For a chip you want gone, select the chip as the character it occupies and use the editor’s normal deletion or typing behavior, then verify the result in your current Docs interface. Google’s accessibility instructions document selecting a chip with Shift+Right Arrow; they do not promise that typing over the selection converts it to ordinary text.
What you can and cannot do
A smart chip is an interactive element embedded in a Google Docs document. Depending on the option you insert, it can represent a person, file, date, Calendar event, place, or another supported chip type. It appears in the document as a compact item rather than as ordinary words, and selecting it can open a pop-up with actions or details.

The important distinction is between editing the information inside a chip and removing the chip element itself:
- Date chip: Google documents changing the date value and changing its display format.
- People, file, event, place, and other chips: Google’s cited computer and Android help pages explain insertion and some chip-specific actions, but do not give a universal remove-or-convert procedure.
- Plain text replacement: Selecting the chip and typing is normal editor behavior that may replace the selected character, but Google’s help does not describe it as an official chip-conversion workflow. Confirm what happened before continuing.
This means there is no evidence-based “one keystroke that officially removes every smart chip.” The safest approach is to identify the chip and your platform, select only the chip, make the smallest change needed, and use Undo immediately if the result is not what you intended.

Identify the chip and the result you want
Before changing anything, click or navigate to the item and note what it represents. Your goal determines the correct operation.

Remove a smart chip on a computer
The following method uses Google’s documented way to select a chip as a character, while treating the subsequent deletion as ordinary Docs editing rather than as a special, officially documented chip command.
1. Put the cursor immediately before the chip
Click in the paragraph and use the arrow keys to place the insertion point at the beginning of the chip. Avoid dragging across neighboring words: a smart chip occupies a character-like position, and selecting extra text can erase that text as well.

2. Select the chip character
Google’s screen-reader guidance says to move to the beginning of a chip and press Shift+Right Arrow to select the character representing it. This is the clearest published selection instruction. If the highlight includes surrounding text, press an arrow key to clear the selection and try again from the chip’s first position.

3. Delete the selected character
With only the chip highlighted, press Backspace or Delete, whichever direction matches your cursor position. This is the normal behavior of a text editor acting on a selected character; Google’s help pages do not label either key as a universal smart-chip removal command.
Look at the paragraph immediately after the key press. The chip should no longer be visible, and adjacent words should remain intact. If a word, line break, or neighboring chip disappears, press Ctrl+Z on Windows or ChromeOS, or Command+Z on macOS, and repeat the selection more narrowly.
4. Check for chip-specific pop-up actions
When a chip is focused, Docs may open a pop-up with actions appropriate to that chip. Those actions vary by type. A pop-up is not proof that a universal Remove or Convert command exists; use only the controls actually shown for the selected chip.
Replace a smart chip with plain text
To turn a chip into words such as a person’s name, a date written out in a sentence, or a file label, first select the chip character using the procedure above. Then type the replacement text. Because Google’s help does not expressly document typing over a selected chip as a conversion feature, treat this as ordinary editor behavior and verify the result.

- Place the cursor at the chip’s beginning.
- Press Shift+Right Arrow to highlight the chip character.
- Type the exact text you want, without pressing Enter first.
- Pause and inspect the result. Confirm that the chip styling and pop-up behavior are gone and that the words are ordinary document text.
- If the chip remains, undo the attempt and use the delete-then-type sequence: delete the selected chip, then type the replacement in the same position.
Do not assume the visible label is a complete copy of the underlying item. A file chip, for example, may show a shortened title, while a people chip is an interactive reference. If the exact label matters, copy or note the text you want before deleting the chip.
Replace one chip with a different chip
Google documents inserting smart chips on a computer by typing @ and narrowing the suggestions, or by choosing Insert > Smart chips. To replace an existing chip with another type, remove the old chip first, then insert the new one at that location.
- Select the old chip as a character with Shift+Right Arrow.
- Press Backspace or Delete and confirm that only the old chip disappeared.
- Type
@, or open Insert > Smart chips. - Narrow the suggestions to the person, file, date, event, place, or other available item you need.
- Select the suggestion and verify that the new chip appears in the intended paragraph.
This is a delete-and-insert sequence, not an automatic conversion. If suggestions do not appear, check that you are editing the document rather than viewing it and that your account has the access needed to insert the selected item.
Edit a date chip without removing it
Date chips have documented controls that are separate from removal. On a computer, click the date text field in the chip’s interface to edit the date. Use the chip’s Settings option to change how the date is displayed. Screen-reader instructions describe opening the date pop-up, choosing a value in the date picker, and using the date-format menu.

Change the date value
- Activate the date chip to open its controls.
- Click the date text field, or use the date picker described by the accessibility interface.
- Enter or choose the correct date.
- Confirm the new value and check the document text.
Change the date format
- Open the date chip’s controls.
- Choose Settings or the date-format menu.
- Select the format that fits your document.
- Close the pop-up and confirm that the same date is displayed in the new format.
Changing a date or its format does not convert the chip to plain text. If you need static words instead, use the separate select-and-type approach and verify that the interactive chip has actually been replaced.
Android: edit or remove carefully
Google’s Android instructions cover inserting smart chips in the Docs app and editing a date by tapping the chip and choosing its edit control. They do not provide a general remove-or-replace procedure for every chip type. Do not assume that the computer keyboard sequence works the same way on an Android phone or tablet.
Edit an Android date chip
- Open the document in the Google Docs app.
- Tap the date chip.
- Choose the edit control shown for the date.
- Change the date, then confirm the result in the document.
Attempting a replacement on Android
For a non-date chip, first tap to place the cursor and use the mobile selection handles or text-selection controls to select only the chip. If the app offers a delete action, use it and inspect the surrounding text. If you type replacement words over a selection, treat the result as ordinary editing rather than a documented chip conversion. If precise selection is difficult on a small screen, undo immediately after an accidental deletion and retry with the document zoomed or opened on a computer.

Chip-type differences that affect removal
People chips
A people chip identifies a person in the document, but inserting it does not automatically give that person access to the document. Sharing remains a separate document permission. Removing the chip therefore removes the in-document reference; it does not revoke access that was granted elsewhere, and deleting the chip does not share the file with anyone.
File chips
A file chip is an in-document link-like element. Deleting it removes that element from the paragraph, not the underlying file. Before removal, record any title or context that readers still need.
Calendar-event and place chips
These chips can expose type-specific pop-up actions. Their available controls may differ from a date chip’s date and format controls. If the pop-up does not offer an edit or remove option, return to character selection and use the cautious delete-and-verify method.
Mixed selections
If a line contains several chips, select and change one at a time. A broad drag selection can include spaces, punctuation, or neighboring chips, making it harder to tell which item caused an unexpected result.
Troubleshooting unexpected results
- The chip opens a pop-up instead of highlighting: close the pop-up, move the insertion point to the chip’s beginning, and use Shift+Right Arrow. The documented selection method is character-based, not a promise that a single click will highlight the chip.
- Backspace removes the previous word: the chip was not selected. Undo, reposition the cursor at the chip’s beginning, and select one character before deleting.
- Typing creates another chip: Docs may interpret an
@, date-like entry, or suggested item as a new smart chip. Undo, type the text without triggering a suggestion, and confirm that the result is plain text. - Only part of the visible label changes: the visible label and the chip element are not necessarily separate text characters. Undo and select the chip character itself rather than editing inside its pop-up.
- The Android app behaves differently: the Android help page does not promise computer keyboard behavior. Use the app’s visible selection and edit controls or move the task to a computer.
- The replacement item cannot be inserted: check that the document is in edit mode and that your account can access the person, file, event, or place you are trying to add.
- You removed the wrong content: use Undo immediately, then make a one-chip selection. Avoid continuing to type until the paragraph is restored.
A safe decision sequence
Use this short sequence whenever the desired result is unclear:
- Identify the platform: computer and Android have different documented instructions.
- Identify the chip type: date chips have their own edit and format controls.
- Choose the outcome: change the chip’s value, remove the chip, replace it with words, or insert a different chip.
- Save the context: note any label or date you need to preserve before deleting.
- Select narrowly: on a computer, place the cursor at the chip’s beginning and press Shift+Right Arrow.
- Make one change: delete, type, or insert the replacement.
- Verify immediately: check that neighboring text, links, and line breaks are unchanged.
- Undo if needed: restore the document before trying a different selection.
What Google’s documentation establishes
Google’s computer help explains how to insert smart chips by typing @ or using Insert > Smart chips, and lists people, files, dates, Calendar events, and places among supported options. Its screen-reader guidance explains selecting a chip as a character with Shift+Right Arrow from the chip’s beginning and describes opening the chip pop-up. The date-chip instructions cover editing the date and changing its format. The Android guidance covers insertion and date editing in the mobile app.
Those pages do not state a dedicated, general-purpose remove-or-replace procedure that applies to every chip type and platform. Consequently, deletion and replacement should be presented as careful use of normal Docs editing after selecting the chip, not as a guaranteed chip command. The interface can change, and the controls shown in a chip pop-up depend on the chip type.
