The safest method is conditional, not one-size-fits-all: read the cardigan’s care label and fiber content, lay it flat, test a hidden area, then use the least aggressive tool that suits the knit. A sweater comb with slow, one-direction strokes is a sensible first choice for fine wool or cashmere. A fabric shaver can handle stubborn pills on a compatible, sturdier knit when used with almost no pressure, while small scissors are best for a few isolated pills. Never pull pills by hand, and stop immediately if yarn catches, stitches loosen or the fabric starts to look thin.
What pilling is and why cardigans develop it
A pill is a small fuzzy ball made when loose fiber ends on the fabric surface twist and mat together. Rubbing during wear is the main trigger. Repeated washing can also tangle fiber ends, so a cardigan may pill even when it is handled carefully. The raised areas usually appear where the garment or your arms repeatedly contact another surface: elbows, armpits, sleeves, the belly area and the sides of the torso.

Pilling is a surface problem; a pulled loop or a hole is a structural problem. A pill looks like a compact tuft sitting above the fabric. A pulled loop is yarn that has been drawn out of the stitch pattern, and a hole shows a break in that pattern. Do not cut a loop that is part of the knit. Removing it can turn a small snag into a run or permanent opening.

Check the cardigan before choosing a tool
Read the care label first
The label’s washing and handling instructions take priority over generic advice. Look for fiber content, washing temperature, drying instructions and any dry-clean-only wording. A blend can behave differently from either fiber on its own, and a label may identify a finish that makes a surface more vulnerable to abrasion. If the label says to use professional cleaning or gives a specific maintenance method, follow it instead of improvising with a shaver or stone.
Identify the surface and the problem
Turn the cardigan inside out only for inspection, then return it to its normal side for removal. Under bright, even light, look at the affected area without stretching the garment out of shape. Confirm that the raised material is a pill and not a loose stitch, seam thread, thinning patch or hole. If you cannot tell, do not cut; a knitwear repair professional can distinguish a surface pill from structural damage.
Prepare a controlled work area
- Work on a clean, stable, flat surface with enough light to see individual stitches.
- Place the cardigan flat and smooth it with your hands. Support it without pulling it so tightly that the stitch pattern widens or distorts.
- Have a lint brush or your hands ready to lift loose fuzz after each small area.
- Use a clean, undamaged tool. A bent comb tooth, rough stone edge or nicked scissor tip can snag yarn.
- Choose a hidden test area, such as an inside hem or underarm edge, that uses the same fabric as the visible surface.
Which pill-removal tool should you use?
Choose by surface delicacy and the amount of pilling, not by speed alone. Manual tools provide more control; powered or abrasive tools remove material faster but leave less margin for error.

|---|---|---|---|
| Sweater or cashmere comb | Fine, soft wool or cashmere with light to moderate surface pills | Use slow strokes in one direction, with only enough tension to smooth the test area | A forceful pass can catch a loose stitch; it must be used very gently and carefully |
| Electric fabric shaver | A knit whose label or manufacturer guidance indicates that shaving is suitable, especially when pills are widespread or stubborn | Keep the device light, use its guard as designed and make a gentle one-direction pass | Pressure can remove sound fabric as well as pills; test an inconspicuous patch first |
| Small scissors | One or a few distinct pills that can be reached without touching the yarn structure | Hold the pill away from the surface and snip only the protruding fiber | Slow and easy to misdirect; a tip that enters a stitch can cut the cardigan |
| Sweater stone | Stubborn pills on a surface that the label and fabric construction can tolerate | Use light pressure in one direction; lift the stone before changing direction | Abrasive action can affect delicate knits and may create snags if dragged or pressed |
A comb is a reasonable first tool for fine, soft fibers because your hand controls every stroke. A shaver is more efficient only when the knit is suitable and you can keep pressure low. Scissors make sense for isolated pills, not a whole front covered in fuzz. A stone is an optional, higher-abrasion choice rather than a default. None should be treated as universally safe.

Step-by-step: remove pills while protecting the stitches
- Lay the cardigan flat. Close buttons or a zipper if doing so keeps the panels aligned, but do not stretch the fabric taut. Work on one small section at a time so you can inspect the result before continuing.
- Map the affected area. Separate true pills from loose threads, pulled loops and holes. Mark the most heavily affected zones mentally and start in a less visible patch. Starting small lets you stop before a mistake spreads across the garment.
- Test your selected tool. On the hidden area, make a few light strokes or trim one pill, then examine the stitches from several angles. Check for fuzz that has been flattened, a bald-looking patch, snagged yarn or a change in color or texture. If any appears, stop and choose a gentler approach or seek professional care.
- Use the least aggressive method that works. For fine wool or cashmere, begin with the comb. For a suitable sturdier knit, a guarded shaver may be appropriate. Reserve scissors for individual pills and a stone for stubborn pills only when the surface can tolerate abrasion.
- Keep every pass controlled. Move in one direction with a light touch. Do not saw back and forth, bear down to reach a pill, or repeatedly revisit a spot that already looks smooth. Excess removal can thin a knit even when no immediate hole appears.
- Pause after each small section. Lift away the loose fuzz and view the fabric flat. Compare the treated area with an untouched section. If the surface begins to look lower, shinier, rougher or less dense, stop rather than trying to make the entire garment perfectly uniform.
- Inspect the finished area. Look for exposed loops, broken yarn, a new hole or a section that has been shaved too close. Check both the face and the reverse of the knit where practical.
- Clear the remaining lint gently. Pick up loose fibers with your fingers or a soft lint brush. Do not pull attached fibers in an attempt to make the surface completely bare.
How to use each tool safely
Sweater or cashmere comb
A comb offers the most direct feedback for a delicate, soft surface. Smooth the target area on the flat cardigan, using only enough tension to remove wrinkles; excessive stretching can distort the stitches. Place the comb at the edge of the pill cluster and draw it slowly in one direction. Lift or reset the comb rather than dragging it back across the same path. Use short passes and check the fabric after each one.
Wool-care guidance describes a comb as acceptable for pills only when used very gently and carefully. If a tooth catches, stop and release it without pulling. A catch can indicate a loose stitch, a damaged tooth or a direction that does not suit the knit. Do not increase force to finish a stubborn pill; switch to carefully positioned scissors or obtain professional advice.
Electric fabric shaver
Use a shaver only after confirming that the knit is suitable. Product labeling and the garment’s own care information matter because guards, blade height and motor speed vary. Place the cardigan flat, turn the shaver on before it touches the fabric if the device instructions require that sequence, and make a light, one-direction pass over a small test area. Keep the device moving rather than dwelling over one spot.
Pressure is the critical hazard. Pressing down can shave away sound fibers along with the pills, leaving a thin or visibly altered patch. Do not use a shaver on a surface that already has exposed loops, open holes or obvious weakness. Empty lint from the device as directed so buildup does not change how it contacts the fabric, and recheck the test area before treating a larger panel.

Small scissors
Scissors are useful when only a few pills stand above an otherwise clean surface. Hold the pill itself, not the surrounding knit, and keep the blades parallel to the fabric. Snip the protruding fibers at their base without inserting the tip into the stitch. Work slowly enough to see exactly what is between the blades.
Do not pull a pill upward to make it easier to cut. Pulling can draw a sound loop out of the fabric and leave a snag. If a pill is attached to a thread that disappears into the stitch pattern, treat it as a possible structural loop and leave it for a repair professional.
Sweater stone
A sweater stone can abrade stubborn pills, but it has less precision than a comb. Use it only when the care label and the fabric surface make abrasion appropriate. With the cardigan flat, make a light pass in one direction. Lift the stone completely before changing direction; turning it while in contact with the knit increases the chance of a snag. Stop often to remove loosened fuzz and inspect the surface. If the knit is fine, soft, loosely constructed or already thin, choose a comb instead.

- The tool catches, drags or will not release smoothly.
- A stitch rises with the pill, or a loop becomes visibly longer than neighboring loops.
- The treated area looks thinner, flatter, shinier or more transparent than the surrounding fabric.
- A hole, split seam or broken yarn appears.
- The tool removes colored fiber or creates a bald patch instead of only lifting pills.
- You need increasing pressure or repeated passes to remove the remaining fuzz.
These signs mean the problem is no longer simple surface pilling. Put the tool down, leave the area intact and arrange knitwear repair if the damage affects wear or appearance.

Reduce friction during washing
Turn knitwear inside out before washing when the care instructions allow it. A fine-mesh laundry bag can reduce rubbing between the cardigan and other items, but it does not override a label that requires a different method. Use the specified cycle, temperature and drying process for the garment’s fiber and construction.
Reduce friction while wearing it
Bags, belts and other accessories can rub repeatedly against the same torso or side panel. Adjust contact points when possible and avoid carrying a rough strap over a vulnerable area for long periods. The goal is to reduce repeated abrasion, not to prevent every instance of contact that occurs during normal wear.
Be restrained with softener
Wool-care guidance cautions against excessive fabric softener. Follow the label and product directions rather than adding more in the hope of preventing pills. Too much product can change the hand of the fabric without addressing the friction that creates pills.

Store the cardigan without stretching it
After cleaning, let the garment dry and rest according to its label before folding or storing it. Keep it supported in a way that does not pull on individual loops. Avoid treating pilling as a reason to repeatedly wash the cardigan; every additional wash can add friction and entanglement.
Troubleshooting common situations
The comb keeps catching
Stop instead of increasing force. Recheck whether the raised material is a pulled loop, whether the comb has a damaged tooth, and whether the fabric is too loose or delicate for that tool. If the area is a genuine pill and the tool is sound, try a shorter, lighter stroke in the opposite direction only after another hidden test. If it still catches, leave the pill in place and seek repair advice.
The shaver leaves a thin-looking patch
Turn the shaver off and compare the treated patch with an untouched section. Do not try to blend the patch by shaving neighboring fabric; that can enlarge the damage. Remove loose lint gently and stop using the device on that cardigan. A repair professional can assess whether the area needs reinforcement.

Pills return quickly
Rapid recurrence usually means the same surface is experiencing continuing friction or that the washing routine is creating extra rubbing. Check contact from bags and belts, turn the garment inside out for washing when permitted, use a mesh bag if compatible with the label, and avoid unnecessary repeat washing. Remove only the new surface pills with the gentlest suitable method.
You cannot identify the fiber or care method
Do not guess based on appearance. The label, original retailer information or a qualified cleaner can identify the fiber and appropriate care. Until you have that information, avoid abrasive stones and powered shavers; leaving a pill temporarily is safer than testing an aggressive tool on an unknown knit.
A pill sits beside a seam, buttonhole or ribbed edge
Those areas contain denser or differently shaped stitches and are easier to catch. Use small scissors only if you can clearly isolate the pill from the seam yarn. Otherwise, use a very gentle comb at a distance from the edge or leave the pill for professional handling.
A practical decision checklist
- Fine, soft wool or cashmere: begin with a sweater or cashmere comb, using slow, gentle, one-direction strokes.
- Compatible sturdier knit with widespread pills: a guarded fabric shaver may save time, provided a hidden test succeeds and you apply almost no pressure.
- Only a few isolated pills: small scissors provide precise control when the yarn is clearly out of reach.
- Stubborn pills on an abrasion-tolerant surface: consider a sweater stone with light, one-direction passes and lifting between directions.
- Any catch, thinning, loose loop or hole: stop and treat it as possible knit damage, not as a pill-removal challenge.
Removing pills is successful when the raised fuzz is reduced without changing the stitch structure. A slightly imperfect surface is preferable to a smooth-looking cardigan that has been thinned, snagged or cut.
