Wipe rainbow discoloration from a cooled stainless steel pan with white vinegar and a soft cloth or sponge, then rinse and dry it. The tint is commonly heat-related and cosmetic; if vinegar does not remove it, a cookware cleanser may help, provided you follow its label and your pan maker’s care instructions.
Why stainless steel cookware turns rainbow-colored
Blue, gold, bronze, or iridescent marks are commonly described as heat tint. Hestan explains that high heat can form a thin oxide layer on the metal, creating the rainbow effect, and says the discoloration is cosmetic and does not affect cookware performance. All-Clad says extended exposure above 500°F can change stainless steel’s color without affecting performance. That temperature is All-Clad’s guidance, not a universal threshold for every pan. A mark’s appearance alone cannot confirm its cause in a particular case.

For its cookware, All-Clad recommends wiping blue or rainbow coloring with white vinegar using a sponge or soft cloth. All-Clad’s care guide also advises cooling the pan before cleaning and drying it after washing.

Remove the discoloration gently
1. Cool, wash, and dry the pan
Let the pan cool before cleaning. Rinse away loose food with warm water, then wash with soap and a sponge or soft cloth. Dry it promptly to help prevent water spots, following any different instructions from your cookware maker.

2. Wipe the rainbow mark with white vinegar
Dampen a soft cloth or sponge with white vinegar and wipe the discolored area. Tramontina describes using equal parts white vinegar and water for lighter rainbow marks; if your pan maker gives different directions, use those instead. Rinse the pan and dry it. Tramontina’s care advice supports this diluted-vinegar option.
3. Use a cookware cleanser only if the mark remains
A cookware-specific cleanser is an optional next step, not a requirement if vinegar removes the tint. Bar Keepers Friend says its Cookware Cleanser & Polish is intended for cookware discoloration. Its directions say to sprinkle the product on a wet surface, rub gently with a wet cloth or sponge, and rinse thoroughly within one minute. For a difficult stain, its label allows a paste for up to one minute.

Other options and what to avoid
Vinegar-and-water boil
KitchenAid suggests boiling a vinegar-and-water mixture if interior discoloration remains, but its cited guidance does not specify a ratio or duration. Do not guess those details; check the pan maker’s instructions before trying this method. KitchenAid’s stainless cookware cleaning guidance describes the option.
Citric acid
WAHEI FREIZ gives a more intensive method using a 10% citric-acid solution—ten parts water to one part citric acid—boiled for about ten minutes. This is brand-specific guidance, not a universal recommendation. Check your cookware maker’s instructions before using it. WAHEI FREIZ’s instructions provide the method.

Skip steel wool and harsh cleaners
All-Clad cautions against oven cleaners, steel wool, steel scouring pads, harsh detergents, and detergents containing bleach or peroxide. Hestan also advises against steel wool and abrasive pads, which can scratch or dull the finish. Use a soft cloth or sponge instead.
Rainbow tint is not the same as burnt food or water spots
Cleaning advice depends on the mark. All-Clad gives separate instructions for white hard-water spots and burnt-on food, including vinegar-water boiling for white spots and baking soda for burnt food. Those treatments are not interchangeable with its specific recommendation to wipe blue or rainbow discoloration with white vinegar. If you are unsure what caused a mark, start with the pan maker’s care guide rather than assuming it is heat tint.
