If an unfamiliar game, store, or account connection appears on your PS5, do not run it or enter your credentials into it. First determine whether it is an installed game/app or an account authorization. Delete a local item through Settings > Storage > Games and Apps. Remove an authorized service through Settings > Users and Accounts > Authorized Apps. Update the console, use Safe Mode database rebuilding only when necessary, and reserve a full reset for the last resort because it erases console storage.
Identify what appeared on the console
The correct removal method depends on where the software exists. A title shown in the Game Library may be an installed local package, a game associated with the signed-in account, or a shortcut created by an authorized service. These cases require different actions.

Locally installed game or app
Open Settings > Storage > Games and Apps. If the unfamiliar item is listed there, it occupies console or extended-storage space and can be removed with the supported delete command. This is the normal path for an unwanted game or application and does not require Safe Mode.
Account-linked service
If nothing suspicious is installed but a third-party store or service has access to the account, check Settings > Users and Accounts > Authorized Apps. An entry in this list represents an authorization, not necessarily a locally installed game. Select an unfamiliar service and choose Unlink > Yes, Unlink.

Why the distinction matters

A library listing by itself does not establish that a package is installed. Check Storage before deleting anything, and review the account separately if the service is not present there.
The safe removal sequence
1. Stop interacting with suspicious software
Do not launch an unknown title, type a PlayStation password into its prompts, or install an unofficial “unlock,” jailbreak, piracy, or cleaning utility. Such tools can expose credentials, alter system files, or create additional account and licensing problems. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Software Usage Terms state: You must not use any means to bypass or disable any encryption, security, or authentication mechanism for the Authorised Systems or any Software.
Disconnecting from the network is not a substitute for removal, but pausing downloads and refusing unexpected prompts prevents you from authorizing more activity while you identify the item.

- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Storage, then Games and Apps.
- Highlight the unfamiliar game or app and choose Delete.
- Confirm the deletion and wait for the item to disappear from the storage list.
This removes the selected local files. It does not, by itself, change an account password, revoke an external service’s authorization, or resolve an unknown payment. Those are separate account-security tasks below.
3. Install the current PS5 system software
After deleting the item, bring the console up to date using the supported updater: Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update. Let the console complete the update and restart if requested.
For a particular legitimate game, highlight the title on the home screen, press the Options button, and select Check for Update. A game update and a PS5 system update are separate checks; perform the one that matches the symptom rather than downloading an unofficial patch.
4. Rebuild the database only if deletion or errors persist
If the item will not delete, the home screen remains inconsistent, or games continue to report storage or launch errors, use the PS5’s supported Safe Mode repair:
- Turn the PS5 off completely.
- Press and hold the power button. Release it after the second beep to enter Safe Mode.
- Connect the controller if Safe Mode requests it, then choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Rebuild Database.
- Allow the process to finish without switching off the console.
Database rebuilding repairs the console’s filesystem index; it is not a jailbreak-removal tool and does not replace account-security work. If the console cannot reach the normal update screen, Sony’s USB recovery procedure requires a DualSense controller, a USB cable, and a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT containing the required update file. A PS5 USB cable is relevant to that recovery procedure only; it is not needed for ordinary deletion from Storage.

5. Reinstall only from a trusted source
If a legitimate game was damaged or its files were removed accidentally, reinstall it from the official Game Library or from a legitimate disc. Do not use a third-party store package to “repair” the installation.
When a purchased title will not download or start, verify that the signed-in account owns the game and use the console’s license-restoration option. A valid PlayStation license is distinct from the presence of local files: reinstalling files cannot grant ownership, and deleting files does not cancel a valid purchase.
6. Unlink an unfamiliar authorized service
- Open Settings.
- Choose Users and Accounts.
- Open Authorized Apps.
- Select the service you do not recognize.
- Choose Unlink, then confirm with Yes, Unlink.
Unlinking stops that service’s authorization. It does not delete a separately installed game, remove files from Storage, or automatically reverse a payment. Complete those tasks independently when they apply.

Treat an unknown authorization, changed account detail, or unfamiliar purchase as a possible account-compromise signal. In Account Management, review recent payments and account changes. Then:
- Change the account password, or switch to a passkey if that option is available to you.
- Use a unique password that is not reused on another service.
- Set a console login passcode.
- Require a password at checkout to prevent purchases made by someone using the console.
- Do not share account details. Sony’s security guidance says,
Never share your account details with anyone else.
Contact PlayStation Support promptly if you see an unknown payment, your details were changed, or suspicious activity continues after unlinking and changing credentials. Keep transaction information and the affected account email available for the support process.
8. Reset the console only as a last resort
Reset Your Console is the destructive option. Sony states that it erases data on the console’s storage, so back up saved data and other files first whenever the console still allows it. A reset is appropriate only when supported deletion, updating, database rebuilding, license checks, and account protection have not resolved a persistent software problem.
After a reset, install the PS5 system software and games only through official Sony channels. A reset cannot recover an account that is still compromised, so change credentials and address unknown payments even if you choose to wipe the console.

Use the smallest action that matches the evidence. A local item calls for deletion; an account authorization calls for unlinking; a damaged index calls for rebuilding; a complete reset belongs at the end of the process.

Troubleshooting common outcomes
The item is visible in the library but not in Storage
Do not force-delete system files or use a “cleaner.” The listing may represent account ownership or a service shortcut rather than an installed package. Check Authorized Apps, review Account Management for changes, and secure the account if anything is unfamiliar. If the title is legitimate, use the official Game Library or disc to restore it.
Delete is unavailable or the item returns
Finish any pending download or update, restart normally, and try the Storage path again. If the console still refuses the operation or displays database errors, enter Safe Mode and select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Rebuild Database. Do not escalate directly to a reset while a supported database repair is available.
The console cannot update normally
Use Safe Mode first when the normal updater will not complete. If an update must be supplied by USB, follow Sony’s recovery requirements: a DualSense controller connected with a USB cable and a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive containing the update file. The cable is part of controller recovery, not a special removal device.

A legitimate game was deleted
Reinstall from the official Game Library or a legitimate disc. If the download is blocked or the game appears unowned, check the purchasing account and restore licenses. Do not infer that an unauthorized store is required merely because the official installation is missing.
There is an unknown charge or changed account detail
Prioritize account recovery over further console experimentation. Change the password or use a passkey, enable the console login passcode, require a password at checkout, unlink unfamiliar authorized services, and contact PlayStation Support about the payment or changed details. A storage deletion cannot reverse an account transaction.
The PS5 still behaves suspiciously after a reset
Do not reinstall unofficial tools. Recheck account security from a trusted device, keep credentials private, and contact PlayStation Support. A reset removes console data, but it does not make an unsafe password or an unresolved payment dispute safe.
What not to do
- Do not enter your password into an unfamiliar game-store screen.
- Do not install jailbreak, piracy, unlock, or cleaning packages to remove another package.
- Do not interrupt a system update or Safe Mode database rebuild.
- Do not treat a PS5 USB cable as a general-purpose deletion solution.
- Do not reset before backing up data that the reset will erase.
- Do not share account details, even with someone claiming to provide technical help.
When official support is the right next step
Use PlayStation Support when the account shows an unknown payment, personal details changed without your approval, suspicious activity continues after password and authorization changes, or supported system recovery does not restore normal operation. Provide the account information and transaction details requested by support, and describe which supported steps you already completed. Avoid third-party “repair” services that ask for your password or propose bypassing PS5 security controls.
