Assume the developer machine is compromised. Disconnect it from wired and wireless networks, preserve useful evidence, and use a known-clean device to revoke every credential the machine could access. Investigate repositories, CI/CD, cloud accounts, packages, extensions, and automated accounts. If you cannot rule out persistence or credential theft, wipe and rebuild from a trusted image rather than trusting an uninstall or one antivirus scan. Reconnect only after remediation, validation, patching, and monitoring are complete.
Why a fake AI tool requires an incident-response approach
A malicious AI installer, command-line utility, editor extension, or “model” package can do much more than install an unwanted application. A developer workstation often contains source code, SSH private keys, cloud profiles, API keys, package-registry tokens, signing credentials, browser sessions, password-manager access, and cached CI/CD credentials. A process running as your user may be able to read many of those items without exploiting the operating system.

That is why an apparently successful uninstall does not establish that the computer is safe. Malware can copy secrets before removal, create startup entries, add scheduled tasks, modify shell profiles, install an extension, alter package hooks, or use an existing session to access a repository or cloud service. A clean result from one endpoint scan is useful evidence, but it is not proof that a credential was not read or that persistence was not missed.

There is no reliable current prevalence figure for fake-AI-tool infections on developer machines. NIST SP 800-83 Rev. 1, published July 22, 2013 and updated May 4, 2021, provides foundational malware-response recommendations but does not measure this incident type.

First 15 minutes: contain the machine without destroying evidence
- Stop using the workstation. Do not sign in to source control, production consoles, email, personal accounts, or password managers from it. Stop terminals, editors, build jobs, and scripts that are not needed to preserve evidence.
- Disconnect networking. Unplug Ethernet and disable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. If your organization has managed endpoint isolation, use it; Microsoft says isolation helps prevent attacker control, data exfiltration, and lateral movement while allowing security tooling to retain telemetry.
- Preserve the running state when safe. A live system may contain volatile evidence such as processes, network connections, and decrypted material. Photograph or record the screen, time, logged-in user, and visible alerts before changing anything.
- If you cannot isolate it, power it down. A shutdown can destroy volatile evidence, but it is preferable to leaving an actively communicating machine connected to the network. Note the time and reason for the shutdown.
- Tell the incident owner. For a company machine, notify the security or incident-response team. If the workstation handled regulated data, customer information, signing keys, or production access, involve the appropriate legal and compliance contacts before destructive cleanup.
Do not repeatedly open the suspicious installer or extension to “see what it does.” Do not upload proprietary source code, credentials, crash dumps, or disk images to an unapproved online scanner.
Preserve evidence before deleting anything
Evidence is easiest to collect before an uninstall, restore, or wipe changes the timeline. Use a separate, trusted device or an approved response workstation for notes and storage.

- Record the installer or extension name, publisher, version, download location, installation time, file hash if available, and the user account that installed it.
- Capture screenshots of suspicious prompts, alerts, changed files, unexpected browser tabs, terminal output, and account notifications.
- List unusual processes, startup items, scheduled tasks, shell-profile changes, listening ports, and recent network destinations without interacting with suspicious binaries.
- Export endpoint-security, firewall, DNS, proxy, identity-provider, repository, cloud, and CI/CD logs while retention windows still include the installation period.
- Save copies of affected files or code before cleanup. GitHub incident-response guidance specifically recommends screenshots, exported logs or query results, and copies of affected files.
- Write a simple timeline: download, installation, first execution, privilege prompts, login events, repository activity, token creation, workflow runs, and discovery of the problem.
Keep the original evidence read-only when possible. Record who collected each item and its time zone. Professional responders may need a memory capture or forensic disk image; collecting those incorrectly can alter evidence, so ask your incident-response team before attempting it.
Revoke credentials from a known-clean device
Assume that every secret present on, typed into, or usable from the workstation may have been exposed. Work from a known-clean computer or a separately provisioned response environment. Revoke sessions first, then replace credentials with new values that were never stored on the suspect machine.

| OAuth authorizations | Remove unfamiliar or recently granted applications from repository, cloud, browser, and identity-provider consent pages. | Consent events, scopes granted, and API calls made by the application. |
CISA’s May 28, 2026 advisory names AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, SSH, Docker, npm, PyPI, Vault, Terraform, Kubernetes, GitHub, GitLab, and Bitbucket credentials among the secrets that may need rotation or revocation after malicious developer-tooling activity. Prioritize privileged, long-lived, reusable, and signing credentials. Require fresh authentication after disabling the old sessions and keys.
Determine whether repositories or delivery systems were changed
Start the investigation at the time the fake tool was installed and compare activity before and after it. GitHub recommends quickly validating whether a signal is real; if it cannot be confidently ruled out, treat it as real and proceed with containment.

Repository and Git history
- Review commits, force-pushes, branch creation, pull requests, releases, tags, deploy keys, webhooks, collaborator changes, and repository-setting changes.
- Compare workflow files, build scripts, package manifests, lockfiles, Dockerfiles, release configuration, and infrastructure code with a known-good revision.
- Look for encoded commands, newly downloaded executables, altered artifact destinations, credential-printing steps, and changes that run only in CI.
- From a clean clone, use ordinary Git history and code-search tools to identify changes made during the incident window. Do not execute untrusted build or test scripts while investigating.
CI/CD logs and runners
- Inspect workflow runs for unexpected actors, runner images, outbound connections, artifact uploads, shell commands, and secret-access events.
- Check whether a workflow printed environment variables, copied credentials into artifacts, or modified another repository.
- Revoke and re-register self-hosted runners if their host or registration token could have been exposed. Treat a runner with unexplained persistence as compromised.
Cloud and identity audit trails
- Search cloud audit logs for secret reads, new access keys, role changes, policy edits, storage access, unusual regions, and large or unexplained data transfers.
- Review identity-provider events for MFA resets, OAuth consent, token creation, password changes, and sign-ins from unfamiliar devices or networks.
- Correlate timestamps with the installation and with any process or network evidence from the workstation.
Packages, extensions, and automated accounts
- Inventory editor extensions, language servers, package managers, global packages, browser extensions, and recently updated dependencies.
- Verify publisher identity, version, release date, signature or checksum where available, and whether the installed version matches the approved lockfile or allowlist.
- Review bot, service-account, deployment, and package-maintainer activity. An attacker may use an automated identity that never appears as an interactive login.
CISA advises a forensics review of CI/CD logs, cloud audit trails, and affected developer machines because malicious developer tooling and workflows have been used to harvest CI/CD secrets, cloud credentials, and tokens.

Choose between triage, professional forensics, and a rebuild
| Situation | Appropriate response | Confidence and business impact |
|---|---|---|
| The file was never executed, the machine was isolated immediately, and endpoint telemetry confirms no access or persistence. | Preserve evidence, complete credential review, run approved scans, and have a security owner document the decision. | Potentially fastest return, but only if the evidence supports the narrow conclusion. |
| The tool executed with normal user privileges, but there is no sign of persistence or privileged access. | Use endpoint investigation tools, inspect logs and accounts, remove the software, and consider rebuilding if any uncertainty remains. | Moderate assurance; uninstall alone is not a sufficient control. |
| The tool requested administrator access, installed an extension, changed startup configuration, spawned shells, accessed credential stores, or made unexplained network connections. | Preserve evidence, rotate credentials, and rebuild from a trusted operating-system image. | Higher recovery confidence after a rebuild, with more downtime. |
| Production, regulated, customer, signing, or high-value secrets were accessible. | Engage incident-response or forensic specialists for memory or disk acquisition, scoping, and reporting before destructive actions. | Slower and more expensive, but better evidence and assurance. |
Microsoft Security Research advises, “Reinstall regularly and rebuild immediately if anomalous behavior is observed.” In practical terms, a rebuild is the preferred control whenever you cannot rule out persistence or credential theft. The decision should be recorded by the security owner or responsible administrator, not based solely on the absence of an antivirus alert.

How to rebuild a developer machine safely
- Finish containment and rotation first. Do not connect the old installation to the network to copy files or sign in. Complete credential revocation from the clean device.
- Preserve only approved evidence. Keep forensic images, logs, and suspicious files in the designated evidence location. Do not restore unknown executables, editor settings, shell profiles, browser profiles, or package caches.
- Obtain a trusted operating-system image. Use the operating-system vendor’s official distribution and your organization’s approved build process. Verify signatures or published checksums through an independent trusted channel.
- Erase and reinstall. Follow the organization’s standard secure-wipe and reinstallation procedure. If the device is managed, re-enroll it rather than importing the old management state.
- Patch before normal use. Apply current operating-system, firmware, browser, compiler, editor, package-manager, and security-tool updates before restoring source code or credentials.
- Restore known-good source and data only. Reclone repositories from a trusted revision. Restore documents after scanning and review. Do not restore old shell startup files, editor extension directories, browser extensions, credential stores, or package caches wholesale.
- Reinstall development components deliberately. Use approved publishers and pinned versions for editors, extensions, language runtimes, package dependencies, containers, and command-line tools. Compare the resulting inventory with your team’s allowlist.
- Re-enroll protection and controls. Enable endpoint protection, disk encryption, firewall rules, device management, least-privilege accounts, and outbound controls required by your organization.
- Issue fresh credentials. Generate new SSH keys and tokens on the rebuilt system only after the old credentials have been revoked. Prefer short-lived credentials and separate development access from production access.
Validate the rebuilt system before reconnecting
Validation is a release gate, not a quick restart. A security owner should accept the residual risk before network isolation is removed.
- Check startup folders, scheduled tasks, services, launch agents, shell profiles, browser extensions, editor extensions, package hooks, login items, and persistence locations against the expected baseline.
- Confirm endpoint telemetry is reporting, antivirus and behavioral protection are enabled, and no unexplained processes or outbound connections appear.
- Review identity, repository, cloud, package-registry, and CI/CD logs after credential rotation for continued use of revoked secrets or suspicious new activity.
- Verify that workflows, release jobs, deployment targets, runner registrations, webhooks, and automation accounts match the approved configuration.
- Patch the operating system and developer tools, enforce MFA, limit administrator rights, and restrict outbound access where practical.
- Reconnect in stages: first to a monitored development network, then to source control, and finally to higher-impact systems only after the earlier checks remain clean.
- Continue heightened monitoring for the period defined by your incident plan, including alerts for new OAuth grants, extension installs, unusual shell or download-tool execution, token creation, and unexpected data transfer.
What to do if the workstation cannot be isolated
If a laptop is traveling, lacks a functioning network control, or is actively communicating, disconnect its Ethernet cable and disable wireless radios immediately. If that is impossible, shut it down and record the time. Do not move it to another network and do not plug in removable media to copy files. Contact the responsible administrator from a different device and preserve the machine for authorized collection.
Prevent another fake-tool compromise
- Download editors, extensions, runtimes, and AI tools from official vendor stores or repositories and verify the publisher before installation.
- Pin extension and package versions in approved manifests and lockfiles. Review update provenance rather than accepting a similarly named publisher or package.
- Wait before pulling newly published packages when your risk model permits; CISA recommends known sources, trusted versions, and caution with newly released packages.
- Use least-privilege developer accounts and require a separate approval path for administrator elevation, production access, and signing operations.
- Keep development, staging, and production credentials separate. Prefer short-lived tokens, scoped permissions, and workload identity over reusable long-lived secrets.
- Monitor extension installation, OAuth consent, token creation, outbound connections, package changes, and unexpected shell or download-tool execution.
- Maintain a tested rebuild process, trusted operating-system images, approved software inventories, and documented incident contacts before an emergency occurs.
Official guidance and evidence limits
GitHub’s incident-response guidance says, “If you can’t quickly rule out the signal as a false positive, assume it’s real and proceed to containment.” Microsoft’s isolation guidance describes containment as a way to prevent attacker control, exfiltration, and lateral movement while security teams investigate. CISA’s May 28, 2026 advisory calls for forensic review of CI/CD logs, cloud audit trails, and affected developer machines. These recommendations support treating an executed fake AI tool as a security incident rather than a routine software-removal task.
The available guidance does not establish a single universal wipe requirement for every installation. The deciding factors are execution, privileges, persistence opportunities, credential access, unexplained network activity, and the value of the systems reachable from the machine. When those facts cannot be established confidently, a clean rebuild and complete credential rotation provide stronger assurance than an uninstall and one scan.
