The message “The disk is write protected. Remove the write-protection or use another disk.” means Windows is refusing write operations on a USB flash drive, SD card, or external hard drive. You can usually troubleshoot it without erasing anything, but the safe order matters: copy important files first, check for a physical lock, clear the disk’s read-only attribute, review Windows’ write-protection policy, and only then consider recovery or replacement.
What “write protected” means
A write-protected disk can normally be opened and read, but Windows rejects actions that change its contents. Copying files onto it, deleting files, renaming folders, or formatting the disk may all fail. The restriction can come from several layers:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Physical lock: SD cards commonly have a small lock tab. An adapter or reader can also report a locked state.
- Disk-level read-only attribute: Windows may have a read-only flag set on the removable disk.
- Windows policy or registry setting: A write-protection policy can block USB storage even when the disk attribute appears clear.
- Reader, adapter, or controller behavior: The card may work differently through another reader.
- Failing storage media: Flash storage can enter a permanent read-only mode when its controller detects a serious problem.
Clearing one software flag does not always change the device’s effective state. If the card or drive remains read-only everywhere, the hardware—not the Windows setting you changed—may be enforcing the lock.

Read-only behavior is frustrating, but it can also prevent further changes to data that is still recoverable. Before running repair commands, copy important files to another disk. Use File Explorer to copy the folders you cannot replace, and open several copied files to confirm that the copies work.

Do not begin with formatting or DiskPart’s clean command. Microsoft moderator guidance warns: “The clean command will clear all the data on the SD/USB disk. Please back up the data, if you want to clean the disk.” If copying fails or the disk disconnects during a copy, stop destructive operations and treat the contents as recovery data.
Step 1: Check for a physical lock and connection problem
Unlock an SD card
- Eject the SD card from Windows.
- Find the small lock tab on the card’s side.
- Slide the tab to the unlocked position. The tab should not be sitting at the end marked “Lock.”
- Reinsert the card and try a small, nonessential write.
If the card still reports write protection, test it with a different USB SD-card reader or adapter. A faulty reader can present a writable card as read-only. Testing another reader is a diagnostic step, not a repair to the card itself.
Check other removable drives
For a USB flash drive or external hard drive, disconnect it safely and reconnect it. If you are using an adapter, test the drive without that adapter when possible. Use the drive’s capacity and label to make sure you are working with the intended device before moving to command-line steps.

- Open Start, type Terminal or Command Prompt, right-click the result, and choose Run as administrator.
- Enter
diskpartand press Enter. - List the connected disks:
list disk
Compare the capacities in the list with the removable drive. Do not select a disk by number alone: selecting the wrong disk can affect your Windows installation or another drive.
- Select the removable disk, replacing the value with the number you verified:
select disk <disk-number>
- Display its attributes:
attributes disk
DiskPart reports whether the disk is read-only and also shows its current read-only state. If the correct disk is selected, clear the disk attribute:
attributes disk clear readonly
A successful operation reports “Disk attributes cleared successfully.” Then leave DiskPart:

Remove and reconnect the drive, or close and reopen File Explorer, and test with a small, nonessential file. Clearing this attribute is comparatively low risk when the correct disk was selected; it does not erase the disk.

Step 3: Check Windows’ write-protection policy
If DiskPart clears the attribute but Windows still rejects writes, a registry policy may be enforcing read-only storage. Registry editing requires administrator rights, and a restart may be needed before the change takes effect.
- Open the Run dialog with Windows key + R, type
regedit, and press Enter. - Back up the registry before editing. In Registry Editor, use File > Export and save the backup somewhere on your internal drive.
- Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlStorageDevicePolicies. - Find the
WriteProtectvalue and set it to0. - Close Registry Editor and restart Windows if the drive remains locked.
Microsoft answers also reference the USBSTOR service when investigating USB storage restrictions. Do not change unrelated service or registry values merely because they contain the word “storage”; make only the documented write-protection change and keep your backup until the drive works.
Step 4: Test with a small, nonessential write
After reconnecting the disk, create a small text file, copy it to the removable drive, rename it, and delete it. These actions test writing, renaming, and deletion separately. Use a file you do not need; do not test by moving the only copy of an important document.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf the test succeeds, the software lock was cleared. If Windows still refuses every write, do not jump to clean or formatting. First determine whether the lock follows the storage media or the reader.

When the software fixes do not work
“Current Read-only State” remains enabled
DiskPart can show that the read-only attribute was cleared while the Current Read-only State remains Yes. That result indicates that another layer is enforcing read-only mode. Possible sources include the SD-card reader, an adapter, the storage controller, or failing flash media.
Use another reader to isolate the cause
Test the same SD card in a different USB SD-card reader or adapter. If it becomes writable, the first reader or adapter is the likely cause. If it remains read-only in multiple readers and on multiple computers, the card itself is more likely to be enforcing the state.
Decide whether the files justify professional recovery
For valuable or irreplaceable files, stop before formatting and seek a professional data-recovery service. Tell the service that the media is readable but write-protected and that no destructive commands have been run. Recovery should happen before attempts to rebuild or erase the disk.
Formatting and the DiskPart clean command
Formatting creates a new file-system structure and removes the files that were on the volume. DiskPart’s clean command goes further by clearing disk information; Microsoft explicitly states that it clears all data on the selected SD or USB disk. Neither operation preserves files, and neither should be treated as a first-line write-protection repair.

Only consider formatting after you have copied or recovered everything you need, the disk is not valuable as evidence, and you have confirmed the correct disk. If formatting also fails because the current read-only state cannot be changed, the media may have reached a hardware-enforced end of life.
When replacement is the right answer
If the drive remains locked through different readers and computers after your files are safe, replace the storage device after recovery. A new writable flash drive is safer than continuing to trust media that has entered permanent read-only mode. Replacement does not restore the old disk; it simply gives you a reliable destination for the recovered files and future backups.
Keep at least one additional copy of important files on another disk. A write-protected device can still fail as a reader, disconnect, or become inaccessible, so read-only access should not be treated as a backup strategy.

Stop conditions that prevent permanent data loss
- Stop if you cannot copy important files and the data exists nowhere else.
- Stop if DiskPart’s current read-only state remains enabled after clearing the attribute.
- Stop if a different reader does not change the behavior and the media contains valuable files.
- Do not run
cleanor format until recovery or backup is complete. - Replace the device after recovery when it remains locked across readers and computers.
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues, adjust settings that affect CPU, RAM and disk load, clear temporary and cache files, and provide vulnerability checks and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; its free trial is offered by category for at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, and results vary—no tool repairs every write-protection failure.
