What’s actually slowing this PC down?

You can often remove Android malware without deleting your photos, contacts, and other personal files. Start with reversible steps: check the symptoms, run Google Play Protect, install system and security updates, remove untrusted apps, test in safe mode, and secure your Google Account. A factory reset is a last resort because it erases data stored on the phone and uninstalls every app and its data.
Google defines malware as “unsafe or unwanted software that can steal your info or harm your device.” The warning signs below are reasons to investigate, not proof that malware is present.

What Android malware can look like
Google lists several possible signs of malware or other unwanted software:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Persistent pop-up advertisements, especially outside the browser or on the home screen.
- Messages claiming that the phone has a virus or needs an urgent cleanup.
- Unexpected slowness, crashes, overheating, or other malfunctions.
- Browser redirects, a changed home page, or settings changing without your action.
- Messages sent to your contacts that you did not write.
These symptoms can also come from a buggy app, an aggressive website notification, a failing component, or an account compromise. Treat an unsolicited “your phone is infected” alert as untrusted content: do not tap its buttons or install the software it promotes. Close the page or notification and investigate through Android settings and Google Play instead.

Choose the least-destructive cleanup route first
The following order preserves the most data while progressively narrowing the cause. None of the steps guarantees that every threat will be detected, but the first five are reversible or limited in scope.
| Route | Primary target | Reversible? | What it can remove or change | Device-specific procedure? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Play Protect scan | Apps and potentially harmful software | Yes | Can warn about harmful apps and, in some cases, remove them | No, although labels can vary |
| System and security updates | Android and security components | Usually not rolled back by normal users | Installs available fixes and protections; does not erase personal files | Yes, menu names and timing vary |
| Uninstall suspicious apps | A downloaded or sideloaded app | Usually; reinstalling may be possible | Removes that app and its locally stored app data | No, but administrator or accessibility permissions may need attention |
| Safe-mode diagnosis | Third-party apps as a group | Yes; restart normally to exit | Temporarily prevents downloaded apps from running, helping identify the cause | Yes |
| Google Account security review | Account access and sessions | Yes | Lets you address unfamiliar devices, sessions, or security issues | No |
| Factory reset | The entire handset | No, unless a verified backup exists | Erases phone data and uninstalls all apps and their data | Yes |
This order also separates three different problems that can look alike: an unwanted app, an Android component that needs an update, and an account that someone else has accessed. A scan targets apps, safe mode helps test whether downloaded apps are involved, and Security Checkup addresses sign-ins and sessions. A reset affects the handset’s local storage, but it cannot substitute for changing a compromised account password.
1. Run Google Play Protect before deleting anything
Google says Play Protect checks apps before download, scans apps from other sources, warns about harmful apps, and may remove an app it identifies as harmful. Google’s Android Ecosystem Security FAQs summarize its purpose as: “Google Play Protect helps keep Android devices safe and secure.” That wording describes its role, not a promise that every threat will be caught.
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile picture or initial in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Play Protect.
- Review the scan result and start a scan if the page offers a scan button.
- Open Play Protect settings and make sure app scanning is enabled.
- If you install apps from outside Google Play, enable the option for improved detection of harmful apps from unknown sources.
The Play Protect page also shows when the last scan ran. If it flags an app, follow the removal or disable instructions shown there rather than searching for a separate “cleaner” advertised in a pop-up.
Record the name of anything Play Protect flags before taking action, especially if you need to explain the issue to the phone maker. If the warning identifies an app you recognize, check whether it came from an unofficial source and avoid reinstalling it until you have confirmed that the developer and package are legitimate.
A clean result does not prove that the phone is completely safe. Continue with updates, app review, and account checks if symptoms remain.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2. Install Android, security, and Google Play system updates
Out-of-date software can leave known weaknesses unpatched. Check all three update areas available on your phone:

- Android system update: commonly found under Settings > System > Software update.
- Android security update: often shown under Settings > Security & privacy or within the system-update page.
- Google Play system update: commonly listed under Settings > Security & privacy > Updates.
Manufacturers rename and rearrange these menus, and older Android releases may place them elsewhere. Use the Settings search field for “system update,” “security update,” and “Google Play system update” if you cannot find them. Install every available update, restart when asked, and then check whether the original symptom returns.
Check the update status again after restarting if the phone offered more than one component update. Keep notes about which update was installed and when the symptom changed; that timeline helps distinguish a persistent app problem from a problem that was corrected by an operating-system update. Do not treat an update screen as evidence that an app is safe, and do not install a download offered by an unsolicited browser page.
3. Remove apps you do not recognize or trust
Google recommends uninstalling apps that are unnecessary, untrusted, or obtained outside Google Play. Begin with apps installed shortly before the problem started, particularly sideloaded packages, unofficial “security” tools, modified games, or apps whose publisher and purpose you cannot verify.
- Open Settings and go to Apps (the label may be Apps & notifications).
- Sort by recently installed or recently updated if your phone provides that option.
- Open an unfamiliar app’s details page and review its permissions, install source, and recent behavior.
- Tap Uninstall, confirm, and restart the phone.
- Use the phone normally long enough to see whether the symptom returns before removing another app.
Removing an app also removes that app’s locally stored data. If the app contains information you need, use its own export or sync function first, provided you can do so without opening a suspicious account or granting new permissions.
Some malicious apps try to prevent removal by asking for device-administrator access, accessibility control, or permission to appear over other apps. Review those special-access pages in Settings and revoke an unfamiliar app’s access before uninstalling it. The exact menu names differ by manufacturer; do not grant additional privileges merely because an alert demands them.
Do not remove several candidates at once. Uninstalling one app, restarting, and testing gives you a useful before-and-after comparison and reduces unnecessary loss of app settings. If a needed app was removed, reinstall it only from a source you can verify, and watch whether the original symptom returns.
4. Use safe mode to isolate a downloaded app
Safe mode starts Android with downloaded apps temporarily disabled. Google says that if the problem disappears in safe mode, a downloaded app is likely responsible. Safe mode is a diagnostic state, not a malware scanner.
Enter safe mode
The button sequence varies by phone maker and Android version, so do not rely on one universal key combination. Search the manufacturer’s support instructions for your exact model and “safe mode.” A “Safe mode” label normally appears near the bottom of the screen after a successful start.

Test and remove apps methodically
- While in safe mode, check whether the pop-ups, redirects, abnormal slowness, or other symptom stops.
- If the symptom is gone, list apps installed or updated around the time the problem began.
- Restart the phone normally.
- Uninstall one recent or suspicious app.
- Restart and test again.
- Repeat one app at a time until the symptom no longer occurs.
If the issue continues in safe mode, a downloaded app is less likely to be the immediate cause. Continue with updates, account security, and manufacturer support rather than deleting random system components.
Seeing the symptom only briefly in safe mode is not a reason to assume the phone is clean; use the normal-mode test after each app removal. Conversely, a symptom that remains in safe mode does not identify a particular system component. It simply means the downloaded-app hypothesis has not explained the behavior.
5. Secure your Google Account
Malware can be only one explanation for messages sent from your account or unfamiliar activity. Google recommends using its Account Security Checkup as part of Android malware troubleshooting.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open your Google Account settings and start Security Checkup.
- Review devices and sessions that are currently signed in.
- Remove access for a device or session you do not recognize.
- Check recovery phone and email details, recent security events, and third-party access.
- Change your password if the review indicates compromise, then enable two-step verification where available.
Do not enter your password into a form reached through an unsolicited pop-up. Open the Google Account settings directly through Android settings or a known Google page. If the phone is being used to approve suspicious sign-ins, complete the account review from a separate, trusted device when possible.
Account review is especially important when contacts received messages you did not send. Removing an app may stop one source of activity, but it does not automatically end sessions on other devices or undo unauthorized account changes. Follow the issues identified by Security Checkup and retain any security-event details you may need when contacting Google or the device maker.
6. Preserve data before considering a reset
Do not assume that “backup” means every item on the phone is recoverable. Before a factory reset, verify each category that matters to you:
- Photos and videos, including items stored only in a local gallery folder.
- Contacts saved to the device or SIM rather than synchronized to an account.
- Text messages and call history.
- Downloads, documents, recordings, and files in app-specific folders.
- Authenticator accounts, passkeys, and recovery codes.
- Chat histories and app settings that require an in-app backup.
- Game saves and other data that may not be synchronized.
Open the relevant backup settings and confirm a recent completion date. Where an app offers its own export or backup, verify that backup inside the app. Copy irreplaceable local files to a trusted computer or other storage only after the phone is stable; do not install an unverified transfer utility to do it.

Also confirm that you know the Google Account email address and password used on the phone, plus the screen-lock credential. After a reset, Android may require those credentials before setup can continue.

Make a short inventory before starting: list the accounts you must recover, the apps that contain important records, and the files that exist only on the handset. This prevents a common mistake—checking that photos are synchronized while overlooking an authenticator, downloaded document, or app-specific conversation. A backup status indicator is useful evidence, but it is not a guarantee that every category is included.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. When a factory reset is justified—and what it deletes
A reset is appropriate only after Play Protect, updates, app removal, safe-mode diagnosis, and account review have not resolved the problem, or when the manufacturer specifically recommends it. Google’s reset guidance is explicit: a factory reset erases all data on the phone. Data already stored in a Google Account may be restored during setup, but every app and its app data is uninstalled.
Before you reset
- Verify backups rather than assuming they include every photo, message, file, authenticator, or app state.
- Make sure you can sign in to the Google Account on the device.
- Record or securely store recovery codes and alternative sign-in methods.
- Know the screen-lock PIN, pattern, or password.
- Follow the manufacturer’s reset instructions for the exact model.
- If you recently changed your Google Account password, Google’s current guidance says to wait 24 hours before resetting.
Practical reset conditions
Google advises charging the phone to at least 70% and connecting to a network for setup afterward. The reset can take up to an hour. Keep the phone connected to power if possible, and do not interrupt it while it is erasing and restarting.

- Complete setup using the account whose backup you verified.
- Install Android and security updates before restoring large numbers of apps.
- Restore only the apps you recognize and still need.
- Install apps from Google Play or another source you can verify.
- Recheck Play Protect and account security.
- Restore personal files and app data in stages so that a returning symptom is easier to trace.
If suspicious behavior returns immediately after restoring one app or backup, stop restoring additional content and contact the device maker. A reset removes local data; it does not repair a defective component, compromised account, or unsafe behavior that is reintroduced during setup.
Think of the reset as a boundary between two states, not as proof of a cure. Before it, preserve and verify what matters. During it, follow the model-specific instructions without interruption. After it, update first and restore selectively. That sequence gives you the best chance of identifying what brings the symptom back while avoiding a second wipe.
When to contact the manufacturer or a professional
Contact the phone manufacturer when symptoms persist in safe mode, return after a carefully verified reset, or involve system settings that cannot be changed. Use the maker’s official support channel for model-specific safe-mode and reset instructions. Seek help promptly if the phone shows signs of financial-account abuse, identity theft, or unauthorized access to work systems; secure those accounts from a trusted device as well.
Do not pay for a “virus removal” service solely because a browser pop-up says your phone is infected. The documented Android cleanup path uses Play Protect, system settings, app removal, account security, and manufacturer support; the available guidance does not establish that a paid antivirus or repair utility is necessary.

Common mistakes that cause more data loss
- Tapping the warning: an alarming banner can be the unwanted software itself. Close it and use Play Store or Settings instead.
- Resetting first: a reset can erase files that could have been preserved by removing one app.
- Assuming cloud sync covers everything: local downloads, authenticator entries, messages, and app data may require separate backup.
- Deleting several apps at once: removing one at a time makes it possible to identify the app responsible.
- Restoring every app automatically: reintroducing the same unwanted app can recreate the problem.
- Ignoring account symptoms: messages sent to contacts or unfamiliar sessions require account-security action, not just a handset cleanup.
- Using one universal safe-mode guide: the correct button sequence varies by manufacturer and model.
- Trusting a clean scan as a diagnosis: Play Protect is an important check, but a clean result does not explain every redirect, crash, or account event.
- Changing the account password immediately before resetting: Google’s current reset guidance says to wait 24 hours after a recent password change.
What the available evidence does—and does not—show
Google’s Android Ecosystem Security FAQs report that, as of the fourth quarter of 2020, less than one percent of Enterprise devices had a third-party anti-malware solution installed. That is a dated figure for enterprise devices, not a current estimate of consumer malware prevalence and not evidence that consumers never need additional help. Official guidance reviewed here does not provide a current consumer-specific malware rate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will a factory reset delete my photos and apps?
Yes. Google says a factory reset erases all data on the phone and uninstalls every app and its app data. Information already stored in your Google Account may be restored during setup, but you must verify that photos, messages, files, and app-specific data were actually backed up first.
Can I remove Android malware without losing my contacts?
Often, yes. Start with Play Protect, updates, uninstalling suspicious apps, safe-mode testing, and account security. Contacts synchronized to an account may return after sign-in, while contacts stored only on the phone or SIM need separate verification before any reset.
How do I know whether a pop-up saying my phone has a virus is real?
You cannot establish that from the pop-up itself. Google lists persistent pop-ups and virus messages as possible warning signs, but an unsolicited alert can also be unwanted content. Do not tap its buttons or install its suggested software; check through Play Store and Settings instead.
What does safe mode tell me about malware?
Safe mode temporarily disables downloaded apps. If the problem disappears there, Google says a downloaded app is likely responsible. Remove recent apps one at a time, restarting and testing after each removal. If the symptom continues in safe mode, a downloaded app is less likely to be the immediate cause.
Should I install a paid antivirus app?
The documented Android cleanup route does not establish that a paid antivirus is necessary. Use Play Protect, system and security updates, app removal, safe mode, Google Account Security Checkup, and manufacturer support. Avoid installing a security product promoted by an unsolicited warning.
What credentials do I need before resetting?
Know the Google Account email address and password used on the phone, as well as the screen-lock PIN, pattern, or password. Keep recovery codes and alternative sign-in methods available. Google also says to wait 24 hours after a recent Google Account password change before resetting.
How long does a factory reset take, and how should I prepare?
Google says a reset can take up to an hour. Charge the phone to at least 70%, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model, and connect to a network for setup afterward. Do not interrupt the phone while it is erasing and restarting.
What if suspicious behavior returns after the reset?
Stop restoring additional apps or backup content and contact the device maker. Restore recognized apps and personal data in stages so you can identify what reintroduced the symptom. A reset does not fix a compromised account, defective component, or unsafe behavior restored during setup.
The Bottom Line
Protect your data by escalating gradually: run Play Protect, install Android and security updates, remove one untrusted app at a time, test in safe mode, and review Google Account security. Reset only after those steps fail and you have verified backups, account credentials, and model-specific instructions. A factory reset erases local phone data and all app data, so it is a fallback—not the first response.
