How to Remove Personal Information From a Photo’s Metadata on iPhone and Android

The safest built-in approach is to treat location separately from other metadata. On iPhone, you can remove a saved photo’s location, stop the Camera app from collecting location in the future, or exclude location when sharing. On Android, turn off the location or geotag option in the Camera app; the label varies by manufacturer. Google Photos can remove locations it estimated or that you added manually, but it cannot remove a location automatically embedded by the camera.

These controls are location controls, not a guarantee that every EXIF or personal field disappears. Timestamps, device or camera identifiers, and other information may remain. If you need privacy, check both the file you are sending and the scene visible in the image.

What “photo metadata” includes—and what the phone controls actually remove

A digital photo can carry information in addition to the visible picture. Location data is the most important privacy concern covered by the built-in iPhone and Android controls. A camera may save where the image was taken, while a photo service may separately estimate a place or let a person add one manually.

Other fields can also exist, including the capture time and device or camera identifiers. The procedures below do not establish that those fields are removed. Turning off location tagging, removing a location, or excluding location from a share should therefore be described accurately: it protects location information, rather than promising a completely metadata-free file.

iPhone: remove or exclude location information

Apple provides three different controls. Use the first when a location is already attached to a photo, the second to prevent future camera collection, and the third when you only want to omit location from a particular share.

Remove the location from a saved photo

  1. Open the Photos app.
  2. Select the photo whose location you want to change.
  3. Open More or Adjust Info, depending on the interface shown on your iPhone.
  4. Choose Adjust Location.
  5. Select No Location.

The result is a photo in your library with its saved location removed through Apple’s location-editing control. If you have several images, process each selected item as supported by the Photos interface and then check the information panel on the result. Do not assume that this operation also deletes capture time, device identifiers, or unrelated metadata.

Stop the Camera app from collecting location in future photos

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Privacy & Security and then Location Services.
  3. Tap Camera.
  4. Set access to Never.

This prevents the Camera app from collecting location through the permission controlled by iOS. It is a forward-looking setting: photos already taken can retain the location that was saved when they were captured, so handle those existing images separately.

Exclude location when sharing a photo

  1. In Photos, select one or more pictures.
  2. Tap Share.
  3. Tap Options in the share sheet.
  4. Turn off Location.
  5. Continue with the intended sharing destination.

This is a share-time choice. It is useful when you want to keep the original library item unchanged while preventing the location from being included in that particular share. If you send the same original through another route later, make the choice again and verify the file produced by that route.

Which iPhone method should you use?

  • For an existing library item: use Adjust Location > No Location.
  • For every new camera photo: set Camera location access to Never.
  • For a one-time send: turn off Location under Share > Options.

These choices can be combined. For example, you can stop future collection, remove locations from older pictures that matter, and still check the share sheet whenever the destination or privacy requirements change.

Android: turn off location tags in the Camera app

Android does not have one universal Camera menu. Manufacturers use different names for the same general feature, and the exact path depends on the phone’s software. Open the device’s Camera app, enter its settings, and look for a location, geotag, or save-location option.

Names you may see

Device or manufacturer example Location setting name documented by Google
Google devices Save location
Samsung Location tags
Motorola Save location
Xiaomi Save location info
Other camera interfaces Geo-tag photos, Tag locations, or Store location data
  1. Open the phone’s Camera app.
  2. Open Camera settings. This may be a gear icon, a menu button, or a settings panel inside the viewfinder.
  3. Find the setting whose wording refers to location, geotagging, or saving location.
  4. Switch that setting off.
  5. Take a test photo and inspect its information in the phone’s photo app before sharing important images.

Because menu names and placements change between manufacturers and software versions, do not expect a single Android path to work on every handset. If you cannot find the switch, search the Camera settings—not the general Gallery settings—for terms such as “location,” “tag,” “geo,” or “save location.”

Samsung-specific caution

Samsung support warns that location data may be stored in a photo and should be considered before sharing from Gallery. The available controls and sequence can vary by model and software version, so use the location-tags option shown on your own device rather than relying on a universal Samsung sequence.

Existing Android photos: what Google Photos can and cannot change

Google Photos distinguishes between a location it estimated or a person entered manually and a location automatically embedded by the camera.

Estimated or manually added locations

When Google Photos offers Remove location for an estimated location or one that someone entered, that control can remove that location information from the Google Photos item. Use the photo’s information or location controls, choose the available remove option, and confirm the change if prompted.

Camera-embedded locations

Google Photos cannot edit or remove a location that the camera automatically embedded in the file. If the location came directly from the device at capture time, the Google Photos remove control does not turn that camera-written location into a clean file. In that case, the practical prevention step is to disable the Camera app’s location or geotag setting before taking future pictures, and to treat existing files as potentially location-bearing when you export or send them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This distinction explains why two photos can show different behavior in Google Photos: one may have an estimated or manually entered place that can be removed, while another contains camera-written coordinates that the service cannot edit.

Does Google Photos remove GPS data when you share?

Not automatically in every sharing scenario. Google says location sharing can be controlled for shared albums, links, and conversations, while partner sharing can include location details. The setting and result depend on the type of share you create.

Shared albums, links, and conversations

Review the location-sharing control for the specific shared album, link, or conversation before sending it. A setting used for one sharing type should not be assumed to govern another. If location is sensitive, open the sharing options for that destination and confirm whether location details are included.

Partner sharing

Partner sharing can include location details. If the recipient does not need that information, review the partner-sharing location option before relying on the feature for a private transfer.

Downloaded files sent outside Google Photos

A photo downloaded from Google Photos and then sent through another service may show the original location saved by the device, regardless of changes made in Photos. This is especially important when a camera embedded the location in the original file. Treat the exported file as a separate object: check the exact file you plan to send, not only the copy displayed in your library.

How to verify a photo before you send it

Verification is the step that catches differences between your library copy, a shared view, and a downloaded file.

  1. Identify the source. Was the location written by the camera, estimated by Google Photos, or added manually? Camera-written locations have the strictest Google Photos limitation.
  2. Apply the appropriate control. On iPhone, remove the saved location, disable future Camera access, or turn off Location in the share Options. On Android, disable the Camera app’s location or geotag setting. In Google Photos, use Remove location only when the location is estimated or manually added.
  3. Create the actual share or export. Do not verify only the library original if you are going to download it, attach it to another app, or publish it through a link.
  4. Inspect the resulting file or destination. Check the information panel available in the receiving photo service, or ask a trusted recipient to confirm whether a map location appears. For a high-sensitivity image, send a test copy to an account you control first.
  5. Check the picture itself. Metadata controls cannot hide a street sign, house number, distinctive building, reflection, or recognizable view.

If the test copy still reveals a location, stop and identify whether it came from the camera file, the sharing route, or the visible scene before sending the original.

Location metadata is not the only way a photo can identify you

Removing or excluding a location does not make an image anonymous. Google warns that people may infer where a photo was taken from landmarks visible in it. Before posting, inspect the entire frame for:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Street signs, transit signs, business names, and house numbers
  • Distinctive buildings, monuments, schools, or workplaces
  • Landscape features, coastlines, mountain profiles, and other recognizable views
  • Reflections in mirrors, windows, vehicles, glasses, or polished surfaces
  • Mail, delivery labels, badges, screens, or documents that reveal an address

Crop or edit visible clues only when doing so does not create a new privacy problem, and remember that a cropped image may still retain the original file’s metadata unless you apply the relevant location control or share option.

Common problems and the right fix

“I turned off location, but an old photo still shows a place.”

Disabling the Camera setting affects future captures. It does not rewrite files already taken. On iPhone, edit the existing photo with Adjust Location > No Location. On Android, determine whether the file contains a camera-embedded location; Google Photos cannot remove that type automatically embedded by the camera.

“Google Photos shows Remove location, but another image has no such option.”

The available removal control applies to an estimated or manually added location. A camera-embedded location is a different source and cannot be edited or removed by Google Photos. Disable camera geotagging for future photos and handle the existing file as location-bearing when exporting.

“The library view looks private, but the downloaded attachment exposes a place.”

Google notes that a downloaded photo sent outside Google Photos may show the original device-saved location. Test the exact downloaded attachment and sharing route rather than relying on the library display.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I cannot find the Android setting described online.”

Look in the Camera app’s own settings and try the manufacturer’s wording: Save location, Location tags, Save location info, Geo-tag photos, Tag locations, or Store location data. The control may move or be renamed after a software update, and not every device exposes the same menu.

“I removed location, but someone still guessed where I was.”

Inspect the visible content. Signs, house numbers, recognizable buildings, reflections, and distinctive views can disclose a place without any metadata. Remove or obscure those clues before posting.

A practical privacy workflow

  1. Decide whether you need location protection for one image or all future images. Use a share-time control for a one-off send; change the Camera permission or setting for future captures.
  2. On iPhone, choose the matching Photos action. Use No Location for a saved item, Never for future Camera collection, or Share > Options with Location off for one share.
  3. On Android, disable the camera’s location feature. Use the label shown by your manufacturer rather than assuming the setting name from another phone.
  4. For Google Photos, determine the location source. Remove estimated or manually added locations when offered; do not expect the service to remove camera-embedded coordinates.
  5. Review the sharing route. Albums, links, conversations, partner sharing, and externally downloaded files can handle location differently.
  6. Verify the exact output. Check the file or destination that the recipient will receive.
  7. Inspect the scene. Remove visual clues that identify the place independently of metadata.

What these built-in controls do not establish

The documented Apple and Google procedures establish practical controls for location information. They do not establish a universal, full-metadata removal function for every photo field on iPhone or Android. If your requirement is “remove all personal metadata,” do not treat a disabled location tag or a share-time Location switch as proof that timestamps, device identifiers, or every other EXIF field has been stripped. State the requirement precisely, verify the exported file, and avoid sharing the original when the destination does not need it.
