Wash the bottle with warm water and mild dish soap, scrub the inside and cap with a soft sponge or bottle brush, rinse well, then air-dry every part completely with the lid off. If an odor or stain remains, check the bottle maker’s care instructions before trying a soak or cleaner: plastic types, caps, and other components do not all tolerate the same treatments.
How to wash a plastic water bottle
- Empty and take apart the bottle. Remove the cap and separate other pieces only if the manufacturer says they are removable.
- Wash with warm, soapy water. Use mild dish soap and a soft sponge or bottle brush to clean the inside, the cap, and any removable parts. A brush can help reach a narrow neck or the bottom.
- Rinse thoroughly. Flush away soap and loosened residue from the bottle and every part.
- Air-dry completely. Set the pieces aside to dry before putting them back together; leave the lid off while the bottle is drying or stored unused.
This is the baseline method in the Tasmania Department of Health’s food-safety guidance and the SodaStream bottle-care instructions. Drying matters too: SodaStream and Dopper’s care guidance advise letting parts dry before reassembly.

If the bottle still smells
First check the care instructions for your exact bottle. SodaStream describes an overnight soak for its bottles using either baking soda mixed with warm water or white vinegar mixed with warm water. Afterward, wash the bottle and rinse it thoroughly. This is SodaStream’s product-specific advice, not a universal formula for every plastic bottle; another maker may restrict soaking or particular ingredients.

If you see stains
Start with soap, warm water, and gentle scrubbing. If a mark remains, use only a cleaner described as suitable for plastic and follow the bottle maker’s directions. For transparent plastic, Mepal’s plastic-care guidance recommends mild, water-soluble household cleaners, avoiding abrasives and solvents, and testing a plastic-cleaning product on a hidden area first.
Use a soft cloth, sponge, or brush rather than a scouring pad. A cleaner that is safe for one plastic product may not be suitable for another, so the bottle’s own instructions take priority.

Check before using heat or stronger cleaners
- Dishwasher: Use one only if the bottle is labeled dishwasher-safe. The Tasmania Department of Health guide makes this qualification; do not assume that every plastic bottle or cap can go in a dishwasher.
- Hot water: Follow the maker’s temperature guidance. SodaStream specifically says to hand-wash its bottles with cold or lukewarm water, which should not be generalized to other brands.
- Abrasives, solvents, and chemicals: Avoid them unless the bottle maker explicitly permits them. Mepal cautions against abrasives and solvents for transparent plastic; Dopper warns users of its products against abrasives, solvents, bleach, and chemical cleaners. Those warnings are product-specific, so consult your own bottle’s instructions.
- Removable pieces: Take apart only what the maker says can be removed, and dry each piece fully before reassembly.
When to stop trying treatments
If ordinary washing does not clear the odor or mark, do not keep escalating to harsher chemicals, abrasive tools, or hotter water without manufacturer approval. Check the bottle’s care page or label for an approved next step. The sources do not establish a single chemical treatment that is safe and effective for every plastic bottle.
