On a Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet, an unwanted app can usually be uninstalled, disabled, or hidden. Uninstalling removes the app and frees its storage when Samsung allows it. Disabling keeps the app installed but stops everyday use and removes it from the Apps screen. Hiding changes only what appears on the Home and Apps screens. Which control you see is decided per app and can differ by Galaxy model, Android/One UI version, carrier and region.

Choose the right action first

Before changing anything, identify what you want the result to be. If you want the app and its local files removed, use Uninstall when that button is offered. If the app came with the phone and cannot be deleted, Disable is the stronger reversible option: Samsung says the app remains installed, stops running for everyday use and disappears from the Apps screen. If you only want to clear an icon while leaving the app available, use Hide.

Action Does the app remain installed? What changes day to day? Does it free storage? When it is available
Uninstall No The app is removed from the device and cannot be opened until installed again. Samsung says removing the app frees its storage. Only when the app and device show an Uninstall control.
Disable Yes; its files remain on the device. The app is stopped for everyday use and removed from the Apps screen. No. Disabling does not remove the installed files. Some preinstalled apps offer Disable; Samsung says not all do.
Hide Yes The icon is removed from the Home and Apps screens, but the app is not disabled. No Supported on interfaces that include the Hide apps setting, including the Samsung UK path documented below.

Samsung’s official guides describe the same three-way distinction. See Samsung US app-management instructions, the Samsung UK guide to deleting, disabling and hiding embedded apps, and Samsung Canada’s uninstall-versus-disable explanation. The labels and screen arrangement on your device may not match every example exactly.

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up or down to open the Apps screen.
  2. Touch and hold the app’s icon until its shortcut menu appears.
  3. Tap Uninstall.
  4. Confirm the removal if Samsung displays a confirmation prompt.

After confirmation, the icon should disappear and the app is no longer installed. Samsung describes uninstalling as removing the app and freeing storage. The amount recovered depends on the app; no universal storage figure applies to every Galaxy model or app.

Check the app’s Settings page when the icon menu has no Uninstall button

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Select the app you want to examine. You may need to use the search control or sort the list.
  4. Look for Uninstall. If it is present, tap it and confirm.

If Settings also lacks Uninstall, do not assume the procedure failed. The app may be preinstalled with deletion restricted, or your particular software build may provide only Disable or Hide. Samsung’s US and UK support pages both note that available actions vary by app and device.

What to check before uninstalling

Confirm the exact app name before you remove it. Samsung phones can show similarly named services, and an icon that looks unfamiliar may belong to a feature you still use. Open the app if you need to identify it, and check whether it contains downloads, saved preferences or an account you will need later. If the app is used for messaging, authentication or a device-specific feature, make a note of any settings you may have to recreate after reinstalling.

Uninstall only when the control is actually offered. Do not treat a missing button as an invitation to use an unsupported workaround. Samsung’s consumer instructions rely on the controls presented in Apps settings and do not require advanced system modification.

How do I disable preinstalled apps on my Samsung Galaxy?

Use Disable when an unwanted preinstalled app cannot be uninstalled and you want it out of normal use. Disabling is reversible, but it does not reclaim the app’s installed storage.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Choose the preinstalled app.
  4. Tap Disable, if that button is offered.
  5. Confirm when prompted.

Samsung Canada describes the result this way: “Disabling prevents an app from running and removes it from the Apps screen, but the app remains installed on the device.” In practical terms, the app’s files stay available so that you can enable it later, while the ordinary Apps screen no longer presents it as an app you can open.

Not every preinstalled package can be disabled. Essential components may have neither Uninstall nor Disable. Samsung’s UK guidance specifically says that some pre-installed apps can be deleted, while required apps such as Phone, Messages, Contacts, Gallery and My Files cannot be deleted because they support basic device functions. The exact protected list can differ by model, region and carrier, so use the controls shown on your own phone rather than treating that list as universal.

When Disable is the better choice

Disable is appropriate when you know you do not want an embedded app in everyday use but want an easy way back. It keeps the package on the device, so it is not a substitute for storage cleanup. It also differs from hiding: a hidden app remains available and is merely absent from the Home and Apps screens, while a disabled app is stopped for ordinary use and removed from the Apps screen.

If the Disable button is missing, do not assume the app is defective. Samsung explicitly says that some preinstalled apps cannot be disabled. Leave essential or unfamiliar components alone unless your Galaxy presents a supported action for that specific app.

How to hide an app when removal is unavailable

Hiding is a display choice, not an uninstall. It is useful when you want a clean Home or Apps screen but still need the app installed, or when neither Uninstall nor Disable is available.

On the Samsung UK interface documented by Samsung, use this path:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Apps screen.
  2. Tap the Apps screen menu (the available icon can vary by One UI version).
  3. Choose Settings.
  4. Tap Hide apps on Home and Apps screens.
  5. Select the app you want to hide.
  6. Tap Done.

The icon is removed from the Home and Apps screens, but the app remains installed. Hiding does not stop the app or free storage. To show it again, return to Settings > Hide apps on Home and Apps screens, remove the app from the hidden list and tap Done. If your Galaxy uses different wording, search Settings for “hide apps” or consult the model-specific layout; Samsung warns that menu names and locations vary.

Because hiding changes visibility only, it is the least disruptive choice when you are unsure whether another feature depends on the app. You can later remove it from the hidden list without reinstalling anything.

Why can’t I uninstall an app on my Samsung phone?

The most common reason is that the app is preinstalled and the device does not permit deletion. “Preinstalled” does not automatically mean either removable or locked: Samsung ships some preloaded apps that can be deleted, some that can be disabled and some essential apps that cannot be deleted.

Use this decision path rather than trying to force removal:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Uninstall appears: use it if you no longer need the app.
  • Uninstall is absent but Disable appears: disable the app to stop everyday use while retaining its files.
  • Neither appears but Hide apps is available: hide the icon if visibility is the problem.
  • No removal or hide option is shown: leave the required component in place. Samsung’s documented consumer steps do not call for advanced system modification.

Do not disable an unfamiliar system component simply because its name looks technical. If another Samsung feature depends on it, removing it from normal use can create confusing behavior. The safest approach is to act only on a clearly identified app and to keep the reversible option—Disable or Hide—when you are uncertain.

What changes after uninstalling, disabling or hiding?

Uninstalling

The app is removed from the device. Any account session, preferences or downloaded content stored only inside that app may need to be set up again if you install it later. Samsung directs users to Google Play or Galaxy Store for reinstalling an app that was uninstalled. Since storage recovered depends on the particular app, Samsung does not provide one figure that applies to every Galaxy phone or tablet.

Disabling

The app remains installed, but Samsung removes it from the Apps screen and prevents ordinary use. Because its files remain, disabling is not a storage-cleanup method. It is better suited to a preinstalled app that you do not want to run or see but may need to restore later.

Hiding

The app remains installed and is not stopped. Only its presence on the Home and Apps screens changes. Hiding therefore solves clutter, not storage use or everyday app availability.

How do I get a disabled app back?

Re-enable a disabled app from its Settings entry:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Find and select the disabled app. Depending on the software version, you may need to turn on a filter for disabled apps or use the search field.
  4. Tap Enable.

The app should become available again and return to the Apps screen. If the Enable button is not present, verify that you selected the same app rather than a similarly named package; labels and filters vary across Galaxy software versions.

How do I reinstall an app I uninstalled?

Open Google Play Store or Galaxy Store, search for the app, and install it again. Samsung’s support guidance notes that you may have to sign in again or reconfigure settings after reinstalling. Apps that were part of a carrier or regional package may not appear in both stores, so use the store in which the app was originally offered.

Model, software and regional differences to expect

There is no single Galaxy Apps screen that applies to every phone and tablet. One UI revisions can move the Apps screen menu, rename a setting or present Uninstall and Disable in a different order. Tablets can use a different Home-screen orientation, while carrier-customized firmware can include additional preinstalled apps or restrictions. Samsung’s US guidance explicitly notes that screens can vary, and its UK guidance likewise qualifies the steps by device and software version.

Use the names shown on your device as the authority. If a step says “Apps screen menu,” look for the menu icon on the screen where all apps are displayed. If you cannot find Hide apps, use Settings search for “hide” rather than assuming the feature is missing from every model. Before following instructions written for another Galaxy generation, confirm that your phone or tablet is running the same One UI and Android release.

A safe cleanup checklist

  • Identify the exact app name and icon before changing it; similarly named Samsung components can serve different purposes.
  • Open the app once and check whether it contains files, downloads or an account you still need.
  • Choose Uninstall only when that control is offered and you are comfortable removing the app.
  • Choose Disable when you want the app stopped but reversible and when Samsung presents that button.
  • Choose Hide when the goal is a cleaner screen rather than less installed software.
  • Do not expect Disable or Hide to free storage; Samsung associates storage recovery with uninstalling.
  • Record any settings you may need to recreate before uninstalling an app used for authentication, messaging or device-specific features.
  • After the change, check the Apps screen and Settings > Apps to confirm the state you intended.

Quick answers to common Galaxy app questions

Can every Samsung preinstalled app be removed?

No. Samsung allows deletion for some preloaded apps, offers Disable for some others and protects certain essential apps. The available button is specific to the app, device and software build.

Does disabling an app save storage?

No. Disabling leaves the app installed. Samsung distinguishes it from uninstalling, which removes the app and frees storage.

Is hiding the same as disabling?

No. Hiding removes the icon from the Home and Apps screens while leaving the app installed and available. Disabling also leaves it installed, but stops everyday use and removes it from the Apps screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is there no Disable button?

Samsung says not all preinstalled apps can be disabled. If neither Disable nor Uninstall is shown, the app may be a required component on that model. You can hide it if your interface offers Hide apps, but do not force removal with unsupported system changes.

Will reinstalling restore my old settings?

Not necessarily. Samsung notes that you may need to sign in again or reconfigure settings after reinstalling an uninstalled app. Treat reinstalling as a fresh setup unless the app itself restores your information.

Can I undo these changes?

Yes, within the limits of the device. A disabled app can be enabled from Settings > Apps. A hidden app can be removed from the hidden-apps list. An uninstalled app can be installed again from Google Play or Galaxy Store, although sign-in and configuration may be required.

Bottom line for decluttering a Galaxy device

Start with the least disruptive action that meets your goal. Use Uninstall when Samsung offers it and you want the app gone. Use Disable for a removable-from-daily-use preinstalled app when deletion is blocked. Use Hide when only the icon is bothering you. Because Samsung changes controls by model, software version, carrier and region, the option shown on the app’s own menu is the reliable answer for your Galaxy phone or tablet.
