For bugs sealed inside a wall or attic cavity, do not rely on indoor sprays or foggers: they may not reach the insects, can leave carcasses that attract carpet beetles, and do not stop new bugs from entering. Exclusion is the durable fix; the right timing depends on local insect activity.
This guidance is for U.S. households and focuses mainly on brown marmorated stink bugs (BMSB). Other species and local seasons can differ. Indoors, BMSB are generally a nuisance rather than a structural threat: Iowa State Extension says they do not reproduce indoors or cause structural or cosmetic damage. Choose the method by where the bugs are

Vacuum without crushing
Use a vacuum to collect visible insects, then promptly empty or dispose of the captured bugs in a way suited to the machine. Iowa State advises promptly removing and discarding the vacuum bag. Vacuuming can still leave an odor, so a dedicated or easily cleaned vacuum may be preferable to a household machine. A wet/dry shop vacuum is one option for reachable bugs, not a tool for sealed cavities. Never put water or soapy water into equipment unless its design permits liquid collection. Capture individually when only a few are present
NC State Extension describes collecting a bug in a jar and then freezing it or drowning it in soapy water. It also notes that a dedicated vacuum container may be frozen. Follow the vacuum maker’s instructions; freezing a removable container is not suitable for every model. NC State Extension
Handle insects concealed in a wall or attic cavity
Do not treat a wall void or hidden attic aggregation as an ordinary indoor spray job. Penn State, Maryland, and Washington State guidance cautions against indoor insecticide treatments or foggers for these sheltered locations. The insects may remain out of reach, and carcasses in a void can provide food for carpet beetles, which may damage woolens, stored dry goods, and other natural materials. - Note where bugs emerge into rooms and vacuum those reachable insects.
- Inspect the outside of the building for openings they may be using.
- Seal appropriate gaps and repair screens at a season that will not trap insects inside.
- If the problem is extensive, recurring, or requires opening a building cavity, consider an inspection by a licensed local pest-management professional. No particular service or outcome is guaranteed.
Seal entry points, with seasonal timing in mind
Inspect window and door frames, damaged screens, siding gaps, utility-pipe and wire penetrations, fascia, eaves, and attic louvers or vents. Use caulk, weatherstripping, or screen repair appropriate to the opening and surface. Do not block roof, soffit, or attic ventilation.

Timing matters because sealing can trap insects already inside. NC State’s regional guidance is to let bugs leave in spring and seal before their late-August return attempt; it warns that exclusion in fall, winter, or early spring may trap them indoors. Indoor foggers and sprays are not a reliable fix for bugs concealed in wall or attic spaces. Maryland says pesticides are generally ineffective and not recommended for home control, and warns against foggers or spraying cracks as a way to prevent entry. University of Maryland Extension

Professional exterior treatment is a limited possibility, not a substitute for exclusion. Penn State describes applications by a licensed operator before autumn aggregation when complete sealing is difficult, while noting that sunlight shortens residual effectiveness. Cornell describes perimeter applications during severe outdoor gatherings as an extreme option with safety and air-quality concerns. Neither recommendation supports indiscriminate indoor treatment of hidden insects. Follow the current pesticide label and local regulations for any product used.
