How to Remove Unauthorized Remote-Access Software From Windows and macOS

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

Treat an unknown remote-access program as a security incident, not an ordinary uninstall. If someone may still be connected, unplug Ethernet or turn off Wi‑Fi first, preserve screenshots and notes, then remove the software, disable built-in remote access, clear startup persistence, scan the system, patch it, and change passwords from a different, trusted device.

Deleting the visible app alone may not stop access. Services, scheduled tasks, login items, browser extensions, management profiles, extra administrator accounts, or active sessions can survive. The Windows and macOS procedures below show how to contain, investigate, clean, and verify a machine without destroying useful evidence.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Do this first if a remote session may still be active

  1. Disconnect the computer. Turn off Wi‑Fi and unplug Ethernet. If it is a company device, follow your incident-response policy and contact IT before making changes. Isolation prevents an intruder from continuing a session or deleting evidence.
  2. Do not sign in to sensitive services on that computer. Avoid banking, password-manager, email, administrator, and cloud-console logins until the machine has been checked.
  3. Record what you can see. Photograph or screenshot the program window, tray icon, prompts, “support” or session code, account names, publisher, install date, executable path, connected-user list, and any warning that the screen is being viewed. Write down the date and time, what the other person did, and any files or services you noticed.
  4. Do not immediately wipe the computer. A reinstallation may remove an attacker but also destroys information that an employer, insurer, or investigator may need. Preserve evidence first unless an active compromise requires emergency containment.

If the software was installed intentionally for legitimate support, the same checklist still applies when it is no longer needed or was misconfigured. Confirm the owner and support arrangement before deleting a tool that an employer or family member relies on.

How to tell whether the software is unauthorized

Remote-control products often have legitimate uses. An unfamiliar name is a reason to investigate, not proof of malware. Check the publisher, installation source, signed executable, install date, associated service, and who requested the installation. A scammer may use a well-known product, a portable executable that leaves little installation trace, or a renamed and obfuscated tool.

  • [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
  • Strong warning signs: a stranger instructed you to install it; a support code or password was created without your consent; the program returns after removal; a new administrator account appears; unknown login items or scheduled tasks are present; or a person can connect after you thought the app was closed.
  • Context that may be legitimate: your employer’s help desk, a managed-service provider, a family member you authorized, or a tool installed during a documented support appointment. Confirm through a separate phone number or known company contact, not a number shown in a pop-up.
  • Names that deserve checking: AnyDesk, TeamViewer, RustDesk, Screen Sharing, Remote Management, Remote Desktop, VNC utilities, and similar products can be legitimate or abused. The name alone does not establish intent.

Keep the exact filename and path. Security tools and investigators can use those details even when the displayed application name is misleading.

Windows: complete removal and recovery

1. Contain the Windows PC

Disconnect the network before opening accounts or browsing for removal instructions. If the machine is managed by an organization, notify the administrator from a different device; centralized logs may be lost if you shut down or clean the PC without coordination.

2. Identify the program and its persistence

Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (called Apps & features on some Windows releases) and note the displayed name, publisher, version, and install date. In Task Manager, check running processes and the Startup apps tab. Also record any service name, executable path, support ID, or user account shown by the program.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not kill a process solely because its name is unfamiliar. Windows and hardware vendors use names that can look obscure. Verify the file location and publisher, and preserve a screenshot before stopping or uninstalling it.

3. Uninstall the application

  1. Use Microsoft’s standard path: Settings > Apps > Apps & features (or Installed apps on newer Windows).
  2. Select the remote-access application, choose Uninstall, and complete its own removal wizard if one appears.
  3. Restart only after you have recorded the evidence you need. If the program is still running, disconnecting the network is safer than allowing another session while you investigate.

Microsoft documents removal of the built-in Remote Desktop Connection client on Windows 11 version 23H2 or later. In Installed apps, select the client and uninstall it, or run the elevated command mstsc.exe /uninstall, then restart. See Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Connection instructions for the edition and interface details.

4. Turn off Windows remote access you do not use

Open Settings > System > Remote Desktop and turn off Remote Desktop if you do not require it. On older releases, the setting is under System Properties > Remote. Remove unfamiliar allowed users and check whether a support tool has enabled its own unattended-access option.

Review these persistence locations:

  • Local users and groups: look for new or unexpected administrator accounts and unfamiliar members of the Administrators group.
  • Startup apps and folders: disable unknown entries, but preserve their names and paths first.
  • Task Scheduler: inspect tasks that launch an executable at logon, startup, or on a recurring timer.
  • Services: look for a service associated with the remote-control tool or an unexplained service that runs automatically.
  • Firewall rules: remove rules created for an unwanted tool and close unused inbound ports. Do not disable the firewall as a troubleshooting shortcut.
  • Browser extensions: remove extensions you did not install, especially those that request screen capture, remote support, or broad browsing permissions.

For business networks, CISA recommends auditing Remote Desktop Protocol use, closing unused RDP ports, restricting access to known accounts, logging connection attempts, and requiring multifactor authentication for privileged RDP access. Its StopRansomware Guide explains the broader controls. CISA also advises application controls that prevent installation and execution of portable versions of unauthorized remote-access software; see its Guide to Securing Remote Access Software.

5. Scan in layers

Reconnect only when you are ready to update security intelligence and scan. Microsoft’s unwanted-software guidance recommends a current Microsoft Defender Antivirus full scan. In Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options, choose Full scan. If unwanted software persists or returns, use Microsoft Defender Offline, which restarts the PC and scans before normal Windows processes load.

Microsoft also describes the Malicious Software Removal Tool and says Defender Offline or Microsoft Safety Scanner should be considered for comprehensive detection and removal. Use downloads only from Microsoft’s official pages: unwanted-software protection guidance and MSRT information. A clean result does not prove that an attacker never had access; it means the tools did not detect the items they are designed to find.

6. Recheck persistence and recover accounts

After the scans and a restart, inspect startup apps, services, scheduled tasks, browser extensions, local administrators, and recent sign-in events again. A recurring process, a recreated account, or an unexplained connection is a reason to stop using the PC for sensitive work.

From a known-clean phone or computer, change the Windows account password and important online passwords. Revoke active sessions where each service allows it, remove unknown recovery methods, and enable multifactor authentication. Change passwords in an order that protects your email and password manager first, because those accounts can reset others.

macOS: complete removal and recovery

1. Contain and document the Mac

If another person may still be viewing or controlling the Mac, turn off Wi‑Fi or unplug Ethernet. Photograph the app name, developer, prompts, login-item list, account names, and any “Your screen is being observed” message. Keep a written timeline before deleting anything.

2. Remove the remote-access app safely

  1. Check the vendor’s uninstaller inside the application folder or its documented removal option. A vendor uninstaller is preferable when it removes associated helpers and launch agents.
  2. If no trustworthy uninstaller exists, drag the unwanted application from Applications to the Trash, but do not empty Trash until you have documented the file and path.
  3. Do not override macOS security prompts to run an unverified replacement or “fix.” Apple says overriding security settings to open an unchecked app is the most common way a Mac becomes infected with malware. Its User Guide explains the Gatekeeper warning and safer choices.

Removing the application bundle may not remove a helper, launch agent, background item, management profile, or account. Continue through the following checks before considering the incident closed.

3. Remove login-item and background persistence

Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions. Under Open at Login, select unknown entries and click the remove button. Review third-party extensions and the list of applications allowed to run in the background. Restart, return to the same screen, and confirm that the item has not returned. Apple’s current instructions are at Login Items & Extensions; labels can vary by macOS release.

Also inspect System Settings > Privacy & Security for unfamiliar entries under Screen Recording, Accessibility, Full Disk Access, and related control categories. Remove permission only after recording what it was granted to; an employer-managed tool may need those permissions for legitimate support.

4. Turn off built-in sharing and remove unknown users

Open System Settings > General > Sharing. Turn off Screen Sharing and Remote Management unless you explicitly need them. Remove unfamiliar allowed users and review any listed administrators or sharing accounts.

Apple explains that Screen Sharing lets another computer view and control the Mac, and that turning it off prevents other computers on the network from connecting. See Apple’s Screen Sharing guide. Do not assume that deleting a third-party app disables these built-in services.

5. Disable Apple Remote Desktop management when appropriate

If Remote Management was enabled without authorization and you understand the administrative consequences, Apple documents this command:

sudo /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/kickstart -deactivate

Run it only in an administrator shell and only when you are sure the Mac is not managed by an employer or school. Apple’s Remote Desktop guide describes the management setting. On a managed Mac, ask the administrator to disable it through the organization’s approved process instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Investigate “Your screen is being observed”

That warning is not limited to a malicious remote-control app. Apple lists Screen Sharing, Apple Remote Desktop, VNC software, video-conference screen sharing, and screen-recording tools as possible causes. Check Screen Recording and Screen Sharing permissions, update macOS, and restart. If the message persists, test in safe mode to determine whether a third-party startup item is responsible. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance is at Apple Support.

7. Recover the Mac and online accounts

From a clean device, change the Mac login password and important online passwords, revoke active sessions, remove unknown trusted devices or recovery methods, and enable multifactor authentication. If an unknown management profile, administrator account, or recurring remote-control process remains, stop using the Mac for sensitive work and obtain professional incident-response help.

What survives an uninstall

Remote-access software can leave several independent ways to reconnect. Check every applicable category rather than assuming one deletion solved the problem.

Persistence location Windows examples macOS examples What to verify
Automatic launch Startup apps, Startup folders, scheduled tasks Login Items & Extensions, launch agents Unknown entries, paths, and return after restart
Background service Services, helper processes Background items, helper tools Publisher, executable location, automatic start setting
Remote-management setting Remote Desktop, RDP firewall rules Screen Sharing, Remote Management Enabled state and allowed users
Account access Local administrators, recent sign-ins Administrators, profiles, trusted devices Accounts and sessions you do not recognize
Browser or privacy permission Extensions and screen-capture permissions Screen Recording, Accessibility, Full Disk Access Apps with control or viewing rights

Manual cleanup or professional incident response?

Manual removal is reasonable for a personal computer when the tool was isolated, no administrator or sensitive data was exposed, and all persistence checks remain clean. Professional help is safer when the facts below apply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Situation Why escalation matters Recommended action
Administrator credentials were exposed An intruder may have altered security settings, created accounts, or installed additional tools. Disconnect the device, preserve evidence, rotate credentials from a clean device, and contact an incident-response professional.
Business, regulated, or customer data was accessible Notification, legal, insurance, and evidence-preservation duties may apply. Use the organization’s incident process and involve IT/security before wiping or rebuilding.
The tool or account returns after removal Persistence remains or another account is controlling the machine. Stop sensitive use and obtain forensic or managed endpoint assistance.
Remote access is still active Continuing interaction can let the intruder observe cleanup or undo changes. Isolate the network immediately and use a separate device to call trusted support.
The device is centrally managed Local changes can break policy, destroy logs, or conflict with management software. Let the authorized administrator investigate and contain it.

Verification checklist before reconnecting normally

  • The unknown application, helper, service, scheduled task, login item, extension, and management setting have been documented and removed or explicitly authorized.
  • No unfamiliar local administrator, macOS administrator, management profile, recovery method, or trusted device remains.
  • Windows Defender’s current full scan has completed; Defender Offline or another Microsoft-recommended scan was used when unwanted software persisted.
  • macOS privacy permissions and Sharing settings show only software and users you recognize.
  • The operating system and installed applications are fully patched through their normal update mechanisms.
  • Important passwords were changed from a clean device, active sessions were revoked, and multifactor authentication is enabled.
  • After a restart, the process, warning, account, or network connection does not return.

If any check fails, keep the computer isolated. Repeated symptoms, unexplained administrator access, or evidence that files were opened or copied should be handled as an incident rather than as a routine software-removal task.

Preventing a repeat compromise

  • Install remote-support software only from a verified source and only when you understand who will control the session.
  • Disable unattended access and remove the tool when the support job ends.
  • Use unique passwords and multifactor authentication for email, administrator, cloud, and remote-access accounts.
  • Keep Windows, macOS, browsers, and remote-support tools patched.
  • For organizations, maintain an approved-software list, application allowlisting, centralized logs, network controls, and an inventory of remote-access services. CISA specifically warns that portable or obfuscated tools can evade ordinary antivirus and recommends controls that block unauthorized portable versions.
  • Teach users that technical-support callers and pop-ups requesting remote control are not proof of a real emergency. Verify support through a known channel before granting access.

Key points to remember

Uninstalling the visible program is only the middle of the job. Contain the connection, preserve evidence, inspect persistence and accounts, disable Windows Remote Desktop or macOS Sharing features you do not need, scan with platform security tools, and rotate credentials from a clean device. Administrator compromise, sensitive-data exposure, active or recurring access, and managed business systems all justify escalation to IT or an incident-response specialist.
