For Ray-Ban Meta glasses, the safe order is: import anything you want to keep, verify every copy, manage phone and cloud copies separately, then perform a factory reset before selling, gifting or recycling the glasses. A factory reset permanently erases captures still stored on the glasses and removes their Meta-account association. A force restart is only a connection fix; it does not delete photos or recordings.
During normal use, captures remain on the glasses until you move them with the Meta AI app. Importing does not act as a universal delete command: it creates a copy in your phone’s gallery, and that copy may also be backed up to a photo service or shared elsewhere. The sections below show how to identify each copy, preserve the files you need, erase the glasses, and keep the recording indicator working for people around you.

What happens to a photo or video after you capture it?
Ray-Ban Meta’s storage process has several separate stages. Meta’s 2026 AI glasses FAQ states: “Photos and videos you capture with your AI glasses for your gallery are stored privately on your glasses.” Meta’s responsible-innovation guidance likewise says: “Everything you capture on your glasses stays on your glasses until you choose to move them onto your phone using the Meta AI app.”

Because cloud and sharing behavior depends on the phone, account and app involved, there is no single cross-brand delete command established for all destinations. Treat every destination as its own copy.
Before you erase anything: make a deliberate backup
Pair the glasses and import selected captures
- Charge the glasses and keep the phone nearby. Open the Meta AI app and pair the glasses if they are not already connected.
- Open the glasses’ gallery in the app and use the download or import control for the photos and videos you want to retain. On iOS, accept the temporary glasses Wi-Fi connection if the app prompts you; the transfer can require that direct connection.
- Wait for each selected item to finish importing. A thumbnail appearing in the app is not, by itself, proof that the file is fully saved in the phone’s gallery.
- Open the phone’s Photos or Gallery app and play several imported videos, including any files that matter for work or evidence. Check that the image opens at full resolution and that the video has sound and the expected duration.
Import only what you intend to keep if you are preparing a privacy-sensitive handoff. The glasses retain captures until the reset stage, so you can repeat the import while they are still paired.
Back up to a second destination when the files matter
A phone gallery is a convenient working copy, not necessarily a second backup. Copy important files to a computer or your chosen storage service, then open a sample from that second destination. Keep the original date and time metadata when your workflow allows it, and avoid editing or re-exporting the only copy before you have verified playback.
Check whether automatic photo backup created another copy
Look in the backup service used by your phone. If the imported files appear there, they are separate from both the glasses and the local gallery. Decide whether that cloud copy is part of your retention plan. If you later want the files gone, delete them in the cloud service as well as in the phone gallery, and use that service’s trash or recently deleted control according to its own retention rules.
How to remove photos and recordings from Ray-Ban Meta glasses
Use factory reset for a complete on-glasses erase
After verifying backups, start the factory-reset procedure for the glasses from the device controls presented by the Meta AI app or the official Ray-Ban Meta instructions. Labels can change with app versions and regions, so read the confirmation screen carefully and choose the option explicitly described as a factory reset, not a restart or reconnect operation.
Ray-Ban’s FAQ states: “When Ray-Ban Meta glasses go through a factory reset, it permanently erases all captures and any associations between the glasses and your Meta Account.” In practical terms, the reset is destructive for every photo and video still on the glasses, including files you did not import. It also removes the account relationship so a recipient must pair the glasses with their own account.

- Confirm that the glasses are charged and connected to the phone or follow the reset method specified for an offline reset.
- Review the list of captures you intend to keep. Import anything missing before continuing.
- Start factory reset and read the warning that the action erases captures and account associations.
- Confirm the reset and leave the glasses powered until the process finishes. Interrupting a reset can leave the device in an incomplete setup state.
- Afterward, do not pair the glasses again with your account. For a sale, gift or recycling handoff, leave them at the initial setup screen so the next owner can complete pairing.
Do not substitute a force restart
A force restart can help when the app cannot connect, a transfer is stuck or the glasses are unresponsive. It is not a privacy wipe. The official FAQ specifically says that a force restart does not delete on-glasses media. If your goal is removal, use factory reset only after the backup check.

The reset affects captures and the Meta-account association on the glasses. It cannot erase files already imported to your phone, uploaded to a cloud photo service, sent in messages, posted online or copied by another person. Handle those destinations independently.
How to delete imported copies from your phone and services
Phone gallery
Open the phone’s Photos or Gallery app, select the imported items and choose delete. Then inspect the app’s recently deleted or trash area. Many phone galleries keep deleted media there for a period of time; permanent removal requires the additional empty-trash action provided by that app. If the phone is managed by an employer or school, its retention policy may prevent immediate permanent deletion.
Cloud photo backup
Open the cloud photo service where the files were backed up and delete the corresponding items there. Check both the main library and its trash or recently deleted area. If you want to keep a local copy while removing the cloud copy, verify that the phone is not configured to re-upload the same files automatically.
Messages, social posts and shared storage
Search the conversations, albums, shared drives and social accounts where you exported the files. Remove each copy using that service’s controls. Deleting a message or post may not remove a recipient’s downloaded copy, a screen recording or a re-share, so do not treat an app-level deletion as a guarantee that nobody else retains the media.

Capture and gallery behavior
Use the capture-related settings to understand when files are transferred and which app actions can share them. Keep automatic sharing off when you do not want a capture to leave the phone through a connected workflow. The exact menu wording can vary by app version and region, so verify each setting’s current description rather than relying on an older screenshot.
Voice recordings and voice features
Meta says voice recordings can be deleted. Review the voice or activity section in the app, identify recordings you no longer need and use its delete control. A voice command that triggers an action is not necessarily the same thing as a saved recording; check the activity list or privacy screen to see what the app has retained.
Notifications and information sharing
Notifications can expose capture or assistant activity on a lock screen or connected device. Adjust notification preferences for the privacy level you need. Also review information-sharing controls governing diagnostics, product improvement or cloud processing. Cloud-media menu names and retention behavior can vary by app version and region, so read the current descriptions and retention notices shown in your account.

The front capture LED is a required signal
The front LED is intended to tell people nearby that a photo or video is being captured. Meta’s FAQ says: “The capture LED has no off switch.” You cannot legitimately disable it through an app setting. Keep the LED visible and unobstructed whenever you use the camera.
Never cover, drill or modify the indicator
Meta states: “We have features in place that will prohibit you from taking a photo or video if the light is covered.” Covering the LED can therefore block capture, and detected tampering can disable the camera. Do not recommend tape, paint, drilling, firmware changes or other modifications intended to defeat the indicator. Such changes undermine the safety signal and can leave the camera unavailable.
When you need no recording at all
Do not press the capture button or issue a capture command. If a situation requires certainty that the camera cannot activate, power the glasses off or remove them and store them safely. Keep the LED unobstructed when the glasses are powered and in use, and tell people nearby what the camera can do when consent or workplace policy requires that conversation.

A safe handoff checklist for selling, gifting or recycling
- Import every photo and video you want to retain.
- Play a sample of imported videos and open important photos from the phone gallery.
- Confirm any second backup, such as a computer or cloud library, contains the files.
- Search for copies in recently deleted folders, shared albums, messages and social accounts.
- Delete copies from each destination where you no longer want them, including cloud trash when appropriate.
- Review and delete saved voice recordings and adjust notification or information-sharing preferences.
- Run the factory-reset procedure and confirm the warning about permanent capture deletion and account disassociation.
- After reset, do not sign back in or re-pair the glasses with your account.
- Provide the recipient with the normal pairing and charging accessories, but do not provide your account credentials.
For recycling, perform the same reset even if you do not expect another person to use the glasses. The reset removes the account association and erases captures remaining on the device before it leaves your control.

Troubleshooting common deletion problems
The app cannot see the glasses
Keep the glasses charged, turn Bluetooth on, open the Meta AI app and bring the phone close to the glasses. If iOS displays a request to join the glasses’ temporary Wi-Fi network during import, accept it and return to the app. A force restart can be used to restore a connection, but repeat the import check afterward because restarting does not erase media.
An import stops halfway
Do not factory-reset while a needed file is only partially transferred. Reconnect the glasses, accept the temporary Wi-Fi prompt if shown, and import the remaining items in smaller groups. Verify the files in the phone gallery before you erase the glasses. If a video plays only partially, treat it as unbacked-up and try the transfer again.
You reset before importing
A factory reset permanently erases captures left on the glasses. If the reset has completed, those on-glasses files cannot be recovered through the glasses or the Meta AI app. Check the phone gallery, cloud library and any location to which you previously shared the files; a copy may exist there, but do not assume one does.
You deleted the phone copy but it returned
Look for a cloud backup or another synchronized device restoring the file. Delete the cloud copy and empty its trash according to that service’s controls, then remove the local copy again. If the file was shared, inspect the recipient or shared-folder copy separately.
How to assess another smart-glasses model
The documented behavior above is specific to Ray-Ban Meta glasses and Meta’s app. Other smart glasses may store media locally, stream directly to a phone, upload to a vendor account or combine those methods. Do not infer another model’s behavior from Ray-Ban Meta’s documentation. Require a model-specific answer for local storage, deletion, reset scope, indicator behavior and cloud retention before making a privacy decision.
Questions people ask
Do photos stay on Ray-Ban Meta glasses after importing?
Yes. Captures remain on the glasses until you move them to the phone with the Meta AI app and then perform a factory reset to erase what remains. Importing creates a phone copy; it is not the destructive erase step.
Will a factory reset delete recordings?
It permanently erases all captures left on the glasses and removes the Meta-account association. It does not delete copies already stored on a phone, cloud service or sharing destination.
Can I turn off the recording light?
No. Meta says the capture LED has no off switch. Keep it visible; covering or tampering with it can prevent capture or disable the camera.
Does a force restart wipe the gallery?
No. A force restart may restore connectivity or responsiveness, but the official FAQ says it does not delete on-glasses media.
