your PS5 console.”
— Sony Interactive Entertainment, PS5 system-software support
Keep the console connected to power throughout the procedure. When it restarts, complete the initial setup, install only software obtained through the normal official channels, and check the system-software information in Settings.
How to choose between Reset PS5 and Reinstall System Software
A standard Reset PS5 is a factory reset that deletes user data. The separate Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) option also removes and reinstalls the operating system from the USB installer. Choose the latter when your goal is specifically to replace the software installation or to return from an altered software state to Sony’s supported installation. Neither option should be treated as a selective app remover: both are destructive to local user data.
There is no supported shortcut that preserves saves while replacing the system software. If preserving content is the priority, stop at deletion, database rebuilding, or Restore Default Settings. If replacing the installation is the priority, finish the backup first and accept the full-data-erasure warning.
Common preparation and installation pitfalls
- Formatting the wrong drive: confirm the USB volume before formatting because formatting deletes files already on that drive.
- Using the wrong file: the normal update file and the reinstallation file are not interchangeable. Use Sony’s reinstallation download for the Safe Mode reinstall and keep the exact
PS5UPDATE.PUPname. - Incorrect capitalization or nesting: create
PS5, thenUPDATE, then the file. A file placed at the drive root or in an extra folder will not match the documented path. - Insufficient free space: allow approximately 1.2 GB for the file, rather than filling the drive with unrelated files.
- Power interruption: do not remove the USB drive or disconnect power while Safe Mode is writing the installation.
- Power-only controller cable: Safe Mode requires the DualSense to communicate over USB, so use a data-capable cable.
- Repeating unofficial attempts: altered packages and undocumented methods can worsen boot or update failures and can affect warranty or repair service.
What to verify after the reset
Verification should be deliberate rather than based on whether the Home screen looks normal.
- Open Settings > Storage and confirm that the unofficial app is not present.
- Check the system-software information and confirm that the console reports the expected official installation.
- Review the Home screen for stale tiles or entries that point to the removed application.
- Test a basic system function such as opening Settings, browsing Storage, and launching an officially obtained application.
- Restore only the data and applications you trust. Do not copy an unofficial installer back onto the console while diagnosing the system.
If you used Restore Default Settings rather than the reinstall, your stored content should still be available according to Sony’s description. If you used either reset operation, expect to restore your backed-up content and reconfigure the console instead.

The console reaches the Home screen, but settings are corrupted
Use Settings > System > System Software > Reset Options > Restore Default Settings. This targets configuration while preserving the games, apps, captures, clips, and saves that Sony says remain stored.
The reinstall file is not recognized
Recheck every requirement: the drive must be FAT32 or exFAT; the folders must be PS5 and then UPDATE; the filename must be PS5UPDATE.PUP; and the file must be the official reinstallation download. Recreate the folder structure if necessary, safely eject the drive, and try Safe Mode again. Do not use an altered or unofficial file as a workaround.
The PS5 will not update, boot, or leave Safe Mode
Stop cycling through third-party recovery methods. Sony directs users to its PlayStation Repairs diagnostic tool when the console remains stuck in Safe Mode, will not update, or will not boot. Follow that route for an unresolved official-recovery failure.

The console works but repair or warranty service is a concern
Sony warns that altered consoles and non-official update methods may fail to operate or install updates and can affect warranty and repair service. Keep the recovery process limited to Sony’s documented files and menus, and disclose relevant modification history if a repair center asks for it.

- One app is visible and everything else works: delete it from Settings > Storage.
- The app tile survives deletion: enter Safe Mode and rebuild the database.
- Only settings are wrong: use Restore Default Settings so stored content is not intentionally removed.
- You need official system software reinstalled: back up first, prepare the exact USB layout, and use Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software).
- Official recovery cannot complete: use PlayStation Repairs instead of unofficial firmware or unverified recovery tools.
Following that order minimizes unnecessary disruption while still giving you a supported path to a stock software installation when ordinary deletion and index repair are not enough.
Frequently asked questions
How do I uninstall an unofficial PS5 app?
Open Settings > Storage, locate the application, select it, and confirm deletion. This is the least destructive supported step and leaves other content in place.
How do I remove homebrew from a PS5?
Delete the visible app, rebuild the database if its icon remains, and use the official system-software reinstall only when you need to replace the software installation. The documented software steps do not prove that a physical hardware modification has been removed.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

It is a settings reset, not an app or firmware wipe. Sony says games, apps, screenshots, video clips, and saved data remain. Delete the app separately, or use the reinstall procedure if replacing system software is required.
Will a factory reset remove unofficial apps?
Reset PS5 deletes user data, but the strongest supported route for replacing the operating system is the distinct Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) option. Back up first because both reset choices are destructive to local user data.
What USB format does the PS5 reinstall require?
Use a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, with approximately 1.2 GB of free space. The required path is PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP.

The Bottom Line
Delete the unofficial app first, rebuild the database only for a leftover icon, and use Restore Default Settings only for configuration cleanup. If you need a genuinely clean Sony software installation, back up everything, use a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive with PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP, enter Safe Mode, and select Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software). That operation erases all user data. If the official process fails, stop using unofficial files and contact PlayStation Repairs.
