Use the narrowest control that matches the information you want changed. Edit the account, profile, seller, author, device or service field when one value is wrong. Use Amazon’s browsing-history or recommendation controls for those activities. For a formal request to access or delete personal information, Amazon’s Privacy Notice directs customers to Data Privacy Queries where applicable law provides that right. Closing your entire account is a separate, irreversible action that affects linked services and still may not erase every legally retained record.
The right process depends on what Amazon holds, which account or service contains it, and whether you want to keep using Amazon.

Choose the right Amazon privacy path
Changing a profile field, removing a viewed item, deleting Alexa recordings and submitting a legal privacy request are different operations. They can affect different systems and have different eligibility rules. Start by identifying the smallest change that solves your problem.

First identify where the information lives
Amazon’s Privacy Notice covers many stores, services, devices and applications. The same person can also have more than one Amazon account if different email addresses or phone numbers were used. A correction submitted from one account will not automatically change a separate account.

Classify the data
- Account details: name, contact details or other profile fields attached to a customer account.
- Order records: purchase and transaction information, which may be subject to legal retention even after closure.
- Browsing and recommendation activity: viewed items, searches or activity used to personalize suggestions.
- Alexa activity: voice recordings, transcripts and typed requests associated with Alexa.
- Seller information: details managed in Seller Central and Seller Account Information.
- Author information: details managed through Author Portal or Author Central.
- Device or application data: information tied to a particular Amazon device, app or service rather than the general shopping account.
Confirm the relevant account
Sign in using each email address or phone number you may have used. Check whether the inaccurate value appears in a customer account, a seller or author profile, an Alexa service, or another application. Record the service name and the exact field or activity entry before changing anything. This prevents a request for one service from being mistaken for a request about another.
Correct ordinary account and profile information
For a normal correction, change the source setting that owns the value. Amazon’s privacy materials distinguish these controls from a formal privacy-rights request: editing a field fixes that field, while a Data Privacy Queries request asks Amazon to handle personal information under applicable law.
Customer account details
- Sign in to the Amazon account that contains the inaccurate information.
- Open the account or profile area where that field is maintained.
- Replace the incorrect value with the accurate one and save the change.
- Sign out and back in, or revisit the profile, to confirm that the new value appears.
- If another Amazon account uses the old value, repeat the process there; accounts created with different email addresses or phone numbers are separate.
If you cannot find an editable field, identify the service that supplied the data and use that service’s support or privacy route instead of changing an unrelated profile setting.
Seller information
Amazon specifically points sellers to Seller Central and Seller Account Information for seller data. Sign in to the seller account, open the applicable account-information field, enter the correction and save it. A customer-account edit will not necessarily update a seller profile.

Author information
Authors should use Author Portal or Author Central, depending on where the inaccurate author information is maintained. Check both only if you used both services; do not assume that changing a customer profile changes an author record.
Delete Amazon browsing history or change recommendations
Amazon identifies dedicated controls for browsing history and recommendations. Use those controls when you want to remove an activity item or alter personalization while keeping your account.
Remove a browsing-history item
- Sign in to the customer account whose activity you want to change.
- Open Amazon’s browsing-history control.
- Locate the item or activity entry you no longer want shown.
- Use the available remove or clear action and confirm if Amazon asks.
- Check the page again to verify that the selected entry is no longer listed.
Removing a visible browsing entry is a targeted history action. It does not mean every record associated with the visit, order or account has been erased, and it does not substitute for a formal deletion request.

Change recommendation activity
Use Amazon’s dedicated recommendation controls when suggestions are based on an item or activity you do not want influencing personalization. These controls can change future recommendations, but they are not equivalent to deleting all personal information Amazon holds about you. If your goal is broader access or deletion, use Data Privacy Queries instead.

Submit a formal access or deletion request through Data Privacy Queries
Amazon’s current Privacy Notice says: “In addition, to the extent required by applicable law, you may have the right to request access to or delete your personal information.” The notice identifies Data Privacy Queries as the route for those requests. The exact options and eligibility depend on your location, the type of information and the law that applies.
Prepare a precise request
- Identify the account by the email address or phone number used with the relevant service.
- Name the service or account involved, such as a customer account, seller profile, author profile, device or Alexa.
- State whether you are requesting access, deletion or both.
- Describe the categories or records concerned rather than saying only “everything.”
- For a correction-related request, specify the inaccurate field, the current value and the exact corrected value.
- Explain if multiple accounts may be involved and list each identifier you can verify.
Submit and interpret the response
- Open Data Privacy Queries from the privacy route identified in Amazon’s Privacy Notice.
- Complete the identity and account information Amazon requests.
- Describe the data and the action you want in specific terms.
- Submit the request and retain the confirmation or case details.
- Read Amazon’s response for the scope, legal basis and any records it says must be retained.
Do not treat a formal request as a guaranteed universal deletion. Amazon qualifies the right by applicable law, and the reviewed official materials do not establish one response time for every country or request type.
Delete Alexa voice recordings, transcripts and typed requests
Alexa has its own privacy controls. You can review and delete voice recordings, transcripts and typed requests in the Alexa app or on an Echo Show, or use Amazon’s online Alexa privacy settings.
In the Alexa app or on Echo Show
- Open the Alexa app, or use the Alexa controls on an Echo Show.
- Go to More > Alexa Privacy.
- Review the available voice recordings, transcripts and typed requests.
- Select the entries or period you want to delete and confirm the deletion action offered by the interface.
- Return to the activity view to check that the selected records no longer appear.
The exact deletion timing depends on the information and the systems that process it. Amazon says it begins secure deletion after a request, but deletion may take time. Removing Alexa activity can reduce personalization or affect features that rely on that history.

Know Alexa’s boundaries
- Deletion from Amazon’s cloud does not necessarily remove copies held by third parties or stored locally outside Amazon’s cloud.
- De-identified information that is no longer linked to you may not be deleted.
- If data helped improve services or train systems, those systems may continue to retain and use the resulting information after the underlying data is deleted from data stores.
These limits mean that deleting an Alexa recording is a specific activity change, not a promise that every derivative, local or third-party copy disappears immediately.

Account closure is much broader than correcting a field or deleting history. Amazon’s help instructions say closure affects linked services across global Amazon sites and cannot be restored. Use it only when you are prepared to lose access to the account and its connected content.
Before you start
- Review the products and services associated with the account.
- Download uploaded content you may need later.
- Save invoices and other purchase records needed for support, returns, warranties or accounting.
- Check whether another household member or business user relies on the account.
- Confirm that a targeted correction, Alexa deletion or Data Privacy Queries request would not solve the problem with less disruption.
Closure procedure
- Sign in to the Amazon account you intend to close.
- Review the associated products and services shown in Amazon’s closure flow.
- Select the option for permanent account closure and data deletion.
- Submit the closure request.
- Reply to Amazon’s confirmation email or text within five days to verify the request.
Amazon states that the five-day period is a verification window, not a general deadline for deleting all data. If you do not complete the confirmation, the closure may not proceed.
What may remain after deletion or closure
Neither a targeted setting change nor account closure guarantees that every record disappears. Amazon’s help information says it is legally required to retain some data, including order history, for purposes such as tax, accounting and fraud prevention. A closure can therefore remove your ability to use linked services while certain records remain in retained systems.
Alexa deletion has additional boundaries: third-party or local copies may persist, de-identified information may no longer be removable as personal information, and service-improvement or trained-system outputs may continue to exist. These are different from a visible account page, so checking that a page is empty is not proof that every related record has been erased.
How to write a correction request that can be acted on
If a field cannot be edited directly and you need to contact privacy support, make the request unambiguous. Include:
- Identity: the account email address or phone number and any other identifier Amazon asks you to verify.
- Location: the Amazon service, device, application or profile where the value appears.
- Problem: the exact field or record that is inaccurate.
- Correction: the precise value that should replace it.
- Scope: whether you want only a correction, access to related information, or deletion where applicable.
- Account mapping: any additional account identifiers if you used more than one email address or phone number.
Keep a copy of what you submitted and the date. This helps you distinguish a pending formal request from a simple profile edit and gives support the information needed to locate the right service.
Troubleshoot common situations
The wrong value still appears after editing
Check whether you changed the account that owns the value. Then look for a second profile, seller or author service using another email address or phone number. If the field is displayed by a device or application rather than the main account, use that service’s own setting.
An item disappeared from browsing history but recommendations did not change
Browsing history and recommendation activity use dedicated controls and are not identical. Use the recommendation control for the activity affecting suggestions. If you want broader deletion, submit a Data Privacy Queries request rather than repeatedly clearing visible history.
You deleted Alexa activity but still notice related personalization
Deletion can affect personalization, but timing depends on Amazon’s systems. Local or third-party copies may remain, and de-identified or service-improvement data can have separate treatment. Review Alexa Privacy again and use Data Privacy Queries if your concern extends beyond Alexa activity controls.
You are considering closure because a single record is wrong
Closure is permanent and removes access to linked services. First try the source-field correction, the relevant history or recommendation control, Alexa Privacy, or a formal Data Privacy Queries request. Close the account only when a full exit is intentional.
