Decide what you can safely change
There are two different problems: cleaning a video you control, and asking a platform to remove somebody else’s copy. The first is an audio-production job. The second is an enforcement request that requires proof and a platform-specific form.

Keep an untouched source
Before opening an editor, make a read-only copy of the project folder, original camera files, audio files, graphics, captions, and export settings. Work from a duplicated project with a new filename. Do not overwrite the only master with a “processed” file: separation effects are destructive, and some platform editors cannot undo saved changes.

Mark every affected moment
Play the complete video and record each start and end time where the unauthorized voice appears. Note whether it speaks alone, overlaps another speaker, or sits under music and sound effects. This timecode list becomes your edit decision list and gives a platform or lawyer precise material to review.
Confirm your authority for the replacement
Use a narrator who has agreed to the recording and to the way you will publish it. Do not clone, prompt, or deliberately imitate another identifiable person without permission. A replacement that merely swaps one unauthorized impersonation for another does not solve the underlying problem.
Determine whether the voice is isolated or mixed
Solo-track audio is the best-case scenario. Mixed audio may be repairable, but no software can promise that it will remove only one voice while leaving every other sound untouched.

A mono file or a stereo file with centered speech can respond differently from a wide stereo mix. Inspect the timeline and waveform before choosing an effect; do not assume that a “voice remover” will know which person you mean.
Remove the voice in a project you control
1. Duplicate the project and media
- Copy the project file and its linked media to a new folder.
- Rename the duplicate with the date and a clear revision label.
- Lock or archive the original so an export cannot overwrite it.
- Import the timecode list and place markers at every affected phrase.
2. Mute a dedicated voice track
If the cloned voice is on a separate track, disable that track for the marked ranges or remove the clip from the duplicate sequence. Leave the original clip available on a hidden or disabled track until the replacement has passed quality checks. Add a short crossfade at each edit so the room tone does not click.

3. Fill the gaps before mixing
Record or import the authorized narration, then cut it into the same sentences. Keep the replacement on a new track. Preserve natural breaths where they help the performance, but remove distracting pauses that make the replacement drift from the picture. Use nearby clean ambience under edits instead of stretching a noisy phrase.
Use Audacity for a local first pass
Audacity provides local processing, so the source can stay on your computer. Its official feature documentation describes OpenVINO AI Music Separation, while its manual documents the older Vocal Reduction and Isolation effect. Neither method guarantees a transparent result.
OpenVINO AI Music Separation
- Open a copy of the audio in Audacity.
- Choose the OpenVINO AI Music Separation command.
- Select “2 stem – Vocal and Instrumental.”
- Let Audacity create the vocal and instrumental stems.
- Solo each stem and listen for the celebrity-like phrases, music attacks, cymbals, reverberation, and other material that moved between stems.
- Mute or delete the vocal stem, then import or record the authorized narration on a separate track.
- Export a new file and keep the original Audacity project unchanged.
This workflow is useful when you need a local, repeatable attempt and can tolerate cleanup. It may also remove portions of a backing track or leave fragments of the voice in the instrumental stem, particularly when the voice has heavy reverb, distortion, or unusual stereo placement.
Vocal Reduction and Isolation
The older effect is designed mainly for center-panned material. It can work when the target voice is centered and instruments are spread toward the sides. It cannot fully remove stereo reverb, and it may reduce or damage any music, effects, or other speakers that share the center. Treat the result as a stem for editing, not proof that the voice has disappeared.
- Import the stereo file and duplicate the track so the unprocessed version remains available.
- Apply Vocal Reduction and Isolation to the duplicate.
- Preview the marked timestamps with headphones.
- Keep the processed version only if the remaining music and effects are acceptable.
- Render a replacement narration underneath the cleaned bed, then export a new master.
When local separation is the wrong choice
Stop and return to the original mix if the process removes kick drums, guitar attacks, ambience, or a legitimate speaker. A lower-volume remnant is not necessarily safer: an intelligible phrase, slogan, or accusation in the cloned voice can still be attributed to the impersonated person. In that case, replace the entire affected section with a clean authorized recording or re-edit the scene.

Separate overlapping speakers in Premiere Pro
Premiere Pro’s Separate Crosstalk analyzes a selected clip and creates separate tracks for detected speakers plus background. It disables the original clip for review, allowing you to compare the generated tracks before committing to a mix.

- It is a premium cloud feature rather than a purely local effect.
- Processing consumes generative credits.
- Availability can depend on geographic, account, and consent restrictions.
- Speaker detection is not a legal finding and does not establish who authorized a recording.
Practical sequence
- Duplicate the sequence and save a new project version.
- Select the clip containing the overlap.
- Run Separate Crosstalk and wait for analysis to finish.
- Play each generated speaker track against the background track at the marked timestamps.
- Mute the track carrying the unauthorized voice, or replace only the affected phrases if the assignment is accurate.
- Restore or rebuild ambience where the analysis created holes.
- Compare the processed sequence with the disabled original before exporting.
Use this route when two people speak at once and a simple center-removal operation would damage both. If the account or region cannot access the feature, export a copy and perform the local workflow instead; do not upload confidential source material to an unapproved service merely to obtain separation.
Replace the words without rebuilding the whole picture
You normally do not need to re-edit every video shot. Keep the existing picture edit and replace the dialogue layer, then make only the timing changes that the new performance requires.
Match the script and timing
- Transcribe the exact words that remain in the picture, including names, numbers, and pauses.
- Record the authorized voice at the original sample rate and in a quiet space.
- Align the first consonant of each sentence to the original visual cue.
- Use clip gain and short edits for syllables that run long or short; avoid extreme time-stretching that creates warbling.
- Preserve intentional breaths and pauses only when they fit the actor’s performance and the cut.
Rebuild the acoustic environment
A replacement recorded in a dry room can sound pasted over the scene. Capture a few seconds of matching room tone, place it under gaps, and use equalization and moderate compression only to match the surrounding dialogue. Add a short fade at every cut. If the original scene contains movement, cars, crowds, or music, automate those layers rather than raising the replacement until it masks the mismatch.
Handle visible lip movement
If the camera shows a face speaking, a new performance may not match the mouth. First try a tighter cut, reaction shot, crop, or cutaway that already exists in the project. If the words must remain on a close-up, expect manual syllable timing and accept that a voice replacement cannot correct every visual mismatch without changing the picture.

Quality-check the cleaned version
- Listen on closed-back headphones for residual phrases, robotic tones, chirps, and phasey reverb.
- Listen on ordinary speakers at a low volume; artifacts hidden by headphones can become obvious in a room.
- Check the first and last syllable of every marked interval against the timecode list.
- Compare music transients, applause, footsteps, and room tone with the untouched source.
- Watch the video with the sound on to find lip-sync drift and edits that click.
- Review captions and transcripts so they no longer attribute the statement to the impersonated person.
- Render a new master, retain the project and edit decision list, and label the export as a replacement version.
Do not publish an apparently clean file until a second listener has checked the high-risk sections without being told where the edits are. Independent listening often catches a remnant that the editor has learned to ignore.

Changing your own file does not change a video already uploaded by another account. Save the page URL, channel or account name, upload date, downloaded copy where lawful, screenshots, and exact timestamps before filing a report. Keep confirmation numbers and emails from the platform.
YouTube
YouTube Help documents three actions for claimed audio: trim the segment, replace the song, or erase the song. Those tools address audio in a video you manage; they do not automatically remove somebody else’s upload. As of June 2025, saved Studio Editor changes could not be reverted, so download or duplicate the source before saving an edit. If the upload uses your identity or falsely suggests your approval, use the platform’s current privacy, impersonation, copyright, or synthetic-media route that best matches the evidence.
TikTok
TikTok offers an online and in-app copyright-infringement report and says: “You may ask us to prevent future copies of a video from re-appearing on TikTok when you submit a report via our online Copyright Infringement Report form.” Include the precise video URL, timestamps, proof of identity or authorization, and a concise explanation of how the cloned voice misrepresents the speaker. TikTok may not adjudicate every dispute between third parties, so distinguish clearly between material you own, material you are authorized to represent, and a general objection to impersonation.

Other hosts
Use the host’s current privacy, impersonation, synthetic-media, or copyright form. Select the route that matches the harm rather than submitting the same text to every category. Preserve the offending file, the original source, and the submission receipt. If a platform requests identity documents, send them only through its official form and retain a record of what was supplied.
Understand the legal issues before making a claim
There is no single universal “voice copyright” rule. Depending on the jurisdiction and context, an unauthorized imitation may raise publicity or personality rights, privacy, passing-off or false-endorsement, performers’ rights, unfair-competition, or consumer-deception theories. A 2026 legal analysis quoting Edina Harbinja of the University of Birmingham and Andres Guadamuz of the University of Sussex describes these as possible routes, not automatic outcomes.
The strength of a claim can depend on whether the voice is recognizable, whether the video implies endorsement, whether the statement harms reputation, how the material was obtained, and where viewers and the publisher are located. Platform removal standards are separate from a court’s legal test. This is general information, not a legal conclusion; consult a lawyer in the relevant jurisdiction before sending a demand or filing suit.

Troubleshoot common failures
The celebrity-like voice is still audible
Inspect both separated stems, not just the one labeled vocal. Lowering the instrumental stem can expose a remnant that was distributed into the background. If words remain intelligible, replace the whole passage rather than repeatedly stacking filters.

Undo the latest destructive render and compare it with the untouched mix. Rebuild the section from an original music stem if you have one. Otherwise, use a clean replacement bed or a cutaway instead of trying to restore every damaged transient with more processing.
Another speaker was removed too
Center-based reduction cannot distinguish people who share the same channel position. Restore the original and try a speaker-separation workflow, or rerecord the complete exchange with authorized performers.
The replacement does not match the lips
Shorten or move phrases at consonant boundaries, use a reaction shot or cutaway, and keep the picture edit otherwise intact. If the mismatch remains obvious, change the shot rather than forcing unnatural time-stretching.
A platform rejects the report
Read the rejection reason, select the category that matches the evidence, and resubmit with exact timestamps, ownership or authorization proof, and a concise explanation. Do not claim copyright ownership of material you do not own; describe impersonation, privacy, or false endorsement when those are the actual issues.
Disclose the finished video accurately
Render a new master from the duplicate project and retain all source files. Follow the platform’s current synthetic-media disclosure rules when the replacement or remaining material is AI-generated. Use a title, thumbnail, and description that do not imply the celebrity approved, narrated, or endorsed the statement. Keep a private record of what was removed, what was replaced, who authorized the new recording, and which version was published.
