An under-sink reverse-osmosis (RO) system provides the broadest treatment described in U.S. Environmental Protection Agency guidance, but it needs plumbing, sends reject water to the drain, and requires regular cartridge and membrane changes. A granular activated-carbon pitcher or faucet filter is simpler and wastes little water, but its performance depends on the specific model and certified contaminant claims.
No consumer filter should be advertised as removing 100% of microplastics. Official guidance does not establish one universal removal percentage for every household model, so compare certification, stated contaminants, maintenance requirements and water efficiency rather than relying on a generic “microplastic-proof” label.

What microplastics in drinking water mean
Microplastics are small plastic particles that can enter water during manufacturing, use and disposal of plastic products, as well as through atmospheric and wastewater pathways. Their size, shape, polymer type and attached chemicals vary, so “microplastics” is not a single contaminant with one predictable treatment response.

Dr Maria Neira, WHO Director of the Department of Public Health, Environment and Social Determinants of Health, summarized the position this way: “Based on the limited information we have, microplastics in drinking water don’t appear to pose a health risk at current levels. But we need to find out more.” WHO says particles larger than 150 micrometres are not likely to be absorbed, uptake of smaller particles is expected to be limited, and evidence about nano-sized particles is extremely limited.

That uncertainty does not make treatment pointless. A filter can reduce particles and other contaminants reaching a drinking-water tap, while also addressing established chemical or aesthetic concerns. It does mean that a filter’s certified claims and correct maintenance matter more than a broad promise that it “removes microplastics.”
WHO reports that conventional drinking-water treatment can remove particles smaller than one micrometre and that wastewater treatment can remove more than 90% of microplastics, with the highest removal in tertiary filtration. Those figures describe municipal or wastewater treatment contexts, not a guaranteed result for a particular household cartridge. Tap and bottled water are both covered by WHO’s assessment, so switching to bottled water is not a proven microplastics solution.
Which home treatment is right for your tap?
Start with the scope of treatment you need. If your concern is drinking and cooking water at one kitchen fixture, a point-of-use (POU) device avoids treating water used for toilets, bathing and laundry. Whole-house treatment is a larger project and is not automatically justified by a concern limited to one drinking-water tap.
| Method | How it treats water | What to verify | Water use and installation | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under-sink reverse osmosis | A semipermeable membrane separates dissolved substances and particles under pressure; pretreatment cartridges protect the membrane. | Exact contaminant claims and NSF/ANSI 58 status. A WaterSense label indicates water efficiency, not a blanket microplastics claim. | Plumbed to one fixture. Typical systems can generate five gallons or more of reject water for each gallon treated; WaterSense-labeled systems must send 2.3 gallons or less to the drain per gallon treated. | Broad reduction at one drinking-water tap when installation, maintenance and reject water are acceptable. |
| Granular activated carbon (GAC) | Porous carbon media adsorb some chemicals and can trap particles as water passes through the bed. Performance depends on media, flow and design. | The model’s specific contaminant claim and applicable independent certification, including NSF/ANSI 53 where relevant. Do not convert a carbon claim into a universal microplastics percentage. | Usually a pitcher, faucet-mounted unit or under-sink cartridge. Little or no reject water; installation ranges from filling a reservoir to changing a cartridge. | Simplicity, low water waste and treatment of the contaminants listed on the product’s certification. |
| Ion exchange | Resin exchanges charged ions in water for ions held on the resin. | The exact chemical contaminant addressed and the resin’s certification. It is primarily a chemical-treatment technology, not a general microplastics guarantee. | Can be incorporated into POU equipment; replacement and possible regeneration depend on the design. | A documented ionic contaminant for which the device has a certified claim. |
| Whole-house treatment | Treats water at the point it enters the home, using one or more technologies. | Evidence that all household fixtures require treatment, plus flow-rate, plumbing and maintenance specifications. | More complex installation and higher treated volume. The cited EPA guidance focuses on POU systems. | A documented household-wide need, not merely a desire to improve one drinking-water tap. |
Neither carbon nor RO should be selected solely because a package uses the word “microplastics.” Ask what was tested, under which standard, at what flow rate and capacity, and whether the claim applies to the exact model number you will install.

How reverse osmosis works, and what it costs in water
The membrane process
EPA defines POU RO as a device connected to one fixture, commonly under a kitchen sink. A pump or household water pressure drives water through a semipermeable membrane. Pretreatment cartridges commonly remove sediment and protect the membrane; the membrane then divides the incoming stream into treated permeate and a reject (concentrate) stream carrying material that did not pass through.
Because the membrane is a physical and chemical barrier, RO can address a broad range of dissolved and particulate contaminants when the system is designed and certified for them. That broad capability is why it is the most comprehensive household option covered by the cited EPA guidance. It still does not justify a universal claim that every RO model removes every microplastic particle or achieves a particular percentage.
Reject-water calculation
Water efficiency is the main operating trade-off. EPA says typical POU RO systems can generate five gallons or more of reject water for every gallon of treated water. For example, producing one gallon for drinking could send at least five gallons to the drain in a typical system. WaterSense-labeled POU RO systems must send 2.3 gallons or less down the drain per gallon treated. The label addresses the reject-water ratio; it is not a microplastics-performance certification.

If you choose RO, check the manufacturer’s stated recovery or reject ratio and consider how you will manage the concentrate. Some installations route it to a drain, while a properly designed setup may allow collection for a non-potable use permitted by local plumbing practice. Do not route reject water back into the drinking-water line.

Installation requirements
- A cold-water supply connection and a dedicated faucet or compatible dispenser.
- Space under the sink for prefilters, the membrane housing, storage tank (if included) and tubing.
- A drain connection installed according to the manual and local plumbing rules.
- Water pressure within the model’s specified range; low pressure can reduce production and increase waste.
- Initial flushing or conditioning exactly as the manufacturer directs before drinking the product water.
Membrane and cartridge replacement
There is no single replacement interval that applies to every RO membrane. Feed-water quality, volume, pressure, pretreatment and the manufacturer’s design determine service life. Replace sediment and carbon cartridges and the membrane on the schedule in the manual, or sooner if the system’s flow, taste, odor or quality indicator shows a problem. EPA emphasizes that filters are effective only when maintained according to the manufacturer’s replacement instructions.
How carbon filtration helps—and where it stops
Adsorption and particle capture
Granular activated carbon is a porous medium. EPA describes it as trapping contaminants in its pore structure and surface. Carbon is especially useful when the certified claim addresses a known chemical or aesthetic concern, such as a taste or odor compound. A carbon bed can also retain some particles, but the result depends on particle size, bed depth, flow rate, contact time and whether the device includes a separate sediment or membrane stage.
Because those design variables differ, an activated-carbon label alone is not evidence of a particular microplastics-removal percentage. Treat any percentage as model-specific only when an independent test and the exact certification document support it.
Pitcher and faucet-mounted options
A pitcher requires no plumbing: fill the reservoir, allow the cartridge to process the water and replace it as directed. A faucet-mounted unit diverts water through a cartridge when its filtered setting is selected. Both have low installation effort and normally do not create an RO-style reject stream. Their disadvantages are limited capacity, slower flow and the possibility of bypassing the filter if the cartridge is overdue or the faucet is left on an unfiltered setting.

Under-sink carbon cartridges provide more capacity and a dedicated faucet while retaining the low-waste advantage. They still require adequate space, correct cartridge seating and scheduled replacement. Verify whether the certified claim applies to the filtered or unfiltered faucet position and whether a flow restrictor is required for the stated performance.
Understanding NSF and WaterSense labels
NSF/ANSI 53 for applicable carbon claims
EPA points consumers to independent certification, including NSF/ANSI 53 for applicable carbon-filter claims. The standard does not mean every product certified to it removes microplastics. Certification is tied to named contaminants and test conditions, so read the listing for the exact model and the contaminants it covers.
NSF/ANSI 58 for reverse osmosis
NSF/ANSI 58 is the relevant certification standard EPA cites for RO systems. Check the contaminant-reduction claims attached to the model, not merely the presence of the standard number. A system can be certified for one set of substances without being certified for another.
WaterSense for RO efficiency
WaterSense identifies more water-efficient POU RO systems. The specification requires 2.3 gallons or less of reject water per gallon treated. It says nothing by itself about microplastics removal, membrane pore behavior or reduction of a particular chemical.

How to verify a claim
- Write down the exact model number, including any suffix that identifies a replacement cartridge or regional version.
- Look up that model in the certifier’s directory and open the performance data sheet.
- Confirm the contaminant, rated capacity and flow conditions in the listing.
- Check whether the claim applies to the complete system or only to a specific cartridge used in a specified housing.
- Compare the listed replacement interval and installation requirements with your household’s water use.
A step-by-step plan for reducing exposure at home
- Read your utility’s water-quality report. Identify regulated contaminants, treatment methods and any local advisories. WHO recommends prioritizing microbial pathogens and known chemical risks while microplastics measurement and health evidence continue to develop.
- Define the treatment boundary. Decide whether only one drinking-water faucet needs treatment or whether a documented household-wide problem justifies whole-house equipment.
- List the contaminants you want to reduce. Separate an established chemical concern from a general desire to reduce particles. This list determines which certification claims are relevant.
- Shortlist technologies. Choose RO for broad POU treatment with acceptable reject water and maintenance; choose carbon when simplicity, low water waste and a specific certified claim matter; consider ion exchange only for a documented ionic contaminant.
- Compare complete operating requirements. Record certification, rated capacity, flow, reject-water ratio, installation steps, cartridge and membrane schedule, replacement availability and expected maintenance effort.
- Install exactly as directed. Use the specified tubing, fittings, orientation and pressure range. Flush or condition cartridges for the stated time and volume before collecting drinking water.
- Keep a service log. Record installation dates, cartridge changes, membrane changes, filter hours or gallons if the system tracks them, and any changes in taste, odor, flow or leaks.
- Recheck after maintenance. Confirm that the filtered faucet is selected, fittings are dry, the storage tank fills normally and the first batches are discarded when the manual requires it.
Maintenance, failure signs and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Flow becomes noticeably slower | Clogged sediment or carbon cartridge, exhausted membrane, low feed pressure or a closed valve. | Confirm the supply valve is open, check pressure and replace cartridges or membrane according to the manual. Do not extend a cartridge simply because water still comes out. |
| RO produces very little water | Low pressure, a blocked prefilter, cold feed water or a fouled membrane. | Check the model’s pressure requirement, replace overdue pretreatment and inspect tubing for kinks. A pressure booster may be needed only if the manufacturer permits one. |
| Reject-water flow is continuous | Incorrect drain connection, an automatic shutoff problem, inadequate pressure or a saturated membrane. | Verify the drain saddle and tubing, check pressure and service the system as directed. Shut off the supply if a fault could cause a leak. |
| Unexpected taste or odor | New carbon media, an overdue cartridge, stagnant water or biofilm in a neglected system. | Perform the specified startup flush, replace the cartridge on schedule and sanitize only with a procedure approved for that model. |
| Leaks at a fitting | Cut tubing, an incompletely inserted tube, a damaged O-ring or excessive pressure. | Turn off the feed, depressurize, reseat or replace the fitting or seal and follow the installation diagram. Do not operate a leaking unit unattended. |
| Filter was used past its rated capacity | Replacement date or gallon limit was missed. | Replace the cartridge or membrane and reset any usage indicator. Capacity is part of the tested performance, not merely a convenience estimate. |
Maintenance is part of treatment performance. A certified device with an exhausted cartridge, bypassed housing or incorrect installation cannot be assumed to deliver the performance shown in its certification listing.
One drinking-water tap or the whole house?
When point-of-use treatment is enough
POU equipment is usually the proportionate choice when the goal is water for drinking, cooking, coffee or infant formula at one kitchen fixture. It treats the water actually consumed without filtering large volumes used for bathing and cleaning. Under-sink RO and under-sink carbon systems can both feed a dedicated faucet; pitchers and faucet-mounted units are simpler when capacity and flow are adequate.
When broader treatment may be justified
Consider whole-house treatment only after a documented household need, such as a contaminant present at multiple fixtures or a requirement to protect appliances and plumbing. Whole-house equipment must handle peak flow, pressure loss, installation space and much greater cartridge capacity. The EPA material cited here focuses on POU systems, so do not infer that a whole-house unit is necessary for a microplastics concern limited to drinking water.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming “NSF certified” is a complete answer. Certification applies to named claims and standards; read which contaminant and test conditions are listed.
- Using a WaterSense label as proof of microplastics removal. WaterSense addresses RO reject-water efficiency.
- Expecting one universal percentage. Official sources do not provide a single consumer-model microplastics-removal number that applies to every filter.
- Ignoring flow and capacity. A filter operated faster than its tested flow or beyond its rated gallons may not perform as listed.
- Skipping startup flushing. New media and manufacturing residues must be flushed when the manual requires it.
- Keeping an overdue cartridge because the water still tastes normal. Taste is not a reliable indicator that a cartridge remains within its certified capacity.
- Choosing bottled water as a guaranteed workaround. WHO’s assessment covers bottled as well as tap water and identifies evidence gaps for both.
- Treating microplastics as the only water-safety issue. Follow local advisories and prioritize microbial and known chemical hazards identified by your utility or health authority.
How to make a defensible choice
Choose an under-sink RO system when broad reduction at one tap outweighs installation work, membrane changes and reject-water volume. Select a carbon pitcher, faucet unit or under-sink cartridge when low complexity and low water waste are more important and the model has a certified claim for your identified contaminants. Use ion exchange for a specific ionic contaminant, not as a general substitute for particle treatment. In every case, verify the exact model, install it correctly and replace media on schedule.
