Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo remove sweater pills safely, first read the care label and identify how delicate the knit is. Lay the sweater flat, support the fabric, and lift a few pills away by hand without pulling the yarn. If there are many pills, make short, almost weightless passes with a sweater comb, stopping immediately if the teeth catch or the knit changes. A battery-operated fabric shaver is another option mentioned by The Woolmark Company, but it is not established as suitable for every sweater. Cashmere and other delicate knits deserve the gentlest method and the least pressure.
What sweater pills are—and why removal can damage a knit
Pills are small balls or clusters of fibers that form on the fabric surface. Friction loosens fibers; the fibers break away, tangle and cling together. The American Cleaning Institute describes pilling as an abrasion-related wear problem, while Woolmark identifies rubbing during wear as the cause. High-rub areas commonly include elbows, armpits, sleeves, the belly and the sides of a sweater.

A pill sits on top of the fabric, but its fibers may still be connected to the underlying yarn. Pulling hard, scraping aggressively or cutting into the surface can remove sound fibers along with the pill, thin the fabric or create a snag. The goal is therefore controlled surface removal, not making every thread perfectly smooth.

Pilling is not proof that a sweater is defective. The American Cleaning Institute calls it “a wear problem which cannot be prevented completely” in some fabrics. The practical objective is to reduce loose surface fibers and abrasion while preserving the knit’s structure.

Before touching the garment, distinguish a pill from a snag. A pill is a fuzzy ball or cluster lying on the surface. A snag is a loop or strand pulled out from the knit. Do not tug a snag or cut a yarn loop as if it were a pill; stop if a tool catches one.
Choose the least aggressive method that fits the sweater
| Situation | Preferred approach | Why and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Only a few loose pills | Lift them off by hand | No tool is needed, and you can feel whether the underlying yarn is being pulled. Remove only the loose surface cluster. |
| Many pills on a stable wool or similar knit | Sweater or pill comb | Woolmark and the Cashmere and Camel Hair Manufacturers Institute (CCMI) specifically recognize combs. Use minimal pressure and controlled strokes; the sources do not establish a universal pressure or motion protocol. |
| Large area, if the garment and tool directions permit | Battery-operated fabric shaver or depiller | Woolmark lists a fabric shaver as an alternative. No comparative evidence here shows it is safer, faster or appropriate for every fiber, so treat it as conditional. |
| Cashmere or very delicate, loosely knit fabric | Hand removal first; a suitable comb only with exceptional care | CCMI recognizes pill combs for cashmere, but delicate yarns can be damaged by force. Stop at the first sign of catching, fuzzing or thinning. |
A comb is the clearest conservative tool choice because the reviewed wool and cashmere guidance discusses comb use directly. For a small number of pills, hand removal is the lowest-cost and most controllable option. A fabric shaver should be considered only after checking the garment and manufacturer instructions.
Compare the practical trade-offs
Hand removal costs nothing beyond time and gives the most precise feedback, so it is the sensible starting point for a few isolated pills or an especially fragile knit. A sweater comb adds a small purchase but can cover more surface than fingertips; its usefulness depends on whether you can keep pressure light and controlled. A battery-operated shaver is another purchase and may process a larger area, but Woolmark’s identification of it as an option is not a claim that it works safely on every sweater. No source establishes a winner for speed, safety or effectiveness. Choose by fiber, knit construction, the area affected and your ability to stop as soon as the surface changes.

Before you start: check the label and inspect the knit
Read the care label
Follow the garment’s own washing, drying and handling instructions. The American Cleaning Institute recommends using the care label as the authority because sweaters differ in fiber, construction and finish. A label may identify hand washing, dry cleaning, flat drying or other restrictions that affect how you should handle the garment after depilling.
If you cannot determine the fiber or the label is missing, use the gentlest approach: hand removal on a small area, followed by a cautious test with a comb only if needed. Do not assume that a method suitable for a sturdy wool sweater is suitable for a fine cashmere, alpaca, cotton, synthetic or blended knit.
Inspect for snags, weak spots and decorative details
Look for raised loops, open seams, embroidery, beading, buttons and loosely attached fibers. Mark or avoid those areas. A pill comb’s teeth and a shaver’s cutting head can catch protruding details even when the surrounding fabric is sound.
Prepare a stable work surface
Place the clean, dry sweater flat on a stable surface. Support the pilled section so it does not bunch while you work. This flat setup is a handling precaution rather than a source-prescribed test; its purpose is to keep the fabric from moving into the tool.
Plan a small test area
Start where a minor change would be less noticeable, such as an inside edge or another inconspicuous section, while still following the label and the tool maker’s directions. Work on only a small group of pills, then compare the treated area with the surrounding knit. If the texture, color, loft or stitch definition looks different, do not continue. A successful test does not guarantee that every part of the garment will respond identically, especially around seams and high-wear zones.

Method 1: remove a few pills by hand
Hand removal gives you the most immediate feedback and is appropriate when only a few pills are present.
- Lay the sweater flat and smooth the area without stretching it.
- Use your fingertips to isolate one loose pill at a time.
- Lift the pill away from the surface, taking care not to pull the yarn beneath it.
- Release it if resistance increases. Do not force a pill that feels anchored.
- Check the area from several angles. Stop when the remaining fuzz is part of the fabric rather than a distinct loose cluster.
Do not twist a pill repeatedly or yank it upward. A resistant cluster may include intact fibers, and removing those can leave a thin patch. If hand removal becomes slow because pills cover a broad area, switch to a comb rather than increasing force.
Collect the removed fibers as you go so they do not cling to another part of the sweater. Keep your fingers clean and dry, and avoid rubbing the surrounding fabric while searching for the next pill. The moment you feel a strand moving with the cluster, treat it as a possible snag rather than a pill.

Woolmark states: “A comb can be used to remove pills, but this should be done very gently and carefully.” CCMI likewise says that pill combs are sold for combing pills and fuzz from cashmere. Those statements support the tool category, not a guarantee that every comb suits every knit.
Controlled combing steps
- Confirm that the sweater is flat, dry and free of loose objects that could snag the teeth.
- Hold the fabric near the working area so it is supported but not stretched tight.
- Place the comb lightly against the surface, following the tool’s own instructions.
- Make a short, slow pass over a small group of pills. Use minimal pressure; the teeth should catch surface fuzz, not dig into the knit.
- Lift the comb, inspect the result and clear collected fibers as directed by the manufacturer.
- Continue in small sections only while the fabric looks unchanged and the comb glides without catching.
- Stop immediately if the teeth snag a loop, the knit looks thinner, new fuzz appears or the surface changes color or texture.
The short-pass and stop rules are practical safety precautions, not a laboratory-tested protocol. They limit the amount of fabric exposed to friction and make it easier to notice a problem before it spreads.
How much pressure is safe?
There is no universal safe pressure because yarn size, stitch density, fiber and comb design vary. Use the least force that lifts the pill. If you have to press down, repeat a pass many times or pull the comb through resistance, the tool is not behaving safely on that area. Reassess the fiber and switch back to hand removal or stop.
Work in sections, not long strokes
Divide a broad panel into small visual sections and finish or abandon one before moving to the next. Long strokes encourage you to maintain pressure after the comb meets a seam, change in stitch density or loose loop. Lift the comb at the end of every pass rather than dragging it sideways across an adjacent area. Brush collected fibers away from the garment without rubbing them back into the knit.
Method 3: consider a fabric shaver only conditionally
Woolmark names a battery-operated fabric shaver as another way to remove pills. The available guidance does not establish that a shaver is safer, faster or suitable for every sweater, and it does not provide a performance ranking against a comb.

If you choose this option, read the shaver’s instructions and the garment’s care information first. Keep the head flat as directed, use the lightest setting available and work on a small, inconspicuous section before treating a visible area. Do not use it over raised loops, seams, buttons or decorative work. Stop if the head catches, the fabric becomes fuzzy or thin, or the knit’s appearance changes.
Do not substitute an ordinary razor, scissors or a blade held directly against the fabric. Those tools are not the sweater-care options identified in the cited guidance and give you little control over how deeply they cut.
Empty or clean the shaver only as its manufacturer directs, and keep the cutting head from contacting loose threads. If the shaver requires you to press firmly to reach the pills, reconsider the method instead of increasing force. A shaver that removes visible fuzz while also flattening, thinning or changing the sheen of the knit has already gone too far.

Cashmere requires a conservative approach because the visible pill may be intertwined with fine surface fibers. CCMI’s garment-care guidance specifically recognizes pill combs, noting that high-quality garments are normally less prone to pilling, but its statement is not permission to use force.
- Start with hand removal, even if a comb is available.
- Test a comb on a hidden area only if hand removal is insufficient and the comb is appropriate for the garment.
- Use tiny, gentle passes and inspect after each one.
- Avoid stretching the knit to make a pill stand up; tension can distort the stitches.
- Stop rather than chase every last bit of fuzz. A slightly fuzzy surface is preferable to a thinned or snagged panel.
For a valuable, heirloom or visibly weakened garment, professional cleaning or repair may be more appropriate than experimenting with a tool. The sources here do not prescribe a specific professional service, so ask the cleaner or maker how they want the garment prepared.
The same restraint applies to loosely knit, brushed or blended sweaters whose surface fibers are intentionally soft. Fiber names alone do not establish that a particular tool is safe. Construction, stitch density, finish and the label’s instructions matter, so use the least aggressive method that gives you control.
What to do when something goes wrong
The comb catches a loop
Stop moving the comb. Ease it away in the direction it entered without pulling the loop. Do not cut the loop or tug it tighter. If the loop remains displaced, set the garment aside for a repair assessment.

The area looks thinner or fuzzy
Stop depilling that section. Additional passes can remove more sound fibers. Compare the treated area with an untouched section in the same light; if the texture has changed, do not continue with the same tool.

Pills remain after one pass
Do not compensate by pressing harder. Some surface fibers are part of the knit and should remain. Remove only clearly loose pills, then address the friction or washing conditions that caused recurrence.
The sweater stretches out of shape
Lay it flat and allow it to return to its labeled drying position. Do not pull the fabric taut while combing or shaving. Follow the care label for washing and drying rather than trying to reshape it with heat or force.
You cannot tell whether it is a pill
Pause and examine the strand from both sides of the fabric. A pill is a surface cluster; a loop that rises from the stitch pattern is a structural strand. When uncertain, leave it in place. Removing a little fuzz is optional, but cutting or pulling a sound yarn can create permanent damage.
Reduce new pilling after removal
Control abrasion during wear
Because rubbing creates pills, look for repeated contact at the elbows, underarms, sleeves, belly and sides. Backpack straps, rough outer layers, seat belts, desks and bag edges can increase friction. Where practical, reduce direct rubbing and avoid carrying abrasive surfaces against the same panel every day.
Rotate frequently worn sweaters when possible so one garment does not receive all of the same contact. Check the inside of coats, bags and furniture for rough edges that meet the sweater. These steps reduce abrasion; they cannot promise that pilling will stop.
Wash according to the label
The American Cleaning Institute recommends following the sweater’s care label. When instructions are unclear, it advises cold water as a cautious default; for hand-wash sweaters, handle gently without rubbing or wringing, and dry hand-wash-only sweaters flat. These are general tips, not a rule that every sweater should be washed identically.
Woolmark recommends turning wool garments inside out before washing, avoiding fabric softener and minimizing abrasion during wear. Apply those suggestions only where they fit the garment’s fiber and care instructions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo not use a more aggressive wash to remove remaining fuzz. Rubbing, wringing and unsuitable drying can create the same abrasion that caused the pills. Do not expect permanent prevention
Pills can recur even after careful removal. The American Cleaning Institute says pilling cannot be prevented completely in some fabrics. Treat depilling as maintenance: remove loose surface clusters when needed, then reduce the friction and rough handling that encourage new ones.
A practical decision checklist
- Label checked: You know whether the garment is hand-wash, machine-wash, dry-clean or otherwise restricted.
- Fiber considered: Cashmere and other delicate or loosely knit fabrics get the gentlest treatment.
- Surface identified: You are dealing with pills, not pulled loops or a structural snag.
- Garment supported: The sweater is flat and stable, without being stretched.
- Method matched to quantity: Hand removal for a few pills; a comb for more, used lightly; a shaver only conditionally.
- Stop signal understood: Catching, thinning, new fuzz or a changed texture means stop.
- Aftercare planned: Washing, drying and wear habits follow the label and minimize abrasion.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I remove a few sweater pills without buying a tool?
Yes. Lay the sweater flat and lift each loose pill away by hand without pulling the yarn underneath. Release it if you feel resistance; hand removal is the most controllable choice for a small number of pills.
Is a sweater comb safe for cashmere?
CCMI specifically recognizes pill combs for cashmere, but use remains conditional. Start by hand, test a suitable comb on an inconspicuous area, make tiny gentle passes and stop at the first catch, thinning or texture change.
Are electric fabric shavers safe for every sweater?
No universal suitability has been established. Woolmark lists a battery-operated shaver as an option, but check the garment and tool instructions, test a small area and stop if the knit changes or the head catches.
Can I use a razor or scissors instead?
Do not substitute an ordinary razor, scissors or a blade held directly against the fabric. Those tools are not the sweater-care options identified in the cited garment guidance and can give you little control over how deeply they cut.
What is the difference between a pill and a snag?
A pill is a fuzzy surface cluster. A snag is a loop or strand pulled out from the knit. Do not tug or cut a snag as if it were a pill; stop when a tool catches a loop.
Why do pills come back after I remove them?
Pilling is caused by abrasion during wear and washing, especially around elbows, armpits, sleeves, the belly and sweater sides. It cannot be prevented completely in some fabrics, so reduce rubbing and follow the care label after removal.
How should I wash a sweater after depilling?
Follow its care label. When instructions are unclear, the American Cleaning Institute advises cold water as a cautious default; handle hand-wash sweaters gently without rubbing or wringing, and dry hand-wash-only sweaters flat. Woolmark also suggests turning wool inside out, avoiding fabric softener and minimizing abrasion where those directions fit the garment.
When should I stop and seek professional help?
Stop if the knit looks thinner, becomes newly fuzzy, changes texture or color, or a loop remains displaced after catching. A valuable, heirloom or visibly weakened sweater may be better handled by a cleaner or repair professional than by further tool use.
The Bottom Line
Use the gentlest method that removes the actual pills: hand-lift a few, comb many with light controlled passes, and treat a fabric shaver as a conditional alternative. Keep the sweater flat, stop at the first catch or sign of thinning, and reduce abrasion and harsh handling to slow recurrence.
