How to Remove Seam Lines and Fix Gaps on a Plastic Model Kit

Remove a plastic model-kit defect by identifying what you are looking at first. A raised ridge on one molded part is excess plastic: scrape or sand it away. A line where two parts meet is a joint seam: if the parts fit and the plastic is compatible with solvent cement, bond the joint, let it set, and sand the squeezed-out bead flush. An opening, step, or missing section is a gap: correct the alignment, then add material with an appropriate filler.

The safest sequence is fit and inspect, choose a repair method, protect nearby detail, allow adhesives or fillers to cure, sand from coarse to fine, and use primer to reveal what remains. The grit numbers and products below are useful starting points, not a universal formula for every plastic, scale, or finish.

Identify the defect before touching the surface

Different-looking lines need different repairs. Removing plastic from a gap makes it worse, while spreading filler over a raised mold ridge creates unnecessary work. Examine the part under a strong light and run a fingertip across the line before choosing a tool.

What you see Likely defect First action
A narrow ridge running along one molded part Mold seam or flash Scrape or file the ridge down, then sand it smooth.
A line where two kit halves meet, with little or no opening Joint seam Check the fit. Compatible styrene parts can be bonded and sanded as one surface.
An opening, step, depression, or uneven edge between parts Gap or misalignment Dry-fit and realign first; fill only after the fit is as good as possible.
A crisp recessed line shown consistently on both sides Intentional panel line or structural separation Leave it in place unless the instructions or reference clearly show it should be removed.

This is a practical distinction rather than a complete catalog of every kit defect. Some surfaces combine a seam, a step, and a shallow sink mark, so repair them in stages instead of applying one thick layer of filler.

Prepare the work safely

Check the plastic and adhesive

Solvent cement is intended for specific plastics. Tamiya describes its model cement as being for assembling styrene models; do not assume the same cement will bond every kit plastic, resin part, clear piece, or accessory. Read the product label, identify the material when the manufacturer states it, and test an inconspicuous area or a spare runner if compatibility is uncertain.

Bandai’s official Gunpla tutorial gives this safety instruction: “Most importantly! Please do this in a well-ventilated area; open a window or a door.” Use ventilation whenever working with cement or solvent-bearing products. Keep the cap closed between applications, avoid skin and eye contact, and do not treat a pleasant odor as evidence that exposure is harmless.

Gather controlled tools

  • A sharp hobby knife or purpose-made scraper for raised ridges.
  • Small files or sanding sticks for flat and confined areas.
  • Abrasives in several grades, beginning around 400–600 grit and finishing at 1000 grit or finer when appropriate.
  • Plastic model cement for a confirmed compatible styrene joint.
  • Basic model putty for shallow seams and minor surface imperfections.
  • Two-part epoxy putty for bridging a broader gap or rebuilding a missing area.
  • A gap-filling cyanoacrylate product when that method suits the repair and your finishing plan.
  • Masking tape or a thin protective barrier to keep filler and abrasives away from nearby detail.
  • Primer for the inspection coat on a painted build.

Use eye protection when scraping or sanding, and clean dust from the model and work surface before applying primer or paint.

Step-by-step seam and gap repair workflow

  1. Dry-fit the parts. Assemble them without adhesive and inspect the joint from several angles. Remove ejector marks, flash, or obstruction that prevents the halves from closing.
  2. Mark what must remain. Do not sand away panel lines, rivets, raised ribs, or sharp corners that are part of the design. Mask or draw a visual boundary beside the repair if necessary.
  3. Choose the method by defect. Remove excess plastic from a ridge, bond a well-fitting styrene joint, or add filler to a true gap. A filler should not be the first response to poor alignment.
  4. Apply the minimum material. Put cement on the mating edges, or place a controlled bead of filler only where material is missing. Keep product off clear parts and fine molded detail.
  5. Allow the repair to set. Cement and fillers do not all dry at the same speed. Follow the specific product directions rather than sanding by the clock.
  6. Level the repair. Begin with a controlled abrasive or scraper, using short strokes and light pressure. Work across the defect without digging into the surrounding plastic.
  7. Refine the surface. Move through finer abrasives until scratches from the previous grade are gone. Stop before the surrounding profile changes.
  8. Inspect under primer or strong light. On a painted build, primer exposes scratches, pinholes, and a ghost seam. Correct those defects before applying the finish color.
  9. Restore detail if needed. If a panel line or edge was softened, re-establish it with an appropriate modeling tool only after the surface is level.

Remove a raised mold seam without flattening the part

A raised mold ridge is excess plastic, so the repair is subtractive. Hold the part securely and place the scraper or knife nearly perpendicular to the ridge. Take several light passes rather than one deep cut. A file or sanding stick can follow, especially on a flat area.

On a rounded part, sand along the curve and rotate the part often. If you keep the abrasive in one spot, you can create a flat patch that is more visible than the original seam. Use a narrow stick for a narrow ridge and a broader, flexible abrasive where the surface must remain gently convex.

Stop when the ridge is gone and the transition looks continuous under angled light. If a shallow depression remains, treat that as a surface imperfection and add a thin layer of suitable putty instead of continuing to remove plastic.

Blend a well-fitting styrene joint with model cement

This method works when the two edges meet cleanly and the parts are compatible with solvent cement. It is not a universal repair for unknown plastics or a substitute for material that is missing.

Bandai’s squeeze-and-sand sequence

  1. If the part is already assembled and the seam must be treated from inside the joint, open it carefully without damaging locating pins or details.
  2. Apply hobby cement to the mating edges. Use enough to wet the joint, not enough to flood the exterior.
  3. Close the part and squeeze the halves together until they bond. A small bead of softened plastic should appear along the seam.
  4. Leave the joint undisturbed until the cement has bonded. Bandai notes that some cements dry faster than others and that multiple coats may be needed depending on the cement.
  5. Once set, level the bead with a scraper or abrasive, then polish the area with finer grades.

Bandai recommends starting this cleanup around 400–600 grit and following with 1000-grit or finer abrasive for polishing. Treat those numbers as its Gunpla tutorial sequence, not a guarantee for every kit, cement, scale, or paint system. If the joint still opens after sanding, stop and fix the underlying fit rather than repeatedly filling the moving seam.

Choose filler by gap size and shape

Repair option Best-supported use Important trade-off
Scraping, filing, or sanding Raised mold ridge or hardened seam bead It removes plastic and can erase detail or flatten curves if uncontrolled.
Styrene model cement Well-fitting, compatible styrene joint Needs compatible material, ventilation, and time to bond; it is not a general-purpose gap filler.
Basic model putty Shallow seams and minor surface imperfections Tamiya explicitly says its Basic Type Putty is not intended for large gaps.
Two-part epoxy putty Bridging larger gaps, reshaping, and repairs Requires thorough mixing and product-specific curing time; excess must be shaped and sanded.
Gap-filling cyanoacrylate An alternative seam filler described by FineScale Modeler Behavior varies by product; apply sparingly and control the sanding dust and surrounding finish.

Basic putty for shallow seams

Use a basic model putty when the joint is nearly closed and only a shallow depression or scratch needs added material. Press a thin amount into the defect, feather the edges, and remove excess from adjacent detail before it hardens. Tamiya’s Basic Type Putty guidance specifically limits it to seams and surface imperfections rather than large gaps. Forcing a thick mass into a wide opening can leave a weak, slow-curing repair or make the surrounding surface harder to shape.

Epoxy putty for broader gaps and rebuilt areas

A two-part epoxy putty is suited to bridging a larger opening, extending an edge, or rebuilding a missing section. Mix the components according to the label, press the putty into the void, and shape it before it fully hardens. Tamiya describes its Smooth Surface epoxy putty for bridging gaps, modifications, and repairs. Do not assume its working or cure time applies to another epoxy product.

Use a tool or dampened surface only if the product instructions allow it. Leave a little extra material where the repair must be sanded back to a precise contour, but avoid a large overfill that obscures nearby panel lines.

Gap-filling cyanoacrylate as an alternative

FineScale Modeler describes gap-filling super glue as another seam-filling option. It can be useful where a hard, thin repair is easier to control than putty, but the product’s viscosity, cure behavior, and sanding characteristics vary. Apply a small bead, let it cure as directed, and test the finish on a scrap piece before using it beside delicate detail or a transparent part.

Correct alignment before filling a visible gap

A gap caused by a part sitting at the wrong angle will usually reopen or produce a step after filler is sanded. Remove the part if necessary, clean the mating surfaces, and check locating pins, tabs, and internal obstructions. Dry-fit repeatedly until the outside contour and the important edges line up.

When the pieces cannot meet because material is genuinely absent, stabilize the alignment first. A temporary tape wrap or clamp can hold the shape while cement bonds a compatible joint. Do not overtighten a clamp: squeezing can distort a thin shell and create a new misalignment on the opposite side.

Sand in stages while preserving detail

Use a progression, not one aggressive grade

Bandai’s cleanup sequence uses 400–600 grit followed by 1000 grit or finer. Tamiya lists plastic-model abrasives from approximately #100 through #2,000 and #3,000. The correct starting grade depends on how much material must be removed: a heavy bead may need a coarser grade, while a nearly invisible seam may only need a fine stick. The goal is to remove the previous scratch pattern, not to use every available number.

Stage Typical action Control point
Leveling Use a scraper, file, or roughly 400–600 grit abrasive on a hardened bead or raised filler. Keep the tool moving and check the surrounding profile often.
Blending Move to a finer grade once the repair is flush. Sand a slightly wider area with lighter pressure so there is no sharp transition.
Polishing Use 1000 grit or finer for a paint-ready surface, adjusting to the intended finish. Remove the earlier scratches without rounding edges.

Protect curves, edges, and recessed lines

  • Use a sanding stick or rigid backing on flat surfaces so the repair does not become a shallow valley.
  • Use a flexible or narrow abrasive on convex curves and move it along the contour.
  • Mask panel lines and raised details before sanding close to them.
  • Sand across a seam only as much as needed; broad, repeated strokes can soften an entire panel.
  • Wipe or brush away dust before judging whether the seam is gone.

Decide between wet and dry sanding

FineScale notes that wet sanding can keep a sanding stick from clogging. Water is not automatically appropriate for every filler, however: some putties soften or break up when wet. Follow the filler’s directions and use dry sanding when the product calls for it. Keep water away from unprotected electronics, metal fittings that can corrode, and areas where it could carry residue into a joint.

Use primer as an inspection coat, not as a gap filler

On a painted build, a thin, even coat of surface primer can reveal scratches, pinholes, and a ghost seam that is difficult to see on bare plastic. Tamiya describes surface primer as covering minute imperfections and preparing the surface for a topcoat. Let the primer dry as directed, inspect it under angled light, and spot-repair any defect that remains.

Primer will not replace material in a substantial opening. If the outline of a gap is still visible after priming, return to filler and sanding rather than adding repeated primer coats that bury detail.

Finish considerations for colored, clear, and metal parts

Unpainted colored plastic

Scraping, sanding, and solvent cement can change the color, sheen, or texture of a molded part. The consulted manufacturer guidance does not establish a guaranteed invisible, no-paint repair for every plastic and color. Test on a hidden area or spare runner, and plan for a visible repair or a painted finish if the surface cannot be matched.

Clear parts

Keep cement, putty, and coarse abrasives away from transparent pieces unless the product is specifically intended for them. Mask the part before repairing a neighboring seam. If a clear surface becomes rough, a polishing compound can help smooth a rough finish, but it is a finishing aid rather than a gap filler. Tamiya’s product information describes that use on rough plastic surfaces, including clear or metal parts: Tamiya polishing compound product page.

Metal and mixed-material assemblies

Do not assume a solvent cement designed for styrene will bond a metal fitting or a different engineering plastic. Use the adhesive specified for the materials involved, and test the joint before committing the visible side of the model.

Troubleshoot the repair before repainting

Symptom Likely cause Corrective action
The seam reappears after sanding The halves were still moving, or the joint was not fully bonded. Recheck alignment, rebond a compatible joint, and allow the cement to set before leveling.
A wide gap keeps showing through basic putty The filler was used beyond its intended depth. Use an appropriate structural repair, such as two-part epoxy putty, after correcting the fit.
A flat spot appears on a rounded part Too much pressure or sanding in one location. Stop, compare the profile from several angles, and rebuild the low area with a suitable filler if needed.
Panel lines become shallow or disappear Abrasive or filler crossed the detail. Protect detail earlier and restore the line only after the surface is stable.
Scratches remain under primer The surface skipped from a coarse grade to primer too soon. Return to a finer progression and remove the previous scratch pattern.
Putty smears or crumbles during wet sanding The product is sensitive to water or has not cured sufficiently. Follow its label, allow more cure time, and switch to dry sanding when directed.
The repaired area is visible on an unpainted part Sanding or solvent changed the molded color or texture. Accept the limitation, test a color-matched finish, or paint the part.

A quick method-selection checklist

  • Raised ridge only: scrape, file, and sand; do not add filler unless a depression remains.
  • Nearly closed styrene joint: use compatible model cement, squeeze the halves together, let the bead set, then sand.
  • Shallow seam or pinhole: use a thin application of basic model putty and blend the edges.
  • Large opening or missing corner: correct alignment and use a two-part epoxy putty intended for bridging and repairs.
  • Alternative hard filler: consider gap-filling cyanoacrylate when its product behavior suits the location and finish.
  • Painted finish: prime, inspect, and repair remaining scratches before color coats.
  • Unpainted colored finish: test first; there is no guaranteed invisible method across all plastics and colors.

How to judge the finished repair

Run a clean fingertip across the area, then inspect it under a strong light from several directions. The surface should transition continuously, edges should remain sharp where the design calls for them, and intentional recesses should still have consistent depth. On a primed model, look for a line that changes brightness as you tilt the part; that often indicates a remaining step or scratch rather than a harmless color difference.

Once the repair passes that inspection, remove dust and proceed with your normal paint preparation. If it fails, identify whether the problem is excess plastic, missing material, movement, or sanding damage. Returning to that diagnosis is faster and safer than applying another generic coat of filler.
