For a light orange film or rust-like stain, first follow the tool maker’s care instructions, then use a polishing cloth or gentle non-metallic abrasive, remove all residue, dry every joint completely, and apply the lubricant specified for the tool. After saltwater exposure, rinse with fresh water before drying and oiling. Surface cleaning will not reliably repair deep pitting, missing metal, seized joints, or damage to an unknown coating; those cases need the manufacturer or a qualified repair service.
“Stainless steel is not rust proof; it is corrosion-resistant,” Leatherman explains in its maintenance guidance. Treat a multi-tool as corrosion-resistant equipment that still needs cleaning, drying, and lubrication—not as a tool that can be left wet indefinitely.

Identify the tool before you clean it
Multi-tools differ in steel, coatings, handle materials, fasteners, and joint construction. Find the brand and exact model before choosing a cleaner or abrasive, and read the current care instructions for that model. Advice for one manufacturer is not a blanket approval for every multi-tool.

- Check the finish. Note whether the affected area is bare stainless steel, a coating, a painted surface, or a component containing plastic. A method that is acceptable on bare steel can dull or strip another finish.
- Classify the damage. A thin orange or brown film with an intact surface is a light stain. Craters, flaking, sharp edges, a loose pivot, or a joint that remains stuck after dirt is removed indicate deeper corrosion or mechanical damage.
Leatherman says its tools use high-grade stainless steel but also notes that the screw bits supplied for its tool adapter are tool steel. Do not assume that every part of a particular tool has the same alloy or corrosion behavior.

What to have ready
- A clean polishing cloth or microfiber cloth.
- A gentle, non-metallic abrasive approved by the maker, such as the Scotch-Brite pad or soft-bristle brush named in Leatherman’s care instructions.
- A manufacturer-approved way to remove dirt or sticky residue.
- Fresh water when the tool has encountered salt or seawater.
- A suitable light oil for moisture displacement or corrosion protection, and, where specified, a PTFE (Teflon)-based lubricant for pivots and wear points.
- A dry work surface with good lighting so you can see residue inside joints.
Gloves can protect your hands from grime, but they do not make an open blade safe. Keep the tool stable and handle each implement deliberately.
Step-by-step: remove light surface rust
1. Photograph and inspect the starting condition
Take a quick picture if the tool may be covered by a service agreement or warranty. Look for pits, flaking, discoloration under a coating, damaged fasteners, and movement that is restricted by more than surface dirt. If you see material loss or a seized mechanism, skip abrasive cleaning and read the service section below.
2. Remove loose dirt without forcing the joints
Brush or wipe away grit around the pivots and tool channels. Do not grind a dirty surface: trapped particles can scratch a polished finish while you work. Use only the cleaning method permitted by the maker of your model.
3. Polish the stain gently
For a stained Leatherman surface, the company recommends buffing with a polishing cloth or a non-metallic abrasive, including a Scotch-Brite pad or soft-bristle brush. Use light pressure and short passes, staying on the discolored area rather than scouring the entire tool. The aim is to lift the surface deposit, not to reshape the steel or create a bright patch that contrasts with the surrounding finish.

Check your progress frequently. If the color remains but the metal is smooth, do not automatically switch to a harsher abrasive. A coating, stonewash texture, bead-blasted surface, or printed marking may be altered before the corrosion is gone. When the manufacturer does not identify a safe abrasive for your finish, stop and ask the manufacturer or a repair professional.
4. Deal with sticky or dirty blades using the model’s instructions
Victorinox’s official care instructions describe moving dirty or sticky blades in warm water until they move freely, then drying the tool completely and placing a drop of oil at friction surfaces. The same instructions state: “Multi-tools should never be cleaned in a dishwasher.” Dishwasher heat, detergent, and prolonged water exposure can attack finishes, lubricants, and non-metal components.
That warm-water procedure is Victorinox guidance; it is not permission to immerse an unidentified tool. If your manufacturer does not authorize water cleaning, use its specified method instead and keep liquid away from components that are not designed for it.

Wipe away loosened rust, abrasive dust, and cleaner residue with a clean cloth. Residue left in a pivot can combine with moisture and form an abrasive paste. Do not leave a film of an unapproved solvent on plastic scales, liners, or coatings.
6. Dry every part of the mechanism
Dry the outside first, then work each joint through its normal range while you wipe around the pivot and between nested tools. Pay attention to channels, tangs, and the spaces where implements fold into the handles. The official instructions reviewed do not set a universal drying time or require compressed air, so judge completion by the absence of visible moisture and by the tool’s construction. Do not oil over trapped water.

7. Lubricate the correct places with the correct type of oil
Apply a small amount to friction points and moving pivots, then cycle the joint so the lubricant spreads. Leatherman distinguishes between two jobs:
| Job | Lubricant guidance | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Displacing moisture in joints | Leatherman names low-viscosity oils such as WD-40, Liquid Wrench, and CRC 3-36. | These are Leatherman’s suggestions for its products, not universal compatibility guarantees. |
| Pivoting or wear areas | Leatherman recommends a PTFE/Teflon-based lubricant. | Use the product and quantity allowed by the tool maker; excess oil attracts dirt. |
| Victorinox friction surfaces | Victorinox recommends a drop of oil at friction surfaces. | Its own Multi Tool Oil is described as a corrosion-protecting lubricant for pocket knives and lists a 10 ml size and NSF H1 status. |
The Victorinox oil is listed on the company’s product page for Multi Tool Oil 4.3302. Product availability and regional labeling can change, so check the current page and your tool’s instructions.

8. Wipe excess and verify safe operation
Remove oil that has pooled on handles, blade flats, or tool openings. Open and close each implement slowly, checking for gritty resistance, uneven movement, or a joint that loosens excessively. A blade should lock and fold as designed; lubrication must not substitute for a damaged lock or bent component.
Protocol after saltwater or marine exposure
Salt deposits accelerate corrosion and can remain in crevices after the surface looks dry. Leatherman’s direction is explicit: “If so, rinse in fresh water, dry, and lubricate it with a light oil.” Perform that sequence as soon as practical after exposure.

- Keep the tool controlled and blades closed where possible.
- Rinse away seawater and salt residue with fresh water using the method allowed for the model.
- Work the joints only as needed to release trapped residue; do not force a joint that binds.
- Dry the exterior, pivots, channels, and spaces between implements completely.
- Apply the appropriate light oil, then wipe away the excess.
A fresh-water rinse removes salt; it does not restore metal already lost to pitting. If orange corrosion returns immediately or a joint remains rough, move to the deeper-damage guidance rather than repeating increasingly aggressive polishing.
What not to use without specific approval
- Acetone or brake cleaner on an unverified tool. Leatherman warns these solvents may damage plastic components. They can also affect coatings, adhesives, and printed markings.
- Metal scouring pads, wire wheels, or heavy sanding. These can remove the finish, round edges, and leave scratches that hold moisture. The manufacturer’s gentle non-metallic options are safer for the stained surfaces they cover.
- Acids, rust converters, or household descalers. The official guidance reviewed does not establish a universal acid or converter treatment for multi-tools. Such chemicals may attack dissimilar metals, coatings, or springs.
- Dishwashers. Victorinox specifically prohibits dishwasher cleaning for multi-tools.
- Uncontrolled soaking. Do not immerse a model unless its maker’s instructions allow that method and identify how to dry and relubricate it.
Never mix cleaning chemicals in an attempt to make a stronger rust remover. If a product label does not clearly cover the tool’s materials, contact the manufacturer first.

Light staining versus pitting: choose the right response
| Observed condition | Reasonable next step | Do not promise |
|---|---|---|
| Thin orange film; smooth metal; tools move normally | Maker-approved cloth or gentle non-metallic abrasive, residue removal, complete drying, and correct lubrication. | A factory-new appearance on every finish. |
| Rust in a pivot but no visible crater | Clean according to the model’s instructions, dry the joint, and apply the specified pivot lubricant. Recheck movement. | That oil will repair worn or bent hardware. |
| Dark craters, flaking, sharp corrosion edges, or missing metal | Stop abrasive work and ask the manufacturer or a qualified repair service about replacement or restoration. | That polishing can replace lost material. |
| Joint seized or blade will not lock correctly | Keep the tool closed if safe and obtain professional assessment. | Forcing the mechanism safely or restoring lock geometry with oil. |
| Unknown coating, plastic component, or mixed-metal construction | Use only documented care instructions for the exact model. | Compatibility based on another brand’s instructions. |
Prevent rust from returning
Dry after every wet event
Water left in a pivot or folded channel can remain out of sight after the handles feel dry. After rain, washing, sweat-heavy use, or marine exposure, open the implements as the design permits, wipe the joints, and inspect the recesses before storage. Saltwater requires the fresh-water rinse described above.
Keep a thin protective film, not a puddle of oil
Use a small amount of the lubricant intended for the relevant job and wipe away what the mechanism does not need. Low-viscosity oil can help displace moisture in a Leatherman joint, while PTFE-based lubricant is intended for pivoting or wear areas; Victorinox directs users to place a drop at friction surfaces. These distinctions matter because a heavy, sticky coating can hold grit even while it appears protective.
Inspect instead of relying on a fixed calendar
Leatherman says its products should be cleaned, dried, and relubricated periodically to inhibit rust and corrosion, but the guidance does not set one interval for every user. Inspect more often when the tool is carried in a humid environment, exposed to salt, or used around chemicals. A quick inspection should check for fresh orange spots, stiff movement, salt crystals, and oil that has collected dust.

Store the tool clean and ventilated
Put the tool away only after it is dry and free of abrasive residue. Avoid sealing a damp multi-tool in a wet pouch or pocket. Storage conditions, the sheath material, and local humidity affect how quickly corrosion can develop, so there is no single universal storage interval or humidity threshold supported by the manufacturer instructions cited here.
Optional maintenance products
A dedicated kit is convenient but not required. Leatherman’s Tool Maintenance Kit page lists cleaning supplies, a cleaning mat, a microfiber cloth, lubrication oil, and a blade sharpener. Those contents can organize routine care; they do not make deep pitting repairable at home.
For a single tool, a compatible cloth or soft brush and the maker-approved oil may be all you need. Choose by material and function rather than by the word “rust” on a label: moisture displacement, corrosion protection, and pivot lubrication are related but different jobs.
When to contact the manufacturer or a repair service
Stop home treatment when corrosion has removed metal, a spring or fastener is compromised, a blade will not lock, a pivot remains seized after approved cleaning, or the finish and material are unknown. The official sources reviewed do not provide one universal restoration process for these cases. Send the exact model, photographs, and a description of exposure and symptoms when requesting guidance.
Check warranty terms before paying for work. Leatherman’s warranty page states that rust, oxidation, and other corrosion are not covered under its warranty; terms can differ by product and jurisdiction, so verify the conditions that apply to your tool. A manufacturer may still offer paid service or parts even when corrosion is excluded from warranty coverage.
