To avoid silence between podcast episodes on a YouTube Live stream, make the playback source feeding your encoder play continuously. In OBS, use a looping Media Source for one episode or a VLC Video playlist for several. YouTube’s watch page does not control how one file hands off to the next, and OBS does not promise gapless transitions between separate files—test your actual episode sequence before relying on it live.
Choose the right OBS source

Set up continuous episode playback in OBS
Prepare and check the episode files
- Put the episodes in the intended playback order and confirm each file opens and plays correctly. OBS Media Source supports common audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV, as well as common video formats.
- Listen to the end of each episode and the start of the next. A silent tail in one file or a quiet opening in the next can sound like a transition gap even when the playlist is advancing.
Loop one episode with Media Source
- In OBS, add a Media Source and select the local episode file.
- Enable Loop if the episode should restart automatically when playback completes.
- Check the source’s audio in the OBS mixer and monitor a complete end-to-start cycle before going live.
Play multiple episodes with VLC Video
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. For 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC so the VLC Video source is available.
- Add a VLC Video source in OBS and add the episode files to its playlist in the order you want.
- Leave Shuffle Playlist off to preserve that order.
- Enable Loop Playlist so playback returns to the first episode after the last one. OBS documents this setting as on by default, but verify it in your source.
- Monitor the full transition between files in the OBS output. If you still hear silence, inspect the files and the playback chain rather than assuming YouTube’s delivery protocol will fix it.
Test the transitions before going live
OBS documents looping and playlist playback, but does not state that transitions between separate files are gapless or crossfaded. Test the actual files in the scene and output you intend to stream. If there is a pause, check for silence at the end of the outgoing episode, silence at the beginning of the incoming episode, or a delay in how the playback source advances. Do not treat a playlist’s loop setting as a guarantee of seamless audio.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or schedule a live stream. YouTube says scheduling lets you promote the stream and gives viewers the option to set reminders.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream into the corresponding encoder settings in OBS. Keep the stream key private.
- Start the stream from OBS and confirm in YouTube Studio that the live feed is arriving and that episode audio is audible.

Plan for long runs and replays
YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If your always-on run may exceed 12 hours, plan how you will handle segmentation and replays; do not assume that the full run will be saved as one automatic archive. This is YouTube’s stated platform threshold, not a guarantee about every stream or archive outcome.
Does HLS remove the silence?
No documented evidence here says that changing YouTube’s ingestion protocol removes gaps between playlist files. HLS is an optional ingestion protocol for compatible encoders, with its own delivery requirements; it does not replace configuring continuous playback at the source. YouTube’s HLS setup guide specifies TS segments of one to four seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. YouTube also notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP.
